10 best transparent overdrive

Transparent overdrive is a type of effect used in electric guitar playing to shape the tone of the instrument. It falls under the category of guitar effects, which are used to modify the sound of the electric guitar in various ways. Here's what you need to know about transparent overdrive:

  1. Purpose: Transparent overdrive is designed to add a subtle amount of overdrive or distortion to the guitar's signal while preserving the overall clarity and character of the original tone. Unlike other types of overdrive or distortion effects, transparent overdrive aims to maintain the natural sound of the guitar.

  2. Clarity: The term "transparent" indicates that this type of overdrive is known for its transparency. It doesn't color the sound significantly but enhances it, making it a popular choice among players who want to retain the nuances of their guitar's tone.

  3. Gain Control: Transparent overdrive pedals typically come with a gain control knob that allows the player to adjust the amount of overdrive or distortion added to the signal. This control gives guitarists the flexibility to dial in the desired level of grit.

  4. Tone Control: Many transparent overdrive pedals also include a tone control knob. This knob allows the guitarist to shape the tonal characteristics of the overdriven sound, making it brighter or darker as needed.

  5. Versatility: Transparent overdrive pedals can be versatile and work well with various styles of music, from blues and rock to country and more. They can be used as a clean boost to push an already overdriven amplifier or as a standalone effect for a lightly saturated sound.

  6. Placement: In a typical guitar effects signal chain, a transparent overdrive pedal is often placed before other effects like modulation and time-based effects (e.g., chorus, delay, reverb) and after any dynamics effects (e.g., compression, wah).

  7. Notable Models: There are various transparent overdrive pedals available from different manufacturers. Some popular examples include the Fulltone OCD, JHS Morning Glory, and the Timmy Overdrive.

Overall, transparent overdrive is a valuable tool for guitarists looking to add a touch of overdrive to their sound without sacrificing the clarity and character of their guitar's tone.It allows for a dynamic and expressive playing experience while maintaining the integrity of the instrument's natural sound.

JHS Morning Glory V4

The Morning Glory is undoubtedly our most well-known overdrive pedal, winning more awards and receiving more accolades than any of our other designs. We worked hard to make it one of the most transparent overdrives out there.

Truly Transparent Tone

The best way to explain the Morning Glory is that it delivers all the tonal and responsive nuance that your amp is missing, and nothing that your tone already has. It’s difficult describing a pedal that can be set to have little effect on your tone. So just plug into our Morning Glory overdrive for yourself. Then you’ll understand.

On-the-fly Versatility

An update for the Morning Glory V4 is moving the original's front-mounted bright-cut switch to the side of the pedal and replacing it with a powerful boost circuit. And by pairing your Morning Glory V4 with the JHS Red Remote (sold separately), you’re able to access the boost mid-song. It’s like having two Morning Glorys in one pedalboard-friendly package.

Power Requirements

This pedal requires standard 9V DC Negative power, consumes less than 100mA, and measures 2.2"x4.8"x1.6".

Volume

Controls the output volume.

Drive

Controls the amount of drive or gain just like a tube amp being cranked at high volumes. You will notice that as you turn up the drive, it also adds brightness.

Tone

Controls the amount of brightness. Right is brighter, left is darker.

Gain

Engages higher gain mode when flipped up. The LED will turn red to indicate that you are in the higher gain mode.

Wampler Euphoria V2 Natural Transparent Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal

Wampler

Based on 136 reviews Check latest price

Product description

When Brian created the circuit that would eventually become the Euphoria overdrive, he was working on creating a pedal that would go from clean tones to distorted tones while adding a bit of warmth. He wanted something for himself that would be dynamic, have a great sounding “gritty” tone to it yet be able to respond to the volume knob like a tube amp. Everything about Brian is in the dynamics of sound and if a pedal can’t work with him dynamically, then he just can’t use it.

  • A pedal known for its versatility and that old boutique catch phrase “transparency”
  • Goes from clean tones to extremely fat tones while adding a bit of warmth, a natural overdrive
  • Dynamic, with a great choice of tones (from gritty to smooth), yet able to respond to the volume knob like a tube amp
  • Features pre-gain bass control that gives the tone a warmth and sustain, as well as a fatness that a regular EQ stack cannot match
  • Easily adds a little bit of grit without any change in your tonality
  • 3 completely separate gain stages give you 3 distinct styles of overdrive

User questions & answers

Question: I need a great fuzz pedal that fits into my boss pedalboard, with the boss dimensions/footprint? will this one fit? i hear it's good
Answer: Most JHS pedals, including the Angry Charlie, use an internal 9v to 18v converter. I use 9v power on all my JHS pedals. I wouldn’t recommend using an 18v power supply on any JHS pedal, they are built specifically to take 9v and the concert it. You may burn your pedal if you overpower it (I assume, but don’t know). Hope this helps!

Wampler Pedals Euphoria V2

The Euphoria Overdrive is a pedal known for versatility and transparency. Go from clean tones to extremely fat tones while adding a bit of warmth with this natural overdrive. It is dynamic, with a great choice of tones, yet able to respond to the volume knob like a tube amp. Pre-gain bass control gives the tone a warmth, sustain and fatness that a regular EQ stack cannot match. 3 separate gain stages offer 3 distinct styles of overdrive that easily add grit without changing your tonality.

Tone

Coming after the crunch engine of the pedal, the Tone control allows you to dial in the perfect amount of highs. Since it is after the clipping section of the pedal, its affect on your sound is strictly shaping the highs to taste. It has a large range of adjustment, and for best results, start at zero and add highs until you have the level of treble and presence that you're after. Raising the Tone knob will also raise the volume level, so account for that in the adjustment process. Whether you want a smooth high frequency prole or clear, precise notes, this control will get you there.

Bass

Coming before the crunch engine of the pedal, the Bass control allows you to adjust the low frequencies, but as you raise it more and more (especially past 1 o'clock), it can alter the fundamental character of your notes' low frequencies. It also adds more gain to the pedal as it is raised, since it's letting more of your low frequencies through to whichever gain mode you've selected. At higher settings, the Bass control can give you a warm, almost fuzzy character to the low frequencies, a smooth sound that makes chords fat and gives single-note runs a smooth fluidity unmatched by virtually any other pedal out there. Combining the Bass and Tone controls, you can dial in very precisely how you want your EQ, and the range of options is profound indeed.

Volume

This control adjusts the output level of the Euphoria Overdrive. There is ample volume on tap to boost your signal substantially, if you want to do that, but it also ensures that reaching unity output (the same signal level engaged as when the pedal is bypassed) is a breeze. Note, there is a volume output level difference in each of the three gain toggle switch modes. Most notably, the middle mode, ‘Open,’ has a large volume jump. Take caution to adjust the Volume knob lower when switching to ‘Open’ mode to prevent a very loud jump in the signal level

Gain

A straightforward control, this just adjusts the level of crunch desired. As you raise the Gain, pay attention to the Volume control and to the Bass knob. More gain will give you more volume, so keeping your level where you want it will mean adjusting them together. Since the Bass knob does have a profound impact on how much crunch you get in the lower frequency notes and that in turn can change the whole character of your overdrive or distortion sound, make sure to adjust the two controls together. And of course the Gain knob is profoundly related to the three-way toggle switch that adjusts between gain modes

Suggested Settings: 'D' - Ford

Toggle set to Smooth: Gain at 2-3 o'clock (or higher!), Tone at Noon, Bass anywhere from noon to 3 o'clock to soften the low frequencies and make flying through notes sound and feel easy as can be.

Suggested Settings: Crunchy Drive

Toggle set to Crunch: Gain at 1-2 o'clock, Tone at 11 o'clock, Bass at 11 o'clock-Noon.

Suggested Settings: Open but Refined

Toggle set to Open: Gain around 10 o'clock, Tone at 1 o'clock, Bass at 9-10 o'clock.

Donner Dumbal Drive Guitar Pedal True Analog Circuit Overdrive Pedal

Donner

Based on 36 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Donner Dumbal Drive is a true analog circuit overdrive pedal based on the legendary D-style amplifier, provides a clean boost to mild crunchy overdrive tone, enhances the natural sound of your guitar and amplifier.

A real tube like sound, smooth compression and huge dynamic offer you glossy and transparent guitar tone.

Two ways of EQ and three clipping circuit mode provide you a lot of options to adjust your rigs while preserving its fundamental character.

Once you try it, you will never forget the sound of Dumbal Drive.

Notes:

Three clipping circuit mode:

Mode I controls the distortion of the upper half of the waveform, and the sense of hearing is that the high frequency becomes more, the sound head becomes larger, and a small amount of compression.

Mode II controls the distortion of the upper and lower half waves, and the sound is balanced overload, and basically feels little compression.

Mode III controls the distortion of the lower half wave, and the sense of hearing is that the low frequency becomes more and the sense of compression is strongest.

Volume:

Gain means input signal and Vol means output signal. Vol and Gain controls the input volume together. The size of the input signal is also related to the size of the guitar input signal.

The setting of the Donner Dumbal Drive is that when the gain and volume are at 12 o'clock, the overall output volume is balanced. As the gain decreases, the output signal needs to be increased to maintain balance, and the volume must be increased accordingly. The opposite is the same.

  • An overdrive circuit based on the legendary D-style amplifier.
  • Three clipping circuit mode.
  • Two ways of EQ adjustment.
  • Natural sound, real tube like touching, smooth compression and huge dynamic. Provides a clean transparent boost to mild warm crunchy overdrive guitar tone. A re-edition of *Timmy Overdrive.
  • Keeps the characteristics of the tones that the guitar naturally produces. 100% Analog, True Bypass. DC 9V Adapter power supply. (plug polarity is positive on the barrel and negative in the center).(Not Included)

Question: Does this guitar effects pedal add noise to your signal
Answer: It lifts a motorcycle. I am not going to go out to the garage to check. Call the manufacturer.
Question: Is it a clone of anything? What is it comparable to
Answer: Do not know exactly how many, but its not real quick, but its about as few turns to keep the effort from being too much. I raise an 850-900# bagger and its fairly stiff. I am thinking about putting an impact wrench or 1/2" drill motor and a 7/8" socket to raise it, after it makes initial contact

Product features

Jackson Audio Golden Boy

Rich in harmonic detail and overflowing with headroom, the Golden Boy (designed in collaboration with Joey Landreth) redefines the concept of transparent overdrive and brings it up to date with modern features never before seen in an overdrive pedal.

The GOLDEN BOY is a very flexible overdrive with 4 presets for clipping options, an innovative gain adjustment feature that we call GAIN CYCLE, and a 3 band active EQ for maximum tonal flexibility. To top it off, we added a boost circuit which is the same type of MOSFET boost circuit found on our popular PRISM Preamp pedal.

Since the BROKEN ARROW came out in 2019, all of our overdrive pedals have featured MIDI control over clipping options, gain cycle options, boost eq options as well as ON/OFF of the overdrive and boost circuits and the GOLDEN BOY is no exception.

We always want to make sure that our pedals are as easy to integrate into complex rigs as they are into simple rigs and MIDI makes that happen!

BOOST OVERVIEW

The boost circuit is in its own true bypass loop which means it can be used independently of the DRIVE circuit.

One of the things that makes the boost different from other boosts on the market is that it has 4 presets available. Each preset is EQ’d slightly differently to allow it to alter how it interacts with the overdrive circuit in the GOLDEN BOY or any other pedal you may have in your rig.

OVERDRIVE OVERVIEW

Based on the Bluesbreaker/King of Tone circuit for an open, uncompressed and transparent sound, where the Golden Boy differs is that it can run at a much higher gain and instantly switch to a low gain transparent overdrive with a tap of the footswitches. Use it as an always on tone shaper, a low gain transparent drive, a mid gain drive or a high gain solo drive all without bending down to adjust!

Gain Cycle

The most exciting feature of the GOLDEN BOY is the new feature that we developed called GAIN CYCLE. GAIN CYCLE takes the GAIN knob setting, which selects your maximum gain, and divides that level of gain into 4 equal parts. Say for instance you have your GAIN knob set at the maximum setting or in other words, 100% gain. Every time you press both footswitches simultaneously, the gain of the pedal will jump up 25% until you get to 100%. The following press after 100% will cause the gain cycle to start again at 25%.

Our goal with the GAIN CYCLE feature is to allow guitarists to easily ramp their gain up without having to bend down and change it or try to adjust it with the edge of their foot while playing live.

Wampler Tumnus V2

There is one overdrive circuit to this day has been the most talked about, the most sought after, and the most mythical of them all. It’s big, it’s expensive, and it has certainly earned its place at the table. Wampler has painstakingly and faithfully reproduced that magical tone in all its glory in an unbelievably small package, and its name is Tumnus.

Let’s face it, not everyone has room for a four-legged beast on their board. This slender biped slips in and out of a myriad of tight situations. Now you can have the tone. Now you can have history. Now you can have it all without having to sell your prized gear possessions. The Wampler Tumnus, standing up for that amazing tone, but without the outrageous claims often associated with it.

Versatility

Tumnus is a versatile addition to any setup, any style. Stack it with another pedal to help push or shape the total amount of gain, use it as a stand alone OD, or use it as a slightly dirty boost to push the front end of your amp. Even use it as a buffer, because just like the original this pedal is not true bypass. Instead, this pedal contains a buffered bypass tone legendary in its own right.

Controls and Components

3 streamlined control knobs (Volume, Gain, and Tone) allow you to quickly dial in your tones no matter what the gig calls for. We aren’t going to claim it has magical parts, or that we sourced out 60 year old diodes that make it perfect, but we are going to say that during our research we looked at everything available and then only used the parts that Brian chose to replicate that amazing tone.

Gain

Quite self explanatory! This adds grit and dirt to the affected signal. Start with it all the way off (counter clockwise) and up the volume from unity and you have an amazing boost, it will fatten up your tone remarkably... When you bring the gain control up the glorious thickness this pedal is famous for appears - as a stand alone boost, overdrive or pre-gain boost, this is the key to finding your tone.

Volume

You guessed it, this is where the level comes from. You will probably want to start at an equal volume to it bypassed, unity. You’ll probably be surprised that this is much lower than other OD pedals, this is because one of the features of this pedal is the headroom in it to act as a pre-gain boost.

Treble

Adds top end to the signal. Once again, this is extremely useful if you use the pedal as a pre-gain boost or overdrive as it’s the top end that makes your tone cut through the mix!

Product features

MojoMojo Overdrive

Designing MojoMojo Overdrive was both very simple and very complex. We knew what we wanted from the start: A pedal that sounds like an amp, with a very open character and little compression allowing even the most subtle of your playing to shine through.

Joltin’ the Juice

One of the reasons why we’ve achieved such a dynamic pedal is the fact that we use a special circuit that ramps up the voltage to more than 3 - 4 times the amount of your typical drive pedals. However, we don’t use this added gain to squeeze more overdrive/distortion out of the pedal, but to dramatically increase the headroom and dynamics. The result? The most alive overdrive you have ever heard and a pedal that defines all that is magic about overdriven sounds.

Directing Distortion

MojoMojo is a very musical pedal, but it needs direction. It’ll be up to you to integrate it into your gear via the tone controls. Luckily, MojoMojo sounds great right off the bat and dialing in what you want, from added punch or body to added beef on your leads, is fun and easy.

Get Heard

In essence, an overdrive is something you get from a fully cranked tube amp working hard. Simple, but so dastardly hard to capture. MojoMojo actually succeeded doing this in the most natural and musical of ways and is in fact so ‘fat sounding’ we added a voicing switch for backing off the bass a bit when used with dark sounding guitars.

User questions & answers

Question: Hello, does this pedal come default with a power supply? is it possible to get it with an 18v dc power supply
Answer: I know I could answer this in one or two sentences, but I spent a lot of time learning about this pedal before purchase, and I wanted to share some of what I found out so you too can make a reasoned decision. I researched this pedal a lot before I bought one, watched several YouTube videos and comparisons between the original Klons and other models like the Mosky products, trying to find out which one had the closest sound to the Klon Centaur. The original maker of the Klon Centaur said the only difference between the two colors of pedals is just the color of the case and availability of the source parts over time. He claims it is the same simple circuit, and he really doesn't understand why his first pedals have become so expensive. He made a more modern version in a red box with white knobs called the Klon KTR, but you will still need big bucks to own one. That said, there IS a slight tonal difference between the two Mosky pedals, because the silver horse has a 'voice' mini switch (to apply an additional filter) and the golden horse doesn't have that switch. I bought the Golden because it was very VERY close to how the original Klons sounded, and it was super inexpensive. The silver sounded 'tinny' to me, but that is just my ears and preference of tone. In my opinion, it sounds a little brighter (more treble-y) in the tonal envelope of it. Since I run a Strat through a squeaky clean Vox amp, I already have lots of high end to spare, I didn't need more. If you have the money, the Wampler Tumnus is an exceptional Klon clone that goes beyond the original design with more control over the filter (tone/EQ) and gain stage (amount of fuzz). If you are broke like I and many other musicians are, the Mosky will do the trick, doesn't take much money or pedal board space either. I love it, especially using it to drive my OCD fuzz for a really spitty fuzzy sound. By itself, it basically sounds like an original Klon, not really thick with fuzz on its own, but gives a very nice smooth distortion. If you roll back your volume knob a little, it gets an even smoother response and what I call a 'creamy' tone where you have the definition of the notes, but still have lots of gain and fuzz on chords. I would suggest that you go search YouTube for a couple of videos where they compare both the silver and gold Mosky pedals. The ones I found were of varying audio quality, but overall you can tell the difference between the two. Best of luck, and either one would make a great addition to your guitar rig.
Question: Does the stomp button make a "click" sound when you activate it
Answer: I was under the assumption that it is Mosky. Several of the listings say Ymuze/Mosky. I ordered one and it works great. I have nothing to compare it to but my 17 year old and I are happy with it.
Question: Can I use this for Bass recording? as a bass DI box
Answer: Yes. It’s an excellent pedal.
Question: Is it true bypass
Answer: Unless it was noted otherwise and you also had a power supply promised power as part of a bundle or promo, it doesn’t come with a power supply.

Started in early 2007 by way of a DIY repair to a Boss Blues Driver, JHS Pedals has evolved into an effects pedal company recognized world-wide. Josh’s years of touring and session work along with eventual electronics tinkering bring the experience and knowledge of what musicians need and want in their rigs, and that is one of the core values that JHS was built upon.

With a complete electric guitar, bass guitar, utility, and Mod Shop, JHS Pedals offers one of the broadest lines of effects on the market today. We value and commit to designing, populating, and assembling pedals that sound excellent, are easy to use, and work correctly.
