8 best clarinet reeds
Clarinet reeds are essential components of the clarinet, a woodwind instrument. They play a significant role in producing sound and are a crucial part of a clarinet player's setup. Here's what you should know about clarinet reeds:
Function: Clarinet reeds are thin pieces of wood, typically made from a type of cane called Arundo donax. They are attached to the mouthpiece of the clarinet and vibrate when air is blown over them. This vibration creates sound when it interacts with the clarinet's body and mouthpiece.
Materials: Clarinet reeds are primarily made from cane, but synthetic reeds made from materials like plastic or composite materials are also available. Cane reeds are the traditional choice and are favored by many players for their warm and natural sound. Synthetic reeds are known for their durability and consistency.
Strength and Thickness: Clarinet reeds come in various strengths or thicknesses, ranging from soft to hard. The strength of the reed affects how it vibrates and, consequently, the sound produced. Players select reed strength based on their skill level, playing style, and personal preference.
Ease of Playing: Softer reeds (with lower strength ratings) are generally easier to play and produce a smoother, more mellow sound. They are often recommended for beginners. Harder reeds (with higher strength ratings) require more air support and produce a brighter, more focused sound.Advanced players often prefer harder reeds for increased control and projection.
Choosing Reed Strength: Selecting the right reed strength depends on factors like a player's experience, embouchure strength, and the type of music they perform. It may take some experimentation to find the ideal reed strength.
Brands: Various manufacturers produce clarinet reeds, each with its own characteristics. Popular brands include Vandoren, Rico, D'Addario (formerly known as Rico), and Legere (known for synthetic reeds). Players often have brand preferences based on sound and performance.
Consistency: Reed consistency is essential for reliable sound production. Many players sort and test reeds to find the ones that suit them best. Some brands offer reeds that are pre-packaged and sorted by strength and quality.
Break-In Period: New clarinet reeds may require a "break-in" period where they are played and conditioned to reach their optimal sound and response. Players often rotate several reeds to extend their lifespan and maintain consistent performance.
Maintenance: Proper care of clarinet reeds is crucial. After playing, reeds should be removed from the mouthpiece, dried, and stored in a reed case to prevent warping and mold growth.
Replacement: Clarinet reeds have a finite lifespan and eventually wear out or lose their responsiveness. Players need to regularly replace reeds to maintain their instrument's sound quality.
In summary, clarinet reeds are fundamental to producing sound on the clarinet. They come in various materials and strengths, allowing players to customize their sound and playability. Finding the right reed strength and brand often involves personal preference and experimentation, and proper maintenance is essential to prolong their lifespan and ensure consistent performance.

How to Install a Clarinet Reed?
1. Place the thin end of the reed in your mouth to soak or put it into a container of water to soak;
2. Lay the flat side of the reed on the flat side of the mouthpiece;
3. Carefully place the ligature over the reed;
4. Make sure the tip of mouthpiece is almost perfectly even with the tip of reed;
5. Adjust the reed by the sides with your thumb - don't touch the tip;
6. Tighten the screws firmly to make sure the ligature can not slide off, but not too tight.
Warm Tips
1. Reeds work best when they are wet, soak it before the installation;
2. Take care when you install or place it, if the tip is broken or curved, the reed can't be used again.
3. After each use, it's suggested to be gently washed with the water and absorbed the rest water with paper, put it in the ventilation and store it the case.
4. Spots on the reeds don't affect the use at all. During the growth of the reeds, some parts are not covered by the leaves. When the dew gathered on these parts, and after exposure to the sun, the spots are formed. Some professionals specially choose this kind of clarinet reeds, since that means the reeds are grown in sufficient sunlight.
