9 best fuzz pedal for guitars
A fuzz pedal for guitars is a popular type of electric guitar effect pedal that alters the guitar's sound by introducing distortion and saturation. It is commonly used by guitarists across various genres to achieve a distinctive and gritty tone. Here's what you need to know about fuzz pedals:
Effect Type: Fuzz pedals fall under the category of "distortion" or "overdrive" pedals, but they have their own unique characteristics. Unlike overdrive and distortion, which aim to recreate the sound of a cranked tube amplifier, fuzz pedals generate extreme and saturated distortion with a fuzzy or buzzy quality.
Tone Alteration: When a guitarist activates a fuzz pedal, it significantly increases the gain (distortion) in the signal path. This results in a thick, fuzzy, and aggressive tone characterized by a sustained and saturated sound.Fuzz pedals can be used to create a wide range of sonic textures, from warm and vintage tones to harsh and abrasive sounds.
Controls: Fuzz pedals typically come with controls that allow users to adjust the intensity of the fuzz effect. Common controls include "fuzz" or "gain" to control the level of distortion, "tone" to adjust the EQ settings, and "volume" to control the overall output level. These knobs enable guitarists to fine-tune the fuzz sound to their liking.
History: The fuzz pedal is one of the earliest guitar effects, with its origins dating back to the 1960s. The Maestro Fuzz-Tone, used by iconic musicians like Keith Richards and Jimi Hendrix, played a pivotal role in popularizing the fuzz sound.
Usage: Fuzz pedals are employed in various music genres, including rock, blues, punk, and psychedelic music. They can be used for solos, rhythm guitar, or as an experimental sound effect.
Pedal Chain: Many guitarists incorporate fuzz pedals into their pedalboards, often placing them before or after other effects like overdrive, distortion, or modulation effects to create unique and layered sounds.
Variety: There is a wide variety of fuzz pedal models available, each with its own unique tonal characteristics. Some popular fuzz pedal brands include Electro-Harmonix Big Muff, Dunlop Fuzz Face, and Pro Co Rat, among others.
Vintage vs. Modern: Vintage fuzz pedals are highly sought after for their classic sound, but modern fuzz pedals also offer a wide range of tones and features, including improved reliability and noise reduction.
In summary, a fuzz pedal for guitars is an electric guitar effect pedal that produces a distinctive and saturated distortion known for its fuzzy and buzzy qualities. Guitarists use fuzz pedals to shape their tone and add character to their playing, and there is a variety of models available to suit different musical preferences and styles.

'69 MkII Fuzz Guitar Effects Pedal. Ready to deliver fat and harmonic fuzz whenever you need it, the Fulltone '69 MkII also cleans up like a vintage Fender amp when you turn down your guitar's volume control. The Rolling Stones and the Black Crowes have discovered this trick. If you love the first two Hendrix releases, then you'll love the '69 MkII fuzz with its two germanium transistors, hand-picked and tested for optimum performance. A Contour knob lets you dial in midrange, harmonics, and sustain, while the Input knob takes the "woofiness" out and gives great overdrive/distortion sounds when backed off. An internal "bias" trimmer allows for adjustment of clipping symmetry, harmonics, and tracking. Specifications subject to change at any given moment due to availability and due to whimsy. True bypass w/LED is standard equipment to preserve tone when the pedal is off!
- Vintage-style fuzz that's fat and harmonic
- Cleans up like a vintage Fender amp
- Two hand-picked germanium transistors
- Countour and Input trim knobs
- Internal "bias" trimmer adjusts clipping symmetry, harmonics, and tracking
User questions & answers
Question: | Would this work with a reverse polarity jack plugged into a power supply box |
Answer: | It should. That’s what those reverse cables are for and why “reverse polarity” is in big bold letters next to the jack on this specific pedal. 😀 Like every germanium fuzz face based circuit I have any experience with or knowledge of... there is an audible difference in how this pedal sounds powered through a supply instead of a battery. They even sell vintage style batteries for the specific purpose of optimizing how these types of fuzz pedals sound. My point is... try both and let your ears guide you. Maybe even try some different types of batteries (different chemical composition not just brands). |
Question: | Can I nail a Jimmy Page 's tone with this one |
Answer: | Technically the soul bender should actually get you closer to Jimmy Page's earlier fuzz tones than the 69, but I'm off the opinion that tone is in the fingers... Really this is more of a Hendrix fuzz, but don't let that stop you from trying for some Page tones. Cool thing about the 69 is you can leave it on all the time and roll back the guitar volume for cleaner sounds... Pretty versatile. Might be harder to do that with the soul bender. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this for bass or for guitar |
Answer: | I use on guitar. Not sure how it would sound for bass, but it sounds great on guitar. |
Question: | do the echo repeats continue to trail off after the effect is turned off |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | What's a good 9 volt adapter to buy for this unit |
Answer: | There are hundreds of available options, it all depends on what you need now and what you think you'll need in the future, and of course how much money you want to spend. If this is your only pedal and you don't plan on getting others then a simple 9v wall wart will do as long as it's a Positive ring/ Negative Pin( the only electronics in the world that I know of that use a +ring -pin are effects pedals) which is the opposite of what most consumer electronics use(they use +pin -ring). That's not saying you can't use a 9v power supply from something else you just have to cut the wires and reverse and solder them and tape them up good. This is what I do, I have half a dozen wall warts that I have reversed the polarity so I could use them with Effects Pedals. Most 9v power supplies will work as long as they're between 100mA and 350mA and every power supply has a label that tells you the voltage, Polarity, and the mA rating so the only thing left is getting the right plug size to fit the Pedal. I've had good luck with power supplies from Cordless Phones 9 out of 10 are the right size and they all seem to be 9v in the right mA range so it's just a matter of reversing the polarity. If you don't want to do that then just search "effect pedal power supply" on Amazon and you'll get plenty of choices that don't require any soldering but it'll cost you 10 bucks and up. If you have other pedals or plan on getting some you might want to go for a Pedal Board Power supply(these go from 50 to 200 bucks) which can power multiple pedals(6-12) and will prevent ground loops(HUM) that often occur when using multiple wall warts to power multiple pedals. It all depends on how much money you have to spend, converting one you may already have is cheapest, buying a ready built pedal power supply 10-25 bucks, or a pedal board power supply 50 bucks and up. I own a Artec SE-SPB8 Power Brick @60.00 it has 6 outlets at 9v100mA and two outlets that are adjustable 6-12 volts and comes with all the wires and I'm very happy with this power supply. So the choice is yours, but if you do buy just a wall wart don't bother buying the Danelectro DA-4 9-Volt Pedal Power Supply. It's a great power supply and will work with the Biyang reverb but the dying battery simulator will not work with a reverb it's really only useful for dirt pedals. |
Question: | Can you use both a and b input/output at the same time or has it to be either a or b |
Answer: | If you use a input and a and b output this is what enables it to be on stereo. I've never tried adding b as well as a as an input at the same time. I would imagine you could try it without damaging your equipment, but I couldn't swear by it. If you decide to try it and you hear a strong him or noise,I would turn everything off and disconnect it to possible avoid damage, but like I said, you would be doing it at your own risk. |

EarthQuaker Devices Park Fuzz Sound
EarthQuaker Devices, alongside the resurrected Park Amplification, have faithfully recreated the Park Fuzz Sound pedal for a new generation to enjoy. The original pedal had unlabeled TO-1 package transistors, so we thought the circuit lost with Jim Marshall. While the original deployed those mystery cans, the new Park Fuzz uses a different set of NOS germanium transistors, hand-selected for a surprisingly accurate tonal match but with way more range in the Fuzz dial than the original.

Would YOU LIKE to command All of existence with the authority of one guitar strike? The kangra filter fuzz is a true bypass, two-in-one pedal that provides a thick and spatty octave fuzz, and a psychedelic filter that's great for sweeps, frequency boost or even envelope filter sounds. The filter can run independently, or with the fuzz feeding into it. This is no rhythm player fuzz. Dig in and play Dirty with aggressive fuzz lead lines that’ll rip time and space apart at the seams. Snl guitarist and fuzz fanatic, Jared scharff, approached us about doing a modern filtered and fuzz inspired by his favorite vintage fuzz pedal, The Kay fuzz tone. Working together through hundreds of texts, calls, emails and mailing prototypes back and forth, The kangra came to life with plenty of grit, teeth and vintage vibe, as well as pronounced modern features. Fuzz get two different styles of fuzz with the M/v switch. In the modern position (M), you notice a more forgiving fuzz with longer and tighter sustain, while the Vintage position (V) feels starved with spatty breakup and grittier, shorter sustain. Filter the kangra also has a versatile filter with resonance, sensitivity, frequency and envelope filter controls. Use the filter on its own to add a unique shape to your sound, or flip the envelope filter switch and open up funky sixties style tones. “On the filter, I wanted to go for that vintage MPC 3000 low pass type of thing…or similar to doing a low pass plug-in for a track, or like a DJ would do without it being too “wah pedal” like, and this achieved that.” - Jared scharff the art was inspired by a once in a life time Expedition Jared took to the kangra Valley near the Himalaya mountains. It was there his journey inspired new ideas that can only approximated by the kangra filter fuzz. The pedal comes in a peach enclosure with art by Adam Forster in white and blue inks.

Catalinbread Giygas
Super aggressive yet buttery and violin-like! The Giygas is the most powerful fuzz weapon in the known universe. Featuring a plethora of useful options, the Giygas gives you everything you’ve ever wanted in a fuzz box, along with some stuff you never knew you wanted.
The core of the fuzz circuit is brawny and fierce, yet with plenty of violin-like sustain and articulation on tap, and the entire thing is wrapped in a clean blend circuit. From there, the fuzz gets catapulted into a gyrator-based mids boost, and then into a tilt EQ circuit. With the blend rolled all the way back, you can use just the powerful high-headroom EQ to sculpt your clean tone. A horde of options await you under the hood, ones that will make our four-stringed friends extremely happy. And HOLY GOD is it loud. It can and will slam the front end of your amp if you let it!
Features
- After the end of the clean blend circuit, the signal goes into a gyrator (simulated inductor) mids boost centered at 900Hz and gives 10dB of boost or cut. Center is flat. Left of center (LoC) is scoop and right of center (RoC) is boost.
- From there, it goes into a tilt EQ, also centered at 900Hz. Center is flat. LoC, the tilt boosts everything below 900Hz and cuts everything above up to 10dB. RoC is the opposite.
- The clean blend circuit terminates after the fuzz but before the EQ. This means at full clean, you can still use the EQ and get a slight volume boost.
- The trimmer is another gyrator circuit that sits in the same space as the mids circuit, boosting or cutting the 40Hz band. This can cut some mud when recording or provide a kick in the lows when cranked.
- The slide switch shifts the center frequency of both mids gyrator and tilt EQ from 900Hz to 250Hz for our bass playing friends! In this mode, the 40Hz trimmer is especially touchy since rolling down the Tilt knob boosts 40Hz.
Walrus Audio Kangra
Would you like to command all of existence with the authority of one guitar strike? The Kangra Filter Fuzz is a true bypass, two-in-one pedal that provides a thick and spatty octave fuzz, and a psychedelic filter thats great for sweeps, frequency boost or even envelope filter sounds. The filter can run independently, or with the fuzz feeding into it. This is no rhythm player’s fuzz. Dig in and play dirty with aggressive fuzz lead lines that’ll rip time and space apart at the seams.
Sens
Adjusts the sensitivity of the envelope applied to the filter cutoff. Set lower for minimal cutoff frequency movement, and higher to really open the filter wide when playing hard.
Res
Controls the resonance of the 2-pole low-pass filter circuit. Low settings offer a smoother more bell like tone, and higher settings yield a more pointed aggressive filter sweep.
Vol
Controls the overall output volume of the pedal. Depending on how the pedal is dialed in, where the switches are set and what effects are on etc., you will need to adjust the output volume to match unity gain.
Env Switch
Engages the envelop applied to the filter cutoff frequency (right), and disengages it (left). The envelope is driven by how hard you play, opening the filter wider with a hard attack and less with a softer attack.
Freq
Sets the filter cutoff frequency of the filter circuit. Use this control to shape the fuzz signal, and/or signals from other pedals in your chain to create unique filtered tones. This knob used in conjunction with the resonance control can produce many unique filtered tones.
Mid and M/V Switches
Mid Switch - This toggle changes the midrange contour of the fuzz circuit from heavily scooped (left), to a flatter mid response (right).
M/V Switch - The M/V toggle switch lets you choose between a more modern feel (left) and a more vintage feeling fuzz (right). The modern position is a smooth and more forgiving sound with longer, tighter sustain. The vintage position feels starved, and offers chunky breakup for a more course sustaining grit.
Filter
Engages the filter circuit. When running both circuits at the same time, the fuzz circuit feeds into the filter circuit.
Fuzz
Engages the fuzz circuit. When running both circuits at the same time, the fuzz circuit feeds into the filter circuit.
About Walrus Audio
Walrus Audio is a collective of artists, musicians and engineers attempting to find the balance between art and performance in sound manipulation. Throughout the years we have been inspired by sounds created by our favorite companies: the perfect breakup on an overdrive; a thick, punchy distortion; an endlessly sustained reverb; a self-oscillating delay. We had to give it a shot. Through many months of late night breadboarding sessions, circuit problem-solving, and sonic tweaking we have come up with a range of guitar pedals as versatile as they are functional.
- Traditional fuzz effect, plump and rich
- Whole Aluminium alloy classic, stable and strong
- True bypass provide transparent tone
- LED indicator shows the working state.Notice:Not power adapter included
User questions & answers
Question: | I'm looking for something for my daughter for a present to use with her bass guitar. Would this work with a bass and have some cool value |
Answer: | I have never played bass, and this distortion pedal is very fuzzy. Very true to it's name. |
Question: | Looking for some 60s fuzz sound. Would this work for that |
Answer: | I no longer use this pedal because of upgrade. The pedal is supposed to be a Bigmuff clone. Its thicker than what i would consider "60's" fuzzface style fuzz. Not a bad pedal but not what i would call 60's sounds. |
Question: | How versatile is this little guy? I'm playing through a EXH Little Big Muff and some songs need more than one fuzz stacked together to get the tone |
Answer: | For additional tone it works like a God. For base tone I would say look somewhere else. When I play through my fender 15w gain turned all the way up it is redic, if I'm playing through my little 2w. It could use some more fuzziness |
Question: | What chords do i need |
Answer: | Power chords only, dude. 😆🤘 |
