12 best acoustic guitar pickups
Acoustic guitar pickups are essential components that allow acoustic guitars to be amplified and heard in live performances and recordings. They work by converting the vibrations of the guitar's strings into electrical signals that can be amplified and projected through a sound system or an amplifier. Here are some key points about acoustic guitar pickups and related components:
Types of Acoustic Guitar Pickups:
Piezo Pickups: Piezoelectric pickups are the most common type used in acoustic guitars. They consist of tiny piezoelectric crystals that are mounted beneath the guitar's bridge saddle or directly on the top, beneath the bridge. When the strings vibrate, they generate pressure on the crystals, producing an electrical signal.
Soundhole Pickups: These pickups are installed in the soundhole of the guitar and are easy to install and remove. They typically consist of a magnetic pickup and a preamp. They are a popular choice for players who want a removable pickup solution.
Internal Microphone: Some acoustic guitars come with built-in microphones that capture the natural acoustic sound of the instrument. These microphones are positioned inside the guitar body and provide a warm and organic sound.
Pickup Covers: Pickup covers are protective elements that can be placed over the pickups to shield them from external factors like dust, debris, and physical damage. They also serve an aesthetic purpose, as they come in various materials and designs to complement the guitar's appearance.
Acoustic Classical Guitar Parts: Acoustic classical guitars often have specific pickup systems designed for their unique tonal characteristics. These pickups are typically placed either beneath the saddle or inside the guitar's body, depending on the design.
Guitar Bass Accessories: While acoustic guitar pickups are mainly used for acoustic guitars, bass guitars have their own set of pickups designed specifically for the low-frequency range produced by bass strings. Common types include magnetic pickups, piezo pickups, and active pickups.
Instrument Accessories: Acoustic guitar pickups are just one of many accessories available for musical instruments. Other accessories can include straps, tuners, capos, and more, all designed to enhance the playing experience and performance.
Musical Instruments: Acoustic guitar pickups are used in various musical instruments, including steel-string acoustic guitars, classical guitars, acoustic-electric guitars, and acoustic bass guitars, among others.
In summary, acoustic guitar pickups are crucial components that enable acoustic guitars to be amplified and heard in various musical settings. They come in different types, including piezo pickups and soundhole pickups, and are often complemented by pickup covers for protection and aesthetics. These pickups are designed to capture the unique tonal qualities of acoustic instruments, making them versatile tools for musicians across genres.

The Pure Mini is a transducer-only system. No battery, no onboard electronics, just the pure pickups. Don't be fooled by the sound of some competitors' "thin sounding" passive systems. The Pure Systems are definitely different. They sound full and rich and have sufficient output to drive most amps and PA systems directly, without a preamp! Advantages of the Pure Guitar System The special Pure surface transducers transmit a significant portion of the soundboard because they are not as close to the strings as an under-saddle pickup. Each of the 3 transducers is designed to pick up a specific string pair, but also "listens" to the adjacent area around the bridge. The Pure pickups are not under pressure and therefore do NOT sound percussive or harsh. The Pure System reproduces all strings nicely balanced, a known problem with under-saddle pickups. The Pure System sounds great just in passive mode! Unlike under-saddle pickups which passively can sound thin and trebley, the passive PURE system puts out a nicely balanced, warm, full range signal. Feedback Resistance How safe is the Pure System with feedback? Due to the Pure System's location on the bridge plate under the bridge, feedback resistance is comparable to under-saddle transducers. Technically, a pickup installed in or on the bridge is a lot less likely to feedback than one which is attached to the open sound board. The 1/8" thin sound board can act like a diaphragm and vibrate along with loud sound-signals from speaker cabinets. This is the kind of feedback you experience on an acoustic guitar. The thicker bridge area is a lot harder to be set into vibration from an outside source simply because of its mass. In our tests with both, steel string and classic guitars equipped with an under-saddle pickup plus the Pure System, we were able to achieve about the same gain-before-feedback with both systems.

User questions & answers
Question: | Would this work on a three string mountain dulcimer |
Answer: | If you are building a fulcimer, I think so, otherwise I don't know how you would install it. They are mounted under the bridge plate ( superglued). UNLESS you are building the instrument, I don't know how you would install it. You also have to drill the jack mount to the end of the dulcimer. I own a 4 string dulcimer and there is no way to install. |
Question: | I removed a k&k, one of the super glued heads was ruined. can i get good response with 2 heads only? maybe on a small guitar of uke |
Answer: | You still should get sound. I am not sure how good it will be. I have not had any experience with this. |
Question: | Is this a good option for a big guitar such as a Martin HD28V? I am under the impression that this is for smaller guitars |
Answer: | No, it will work fine in your HD28V - I put one in an HD28 and it sounded great. The mini captures the true essence of your guitar and every one I've installed (mostly in my own guitars), has sounded full and balanced. |
Question: | How do you install this |
Answer: | It is installed by applying superglue to the pick ups and gluein them to the bridge plate inside the guitar. It comes with a set up jig and some putty to make sure everything is aligned properly. An average do it yourselfer should be able to accomplish this project, but a luthier would probably do it for around $50. They do sound great by the way in my custom 28. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the guitar have to be acoustic electric? Can it be a regular, non electric, acoustic guitar |
Answer: | Just has to have steel strings |
Question: | Does it come in any other color |
Answer: | No |
Question: | Can it permanently installed |
Answer: | Yes. If anything, permanent installation is the best way to go with this product. Some drilling of the guitar body would be required. However, there are accessories included to allow for use without permanent installation. |
Question: | Will this work with a parlor size guitar? Is there enough wire to reach already drilled endpin hole |
Answer: | I believe it will work for a parlor size ... depends more on the sound hole diameter than the length of the cord. I have this on a 000 sized Martin guitar and the cord reaches outside the sound hole and up over the back of the heel, then down the back and attaches to my guitar strap, so the cord should be plenty long enough. |

User questions & answers
Question: | will this work on a vintage ovation balladeer without drilling |
Answer: | You can't drill a hole in your vintage ovation balladeer. Because the back of the guitar is not made from wood but a composite material. We suggest purchasing NEO-SP30 soundhole pickup or SBT-10 soundboard transducer for your guitar. And please note NEO-SP30 only fit for steel-string acoustic guitars whose soundhole diameter is between 3.82" to 4.33". |
Question: | Can I connect this to a loop pedal |
Answer: | Yes, you can connect to the loop pedal and then to the amplifier. |
Question: | Do I need to loosen the strings to insert it |
Answer: | Usually, there is no need to loosen the strings for installation. But if your guitar soundhole diameter is as close to the minimum size that we described (3.82” to 4.33”) or your string is too tight to get through, and it’s not so easy to install the pickup on your guitar, we recommend to loosen the strings for easier installation. |
Question: | Can this pickup detect guitar drumming ( hitting the guitar body to make it sound like a drum |
Answer: | Yes, it can detect the tapping sound. But the tapping sound from Amumu NEO-SP30/31 is not as big as the sound from Amumu SBT-10 because SBT-10 is a vibration transducing pickup which transduces all the signal from the soundboard and the body. We suggest you try Amumu SBT-10 |

User questions & answers
Question: | can I use this and conect it to the preamp my dean exotic has |
Answer: | Yes. |
Question: | will this work with a acoustic guitar mounted pre amp |
Answer: | Not without extensive modification. The pickup has a 10+ foot core with a 1/4 inch plug on the end. (Intended to plug into a pedal board or amp.). To run it into an onboard preamp, you'd have to cut the cord, run it through the sound hole, and solder it to the preamp... Probably not worth it. |
Question: | Will this work plugged into my B100 Acoustic bass amp |
Answer: | yes you can use is for a acoustic bass amp but i dont know if you can fit that pick-up in a acoustic bass i hade to cut a little peace out of my guaitar to git it in the sond hole |
Question: | Whats different between this and the seymour duncan woody series sc sa-3sc |
Answer: | The SC series are single coil pickups, while the HC are hum-cancelling (humbucker). Single coil pickups tend to have a more open, brighter sound but can be more susceptible to hum and noise depending on your stage situation. Humbucker pickups cancel the hum and noise, but also some highs so the sound is thicker and warmer. |

User questions & answers
Question: | is it a passieve or not |
Answer: | Yes, it is passive. Fishman makes this neo-d passive with humbucker to help with slight humming noise that can potentially come from the pickup depending on your system and usage. Both work well, but if you are worried about stage noise coming from the pickup, etc, I would consider paying more for the humbucker version. However, it depends on your usage and needs. Of course, there are other Fishman pickups as well, but we would need to know more about your goals in order to help you pick up the right pickup. Please let us know if you need further assistance. Thanks! |
Question: | How long is the cord |
Answer: | the cord is 9.5 feet long. |
Question: | Will it work with nylon strings |
Answer: | These types of pickups will not work on nylon strings. It is a magnetic pickup so it can only sense the vibrations from metal objects. For nylon strings, use a piezo or transducer pickup instead. See this wikipedia excerpt for info: "A magnetic pickup consists of a permanent magnet with a core of material such as alnico or ceramic, wrapped with a coil of several thousand turns of fine enameled copper wire. The pickup is most often mounted on the body of the instrument, but can be attached to the bridge, neck or pickguard, as on many electro-acoustic archtop jazz guitars and string basses. The permanent magnet creates a magnetic field; the motion of the vibrating steel strings disturbs the field, and the changing magnetic flux induces a voltage in the coil. This signal is then carried to amplification or recording equipment via a cable. There may also be an internal preamplifier stage between the pickup and cable." |
Question: | Can anyone comment on the process involved with running the cable through the guitar to make permamnent? Thx |
Answer: | This is not the kind to drill a hole in your guitar and make it permanent. There other ones make to do that. My guitar is ventage made before they had built in pickups for this kind of guitar. It was strongly suggested not to drill a hole in it so I got this pick up. It works great for me and getting another one for my ventage 12 string. Whether you drill a hole in it depends of the quality of your guitar and age. If you do have it done I would suggest getting a profesional guitar tech do it. It is more involved than just drilling a hole in it. If you can afford it I would suggest getting one with the pick up built in from the factory. I got another guitar for places I don't want to take my good guitars to for $170 from a pawn shop and it sounds ok. So in short this one is not made to do that. there are several ones that are made to do that, and a professional guitar tech will be able to tell you which one will fit & work best in your guitar. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it have a lot of noise since you can't put a feedback plug in the guitar? Also, can i plug it directly into my Line6 amp(4 electric guitar |
Answer: | Feedback would depend on your situation, proximity to speakers, size of room, volume level, etc. I never use feedback plug because that's never an issue for us. Yes, you can plug into any amp or preamp. It doesn't have a lot of volume by itself being a passive pickup, so I would recommend plugging into an amp or preamp if going directly into a system. |
Question: | Has anyone compared this to the "XL" version, is it worth the price difference |
Answer: | The XL is only different in that it has adjustable pole pieces to balance your string outputs. These lower cost "portable" pickup solutions are not EVER the best sounding, BUT if you purchase an external acoustic guitar PRE-AMP you will find the resulting sound competes with the $300-$400 acoustic/electric guitar setups which always employ a built-in preamp. Then the only drawback as I see it would be esthetics. That's the tradeoff for using a temporary or portable pickup. In my considered opinion a preamp is a must. AND as with all acoustic guitar setups, use an amplifier Fender, Fishman, AER, Marshall, Boss, etc designed for acoustic guitar. Reason being that, Electric Guitar Amps are not generally designed to amplify sounds over 5KHZ. An acoustic guitar should run through an amp designed to reproduce 7KHZ+ faithfully! No acoustic pickup sounds very good running through an electric guitar amplifier. Conclusion. Want this or any pickup on your acoustic to shine; Buy the pickup of your choice, an in-line external preamp and an Acoustic Guitar Amplifier. You may have to drop about $1000 in the long run, but you'll have a lifetime of LOUD Acoustic Guitar Joy my friend! |
Question: | Can I use it on the little Martin Lxk |
Answer: | The Woody HC is designed to fit "into standard 3.75" (94mm) to 4" (100mm) sound holes." If the Martin has a sound hole within this range, it should fit. Instructions are included it the packaging. If you don't know the sound hole dimensions, check with Martin. |
Question: | Can this be installed and easily removed when needed? thanks |

User questions & answers
Question: | How does it turn on? (Or is mine defective |
Answer: | is your volume on the pickup turned up? is it plugged in correctly? you should be able to tap on it and hear the noise through the amp. |
Question: | Will this work if I stick it on the composite side (back) of my Ovation |
Answer: | It will stick to your forehead, if you place it there, but the sound quality will suffer if you do that. Seriously though, before you stick it anywhere, hold it in different places on your guitar with it plugged into the amp so you can choose a location that produces the best tone. I had one of the original Ovations, so I am familiar with their construction. I can't predict the best spot. You just have to try it before you stick it. BTW: The plug end that goes into the transducer is a small jack vs the standar 1/4" jack that plugs into the amp. (BTW, they send a bunch of stuff you don't need) |
Question: | How long is the cable provided |
Answer: | According to the details it's 3 meters. Kind of short if you're using it to perform and need to be able to move around. Perfect if being used by the amp to practice. |
Question: | So does this stick to the outside of the guitar/uke/banjo |
Answer: | Yes but it is easily removed. As a side note, it is extremely sound sensitive. As a result, I wound up putting 3 layers of stickers on it to deaden it a bit. You need to play around with different locations on your instrument. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do I need a pre amp to use this or can I just plug it directly to the amp |
Answer: | Depends. If you are near the amp, you can plug straight in. If you are on stage trying to go through a DI, you will need a preamp before the DI. |
Question: | I bought this. The cable jack only goes in about 3/4 of the way, but still works. Should the cable jack go in all the way |
Answer: | It should go all the way in. Remember part of the jack is supposed to stick out to hold the strap in place. |
Question: | Do you need a preamp to get the sound |
Answer: | No, the pickups are pretty powerful. You can run straight to an external amp. You do get a lot of sound from hitting the body of the guitar with your hand, however they are pretty nice, and it's a very good price. Hope this helps. |
Question: | What do I attach this to to record sounds? Does it have to be a special connection |
Answer: | The piezo unit has a standard 1/4 jack (same as a guitar cable) for the output. There are adaptors that will go from 1/4 inch jack to any analog input you're using. The sensors need to be firmly attached to whatever you plan to record to pickup the vibrations in order to create the output signal. Note: The audio quality of this unit is not very good, It's sort of works for synthesized drum triggers and works for window alarm sensors for security systems. I tested them on a guitar and ukulele and it sounded like recording inside a tin can. Kind of noisy, frequency response between 300hz - 1.5Khz with many unwanted resonate overtones giving it the tin can sound. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Has anyone had trouble with the single coil buzzing or any other kind of noise |
Answer: | Single coil pickups are generally selected because of the unique clarity of the tone they produce, but the trade off is hum, this can be made worse when playing near a dimmer switch or fluorescent lighting, which leak energy, even a bad cable can introduce... they easy remedy is to try to eliminate any sources of leaking electricity, but you may be happier by using a noise gate, which are a common pedal, and shuts of the guitar signal unless a preset amount of signal is present, this way the hum is only there when you are playing and would be less noticeable |
Question: | is this the same as FSM PREP |
Answer: | I am not familiar with the Prep102 but I have been using the Rare Earth in my '73 Martin D-35 and I am very happy with it.Loyal |
Question: | Are the actual dimensions 0.5 x 2 x 3 inches? 3" seems not wide enough |
Answer: | That's a typo in the shipping information. This pickup fits a standard-size sound hole (3 3/4 inch) nicely. I think the low end of the sound hole sizing would be around 3 1/2 inches. Nice product - sounds and looks good, and it clamps safely in place. I have several of these pickups, both active and passive, and I'm pleased with all of them. |
Question: | I'd like to use this pickup with a classical guitar. Does it work with nylon strings |
Answer: | This pickup is a magnetic pickup, which requires steel strings. It will not work on a nylon string guitar. |
