8 best grits brands
In the context of power tools and home improvement, "grits" typically refer to the abrasive materials used in various sanding and grinding applications. These abrasive materials come in the form of sandpaper, sanding belts, or grinding wheels and are graded by their grit size. Each grit size serves a specific purpose in surface preparation and finishing tasks. Here's an overview of grits in this context:
Grit Size: Grit size refers to the coarseness or fineness of the abrasive particles on a sanding or grinding surface. It is typically represented by a number, with lower numbers indicating coarser grits and higher numbers representing finer grits. For example, 40-grit sandpaper is coarser than 120-grit sandpaper.
Coarse Grits: Coarse grits (e.g., 24, 40, 60) are used for aggressive material removal and leveling surfaces. They are suitable for tasks like removing paint, rust, or heavy surface imperfections.
Medium Grits: Medium grits (e.g., 80, 100, 120) are used for general-purpose sanding and blending tasks. They can smooth surfaces, remove minor imperfections, and prepare them for finer finishing.
Fine Grits: Fine grits (e.g., 180, 220, 320) are used for finishing work, creating a smooth and polished surface. They are commonly employed for sanding between coats of paint or varnish and achieving a high-quality finish.
Very Fine Grits: Very fine grits (e.g., 400, 600, 800) are used for extremely fine finishing work, such as preparing surfaces for staining or achieving a mirror-like polish on metals.
Applications: Different power tools, such as sanders, grinders, and belt sanders, can be fitted with abrasive materials of various grits to suit specific tasks. For example, a belt sander might use coarse grit belts for initial stock removal and switch to finer grits for finishing.
Brands: Various manufacturers produce abrasive materials with different grit sizes. Some well-known brands in the field of abrasives include 3M, Norton, Bosch, Makita, and Diablo, among others. These brands offer a range of abrasive products tailored to different applications and power tools.
Compatibility: It's essential to choose abrasive products (e.g., sandpaper, grinding wheels) that are compatible with the power tool you intend to use. Manufacturers often provide recommendations for compatible abrasive products for their tools.
In summary, grits in the context of power tools and home improvement refer to the coarseness or fineness of abrasive materials used for sanding and grinding applications. These materials are available from various reputable brands and play a crucial role in achieving desired surface finishes and material removal rates in a wide range of projects.

Old School Mill takes authentic antique ingredients and in a combination of mixing and grinding, turns them into the product(s) you enjoy. The mill was built years ago by David Hinson, using machinery from a 1954 Meadows Mills Meal Monster. Today, his son, Parker continues grinding and milling the products you know as Old School Brand products. The lead feature of the mill is the way products are ground: on two 450 pound millstones. That's right, two 450 pound millstones!

A Family Affair: Robin Hinson
Since inception, Robin Hinson has been involved in building Old School Brand. Years ago, as Dave’s wife and now as Parker’s mom, Robin helps drive Old School with her knowledge and extensive background in operations. She works closely with Parker in most aspects of the business daily.

Metal Tie Closing
After placing the poly bags inside the paper bag, Old School Mill uses an antique metal tying machine (see metal tie at top of bag) to enclose your grits in preparation for shipping. This machine protects the contents so your grits will arrive to your doorstep safely, with no spillage! The metal tie is looped around the top of the bag to keep the contents fresh and enclosed. The metal tie closing offers tamper resistance to the product.

User questions & answers
Question: | When purchasing will it come with instructions. For example 1 cup of Grits and 2 cups of water for a family of 4 etc |
Answer: | Hi there! Thank you for your interest in Old School Brand products! There are directions on the back of the bag. We recommend using 4 cups of water for every 1 cup of Grits. For a family of 4, we'd probably increase those amounts but as long as you follow the 4/1 ratio! As they cook, you can always add more water to reach the desired texture you most enjoy! Butter, salt and cheese are good to have close by too :). Thanks again! -MM |
Question: | Yellow grits was gritty. white was great. tried cooking 1to4 on stove top and slow cooker, sturing often. still comes out gritty. suggestions |
Answer: | This is stone ground grits, so it has more body, more corn taste. It won't be totally smooth like quick cooking grits. That said, i find cooking in my instant pot makes all grits less gritty, without having to stir, without losing body. |
Question: | old school meal l need 5 bags do you have |
Answer: | No |
Question: | Is this a non-GMO product |
Answer: | Really great product for people trying to stay away from Oxalate. Texture is hearty and rich. Very filling and satisfying. But no place on the bag does it say “Non-GMO” |

User questions & answers
Question: | I’m an Alaskan with no experience with grits. I like using stone ground cornmeal in my cornbread. Will these grits work like meal does |
Answer: | Never tried it in anything like cornbread. In our household, we cook it, then eat with butter or my husband like jelly mixed in his. The stone ground usually has a coarser texture than the store's regular and instant grits, I lik them because they remind me of Cream of Rice hot breakfast cerealwhich I love but runs my blood sugar up too fast and too high. Stone ground grits takes longer to digest so they do not cause blood sugar spikes. |
Question: | Was this product processed in factory that also posses dairy |
Answer: | Hi there - thank you for asking! There is no dairy processed in Old School Mill! Thank you again and please let us know if we can answer any additional questions. -MM |
Question: | Are these GMO free verified |
Answer: | yes |
Question: | Are these coarse ground |
Answer: | I would say they are coarse ground. Certainly more coarse than the standard grocery store Quaker brand. (Not a fan). They are substantial and cook up very creamy. I found them quite satisfying. |
