User questions & answers
Question: | Is the display dimmer than the older HP 12c |
Answer: | I think it's actually a little brighter. I'd suggest looking at one at Office Depot or Staples first. See what you think of the display. |
Question: | Where can I buy the batteries for this calculator |
Answer: | Ok; batteries: FYI: with moderate use, my batteries last 3-4 years. Three solutions: 1) Open battery compartment on back of 12C; get battery model-number; buy them on the web (if memory serves, I think they’re about $5/ea) 2) my medium-sized City (Melbourne, FL) actually had a battery store that sells a couple thousand(?) models of batteries. 3) I would guess most iPhone repair stores would sell that size battery (obviously, call first) |
Question: | Is there a difference between the hp12c & hp12 plantinum |
Answer: | no! The Platinum always displays "RPN", and the older versions do not. I have used these for more than 20 years, and the Platinum is a "DO NOT BUY" because of this feature... Everyone knows the calculator is "RPN", nobody needs it on the display all the time. |
Question: | Are these original, hp manufactured, new products? reason i ask is the list price is incorrect ($79.99 at hp) and all the problems with keys |
Answer: | I have never had any particular issue with the keys, and I have had multiple HP12Cs since they were introduced in the mid 1970s (as far as I can remember...). The one that I received was new and it, too, has no key issues to report. I will say that, over the years, with each new 12C, the touch was slightly different, but I got used to it quickly. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this product come with the carrying case |
Answer: | Yes. A nice semi-hard case with a spot for business card |
Question: | Does this one have a Black keyboard background or a silver one on what is delivered by Amazon |
Answer: | The HP 12CP is the Platnium edition - (that's what the P stands for). The shipped product looks exactly as it is displayed on the product page. Except for the buttons and the silver panel on the top 3rd of the calculator (around the display) the background is black. I have mine in my hand right now and it looks identical to the picture you see on the product page. |
Question: | Where was the calculator built? 12C's built in the US seem to have much better build quality and reliability than the ones built in China |
Answer: | The 12C that I have has the letters "CHN 700****" on a tab located on the back of the calculator. I assume that means China. Regardless, I bought this calculator in 2005 and have literally used it multiple times everyday...probably 10,000 times. It continues to work perfectly. |
Question: | Why is the packaging in spanish? my order arrived today and i want an english version |
Answer: | English Manuals: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-12c-platinum-financial-calculator/384706/manuals I found these, that should help. Quick Start Guide: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01798099.pdf Hopefully that helps!! |

Product description
The HP 12C Financial Calculator features built-in financial functions and statistics, uses Reverse Polish Notation (RPN), more than 120 built-in functions, including register-based cash-flow analysis, 10-character, 1-line LCD display, Device measures 5.0 x 0.6 x 3.1 inches (WxHxD).It has 10-character, 1-line LCD display.
If you bought yourself a financial calculator during the 1980s, chances are it was this bad boy. Nothing has changed since its introduction--it still uses Reverse Polish Notation (RPN), is easy and versatile in programming, and has a thin, sturdy casing. Certainly, there's been newer, fancier calculators introduced since, but there's something to be said for the quality of classics.
The HP 12C's functions include all the basics--such as calculating APR, NPV, and IRR--and statistics are a snap. For students new to financial calculators, this is an excellent place to start. For the most part, the manual reads like a minitextbook, walking you through sample problems and situations followed by graphs and tables demonstrating the technique--and you can even check your results. The section on creating programs does seem to be written for the technically ignorant, addressing in detail how you could possibly benefit from using programs, but it'll still help you get the job done.
In general, it's a bit slower than newer models, just like last year's computer isn't as speedy as today's new release. On the plus side, it's just 3 by 5 inches and slips easily into a pocket. The bottom is printed with a few little cheat notes for common functions, which is nice for quick reference. The HP 12C's one-year warranty and available tech-support line offer reassurance this little workhorse will continue to be an industry standard for years to come. --Jill Lightner

User questions & answers
Question: | Are all of the Amazon hp12c's made in China? What about the quality of the Malaysian model's? Any help will be much appreciated |
Answer: | I don't know. What I can tell you is that I purchased a new one from my local Office Depot. It was about $20 more, but the quality was much better. I could tell it the moment I started using it. No more sticking keys! |
Question: | does it come with a case |
Answer: | Comes with a thin slip-in case. |
Question: | Do the keys stick |
Answer: | The best keypads were the old, legacy 12Cs. The next best were the 30th Anniv editions that came out in 2011. But those 30th Anniv models are now selling for $300! And though the keypads were great, they just didn't hold up like the legacy 12Cs. But you can take one of these current 12Cs and if you're even a little handy, you can modify it to create a 12C with a fantastic keyboard feel and no non functioning keys. Look for my 4 Star review on about this date (9.20.20) and it will walk you thru the simple process. Buy a cheap used one in good condition that uses CR2032 batterie, maybe its a return "bcz the keys don't work," and make yourself a $300 30th Anniv edition. I have the full description of what to do and pix with it. I just edited the review today with the pix added and it takes a few days for Amazon to review it. So by 9.22.20 it should be up with the pix. |
Question: | What is the difference between this and Platinum edition? Platinum claims to be "fast and powerful". Is that true |
Answer: | According to HP, the Platinum editition is 6X faster than the regular one. While this might be true, it is however not worth to pay 50% more. The traditional one exceeds my expectations anyway. After all, at least for myself, an average user of this calculator would not notice the speed difference under normal circumstances. So, my suggestion would be, stick to the older one and save about $23. |
