13 best 16mm film scanners

16mm film scanners are specialized devices used to digitize 16mm film reels, allowing users to preserve and edit their analog film footage in a digital format. These scanners are essential tools for filmmakers, archivists, and enthusiasts looking to convert old 16mm films into a modern, editable, and shareable digital format.

Here are some key features and aspects related to 16mm film scanners:

1. Film Format Compatibility:

  • 16mm film scanners are specifically designed to handle 16mm film reels. They can't process other film formats like 8mm or 35mm without additional adapters or modifications.

2. Resolution and Image Quality:

  • These scanners offer varying levels of resolution, typically measured in pixels per inch (PPI) or dots per inch (DPI). Higher resolution scanners provide sharper and more detailed digital images. Common resolutions include 2K (2048x1080 pixels) and 4K (4096x2160 pixels).

3. Color Depth:

  • They often support 24-bit or 48-bit color depth, ensuring accurate color reproduction and capturing subtle color variations in the film.

4. Scanning Speed:

  • Scanning speed can vary among different models. Some scanners offer real-time scanning, meaning they digitize the film at the same speed it plays, while others might offer faster or slower scanning options.

5.Dust and Scratch Removal:

  • Many 16mm film scanners come with built-in software or hardware features to remove dust and scratches, enhancing the overall quality of the digitized footage.

6. Compatibility with Editing Software:

  • Digitized files can be saved in various formats like AVI, MOV, or ProRes, making them compatible with popular video editing software like Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, or DaVinci Resolve.

7. Audio Capture (Optional):

  • Some advanced 16mm film scanners are equipped to capture audio from the film, syncing it with the video during the digitization process.

8. Post-Processing Capabilities:

  • Post-processing software bundled with these scanners allows users to further enhance the digitized footage, adjusting colors, contrast, and other visual elements.

9. Storage and Output:

  • The digitized files can be saved directly to external hard drives or other storage devices. They can also be burned to DVDs or Blu-rays for archival purposes.

10. Cost and Brand Variations:

  • Prices vary based on the features offered, with higher-end models from well-known brands being more expensive. Some popular manufacturers include Kodak, Blackmagic Design, and Lasergraphics.

When considering a 16mm film scanner, it's important to assess the specific needs of your project, including the desired resolution, scanning speed, and budget constraints. Choosing a scanner that aligns with your requirements ensures the best possible results when digitizing your 16mm film footage.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the tv jack for? the manual said it is a phone jack, but none of tv has a phone plug
Answer: While it's true that camera "film" can't be exposed to light, DEVELOPED film becomes a "negative", which CAN be exposed to light. So far, I've converted about 200 35 mm slides to digital photos without any problems. I haven't tried using negatives yet, but I'm sure the result will be the same. It's a fantastic little machine.
Question: Can this scan 120 film
Answer: With a Mac, you have to save images to an SD card or the device's built-in memory (only 128 MB). Then you choose USB Upload and you can transfer the images to your computer.
Question: Are the Reels for 8mm film scanning included or are they an extra cost? None are shown in the advertisement
Answer: I'm not sure about that as I have only produced a digital image from a negative.
Question: Does this connect to the computer to save the photos onto hard drive or do you need the SD card
Answer: Not being an expert on the computer, I am not sure what "ntsc" means, but I do NOT use an sd card with my Kodak Scanner. I have the scanner plugged directly into my laptop, and the digital images go straight to the E drive, from where I easily put them into folders under My Pictures. So far I have done about 1,100 slides, and I am so very happy with the quality of the digital images. I also have had fun editing for brightness and color. Many of my digital images are better than the original slides! I am extremely happy with this product.

User questions & answers

Question: Which button do I push to actually save the image
Answer: See page 5 of the user manual which you should have received with your scanner. Assuming you have successfully scanned an image and are viewing it on the screen, you should see three icons on the lower left and lower right. Select the Save icon (same as what you would see in other computer programs) by using the Left/Right keys, and press the OK button. This will save the image. One you have scanned an image, you can also select the other icons: Delete or Go to Main Menu. Delete is useful if you've accidentally scanned the same image twice, or determine that the photo quality is poor and you don't want to save it. The Main Menu can be useful if you scan your first image, but immediately see that your settings are wrong (e.g. the device defaulted to negatives, but I'm scanning slides).
Question: Satexas: what cable and what computer allowed you to transfer scanned slides without sd card and reader? technique? i have a macbook air
Answer: I was only able to use the sd card when I scanned the pictures on the slide scanner. I have an sd card slot in my laptop which allowed me to save them to my computer.
Question: Does this work with 16mm reels
Answer: If you expect this to digitize a film reel, then no. It digitizes ONE FRAME AT A TIME. That is, one frame, one file. If you have 20 years you could digitize a movie.
Question: My 2" slides are in 3 mm thick plastic mounts. Will these go through the slide adapter of the DigitNow film scanner
Answer: I'm not 100% sure but I believe they will. I have only used it with paper mounts but they appear to be around 3mm thick and they work fine.
Question: So load a slide tray and the software will cut them out and save each one in a seperate file? Can you load on several photos and auto cut into files
Answer: You can, yes. The software (Silverlight) lets you do batch scanning where you set the multiple scan areas and then hit batch and it scans them in order. You must set the scan area for the tray as well (Not automatic), but it works without the trays as well.
Question: how does this compare to the Plustek for 35mm scans
Answer: I agree with B. Menke on this. While I do not have a Plustek, I do use a primefilm xas (and before a primefilm xa) for 35mm film scanning, A dedicated 35mm film scanner of decent quality will give better scans than a flatbed can. However, the Epson V850 is more versatile and I use it for medium and large format film. The Epson is the way to go if you don't exclusively shoot 35mm film and cannot afford to get two scanners.
Question: How do you use the fluid mount tray?. Does the film get wet?. Can you use it without the fluid ?. Thank you
Answer: I would Google/YouTube "Wet Scanning" to get more details. But, to answer your question, yes the film will get wet. You put special fluid in the tray and then put your negative in it. At a basic level, wet scanning will help at filling in scratches, reduce/eliminate light scattering and refraction, hold the image flat to the glass, and a variety of other benefits that can help improve the image quality for scanning. It adds quite a few steps (and time) to your workflow process. Unless you were working on a special project (books, etc.), going to make large prints, I wouldn't wet scan.
Question: Anybody own the V600 and this one and can offer an opinion on the difference? I can read the specs, interested in your direct experience
Answer: Improved film holders. Also get a 2nd set to assist faster loading if working on larger projects. Upgraded software. Easier to use and faster scans, in my opinion, though may just be I am loading new set as soon as scan is completing. 600 is still a good machine but newer is usually improved and better. Hardware is not much different. Both out of same factory in Indonesia

User questions & answers

Question: I have tons of photos I want to digitally convert onto my computer.I'm using my hp printer's scanner, however it takes forever. Is this any faster
Answer: I used a HP scanner before and was not happy. This scanner works very quickly. The quality of the scans are excellent. I hope this helps. I just finished scanning over 30 yrs. worth of pictures.
Question: Can you use this scanner independently of a computer? Does it have a memory chip slot
Answer: There is no memory slot. There is one usb port on the back which connects to my computer. Try http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&infoType=Overview&oid=139863 or Go to Epson.com, select scanners and follow the prompts (drivers and support / scanners/) , then Search for "V600". When the search responds , click Epson Perfection V600 and it will take you to the manuals. I hope you can get your answer there.
Question: How long does it take to scan 35mm negatives at maximum resolution
Answer: I'm using it right now, and it takes about 3-4min per 35mm frame at 2400 DPI with Digital ICE enabled. For 10 frames at this setting, it takes about 20 minutes. This does not include the time it takes to preview the images first, then customize the exposure settings for each one to maximize the output; that usually takes me an extra 5-15min. The scanner can only hold two 6-frame sections of 35mm film at a time. All told, it takes me about 1-2 hours to process and scan each roll of 35mm film with this scanner. If you just want quick images and don't want to adjust anything, it can scan 10 frames in about 8 minutes at 300DPI with full auto settings and no ICE.
Question: Will this scanner convert negatives to prints
Answer: It is part of a solution which can do that, but it will not do so on its own. You need a computer, a photo-grade printer (with appropriate photo paper in whatever sizes you want to print), of course ink for the printer... and software which runs on your computer to do the task. By default, when scanning negatives, the color is inverted on the scanner, while when doing slides, it is not. The scanned images are provided to your computer for further tweaking, and then saving and/or printing. You can do low-res images, suitable for on-screen display (usually 24-bit jpg files at screen resolution) or high-res, deep-color images (usually 48-bit tif files in the 4k x 3k resolution range), suitable for poster-size prints. What this won't do is do all the intermediate steps for you. Some work on your end will be required...

User questions & answers

Question: will it do round negative discs
Answer: John, Install the drivers first, so that when you power up the scanner it will be recognized. I think you will be happy with this scanner. It isn't the fastest around, but the results are worth the wait. I think some of my old slides (1960's and 1970's) look better than they did originally.
Question: I have old black and white negatives that are a out 9cm long x 5cmwide is there a negative scanner on the market that can handle these larger old neg
Answer: I also found the SilverFast software to be horrible. I HIGHLY recommend VueScan by Hamrick Software (http://www.hamrick.com). It can utilize ALL the features of the OpticFilm 82001 (including infrared) and is much more intuitive. Available for Macintosh, Windows and Linux computer at a very reasonable cost (you can either by the current edition with free upgrades for a year for $30 or the Professional version with free lifetime upgrades for $80). They have been around for a very long time and it is constantly upgraded. It supports just about every scanner imaginable!
Question: Does it work with medium format film negatives
Answer: Yes. You will probably need the latest software update from LaserSoft. Nice scanner.
Question: Really? $40 for a cardboard box and a light
Answer: This software is excellent but like any good, flexible program, one must take the time to learn it. Another issue is that Amazon keeps reviews that are old, old, and old. This is tech stuff and a 5 year old review is worthless. Heck a one year old review is worthless.

User questions & answers

Question: It used to be that after photos are taken and still in the camera when roll is removed it cannot be exposed to light. How does this work
Answer: U can look up YouTube how to pull out w the screw, inside is 35mm and it does work w this scanner
Question: Does this unit save directly to a computer or do you have to save to SD Card and then to the computer
Answer: Yes. The scanner records the images (JPG) on removable media like a camera or directly to the computer via USB cable (included). You can transfer via USB or by removing the media and transferring it that way
Question: Does the type of media inserted determine the number of megapixels an image is converted to
Answer: There is no tray, you push the 1st slide in. It is not in the center for the picture to show completely so you use the 2nd slide to push the 1st slide in position and after digitizing the 1st slide you continue to push the 2nd slide all the way in. The 1st slide is not yet all the way out so you push the 3rd slide in a little way so you can get the 1st slide out. Continue with all your slides. Once you do about 10-15 slides it become very routine and works well.
Question: The ntsc out is really useless, only way to get digital images is to write to the sd card, correct
Answer: I don’t know about the dpi but it is 14.0 megapixels (4320 X 3252). Much better than the old slides we have scanned in!

User questions & answers

Question: Once downloadat 30fps to sd card, where to from there? it will probably play in a pc, but how to you get the capture to play on a tv (dvd
Answer: Import the file into a program like Pinnacle's Studio pro or Adobe Premiere Elements. From there you can create a DVD. Or upload directly to YouTube and you have a watchable movie that will play on your TV if your PC is linked to your TV. That last way is best as the second compression which YouTube does to the movie improves the quality of the video.
Question: What is power? is it 220/230v for using in eu
Answer: i have a US unit, it came with an external power supply that plugs into the wall socket. It outputs 12 vdc that plugs into the unit.It should have no issue if the correct wall supply is furnished for the eu unit. Unit actually runs on 12v.
Question: how much can a 32 GB card hold. How many small reels
Answer: My 3-inch reels average about 150 MB each. So a quick back-of-the-napkin calculation is 213 3-inch reels will fit on a 32 GB memory card.
Question: Has anyone figured out a way to use 7" reels on this unit
Answer: I found out that the 7" reels that surface mount electronics parts are packaged on for automated manufacturing are the same as old super 8 reels. I work at a company that has electronics manufacturing and the empties get tossed out. So, I got a bunch of them with intent to make some pulleys out of them. Idea was to put a cut down one on the wolverine take up drive, then a rubber belt (actually a girls hair band) over a another for offset and finally a "final drive" that I could put the actual 7" take up on. Had that stuff mounted on a wood stand. The supply reel just mounted on another wood stand with a bolt and wingnut. Good idea but didn't work well. The pulleys & belts took too much torque to turn and the wolverine slip clutch was not up to the task. Plan B, I had a motorized film editor with 2 variable speed drive motors on it. So, I took that apart and arranged one of the motors to drive my pulley setup instead of the wolverine. I had to babysit it but it worked and I was able to scan several full 7" reels w/o having to cut them into smaller sections. Looked real kludgy but got it done. If I were to be doing a lot more of this, I would rebuild the setup with a proper motor.

User questions & answers

Question: How can I change the date put on the jpeg file properties
Answer: That is a system date from the camera. I don't think it cab be changed I personally like knowing when the picture was taken
Question: I have this converter and would like to buy an extra tray so one person can load it while another is scanning a 1st set. Where do I find a tray only
Answer: Try the company that sold you the converter
Question: Are there trays for film sizes other than 35mm
Answer: I am only aware of the 35mm tray and the one for negatives that comes with the converter. I do give it a huge thumbs up for slides!!
Question: How do you rate the automatic color adjustment feature? Are you pleased with the quality of the slide conversions and quality of product
Answer: Since I haven't done this on any other converter, I can't compare this converter with any others. I was surprised that I could adjust some slides that I could not make out what it was a picture of so it was clear enough to see. My slides are about 40 years old and I was so pleased with the quality of my pictures.

User questions & answers

Question: Will it scan half-frame 35 mm slides
Answer: If the half-frame slides are mounted in standard 2"×2" mounts you can easily load them in the slide carrier. You can crop the image in the scanning software or subsequently in other image editing software.
Question: How many mp (megapixels) is the max. capability of this scanner? maybe i don't understand the math, but 10k x 10k seems like 100mp... is that correct
Answer: Your math is basically correct. A full frame 35mm negative at 10K resolution is about 9000 by 13000 pixels, which, as you noted is 117 Mpixels (and just over a GB if you save the IR layer along with all the colors). I also believe (but can't locate the source) that the actual scan limits are 5K along the CCD and 10K for the stepper, implying that interpolated values are used for every other horizontal pixel.
Question: Will this work with Windows 10 an its latest builds
Answer: I am using it on Windows 10 build 1809 and it works very well.
Question: I don't understand why this pacific scanner has much higher rating/reviews than the more expensive/more capable pacific xas scanner? & the plustek's
Answer: Probably it's because the XAs has an automatic film advance mechanism that reviewers say is unreliable and breaks. This model is essentially the same without the auto film advance.

User questions & answers

Question: It states the reslution is "1080p (1920 x 1080) - depends on source". what does "depends on source" mean? it's an anaolog source
Answer: 1920x1080 is possibly a typo, although I'm not sure what they mean by "depends on source." Both Super 8 and Regular 8 have an aspect ratio of 4:3, which in HD terms is 1440x1080 (1920x1080 is 16:9). Hope that helps.
Question: Where is made
Answer: Like most electronics, this is made in China.
Question: Is it possible to grab the raw frame sequences without converting to mp4? (I work in video editing, and would prefer to encode myself
Answer: No. The scanner records the movie internally at 20fps (not scanning speed), which it needs to do to eliminate flicker and encode mp4 onto an sd card. It never retains any images, unlike the Reflecta super 8+ scanner. It's a good question but again, no images available to save to re-encode into a better image than these units produce. To me, the end results with these are not good. Telecine with an old projector gives much better results and these very cheaply made scanners are toys that will not last. DRagging the film over the film gate is also a bad idea with 8mm film prints.
Question: So is this still working well for you
Answer: Kind of. I’ve done about 10 rolls of both 8mm and super 8. No matter what size reel you have, if there is a splice, it’ll hang up and you’ll have to manually pull it through, so you can completely walk away and ignore the transfer process. The 5” and 7” reels tend to stop half way through, which for those reels can be a 4 hr process. It almost seems like the machine overheats, which is funny because you dont feel any heat. I shut it off and continue later. This creates another file, but oh well, depending on what video editor/creator you plan on using, this just makes a chapter or a splice. If i wasnt so frugal and only had a few reels, id have used costco or walmarts service, but oh well, i plan on reselling this after im done. I really dont see why these are $300. Its all plastic, should be $79.95, but this was the only one that accepted 7” reels. Hope this helped

User questions & answers

Question: will this scan 126 and 110 film
Answer: No. Scans 35mm film only.
Question: Dose it scan full frame or cropped
Answer: It scans full frame.
Question: Can it scan 35mm panoramas
Answer: Yes, it can scan a few types of panoramas including Horizon 24x58, Widelux 24x59, and XPan 24x65. For Panramas, it scan scan a maximum of 3 frames per strip, which is about the same as 6 frames for normal 135.
Question: Will this scan an entire roll of uncut 35mm film at one time
Answer: No it won’t. The machine does it by 6 negatives per “slide”. Once the slide is done it’ll eject the film it scanned and on to the next one. You will have to cut the roll into strips of 6 for it to work the best, but strips of 4 will work well too. However the company advertises only being able to scan a batch of 10 strips, and I was able to reliably scan about 15 with no issues.
