14 best tube preamps for guitars
Tube preamps for guitars are essential components in many professional and high-quality guitar amplification systems. These preamps utilize vacuum tubes (also known as valves) to amplify and shape the guitar's signal before it reaches the power amplifier stage. Here's what you should know about tube preamps for guitars:
Tone Enhancement: Tube preamps are prized for their ability to add warmth, harmonics, and a unique coloration to the guitar's sound. Many guitarists appreciate the rich and dynamic tone that tube preamps can provide.
Signal Amplification: The primary function of a tube preamp is to amplify the relatively weak signal produced by a guitar's pickups. This boosted signal is then sent to the power amplifier stage, which drives the guitar speaker.
Versatility: Tube preamps come in various designs and configurations, allowing guitarists to choose the one that best suits their tonal preferences. Some offer simple, clean amplification, while others have built-in equalization controls and gain stages for shaping the sound.
Compatibility: Tube preamps are often used in combination with solid-state or tube power amplifiers. They can be integrated into a guitar amplifier's design or used as standalone units that connect to an amplifier or recording equipment.
Recording and Studio Use: Many professional recording studios use tube preamps to capture the rich and expressive tones of electric guitars. They can be used in both live and studio settings to enhance the guitar's sound.
Vintage Appeal: Tube technology has a vintage charm that appeals to musicians seeking classic and iconic guitar tones. Vintage tube preamps, such as those from brands like Fender and Marshall, are highly sought after.
Maintenance: Tube preamps require occasional maintenance, including tube replacement. Tubes have a finite lifespan and need to be replaced when they no longer perform optimally. However, some guitarists appreciate the process of tube rolling, experimenting with different tube types for varying tonal characteristics.
Cost: Tube preamps can vary significantly in price, from affordable options to high-end boutique models. The cost often depends on the brand, features, and build quality.
Customization: Some guitarists choose to modify or customize their tube preamps to achieve specific tonal qualities or to match their playing style. This may involve circuit modifications or swapping out components.
In summary, tube preamps for guitars are prized for their ability to shape and enhance the tone of electric guitars, offering a warm and dynamic sound that many players find desirable. They are used in a variety of musical settings, from live performances to recording studios, and are available in a range of options to suit different preferences and budgets.

- METEOR from JOYO's BantamP series is a very compact and portable 20 Watt head. it gives you a modern high gain sound with a lot of dirt and bite. based on a more modern British approach to heavy sounds, it excels in a variety of genres.
- It was the punk and indie scene that introduced those sounds to the world, but today, due to an increase in gain, also the metal players enjoy this alternative British flavor. Amp Meteor can give you those sounds in a tiny package and deliver a hefty punch of gain and bottom end.
- The METEOR also has a CLEAN channel that can take pedals really well, which makes it flexible and a great little companion for many situations where your "big" head is just not sensible. Use a TS-type pedal (like the JOYO Green Legend or Vintage Overdrive) to push it into higher gain territory and hear it sing.
- The amp operates with a single 12AX7 tube in the preamp and uses a solid state power amp. the FX loop enables you to put your time based effects (or Phasers, Flangers and Choruses) behind the drive section and keep the effects sharp and not prevent them from being too muddy.
- The icing on the cake is the Bluetooth connectivity is great to practice with PlayAlongs or to learn songs. Careful, the amp is small, but loud… its 20 Watts can be quite a handful. If you want to practice quietly, use the built in headphone out with speaker emulation.

Tube MP/C Single Channel Microphone/Instrument Tube Preamp. The Tube MP/C (Preamplifier/Compressor) from ART is an ideal combination-recording tool, with a tube-based analog preamplifier and a VCA-less compressor with optical gain reduction, housed in a convenient desktop chassis. Used as a mic/line preamp or as a DI (direct) box, the Tube MP/C is designed to work seamlessly with any recording, sound-reinforcement, or electronic instrument setup. ART's Tube MP/C circuitry is a hybrid design utilizing advanced, solid-state and tube technology. The preamplifier's active balanced solid state input provides extremely low noise and excellent common mode rejection. The 1/4" high impedance input prevents loading of any connected device making the Tube MP/C perfect for DI or line level applications. The preamplifier's second stage 12AX7a tube runs on a regulated DC voltage providing an additional 20dB of gain. The compression circuit features a VCA-less design and utilizes optical electronics (Vactrol) coupled with a 12AX7a vacuum tube gain stage for superior musical performance.
- A quarter inch unbalanced inputs and outputs.
- Optical (VCA-less) compressor circuitry = transparent dynamics control.
- Tube-based mic/line preamplifier with up to 80 dB of gain.
- Hand-selected 12AX7a tube.
- XLR balanced inputs and outputs.
User questions & answers
Question: | Does is work on 220v |
Answer: | The AVDirect will accept either line or speaker-level input. You might try using an adapter to convert the connection on the lav mic from 1/8" to 1/4" for input to the DR-40.As always, Front End Audio is happy to help. Please let us know if you have any other questions about this product. Thank you! |
Question: | What do I need for a cable for the out put of the preamp (1/4") male to the sound card which is probably eighth |
Answer: | The RCA and TRS (quarter-inch and eighth-inch) are all paralleled together inside the device, according to the schematic in the package. You can probably use two inputs and get by with it, but there is nothing in the device to isolate the two inputs from each other. It's just like using a Y-connector to feed two devices into one - it sometimes works but it's risky. In an extreme case, the signal from one device can get back into the other device and possibly cause damage. Likely? Probably not. Possible? Yes.This box does a good job of correctly summing the two stereo channels into a single mono output. It does nothing to sum two inputs - it just parallels them together.Remember, Y-connectors are designed for splitting signals, not for combining signals. Rane has a good discussion of the correct and incorrect uses of Y-connectors at http://www.rane.com/note109.html. |
Question: | Will this work with a Shure overhead condenser mic in a church sanctuary? Mic into preamp, preamp into open channel on the mixer |
Answer: | You don't need this adapter for that speaker, it already has line input. This adapter is to connect a line signal, either 1/4in, RCA or amplified speaker output into to an XLR for a mixer board or other device with XLR input. |
Question: | Is this more of a preamp or compressor |
Answer: | It only has XLR out. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will these work in a vox ac15c |
Answer: | YES IT WILL. 12AXY/ECC83 WILL WORK IN ANY PREAMP, AND THEY ARE BASICALLY THE SAME TUBE EXCEPT WHEN YOU GET INTO THE 12AXY-A OR-S...THEY WILL WORL ALSO, BUT THEY ARE FOR HIGHER GAIN APPLICATIONS. |
Question: | Are these compatible with ampeg svt-iii (non-pro |
Answer: | This question looks old, but 3 non-pro takes 3 12ax7 in the pre. This should be what you need. |
Question: | Do they come in individual boxes |
Answer: | Yes, each tube has it's own small box |
Question: | are these american made |
Answer: | I believe they are Russian made, I don't think there are any vacum tubes made here in the USA. As awesome as real tube amps are, they are quite a health hazard if broken due to the toxic materials used in making them. So let Russia and China continue making them, while we enjoy a cleaner environment and loud American music. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I want to use this with a ribbon mic sans phantom. Aim is natural sound of my acoustic instrument. How transparent is the neutral setting |
Answer: | A ribbon mic not only does not need phantom power. accidentally switching phantom on may destroy the mic. I like ribbons also. The ART is a great bargain and sounds good generally, but it is not a professional unit, and you get what you pay for. I bought mine because I wanted a "tube flavor" on some tracks. It does not excel at this. But it is a useful unit in other ways, so I kept mine. It is pretty neutral for a tube device, maybe a tad noisier because of the valves. |
Question: | I'm looking for a way to boost the sound volume and quality coming from a blue spark mic for voice-over work. is this what i need |
Answer: | I'm assuming you have the regular Spark, not the digital (USB) version. I have not used the ART for that application, but I find the unit to be a versatile free-standing single channel pre-amp. It's controls allow setting of gain and output, and it will supply phantom power to the mic. Very good bang for the buck, and highly portable. |
Question: | Does this device provide a both left and right output for headphones (mono, but to both sides of the head phone)? thanks |
Answer: | There is no headphone output on this unit. This is a preamp. It is used before the input on a mixer channel. |
Question: | Can this preamp be used safely with a passive ribbon microphone |
Answer: | It should work fine as long as you leave the 48V Phantom off. If you forget, and send phantom power to your ribbon it will never work again. My Tascam Port-a-Studio always defaults to "phantom off" when powered down (or up) and requires 2 keystrokes to turn it on "are you SURE?" This precaution prevents sending phantom to any input other than a condenser mic, which only works with 48V DC. |

Question: | Will these work with the budgie tube phono preamp |
Answer: | If your amp calls for a 12AX7 the 5751 should work as it is a compatible tube. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this replace tadecc83wa tube for ablackstar 45 amp |
Answer: | Yes. ECC83 is the same as 12AX7. The TAD is for Tube Amp Doctor, a company that sells tubes for audio uses. |
Question: | I have a carvin mts 3200, can I replace this for my 4 power tubes |
Answer: | NO. These are preamp tubes. Your Carvin uses 5 of them I believe. Your power tubes would be 5881. Or you might be able to sub in 6L6 tubes. I would recommend SovTek 5881 tubes. SovTek make great stuff. Whatever brand you get , make sure they are a "matched quad" . |
Question: | Can you mix them with other 12ax7? I think only the V1 is bad |
Answer: | You can certainly mix different 12ax7 tubes from different manufacturers. |
Question: | Could i use them for a adl 600 mic pre |
Answer: | Not recommended. That preamp uses one 12AT7 and two 6922 tubes. The 12AX7 is not an equivalent to either. |
- VIVO from JOYO's BantamP series is a very compact and portable 20 Watt head. It tries to bring you the sound of a British classic that has been molded to give you the modern high gain tones that so many bands now use. back in the days, the big 100 Watt heads were "dimed" (all knobs on 10) to push the amplifier really hard and make it distort as much as possible.
- Out of this came the first amps that were modified to have more gain right from the start. Often, the super saturated high gain sound of those days is referred to as"The Brown Sound"and this is the direction the VIVO excels in. screaming leads, chunky rhythm with a bit of a hole in the middle is where the VIVO strongest. If you wanna rock 'n'roll, VIVO is going to be your new best friend.
- The VIVO also has a CLEAN channel that can take pedals really well, which makes it flexible and a great little companion for many situations where your "big" head is just not sensible.

User questions & answers
Question: | Hi, I'm wondering if these are matched sets or you're just pulling out two tubes and mailing them out? No place in your ad does it say |
Answer: | I have mixed and matched these but now I have all matching in my Marshall and in my bass crate amp they both are perfect with these you can match them but some amps only have 1 tube you will love it just Mack sure the pins are the same match them up with the tube you are replacing |
Question: | Are these tubes balanced |
Answer: | Wouldn't think so. I thought one only uses balanced tubes in the power amp output stages. Whereas these tubes are for use in the pre-amp section - my Marshall amp only uses one of them so no need for balancing. |
Question: | Are these a matched pair |
Answer: | The tubes I ordered were. Jj tubes when ordered of two or more have always been matched, that has been my experience |

- 12AU7 / ECC82 Preamp Vacuum Tube
User questions & answers
Question: | I assume 12 AU 7 is two tubes in one obviously maintains stereo sepeartion Common cathode which is grounded normally anyway |
Answer: | To be precise, the 12AU7 is two independent triodes in a single tube. Like any other electronic component, these can be used in all sorts of applications, limited only by the circuit designers imagination and ingenuity. They can by used in audio and RF circuits... These could be used in a stereo design, but they are not limited to that application. The cathodes are not common between each section, and depending on the circuit design may operate at some potential other than ground. |
Question: | Can these tubes be used in a vintage Vibro Champ |
Answer: | Read through a few articles about your vintage Vibro Champ, and it looks like the consensus is that this tube would work better for the V1 position. V2 would be a 12AX7, V3 6V6, and V4 5Y3GT. It is my understanding the 12AU7 has less gain. You could try a few different tubes in the pre gain to see what you think. |
Question: | pin |
Answer: | Yes, this tube has 9 pins. |
Product description
9 pin miniature preamp tube (amplification factor = 60), less gain than a 12AX7, preferred by blues and jazz guitarists alike.

Question: | Will this be good for a microphone like the mxl 69 mogami edition |
Answer: | This tube will work for your microphone however you need a tube that is low noise and low microphonic.I have a maxipreamp tester that tests for noise and microphonics.I have 12 JJ 12at7 in stock I can go through them and see if I have one suitable for our application.Send a message back if you want me to proceed |
Question: | Will this tube be higher output than a 12au7? for some reason the tube i received is much lower than a jj 12au7. could it be defective |
Answer: | 12au7s should have the losest gain factor of the 12a preamp tubes. That said those ratings are guidelines, since tubes are still made the same way they were 100 years ago every tube has variation. Sure it may have been a bad tube (rare for JJ) but it could also just be tube that came out differently than most other 12at7s. Contact amazon they may replace it either way. |
