11 best recording preamp guitar
A recording preamp for a guitar is an essential piece of equipment in the signal chain of a guitarist, especially when recording electric guitars. It serves several critical functions to shape and enhance the guitar's sound before it reaches a recording interface or amplifier. Here's what you need to know about recording preamp guitars:
Signal Boosting: A recording preamp, also known as a preamplifier or preamp, is primarily responsible for boosting the weak electrical signal generated by the guitar's pickups. This initial amplification ensures that the signal is strong enough to be processed further downstream in the signal chain.
Tone Shaping: Many recording preamps include tone-shaping controls, such as equalization (EQ), that allow guitarists to adjust the frequency response of their sound. Common EQ controls include bass, midrange, and treble knobs, enabling users to tailor their guitar tone to their preferences or the requirements of a specific recording.
Gain Control: Gain controls on a recording preamp allow guitarists to control the level of amplification applied to the guitar's signal. This can be used to add warmth, saturation, or distortion to the sound, depending on the specific preamp and settings.
Compression: Some recording preamps also incorporate compression functions. Compression helps control the dynamic range of the guitar signal, reducing the volume of loud notes and boosting the volume of softer notes. This can result in a more consistent and polished sound.
Effects Integration: In some cases, recording preamps come with built-in effects, such as reverb or delay. This can be particularly useful for guitarists looking to add effects to their sound without the need for additional pedals or processors.
DI (Direct Injection) Capability: Many recording preamps feature a DI output, which allows the guitarist to send a clean, balanced signal directly to a recording interface or mixing console. This can be useful for achieving a pristine, unprocessed guitar sound in a recording or live performance.
Tube vs. Solid-State: Recording preamps can be tube-based or solid-state. Tube preamps are known for their warm, vintage sound and natural distortion characteristics when pushed. Solid-state preamps often provide a cleaner, more transparent sound.
Compatibility: Recording preamps are designed to work seamlessly with electric guitars and bass guitars. They are typically equipped with the necessary input and output jacks to connect to amplifiers, effects pedals, and recording equipment.
Home Recording and Professional Studios: Recording preamps are used in various settings, from home recording studios to professional recording facilities, and they play a crucial role in capturing the desired guitar tone.
Customization: Some guitarists prefer standalone recording preamps, while others incorporate them into rack-mounted setups or amplifier heads, depending on their setup and preferences.
In summary, a recording preamp for a guitar is a versatile and essential tool for guitarists, providing signal boosting, tone shaping, and various other functions to achieve the desired guitar sound in recordings or live performances. The choice of preamp depends on the guitarist's style, preferences, and specific sound requirements.

User questions & answers
Question: | I need a preamp to run from my electric guitar to my behringer 1202fx mixer, will this work |
Answer: | First, I wanna say. This is the best guitar pedal I've ever owned. As a 1/4 in 1/4 out to amp, it Rocks! The low impedance out is a little noisey going to my r-16.(bummer) You may have luck with a gate in the chain. You should buy it, you'll live it! |
Question: | can you drive a cab with this as the only amplification |
Answer: | i think maybe you could, but this sort of pedal is probably better, plugged into a PA system or powered mixer, or as a DI box into a computer I/O. honestly, i don't think this would make for a great, 'amp head into a speaker cabinet'... but it might work... |
Question: | Does this work like the behringer adi21 v-tone acoustic driver , we use a acoustic guitar with a passive pickup |
Answer: | If you want the acoustic to sound like it's plugged into a guitar amp, then yes. If you use the clean mode with the low gain settings, you might get a usable tone. You can also use it as a 'pass thru' direct box when it's not in process mode. |
Question: | Would this be good to go out from the line out on my Bugera |
Answer: | As the V-Tone has a HI Z input, and the 333 has a LO Z line out, my first answer is likely no. But since it won't break anything, try it. You can also try plugging the guitar into the V-Tone and then into the FX return. You may need to put a dummy plug into the FX send jack to activate the loop.Just don't plug the speaker out into it. Bad things will happen. Very bad. |

V-TONE GUITAR DRIVER DI GDI21
Our authentic V-TONE modeling technology recreates three of the most sought-after classic guitar amps, with three gain modes and three mic placements for a total of 27 possible configurations. You get a truckload of great amps in one convenient stomp box, allowing you to go from clean or crunch to super-fat distortion in a flash.
Extremely User-Friendly
Operation is simple; just choose the type of amp, from the smooth Calif (Californian), the bright, punchy Twed ( Tweed), or the Brit (British) with its incredible sustain and aggressive mids. Then select the gain mode, Cln (clean), Hot or Hi G (high gain). Lastly, choose the mic placement from the three available selections. This feature is a Behringer exclusive, allowing you to place the “virtual mic” in any of three positions: (OFF X)—At the edge of the speaker cone, producing a smoother, softer sound with less midrange content (CNTR)—Positioned at the center of the cone, for more upper mids and beefy low-end (CLSIC)—Slightly in front of the cabinet, for high midrange content with tons of definition
It’s a Tone Thing
We’ve also included a dedicated Drive control, for adjusting the amount of gain. This control effectively mimics the amount of push applied to the output stage of a tube amplifier, from a gentle nudge to full-out, tube-melting overdrive. Further tone shaping is provided by a highly musical 2-band EQ.
Versatility
The GDI21 can be used for direct recording output, with speaker simulation or, when used in bypass mode, as a superb active DI box. A 1⁄4" output jack is provided for connecting to your amp and the gold-plated, balanced XLR connector will link you cleanly to the front of house console. Ground loop problems are nonexistent, thanks to the onboard ground lift switch.
Sound Value
Whether you use it on the stage or for recording, the V-Tone Guitar GDI21 is the ultimate choice for musicians seeking an extremely versatile array of time-tested, classic tones. With the GDI21, you get the sound of three classic guitar amps and a superb DI box. Try one at your local Behringer dealer or order online today.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work for a 12-string acoustic guitar |
Answer: | I installed it on a 6 string guitar. The pickup goes under the bridge. It is long enough to be used on a 12 string. The equalizer works great. |
Question: | Does it have power on off |
Answer: | Right. It does not have an external on/off switch. Instead it shuts off automatically when a plug is not pushed into the output jack. So unplug and its off. |
Question: | Is this fishman? other presys preamps read fishman on them |
Answer: | No, it's the same size but it's not Fishman, it's TaoQi Brand which was registered in US. Good Quality. |
Question: | What size batteries does it use |
Answer: | 9V battery |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the case metal, or plastic |
Answer: | Metal Best sounding acoustic preamp for the money you can find I own 4 of them. |
Question: | My unit isn't working with 9v batteries like it's supposed to. do i have to use a 9v power input or return the unit |
Answer: | It should work with 9V batteries. They just don't last long. I recommend the wall wart for it. If it doesn't work at all with a 9V battery I would assume it's defective. I only use this power adapter: http://www.amazon.com/Behringer-PSU-SB-BEHRINGER-POWER-SUPPLY/dp/B000T9L7W2/ref=pd_bxgy_267_img_y |
Question: | Would this pedal help eliminate feedback that occurs at higher volumes with Piezo pickups |
Answer: | no, the pedal had the worst tone of any acoustic pedal i tried, save your money and step up to a Fishman Aura16 Acoustic Imaging Pedal, will sound better and help control feedback!!! |
Question: | This thing only adds distortion to my acoustic guitar, no matter how I have it set. is it defective |
Answer: | The one we bought has been working fine. We haven't experienced any distortion issues with our unit. Couple of things to try: make sure the battery is fresh or you are using a 9V power source; start with low gain settings and work up with tone controls centered; Try connecting the output of the ADI21 to the line-level input on your amp, you may be overdriving the microphone-level input on your amp; your guitar may be overdriving the input to the ADI21. If none of that helps nor the other six answers help, then I'd say it could be defective. --regards |

V-TONE ACOUSTIC DRIVER DI ADI21
For an unplugged sound that’s rich, loud and electrifying, step on the V-TONE ACOUSTIC DRIVER DI ADI21. This amazing little box is essential for piezo-equipped guitars and will make your acoustic guitar sound come to life! The ADI21 combines the features of an active DI (direct injection) box with our proprietary tube/mic emulation circuitry. Enjoy a full 3-band EQ with sweepable mids and a Blend control that allows you to mix the amount of amp and mic emulation you want with your direct signal. And if you prefer the “old-school” approach, just step on the switch and the ADI21 functions as a rather superb active DI box.
Great Sound, Naturally
By their very nature, piezo pickups tend to be very bright, with somewhat reduced bass response and warmth. The ADI21 combines the features of an active DI (direct injection) box with our proprietary microphone/tube emulation. The BLEND control allows you to mix the amount of modeled tone with your instrument’s normal output. The resulting sound is more natural with smooth saturation, just as if your guitar were being mic’ed in the great outdoors.
EQ and More…
Armed with an onboard 3-band EQ, with sweepable mids to keep feedback under control, the ADI21 effectively eliminates the harsh harmonics of piezo pickups. The output is laid out on 1⁄4" TS or balanced gold-plated XLR connectors, which can be used to send a low-impedance signal to the mixing console or straight to tape. You also get a ground lift switch to eliminate annoying ground loop hum problems. You can power this little lifesaver with a 9 V battery or our PSU-SB DC power supply (not included).
Sound Value
Putting some acoustic glory into your recordings or live performances has never been this easy—or sounded this incredible. The ADI21 gives you a full DI, amp/microphone simulation and a 3-band EQ with sweepable mids – a lot of value in one little box! Try the V-TONE ACOUSTIC ADI21 at your local Behringer dealer and find out just how affordable great acoustic sound can be.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this unit accept line level inputs |
Answer: | Not, the zoom not midi in |
Question: | Can it be used independently of an iphone/ipad/camera/etc? i.e., as a preamp with phantom power for xlr mics, with output to an amplifier |
Answer: | How do you plan to use it? The CryBaby is an analog pedal that you plug your guitar into, and you plug the CB into a guitar amp. This board is a bunch of MIDI switches you'd use to control MIDI devices: no audio in the signal chain here, just switch on/off for the switches, and control values for the "expression pedal" inputs. You can't use the CryBaby pedal as an expression pedal plugged into this unit. There is a way you can use an analog guitar volume pedal as an expression pedal (though the range is a bit off.) Search the web for "strymon use volume pedal as expression pedal" for more info. I've tried this. Actual expression pedals work better, but it does work. |
Question: | Is there a ground lift switch |
Answer: | no it comes with its own usb cable |
Question: | Can this unit accept line level inputs? I.e. line out from computer to iphone for facebook/instagram posts |

Product description
In early 1984 BOSS released two strange new devices under the name “The Pocket Series”. One of those devices was the FA-1 FET Preamp and it quickly found its rightful place among the legends of tone when The Edge of U2 used it on the recording of “Unforgettable Fire” as well as placing it in his following touring rigs. The Clover Preamp/Boost is our faithful interpretation of the FA-1 but with several additional features that we believe make this amazing circuit even better. You won’t want to be without your lucky tone-shaper at any gig!
- The Volume control allows you to set your volume at unity or as a boost to push your amp or dirt pedals
- 3 EQ controls to give you tons of control to cut or boost Bass, Mid and Treble
- The rotary switch has 3 settings: Full EQ, No Mid and No EQ
- Low Cut dip switch removes some of the lows if you feel your tone is too muddy and can help you cut through a mix
- In addition to the standard 1/4 inch input and output; the Clover has an XLR output for using as an acoustic or bass preamp
User questions & answers
Question: | Does anyone have experience using this with a bass guitar |
Answer: | Yes, It worked fine for bass and pretty much any type of instrument you plug into it. There is only the regular 1/4" guitar in jack. But, there is a XLR our as well as a 1/4" guitar out. Please note there is no option for using only a 9-volt battery. You need to use the electrical plug. |
Question: | is the buffer always on so the switch just engages the booster |
Answer: | https://www.jhspedals.com/products/guitar-pedals/prestige/In the footsteps of our long-ago discontinued Mr Magic pedal, we bring you the "final act" in boost magic...The Prestige! From buffer, to boost, to tone enhancer, the Prestige will prove to be a vital and necessary piece of gear for anyone's rig. With the boost knob set to zero, you have in your hands an amazing buffer/enhancer for long cable runs as well as a tool that will simply add some life back into your rig. When the Boost knob is in the first 25% you will get different flavors of the buffer/enhancer as well as slight volume increases. When the Boost knob is set between 25% and 50% you have a powerful, dynamic solo boost that adds definition, clarity and a little magic to your solos and lead passages. When set at 50% or more, the Prestige gives you the ability to break up your tube amp in a smooth and natural way resulting in real tube overdrive from the preamp section of your tube amp. The last 25% of the volume range can completely destroy your amp in the best way possible, resulting in rich soaring sustain, breakup, and on some amps even a smooth warm fuzzy growl. When wide open, the Prestige will give you up to 27dB. |
Question: | Hey, can this run on a battery, or only with the PS |
Answer: | The Clover's current draw is too high for a standard 9V battery, so you need to use it with a power supply. Brian Meader Sales Manager The Guitar Sanctuary |
Question: | Where is the idea location to place this unit amongst all my other pedal on the floor? (2) Should I hold off on purchasing a Buffer |
Answer: | I have personally had the best luck putting the Clover after any other dirt/overdrive/distortion pedals but before delay or reverb effects. In this way, you can dial in the volume to work as a nice boost that will allow the tone/character of your other dirt pedals to shine through with the added volume to push the front end of your amp harder. Additionally, when selecting the full EQ, it provides a variety of tone shaping options. Whenever I put the Clover before other dirt/overdrive pedals, it sounded as though the clover was saturating the input of the other dirt pedal, and the overall sound was compressed in a way that I didn’t like. With the Clover last amongst my dirt pedals, I could hear my overdrive tone coming through (Wampler Euphoria), but driven harder and much more open than having the pedals ordered the other way around. Regarding the buffer, it depends on how long your cables are. Additionally, the Clover has a moderately high input impedance, so it will not present a significant load to your guitar or any other pedal around it (unless a preceding pedal has unusually high output impedance). If you dialed the Clover in for unity gain, you might not need a standalone buffer, but that’s a hard question to answer, as it’s greatly dependent on you own setup. |
Product features
JHS Clover
The Clover is an end all preamp/boost circuit for any electric, acoustic, or bass player. The EQ is simple, powerful and doesn’t allow a bad sound. No matter what style of music you play or amp that you use, the Clover will prove to be an indispensable tool. While the Clover excels at being a preamp / boost for dirt pedals, the magic is in pushing your tube amplifier into natural overdrive. From country, rock, metal and even acoustic, The Clover covers every base.
Controls
The Clover has four standard controls and one rotary switch on the top. The Volume control allows you to set your volume at unity or as a boost to push your amp or dirt pedals. There are three EQ controls to give you tons of control to cut or boost Bass, Mids, and Treble. The rotary switch has three settings: Full EQ, No Mid, and No EQ. When set to Full EQ all three EQ controls are in operation, giving you full control over the full range of EQ available. The No Mid setting is an exact replica of the original FA-1, removing the ability to control the Mids and leaving them in a fixed setting. When in the No EQ mode all the EQ settings are removed and the Clover becomes a straight FET boost, perfect for pushing an amp. On the right side of the pedal there is a Low Cut dip switch. This removes some of the lows if you feel your tone is too muddy and can help you cut through a mix.
About JHS Pedals
JHS Pedals is the result of Josh Scott’s desire to build quality effects pedals that stand out in an over-saturated market. Started in early 2007 by way of a DIY repair to a Boss Blues Driver, JHS Pedals has evolved into an effects pedal company recognized world-wide. Josh’s years of touring and session work along with eventual electronics tinkering bring the experience and knowledge of what musicians need and want in their rigs, and that is one of the core values that JHS was built upon.
With a complete electric guitar, bass guitar, utility, and Mod Shop, JHS Pedals offers one of the broadest lines of effects on the market today. We value and commit to designing, populating, and assembling pedals that sound excellent, are easy to use, and work correctly.
