12 best guitar combo amps

Guitar combo amps are a type of amplifier designed specifically for electric guitars. They are a popular choice among guitarists due to their portability, simplicity, and convenience. Combo amps combine the amplifier and speaker(s) into a single unit, making them easy to transport and set up for gigs or practice sessions.

Here are some key features and components of guitar combo amps:

  1. Amplifier Section: Combo amps have built-in amplifiers that provide power to the speakers. The power rating, measured in watts (e.g., 20W, 50W, 100W), determines the volume and headroom of the amp. Higher wattage amps can produce louder and cleaner tones.

  2. Speaker(s): Combo amps typically include one or more speakers within the same enclosure. The size and number of speakers affect the amp's overall sound and projection. Common sizes are 8", 10", 12", and 15" speakers.

  3. Preamp: The preamp section of a combo amp shapes the tone of the guitar. It includes controls such as gain, volume, and tone knobs. Adjusting these controls allows guitarists to shape their desired sound, from clean tones to distorted and overdriven sounds.

  4. Equalization (EQ): Many combo amps have a built-in EQ section with bass, midrange, and treble controls. These allow for fine-tuning the tonal balance and achieving the desired sound characteristics.

  5. Effects: Some combo amps come with built-in effects like reverb, delay, chorus, and more. These effects can enhance the sound and provide creative options without the need for additional pedals.

  6. Input/Output Options: Combo amps typically have multiple input jacks, including a high-impedance input for connecting an electric guitar. They may also have auxiliary inputs for connecting external audio sources, such as backing tracks or music players. Some combo amps offer headphone outputs for silent practice.

  7. Channel Switching: Many combo amps have multiple channels, which can be switched between clean and distorted sounds. This allows guitarists to switch between different tones quickly.

  8. Size and Portability: Combo amps come in various sizes and weights, making them suitable for different applications. Smaller amps are great for practice at home, while larger ones are suitable for stage performances.

  9. Build and Durability: Combo amps are typically constructed with robust materials to withstand the rigors of live performances and transportation.

  10. Tube vs. Solid-State: Combo amps can use either vacuum tubes (valves) or solid-state technology. Tube amps are known for their warm, vintage sound, while solid-state amps offer reliability and durability.

  11. Modeling Amps: Some combo amps are equipped with digital modeling technology, allowing them to emulate the sounds of various classic amplifiers and effects pedals.

In conclusion, guitar combo amps are versatile amplification solutions for electric guitarists, offering a combination of portability and tonal flexibility. The choice of a combo amp depends on the guitarist's preferences, playing style, and performance requirements.

User questions & answers

Question: can i record through garage band
Answer: honestly I've never separated the cabs I Velcro'd it stacked so its like a full stack, lemme go check THEN...................................... OK checked, heres the lo Down.. the chorus is in full stereo meaning it echos in both right and left speakers however its simultaneous and does not PAN left and right like an echoplex or true stereo echo that I could tell? you'll laugh anyways at the chord that comes with the 103, its like 24 inches long.. WHY? its phone plugs so EASY to find old home style phone cables, dunno your age maybe you've never seen one? yea int he day we had our phones connected to a wall outlet with a cable, its like a small like cat5 (rj45 is the standard name) you've seen cat5 its what your computer hooks up to the Ethernet with..all in all its WELL worth it its a GREAT little amp specially with the full stack setup, the echo works FANTASTIC and quite frankly I wish I had one that worked that well on my bigger stuff despite the non stereo panning, I have a Johnson Two Fifty and a Digitech GSP 2101 studio tube for all that stuff, yea man get a Johnson 150 250 or the digitech GSP 2101 if you want true stereo panning, WOW, I work it in QUAD and can dial it in however I like cuz its FULLY programmable with algorithms!!!tell you what tho I have mic's this little Blackstar and IT ROCKS!!! yup, if you have a board that does stereo panning then there ya go! crank n go, funny what I like to do is plug my acoustic into it then mic the Blackstar through the PA and recording or playing live that way SUCH A NICE CRISP CLEAN SOUND because yo don't have all that power in the way stepping on its own dork soaking up all the interference if ya know what I mean, try it you will be totally surprised, typing in this minuscule dialogue box is difficult at best, why so small Amazon?its a great little box (fact I tried em all cept the orange that I'm told is compatable and it smokes them ALL)not sure what you need it to do but for whatever the hunnerd for both is a FANTASTIC deal considering what it can do and the sound that can come out of it... distortion works well too, I love the little thing i use it at the park then in my bedroom so the neighbors can sleep and I don't have to pay finesfor an electric I use a nice 61 Strat that has some really really hot hand wound Gepettos then those run into a FULL Clapton mid boost, the works, yup so that lil boost in signal really makes that Blackstar a beast in its own rights..all in all I give it 10 stars with the other speaker
Question: it has a footswitch jack, can you go from a clean sound hit the switch and go into over drive for a solo
Answer: Blackstar has their own power supply specifically for this. Amazon sells it on it's own for around $20, and I believe when you buy the 3 pack, the Blackstar power supply comes with it. I can't say for sure, as I bought just the single unit. Save yourself the trouble and buy the 3-pack - the amp on it's own is incredible, and the stack is well worth the price. Just make sure it comes with the proprietary Blackstar power supply.
Question: Does Fuse work with this amp
Answer: absolutely not ! The fly 3 runs on 6volts /positive tip . When you buy the fly on amazon, the planet waves adaptor is suggested . My friend bought the fly to his son and pluged it on a 9 volts adapter...... he blew the amp . You may pay a little more but buy the right adapter, it works well and saves batteries
Question: What is in the box
Answer: Yes, for the extension cabinet, which expands this from 3w to 6w. The 3-pack is a good deal, because a) you get better volume but mainly because b) it includes the power supply, which means that c) the extension cabinet is virtually free.

User questions & answers

Question: What kind of power supply does this use? Can I plug into the wall or does it take batteries? I'm not very familiar with amplifiers, thanks
Answer: Documentation does not say, not on the box either. Coverage area indicates it is 2.4. Works very well I wouldn't worry about it. Good luck.
Question: Would this be good for Karaoke (I have a Karaoke Mixer) or for connecting to a Projector to boost the sound
Answer: It depends on the dealer's policy.
Question: Does it come with a wire
Answer: Just received the DWS-3 system today on recommendations from numerous reviews and forums. Plugged it in using my Warwick Thumb 5-string and GK mb500. No discernible difference from using a standard cable. Handled the low B string just fine. I’m confident it will do fine at gig this weekend with GK+SWR Goliath III cab.
Question: Can this amp used for violin? Does it has speakers
Answer: As it is I found that mine did also , after research for a few minutes I found that it was my input jack on the guitar . Don’t know if this helps but I cleaned mine with a burst of compressed air and it helped but ultimately I changed the jack out for a new one and I now have crisp and clear sound .

User questions & answers

Question: Is this a good choice for electroacoustic instruments, keyboards, etc.? I've been told guitar-specific amps can "color" the sound too much
Answer: This is made specifically for guitars. If you use an acoustic it won't sound much like an acoustic would on its own. That said, dont let it stop you from experimentation. That is the whole point of music!
Question: can i use peddles or effects with this amp
Answer: Yes. Its a great sounding practice amp, the 6" speaker can only handle so much. But you can use pedals with it.
Question: does it come with the cable needed to plug it into the wall
Answer: Yes, it comes with a power cable. Great practice amp.
Question: Does this have clean or dirty
Answer: One channel so you have to adjust to get either clean or dirty.

User questions & answers

Question: Does anyone know if a standard 9v power supply (like what you'd use for pedals) will safely power this amp
Answer: Hi, it will take the Roland/Boss PSA-120s standard power supply (9-volt, 500mA, the same one you use for all Boss pedals.) Please let us know if you have any other questions! Thank you, The Midi Store Team
Question: How many watts? Thanks
Answer: 7
Question: If you plug in headphones, does it mute the speaker? Can both the speaker and the rec out sound simultaneously
Answer: No, once you plug in headphones, the external speakers are muted.
Question: So this thing doesn't come with a basic AC adapter
Answer: It doesn't, but batteries last a long time, I find. Also, you can power it with a pretty common adapter, if you have one for other effects pedals it will probably work.

User questions & answers

Question: do you have to string this guitar or are those extra strings
Answer: It comes strung and all you have to do is tune it. You can use the computer for tuning. You can get the sounds to play. There were no extra strings as far as I know. Question: Does this amp have drum loops
Answer: No, this amp does not drum loops built-in. You'll find them on the Spider V 30 or above.
Question: Can the spider jam guitar presets be installed into the spider v amps
Answer: No, unfortunately its a different file format/preset saving feature. They cannot be imported.
Question: I saw a you tube video of someone demonstrating auto tone match using the line 6 amplifi? Is tone match only in that model
Answer: Yes, the tone matching feature is only on the Amplifi series, or Firehawk series. It uses the data from the song being played to match up with tones on the custom tone community. So, not all tones will be exact.

User questions & answers

Question: Would you say this is loud enough to play with a band
Answer: Plug into the wall 
Question: Is it worth the extra money for mkii
Answer: This depends on the venue. For karaoke at home or in a very small room with a small crowd, it may be okay, but for large rooms or big crowds, you may want to invest in a good PA system.
Question: What does the power setting do
Answer: Comes with an AC power cord but does not come with the cord that goes from guitar to the amp.
Question: whats the differance between the 50 and the 50 mkII
Answer: Yes absolutely. It does have one speaker and makes plenty of sound for such a small amp. I use it for both my keyboard and acoustic/electric guitar... It has a standard input jack. You can also plug in a mic or headphones. It's very well made and lives up to Fender's quality. Good Luck, hope this helps!

THE EVOLUTION OF A MODERN CLASSIC

Katana MkII takes the acclaimed Katana guitar amp series to the next level, turbocharging the core platform with more sounds, more effects, and more features. Newly voiced variations are now available for all five amp characters, doubling the tonal options. And the onboard effects categories have been expanded from three to five, providing even more real-time processing to choose from. The usability has been ramped up too, with a power amp input for modelers and multi-FX, updated editor software, and many other enhancements.

More Sounds, More Versatility

The stage-class Katana MkII lineup picks up where the first generation left off, building on the same core tones and features that have made the series such a worldwide smash. If you loved the original Katana amps, you'll love Katana MkII even more. And if you're new to the party, get ready for sound, feel, and versatility that soars far beyond its class.

Five Amp Characters, Ten Overall Tones

Katana MkII's five primary amp characters offer everything from organic vintage tones to modern high-gain sounds, plus a dedicated voice optimized for acoustic-electric guitar. The characters have now been extended with newly voiced variations, providing a wider palette of tone options to craft your personal sound.

Five Effects At Once

Katana MkII now includes five simultaneous effects categories, putting the tone-shaping power of a massive pedalboard right inside your amp. Independent Booster, Mod, FX, Delay, and Reverb sections come loaded from the factory with three variations in each, providing 15 ready-to-play effects to choose from. Connecting to BOSS Tone Studio lets you dive much deeper if you want—customize the sections with over 60 different effect types, change the order with four different chains, and much more.

Full-Throttle Sound Every Time You Plug In

Backed by BOSS's Tube Logic approach, Katana MkII delivers the authentic output distortion characteristics of genuine tube amplifiers, with the sound and feel becoming richer and more responsive as you turn up the volume. But unlike that classic tube amp, Katana MkII's variable Power Control makes it easy to fly in the sweet spot without getting fired from the gig or kicked out of the house. Just throttle back the overall volume as needed to enjoy inspiring, cranked-amp sound anywhere you play, from bedroom to stage.

Amplify Your External Gear

The Katana-50 MkII rocks as a standalone amp, but it also excels as a powered cabinet for a favorite preamp, modeler, or multi-effects unit. Connecting to the rear-panel Power Amp In jack bypasses Katana MkII's preamp and effects, letting you tap straight into the Tube Logic power section, complete with grab-and-go Power Control. And with BOSS Tone Studio, the input can be easily optimized for your particular gear with a high-pass filter and adjustable gain.

One-Touch Recall Of Custom Setups

One of the Katana-50 MkII's most powerful features is the ability to store favorite amp character and effects setups in Tone Setting memories for instant recall. After you've dialed in a sound with the panel controls, simply save it to the desired memory with a quick button hold. Four Tone Settings (two banks of two) are available, with fast selection right from the panel. It's also possible to connect external footswitches for hands-free control on the gig.

Ready-To-Mix Direct Tones

The Katana-50 MkII features USB and phones/recording outputs with mic'd cabinet emulation, letting you send mix-ready amp tones to a computer DAW or headphones. The direct sound can be shaped with three different Air Feel settings, which are accessible from BOSS Tone Studio. Two-channel USB operation is supported, allowing you to track in true stereo with many of Katana's modulation, EQ, delay, and reverb effects.

BOSS Tone Studio Enhancements

BOSS Tone Studio has also evolved alongside the Katana MkII amplifiers. The interface has been updated with a refreshed look, and a number of parameters have been consolidated into the main screen for faster workflow. There's also a dedicated Pedal FX category, making it easier to assign wah and pedal bend effects to a connected expression pedal. And if you're a first-gen Katana owner, it's possible to import your custom patches and use them all with Katana MkII.
