User questions & answers
Question: | The tote bag it looks like sack. Does it protect the Ulk? any padding |
Answer: | All ukuleles are small, and if you have larger hands, you might find the short scale of a soprano to be cramped. No ukulele could be called "too big", so try to find a shop that has all four sizes and decide which is most comfortable for you. The tenor is easy to play and has more depth and "punch", but the little soprano wins on charm. |
Question: | many reviews mention instrument not holding tune. is this due to poor tuners, or just string stretch that occurs on any instrument |
Answer: | Read the reviews. My wife loves hers. Mine developed a crack in the top within two weeks of owning it and I returned and swapped for a Kala KA-S. I think that my wife's less expensive Kala KA-15S has a nicer tone than mine. But yes, it's good quality. It's made of lovely wood too. A very beautiful little instrument. I recommend buying from Amazon and saving the shipping materials until you're sure you love it. Returns are free on Amazon...for a time. :) |
Question: | Is the ukulele that comes with the starter kit the ka-15s because it says ltp-s on the inside of the instrument |
Answer: | That's how ukuleles are suppose to be strung traditionally. Its called re-entrant and a few other stringed instruments do this as well. And most teaching material is for ukes strung that way. Don't rearrange the strings or it will be impossible to use chord the standard chord fingerings. If you want linear tuning (like on guitar) you have to by strings that say "low g" on the package. That way the finger patterns still work. But I wouldn't do this if I were a beginner because it will sound less like a traditional ukulele if you did that. Some people do that but those people are purposefully trying to create a unique sound, and they usually do it on a tenor ukulele, not soprano. |
Question: | can strings be replaced when they break by standard strings |
Answer: | I got one for me and my sister. Most low cost ukuleles are unplayable until you have them set up and restrung with better quality strings. Not this one. It comes ready to play out of the box, it just takes a couple weeks until the strings don't fall out of tune, but that's true of all nylon strings. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does ukulele have aquila strings |
Answer: | Please be very careful if you use the regular guitar picks they include with this bundle. If not careful, using them can scratch up the surface of the ukulele. I just put my set of regular guitar picks that came with this in my acoustic guitar case. They do make felt picks to use with a ukulele. I'm not sure why the company didn't just include one or two of those instead. They could have done away with including actual guitar picks with this and put something that was used properly with a ukulele like felt picks but I don't even see anyone using any picks with a ukulele. What they could have done was use felt ukulele picks with the included accessories or not include any picks and put an actual ukulele capo in with it. The guitar picks are not intended for the ukulele. Not normally, anyway. A capo would have made this deal even sweeter. Things they could have included with this bundle INSTEAD OF regular hard plastic guitar picks not intended for a ukulele would be: String winder (used for restringing/changing the strings - it goes over the tuners to wind them or unwind them faster, by hand) Capo - one made specifically for a ukulele and not a regular guitar Felt Picks (even though I've never seen any ukulele player use any picks) |
Question: | whats the differences between this one and ka-t |
Answer: | There are many well made videos on Youtube that show you how to carefully and properly restring it, by responsible ukulele music teachers. |
Question: | how does the case open |
Answer: | If you are tiny and want a uke the size of a toy, buy a soprano size. This concert size Donner is the perfect size. Not a toy at all. I do not understand how anyone with normal sized hands could even play a soprano uke because the strings and frets would be so close together. Also the sound of this concert size Donner is beautiful, not tinny, because it is a little bigger. This concert size is still small, still sounds like a uke, but more what I, as a 5' 5" 120 pound woman would consider a comfortable fit and perfect size for a uke. You will love the sound. I also have a Kala baritone uke tuned like a guitar. It does not sound like a teeny, tinny uke. But the metal frets on it cut my hands. This Donner is much better finished and they look very much alike as far as the wood. This Donner is beautiful in every way. You will love it. Have fun. Enjoy. By the way, there are youtube videos that show you the different uke brands, their size and sound. Check them out. |
Question: | Would you recommend replacing the strings it comes with, or are they good |
Answer: | HECK NO! You'll want a baritone uke at least! A little more seriously, baritone ukes are tuned D-G-B-E (like 4 strings of a guitar) instead of usual uke G-C-E-A. It's a good thing to know if you're coming from a guitar background. Less seriously, ONLY an electric bass can Djent! I'm afraid you are djentless, my friend. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it come with a bag |
Answer: | No. It comes in a box shaped like the uke. It is fine for storage, buy you may want to consider purchasing a separate bag if you plan on being on the go. |
Question: | What color is it? The pics in the search show a brighter orangy-brown, but here it looks like a dark brown wood |
Answer: | It depends on the lighting of the room. If you put it in the sun it will shine with the brighter orangey-brown but in less focused lighting it looks like the dark brown wood. It is gorgeous. |
Question: | I had a beginners Ukulele, and the strings weren't nylon. Will I need to replace the strings with nylon once it ships? How was the quality of them |
Answer: | The stings on this Ukulele are Aquila strings and are very appraised by the ukulele community. You should not have to replace the strings. They will take about a week to stretch out until they stay in tune, but once they do they will last a pretty long time. The longer you have the strings on the better they will sound. You don't have to replace Uke strings until you started noticing marks rubbed in from the frets. Quality is great! |
Question: | Does this one have aquila strings |
Answer: | Yes, the Kala KA-S I bought did have Aquila strings. They stayed in tune and had a very sweet tone. Intonation was the biggest problem with this uke. But still, worth the money. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this come with a pick to play it with |
Answer: | I don't know whether it's easy to convert. I'm left-handed, and my left-handed ukulele teacher advised me to learn to play right-handed as he does. It's only a little harder at first. |
Question: | Stupid and newbie question, how am I suppose to restring this ukulele? The saddle is not the typical saddle similar to classical guitars |
Answer: | Yes! it would be great for a 4 year old! Perfect size for smaller hands. |
Question: | how do you determine what size to buy |
Answer: | I doubt it would survive a drop onto rock. It's just thin plastic. |
Question: | Does it djent |
Answer: | It comes with a light, drawstring bag that can be carried like a backpack. The material is very thin, think those reusable grocery bags. It is fine for carting around, but I don't think it would provide much protection. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Some of the review-pictures the customers post are different to the display picture of the ukulele. Is it because they used to sell another model |
Answer: | If you look up this model online through other dealers, you will see variances in the wood color due to the wood itself, the photo, your monitor settings etc. The 2 review pics are my own, of my instrument in walnut. Id say it's a little lighter than what you see in the listing photo. Keep in mind the neck will be in mahogany so it won't "match" exactly. If that's a problem for you, maybe choose an all mahogany one instead. |
Question: | Is this solid wood |
Answer: | I believe it is solid wood. |
Question: | Does this one have aquila strings |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | the bottom picture shows a dark wood. i like the lighter wood shown in the other pics. are there choices? how will I know what I'm getting |
Answer: | Pacific Walnut is a medium-dark brown. The photos make it look like part of it is lighter wood because of the camera/flash but the Ukulele is one uniform color, front and back with variations in the finish due to it being natural wood. It's very pretty and the Pacific Walnut resembles traditional Koa wood Ukulele. If you want a lighter wood, search for Spruce wood, which is a naturally lighter color. Remember, the best Ukuleles are made of wood and wood-type will vary such a Koa, Walnut, Mahogany, Pacific Walnut and each wood creates its own tone. The size of the Ukulele changes sound, too. It's really a preference. Most people who play own several Ukuleles of different wood type and size. Price can make a difference in what you choose. Just stay away from plastic or veneer. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it really easy to convert for a left-handed player |
Answer: | It is very much a sack. It is not padded. More of a back sling for carrying. |
Question: | Would this size work for a 4 year old |
Answer: | This is the case on all ukuleles and classical guitars. It has nothing to do with the tuners. It is because of the nylon plastic string and the tie they do at the bridge. If you sign up for "Learn to Play" on Kala's website they show you how to tune and stretch your strings. |
Question: | Does this ukelele anti shattered and crack/brake also chip if drop in hard rock for hiking |
Answer: | It is a different ukulele from the KA-15S. I'm not sure exactly how different but if you go to the Kala website and look at the specs for each the specs are slightly different. So it's definitely not a KA-15S with a different label slapped on it or anything. |
Question: | Does this come with a gig bag |
Answer: | I know this question was already answered, but I would just like to reinforce: the strings on this instrument are Aquila Nylguts. These strings are very much the standard for ukulele. Far too many reviewers have referred to these as "toy" strings. I can only assume that this is due to them only being familiar with traditional guitars, and not the larger body of stringed instruments available. Although it's an innocent mistake, it's a misunderstanding that is very likely to discourage someone from purchasing what is actually a very good instrument for it's price range. It's especially damaging when they present the information in a way that implies that they know what they are talking about, when they clearly do not. In comparison to guitars, ukulele are relatively delicate instruments. More importantly, they do not have a truss rod in the neck. While some tenor ukulele can hold up to steel strings, a little soprano like this would almost certainly warp, or even flat out fail, under that kind of pressure. I won't say it's impossible, but I definitely wouldn't risk mine trying to make it work. Either way, ukulele are not designed to use metal strings. Most ukulele strings are made from some variation of nylon, just like a classical guitar. You may have heard them referred to as "gut," or "catgut" strings, because they were originally made out of animal intestine. Nylon is now preferred for obvious reasons. If you were to go out and buy a $1500 ukulele, there is a very high chance that it would be strung with either these exact same strings, or Aquila SuperNylgut strings. It's just a matter preference. These are very much real, professional grade strings. One thing that I really like about Aquila is that even though they are the industry standard when it comes to ukulele strings, they are actually a surprisingly small, family run company. That may not matter to anyone else, but it makes me just a little bit happier to support them. Fun fact: All that being said, you actually can get strings that are made of flourocarbon (which is exactly the same material that fishing line is made from). Very few people use them, though. I've only ever heard people complain about the way they feel, and I believe that stretching is a much bigger problem with them. I've never tried them personally, however. |
