14 best 120 film scanners

A 120 film scanner is a specialized type of scanner designed for digitizing medium format film, specifically 120 film. Medium format film is larger than 35mm film and is commonly used by professional photographers and enthusiasts for its higher image quality. Here's what you need to know about 120 film scanners:

  1. Film Size: 120 film scanners are designed to accommodate the larger format of 120 film, which typically produces images that are 6x4.5cm, 6x6cm, 6x7cm, 6x9cm, or even larger. These larger negatives or transparencies capture more detail and are often used for high-quality photography.

  2. Purpose: The primary purpose of a 120 film scanner is to convert analog medium format film into digital files. This allows photographers to preserve their film-based images in a digital format, making them easier to store, share, and edit digitally.

  3. Resolution: Film scanners are known for their high-resolution capabilities. They can capture fine details from the film, ensuring that the digital reproductions maintain the quality of the original images. Common resolutions for 120 film scanners are measured in dots per inch (dpi) and can range from 2400 dpi to 9600 dpi or even higher.

  4. Color Depth: These scanners typically have a high color depth, often 48-bit or 16-bits per channel, which allows for accurate reproduction of colors and tones.

  5. Scanning Process: Scanning with a 120 film scanner involves placing the film strip or individual frames into the scanner's film holder or carrier. The scanner then uses a light source and sensor to capture a digital image of each frame. Specialized software is often included or recommended to adjust settings, such as exposure and color balance, and to save the scanned images in various file formats like TIFF or JPEG.

  6. Dust and Scratch Removal: Many 120 film scanners come with features like Digital ICE (Image Correction and Enhancement) technology, which can automatically remove dust and scratches from the scanned images, improving image quality.

  7. Connectivity: 120 film scanners can connect to a computer via USB or other compatible ports. Some models may offer Wi-Fi connectivity for added convenience.

  8. Price Range: The price of 120 film scanners can vary significantly based on factors such as brand, resolution, and additional features. High-end models with advanced features tend to be more expensive.

  9. Compatibility: Ensure that the film scanner you choose is compatible with the type of medium format film you use, as different models may support various frame sizes.

In summary, 120 film scanners are specialized devices designed for converting medium format film into digital files. They offer high resolutions and color depth, making them essential tools for photographers who want to digitize their medium format film negatives or transparencies while preserving image quality.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this scanner produce a better or worse product than a flatbed scanner
Answer: Included sample pictures in my review (~July 2020). The flatbed scanned image pixelates much sooner than the negative image captured by the slide scanner. Neither image is as clear as the original photo processed from the camera negative, and both scanning formats are very sensitive to dust, so make sure to clean not only the negative, but also the negative scanner unit. I did not consider the Wolverine a great value, and I am still searching for a commercial photo lab to make prints/images from my negatives.
Question: Correction, I meant can I scan 4x5 negatives
Answer: The opening is only large enough for a 35MM Slide. So NO it will not do 4x5 Negatives. Carriers are with the unit down to 8mm film.
Question: Product description says microfiche is supported, but how? I have 3"x5" sheets of microfiche images. Cut the sheets into strips of 1/2"x1/2" images
Answer: My Wolverine came also with a tray for 120 film - Aperture 3.5" wide x 2.25" high. This might work? Or the vendor MAY sell a tray specifically for 3"x5" ... but I suspect that this is a bit too large for the viewing screen (which is about the same as the 3.5" x 2.25" aperture of the 120 film slide tray.
Question: Will this also scan microfilm
Answer: This comes with several adapters for various negative sizes. Will your negative fit? Depends on the size. If not this one, I’m sure there is one out there that can do it.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this accommodate 4X5 negatives
Answer: Yes. But the quality is not what you expect for a Kodak printer. I had this printer replaced twice and just replaced it again with an HP.
Question: How do i scan 620 negs to the hard drive and have them show same size as 35 mm? the 620 image is 1/2 size of 35mm. using epson 600 &right holder
Answer: DO NOT purchase from MILAS CORP. First they sent me a Kodak 5.1 instead of what I needed and then they snaked my review and negative comments from the page somehow. Write a review about the seller PLEASE. They are extremely manipulative. The 5.1 is the lesser model. Yes it came with ink, it was dried to the ink heads. There was a disconnected wire and I would have sent it back had I not severely needed a new printer/scanner. The 4.2 is fantastic, I have seen it in action but DO NOT BUY FROM MILAS CORP.
Question: are these holders compatible with any flatbed scanner
Answer: The best ink cartridges for this printer is the LD Printer Ink Cartridge Set of 3 Kodak 10 Color And 5 Black Kodak 10XL . You can purchase them on Amazon And E-Bay or go directly to LD Products. Your best prices are on Amazon And E-Bay.
Question: What is the width of the film opening
Answer: All available software for this printer are available on the Kodak website for free download.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the tv jack for? the manual said it is a phone jack, but none of tv has a phone plug
Answer: While it's true that camera "film" can't be exposed to light, DEVELOPED film becomes a "negative", which CAN be exposed to light. So far, I've converted about 200 35 mm slides to digital photos without any problems. I haven't tried using negatives yet, but I'm sure the result will be the same. It's a fantastic little machine.
Question: Can this scan 120 film
Answer: With a Mac, you have to save images to an SD card or the device's built-in memory (only 128 MB). Then you choose USB Upload and you can transfer the images to your computer.
Question: Are the Reels for 8mm film scanning included or are they an extra cost? None are shown in the advertisement
Answer: I'm not sure about that as I have only produced a digital image from a negative.
Question: Does this connect to the computer to save the photos onto hard drive or do you need the SD card
Answer: Not being an expert on the computer, I am not sure what "ntsc" means, but I do NOT use an sd card with my Kodak Scanner. I have the scanner plugged directly into my laptop, and the digital images go straight to the E drive, from where I easily put them into folders under My Pictures. So far I have done about 1,100 slides, and I am so very happy with the quality of the digital images. I also have had fun editing for brightness and color. Many of my digital images are better than the original slides! I am extremely happy with this product.

Answer: It is there as you lose one Mobo Internal USB Header and they give you it back but it cannot be the same as a Mobo Internal USB header as it would not work so has to be an external type USB port (it is complicated but it is what it is)
Question: Can I use this on Epson V
Answer: Yes an iPad can be used via WiFi, the iPad needs the Kodak Pic Flick HD app and you will have to be on the same WiFi network. Thank you for your question and if you have any other questions we will be happy to help you. ~ Closeouts For Less
Question: Is this compatible with the V600 model
Answer: we haven't run out yet, but do know that it will not print unless both cartridges have ink in them. So I would try restarting the printer so it can recognize the new cartridge and see if that resolves the issue. Also you may want to check the level of your black ink as well, just to be sure.

User questions & answers

Question: It used to be that after photos are taken and still in the camera when roll is removed it cannot be exposed to light. How does this work
Answer: U can look up YouTube how to pull out w the screw, inside is 35mm and it does work w this scanner
Question: Does this unit save directly to a computer or do you have to save to SD Card and then to the computer
Answer: Yes. The scanner records the images (JPG) on removable media like a camera or directly to the computer via USB cable (included). You can transfer via USB or by removing the media and transferring it that way
Question: Does the type of media inserted determine the number of megapixels an image is converted to
Answer: There is no tray, you push the 1st slide in. It is not in the center for the picture to show completely so you use the 2nd slide to push the 1st slide in position and after digitizing the 1st slide you continue to push the 2nd slide all the way in. The 1st slide is not yet all the way out so you push the 3rd slide in a little way so you can get the 1st slide out. Continue with all your slides. Once you do about 10-15 slides it become very routine and works well.
Question: The ntsc out is really useless, only way to get digital images is to write to the sd card, correct
Answer: I don’t know about the dpi but it is 14.0 megapixels (4320 X 3252). Much better than the old slides we have scanned in!

User questions & answers

Question: What is the depth of this item? In other words, how thick is it
Answer: Diffuser? I'm not sure what that means exactly in relation to this product. However, the light produced is uniform across the surface; there are no bright/dim spots or pixiels visible. I use mine to digitize 35mm negatives and it is perfectly suited to this purpose (I detect no artifacts as a result of using it)

User questions & answers

Question: I have tons of photos I want to digitally convert onto my computer.I'm using my hp printer's scanner, however it takes forever. Is this any faster
Answer: I used a HP scanner before and was not happy. This scanner works very quickly. The quality of the scans are excellent. I hope this helps. I just finished scanning over 30 yrs. worth of pictures.
Question: Can you use this scanner independently of a computer? Does it have a memory chip slot
Answer: There is no memory slot. There is one usb port on the back which connects to my computer. Try http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&infoType=Overview&oid=139863 or Go to Epson.com, select scanners and follow the prompts (drivers and support / scanners/) , then Search for "V600". When the search responds , click Epson Perfection V600 and it will take you to the manuals. I hope you can get your answer there.
Question: How long does it take to scan 35mm negatives at maximum resolution
Answer: I'm using it right now, and it takes about 3-4min per 35mm frame at 2400 DPI with Digital ICE enabled. For 10 frames at this setting, it takes about 20 minutes. This does not include the time it takes to preview the images first, then customize the exposure settings for each one to maximize the output; that usually takes me an extra 5-15min. The scanner can only hold two 6-frame sections of 35mm film at a time. All told, it takes me about 1-2 hours to process and scan each roll of 35mm film with this scanner. If you just want quick images and don't want to adjust anything, it can scan 10 frames in about 8 minutes at 300DPI with full auto settings and no ICE.
Question: Will this scanner convert negatives to prints
Answer: It is part of a solution which can do that, but it will not do so on its own. You need a computer, a photo-grade printer (with appropriate photo paper in whatever sizes you want to print), of course ink for the printer... and software which runs on your computer to do the task. By default, when scanning negatives, the color is inverted on the scanner, while when doing slides, it is not. The scanned images are provided to your computer for further tweaking, and then saving and/or printing. You can do low-res images, suitable for on-screen display (usually 24-bit jpg files at screen resolution) or high-res, deep-color images (usually 48-bit tif files in the 4k x 3k resolution range), suitable for poster-size prints. What this won't do is do all the intermediate steps for you. Some work on your end will be required...
