12 best strings for hofner bass

Hofner bass strings are specifically designed for Hofner bass guitars, which are known for their distinctive hollow-body and violin-shaped design. These strings are an essential part of achieving the classic Hofner bass tone. Here's what you need to know about strings for Hofner bass guitars:

  1. Flatwound Strings: Most Hofner basses come equipped with flatwound strings. These strings have a smooth, flat surface, which creates a warm and mellow tone. Flatwound strings are favored by many Hofner players for their vintage sound and smooth feel.

  2. String Gauges: Hofner bass strings typically come in standard gauges suitable for their instruments. Common gauges for Hofner basses are 45-105 for four-string models and 40-100 for some short-scale versions. The specific gauge may vary depending on the model and player preference.

  3. Material: These strings are usually made of nickel or nickel-plated steel, which contributes to their warm and smooth tone. Nickel strings are also known for their durability and resistance to corrosion.

  4. Short Scale vs. Long Scale: Hofner offers both short-scale and long-scale basses. It's essential to choose strings that match the scale length of your bass. Short-scale basses typically have a shorter neck and require shorter strings, while long-scale basses need longer strings.

  5. Tonal Characteristics: Hofner bass strings are designed to complement the unique tonal characteristics of Hofner bass guitars. They contribute to the signature "thump" and "thud" that Hofner basses are known for, making them popular choices for players in various musical genres, including rock, jazz, and more.

  6. Custom Sets: Some players may choose to experiment with custom string sets to achieve their preferred tone and feel. While flatwound strings are most common, some players may opt for roundwound or other string types for a different sound.

  7. Maintenance: Like all bass strings, Hofner bass strings require proper maintenance to ensure longevity and optimal playability. Regularly cleaning and wiping down the strings after playing can help prevent corrosion and maintain tone.

  8. Replacement: When it's time to replace your Hofner bass strings, it's a good idea to consult the manufacturer's recommendations or the manual that came with your bass to ensure you select the appropriate string gauge and type.

In summary, Hofner bass strings are designed to complement the unique characteristics of Hofner bass guitars, producing the warm and distinctive tone that these instruments are known for.Players can choose from various gauges and materials, but flatwound strings are the most common choice for achieving the classic Hofner bass sound. Proper maintenance and choosing the right string gauge for your bass are essential for preserving the quality of your instrument's sound.

User questions & answers

Question: Anyone fit these on a Hofner Shorty bass? thanks
Answer: Yes, those strings fit nicely on a short scale bass.
Question: are these made of nickel or stainless steel
Answer: Hi, these strings are "flat wound with stainless steel". I have these on my Hofner bass and a larger gauge set on my Gibson SG bass. I like them very much.
Question: do they fit well in hofner ignition b-bass hi-series violin
Answer: I am almost a Hundred percent certain that they do. The bases are not exactly the same, but the scale is. Also the tuners are very very similar. The strings are made short, so that the really thin part of the string, at the top, which is needed to be wrapped around the pegs should be at exactly the same length. Go to beatlebass.com get their phone number, and call them-they will know for sure.
Question: I have a 28 scale wishbass will they suffice
Answer: my Epiphone is 30.5 inches so they should cover a 28" scale. I can get very close to an acoustic bass sound out of them with thumb and play just below the bottom of the fingerboard. Love them

User questions & answers

Question: How much string tension? more than standard med flats? or softer
Answer: This set and the 1954 Orignal Set are among the highest tension string you can get. If you play on or in front of the neck pickup they are wonderful, they don’t slap the fretboard unless you make them. They are also exceptionally smooth and a joy to play. If you play off the bridge pickup of something like a J Bass these are not the string for you.
Question: Will these fit a MM Stingray
Answer: Yes, absolutely.
Question: I have a hofner ignition bb hi series , what size of string should i buy
Answer: Short scale strings. La Bella have a nice set, designed for Hofner.
Question: How do they compare to Rotosound flats (jazz bass 77) regarding tension and overall feel
Answer: The Rotos are more tight to me, and brighter as well. The LaBellas are classic old school thump.

User questions & answers

Question: Would these strings work on the rogue violin bass
Answer: I would imagine so. These flat wounds are the only strings I use on my ‘63 Hofner 500/1
Question: Will these strings work on other short scale (30”) bass guitars or is the length specifically for A Hofner type bass
Answer: I have only used them on a Hofner style bass (31" scale), but given the design of the strings, I can't see why not. Excellent strings by the way - nice fat tone.
Question: Will these strings fit on a low end Hofner Ignition violin style bass
Answer: They should. The y fit on my Rogue Hofner knock-off, which is an almost identical configuration. I've had them on my bass for four years now, and they are holding up brilliantly - which they should for the price.

User questions & answers

Question: I just purchased a set of these etb92m's for my p bass. the blue thread winding came well beyond the nut on all 4 strings? just a fluke
Answer: It looks like you purchased the wrong scale strings.
Question: Can i put these on an acoustic bass
Answer: I use them on a Guild B30 acoustic bass guitar. Acoustically, they're not as loud as bronze round-wound strings, but if you're not playing unplugged and volume isn't an issue and you're not a fan of the twang, these are a nice mellow alternative.
Question: I have bass with a measurement of 39 1/2” from ball end to tuner on low E string. What length has a low E length taper that will work
Answer: The scale length is determined by the length of the string from saddle to nut. That is the measurement you need to determine the scale length you need. The most common scale for an electric bass is 34” from saddle to nut, which is called "long scale". "Extra long scale" is considered anything longer than 34”. There is also "medium scale", which is 30"-33”, and "short scale", which is 30” or less. The advantage of the ETB92 strings are, despite being called "long scale", they can comfortably handle a bass scale up to 36 1/4".
Question: The g string unwound after only two months of sparse use. the last strings i had lasted for two years. could i get a replacement g string
Answer: April - I am sorry to hear about your trouble. I have had the first set of these tapewounds on my Precision Bass for about 8 months and I play most every day (not that well - but I try) but I have not had problems with loose strings. I am wondering if there is something wrong with your G-string tuning key or perhaps the gears the tuning key connects with. Even on 6-string guitars I have never heard of your guitar's problem. It might not be the answer you want to hear but I do not think it is possible to buy only 1 string - especially these tapewounds (they are not very common). The first thing I would do is check to see if your bass is a long scale or short scale guitar - maybe you got the wrong strings given your instrument (I got short-scale strings for my P-Bass - go to an internet browser and type in your bass make as well as scale (I would type "Precision Bass + scale length" for my guitar). Buy a new set of tapewound wounds (all 4) and take your bass into a shop to have a tech look at your guitar. Ask them to not only look at that G string key and gears but to look at the whole guitar as well as to replace the strings and do a setup. They will check the intonation for you as well. This will cost you, I know, but you want to get your bass sounding best it can which will make you want to play it more. Incidentally - when I have work done on my bass I stay away from large stores but go to smaller independent music shops. I have had much better luck with owner-occupied music shops when it comes to instrument repair than taking it to larger stores which focus more on volume. Good Luck April!

User questions & answers

Question: Does “Standard Long Scale” mean 34 or 35 inch scale
Answer: Long scale is generally 34" which is really considered standard now. Remember it doesn't really mean length of the neck but the distance from the nut to the bridge
Question: Will these strings work on a UBass
Answer: I wouldn’t think so. These are, in many ways, identical to other electric bass strings. If a normal string doesn’t work than these wouldn’t.
Question: Are these strings short scale
Answer: No. They are long scale
Question: Are these flats? will they both fit and work well with the hofner ignition
Answer: They are not flat but rounds with a black nylon coating. They feel smother than flats and have nice deep tone. I'm not sure what scale length a Hofner is but I use them on a Rickenbacker 4004 which is 33.5 inch scale and I love them.

User questions & answers

Question: These strings are about 1-2 inches shorter at the nut than my fender short scale bass strings (5250xl). can i replace them with medium scale strings
Answer: To be honest, I'm not sure. What is the scale length of your bass? I find that short scale basses with longer strings suffer from intonation problems and a low E string that is REALLY tubby sounding. I ran into that problem with my EB-0. You could try them and return them if they don't work.

User questions & answers

Question: Will theses fit a hofner violin bass
Answer: No. These are to short. The bridge height on Hoffner makes it lon her than the average short scale bass. LaBella has strings made just for Hoffner violin basses.
Question: I have a 28 scale wishbass will these strings be too long
Answer: They shouldn’t be. Try them and if you think they are too long, you could try snipping off the top with wire cutters. They ought to fit just fine though
Question: Do these strings work on a hofner bass
Answer: for fitment refer to rotosounds link : http://www.rotosound.com/bass-string-scale-length-guide/ : pasted here for ease of use : Short Scale 30", Medium Scale 30.5 – 32". The link also includes a 'ballend to silk' measurement so you can double check your instrument's bridge/ball to nut measurement. Lister, you might want to include this in the listing, it would be very helpful.
Question: What is the playing surface material? Nylon or __? Is "Monel" just a name, or a material
Answer: They are a flat wound metal surface ( nickle I believe). Bear in mind, that Jazz bass 77's are short scale strings and will not fit standard size guitars. Hope this helps.

User questions & answers

Question: Yes what would be the best strings for the ampeg baby bass to produce the thuddy percussive warm thick sound sound used in latin jazz
Answer: My best guess would be the tape wound... Or nylon... But if you get the nylon, make sure your bass is set up for it, otherwise your neck will sustain some possible warping or the frets will touch the strings around the 5th-18th fret
Question: Are these too long to work on a short scale bass like the Fender Mustang
Answer: They work dine on an Epi Viola bass which is short scale, not sure if it's the same scale as the Mustang though.
Question: Do these work for 35 scale basses? or only 34 and under basses
Answer: They are long scale. I would email DR and ask them. They fit on my Fender jazz plenty of winding left. Thet are not string thru body.
Question: Do these have gold thread
Answer: Yes...the set I bought does.

User questions & answers

Question: are these good for rock, alternative and punk
Answer: I use them to play rock and funk.Use your amp.and bass controls to get the sound you like.
Question: Are you supposed to cut these before installing
Answer: Cutting Bass strings seems to be a highly discussed topic, but it is not rocket science, it is actually common sense. Since Bass strings have a solid core and a wrap wire, urban legend says that by cutting the strings, the inner core will somehow detach from the wrap. Yes, you should cut the strings, and here is how is done: Thread the string through the bridge and bring it up to your headstock with no slack, hold the string against the tuning post that corresponds to that string. From that post, measure two tuning posts further away and bend the string about 90 degrees on that point. Then, cut the string half an inch beyond that bend (not too close to the bend), make sure to use a cutter able to easily snap clean that string in one go. By doing so, you will not have too many or too few windings around the tuning post (and no, your string’s inner core will not detach).
Question: Is the Cobalt ethically sourced? where can more information regarding manufacturing be found
Answer: Yuke in with the answer of the year. cobalt is a mineral. minerals are sourced with strip mining. strip mining deliberately defaces the environment so id say no. its not ethically sourced. thousands of cobalts died to make these strings
Question: How is this different from 'ernie ball cobalt xxxxx slinky bass set' series
Answer: The regular Ernie Ball Cobalt is a roundwound string. This is a flatwound string. While it exhibits the characteristics of other flats, less string noise, smooth slides, etc., with the treble cranked it can slap and pop. These flats tend to have more mids than other flats and are so bright for flats that I have to insert a bridge mute in order to get a James Jamerson type of sound. Hope this helps.
