9 best trombones

Trombones are brass musical instruments commonly used in band and orchestra settings. They are known for their distinctive sliding mechanism, which allows players to change the length of the instrument's tubing to produce different pitches. Here are some key points about trombones:

  1. Basic Structure: Trombones consist of a long, cylindrical tube with a flared bell at one end and a sliding section called the slide at the other. The slide is manipulated by the player to vary the instrument's pitch.

  2. Types of Trombones: There are several types of trombones, including:

    • Tenor Trombone: This is the most common type and is used in a wide range of musical genres.
    • Bass Trombone: It has additional tubing and a larger bell, which gives it a lower pitch and a more mellow tone.
    • Alto Trombone: Smaller than a tenor trombone, it is less commonly used but still has a place in some classical music compositions.
  3. Pitch Control: Trombone players produce different notes by adjusting the length of the slide. This technique allows for smooth glissandos (slides between notes) and gives the instrument its unique character.

  4. Mouthpiece: The player blows air into the mouthpiece, which is connected to the leadpipe. The vibrations produced by the player's lips within the mouthpiece create sound in the instrument.

  5. History: The trombone has a long history dating back to the Renaissance period. It has evolved over the centuries, with changes in design and technique.

  6. Orchestral and Band Use: Trombones are versatile instruments used in various musical settings. They are essential members of both orchestras and concert bands. In orchestras, they often provide powerful and majestic brass sounds, while in bands, they contribute to the overall brass section.

  7. Repertoire: Trombones have a wide range of music written for them, including solos, ensemble pieces, and orchestral compositions. They are featured prominently in pieces like Richard Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries" and Gustav Holst's "The Planets."

  8. Maintenance: Like all brass instruments, trombones require regular maintenance, including cleaning and lubrication of the slide and valves, to ensure optimal playability.

  9. Notable Trombonists: Throughout history, there have been many accomplished trombonists, including Joseph Alessi, Christian Lindberg, and J.J. Johnson, who have made significant contributions to the instrument's development and popularity.

  10. Modern Advancements: Trombones continue to evolve, with advancements in materials and design. Some modern trombones incorporate features like triggers and rotary valves to extend their range and capabilities.

In summary, trombones are versatile brass instruments with a unique sliding mechanism that allows for pitch variation. They play a crucial role in both classical and contemporary music, making them an integral part of many orchestras and bands.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this come with a mouthpiece
Answer: This instrument comes with a mouthpiece.
Question: My husband played in high school and I wanted to get him a trombone for Christmas, is there specific sizing I should find out before ordering
Answer: Contra another answer, a large bore horn is not for everyone. Large bore trombones are typically "symphonic" horns, that while usually tenor rather than bass, are not especially easy to "fill up" or sustain and are also not usually what you might consider a "lead horn." My advice is when in doubt, ask. Find out what sort of horn he played before, find information on that horn and look for bore sizing that is similar to that. Personally, I played a King 3B (with F attachment) that I bought new in high school. The 3B was a medium to medium-small bore instrument. The late great Tommy Dorsey played the King 2B, a genuinely small bore trombone and maybe the greatest "lead trombone" of all time. I have also owned and played a Conn 88H, a true large bore symphonic instrument, and though I was a pkayer for many years and a music major in college, I personally never grew to love or even really like the 88H as it felt to me like I was trying to fill a vast void full of air. Just not the horn for me. My rule of thumb when it comes to playing for just joy's sake and you aren't looking to join the symphony? Medium small to medium bore. Skip the large bore and 9 inch bell stuff. You can't go wrong with a quality student model horn either. Even a student model horn is a better horn than almost any player is a player. Seriously.
Question: IS IT as good as one of the top brands
Answer: NO. I have this trombone and the professional Conn 88HTO trombone. It is not close to being as good as the top brands at all. This trombone feels like the crappy $100 student rental horn that I started with my first year! Trust me, this horn won't be an upgrade, but a DOWNGRADE.
Question: wath is the diference betwen tenor and studiant
Answer: The tenor is for a more advanced player. The student is for beginners. My daughter is in middle school band and this has worked perfect for her. It has also saved me over 900.00.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the bore size of this trombone
Answer: It’s small shank I don’t know the numbers but it is a small shank
Question: Does the jean paul usa tb-400 trombone come with a hard case? does case protect instrument from dents if dropped or something dropped on it
Answer: Yes. The case is the best thing about the trombone. The trombone itself is not very good. Ours broke within 4 months. We rented a yamaha and use the jean paul case.
Question: is the slide good
Answer: I would call it good, but not fabulous. It may vary from horn-to-horn. They supply white cotton gloves in the case. Why not buy one, oil it up and see if that particular one is good enough? With the white gloves one could do that without leaving a single fingerprint.
Question: Does this trombone have warranty
Answer: Jean Paul USA offers a one year wear and tear warranty, which means they cover everything except damage and drop. As of this time they don't offer an extended warranty but their service and response seems really good, which is one reason I purchased it for my Sophomore level student.

User questions & answers

Question: Is the protection plan needed for those of you who’ve bought this
Answer: I’d spend a little more money and get a better instrument. By the end of the school year, the gold from the instrument was coming off on my daughter’s hands.
Question: Does this come with a 12C mouthpiece
Answer: I don't remember. I think I bought the mouthpiece separately.
Question: What is the serial number
Answer: It wasn’t for me. For my granddaughter. She likes it.
Question: Is this for band
Answer: It's just a little bit heavy for a marching band. A strong wrist can handle it. Otherwise it's nice. It's very smooth with Pond's Dry Skin cream on the slide once a wee. The case cramps the tuning slide a bit, but that is only a problem if the whole band is pitched low.

User questions & answers

Question: How is this compared to the Bach 42 BO
Answer: If you are talking about the Bach 42 BO Stradivarius. There is NO comparison. The Strativarius is a far superior horn. I believe the Strat is 100% made in the USA. The Prelude is a Bach's attempt to make a cheap horn. I was not at all impressed with the Prelude. As a matter of fact we don't even own it anymore. We sold it and bought a second-hand Stratavarius on e-Bay. If you are patient and look enough, good (used) horns are out there. We found one.
Question: Does this come with a case
Answer: ours came with a nice, sturdy case, black with yellow accent
Question: Is this considered a intermediate trombone
Answer: Yes
Question: Is this a large shank or small shank
Answer: The Prelude TB711F requires a large-shank mouthpiece, as it is a large-bore tenor trombone. It comes with a large-shank Bach 6 1/2 AL -- at least mine did. Amazon's description, like the description on the Conn-Selmer web site, says it comes with a Bach 12C mouthpiece, but Bach doesn't make a large-shank 12C. I find that the Denis Wick 5ABL and 6AL mouthpieces work very well with the Prelude TB711F.
