13 best wire tracers

Wire tracers, also known as cable tracers or wire toners, are essential tools used in various industries, including industrial and scientific settings, to locate and identify wires and cables within a network or electrical system. These devices are particularly valuable for troubleshooting, maintenance, and installation tasks. Here's what you need to know about wire tracers:

  1. Purpose and Applications:

    • Wire tracers are used to identify, trace, and locate wires, cables, and conductors in complex electrical or data systems.
    • They are commonly employed in industries such as telecommunications, electrical, HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning), and networking.
    • Wire tracers are essential for tasks like identifying live wires, finding cable breaks or faults, and mapping out complex wiring networks.
  2. Components of a Wire Tracer:

    • Wire tracers typically consist of two main components: a transmitter and a receiver.
      • Transmitter: The transmitter sends a signal into the wire or cable being traced. It is often connected to or clipped onto the wire under investigation.
      • Receiver: The receiver is used to detect the signal emitted by the transmitter. It helps pinpoint the location and route of the wire within walls, conduits, or underground.
  3. Operation:

    • The transmitter injects a signal, often an electromagnetic or radio frequency signal, into the wire or cable.
    • The receiver is moved along the path of the wires. When it detects the transmitted signal, it provides both audible and visual indicators to help locate and follow the wire.
  4. Types of Wire Tracers:

    • There are various types of wire tracers available, including basic models for home use and more advanced models for professional applications.
    • Some models have additional features such as signal strength indicators, adjustable signal frequencies, or the ability to work with multiple wire types.
  5. Safety Considerations:

    • When using wire tracers on live electrical circuits, safety precautions must be followed to avoid electrical shock or damage to the equipment.
    • Always ensure that the wire or cable you are tracing is properly identified and that you have the necessary knowledge and skills to handle electrical systems safely.
  6. Benefits:

    • Wire tracers save time and effort during troubleshooting and maintenance by quickly identifying wire paths.
    • They help prevent costly mistakes and damage to existing wiring systems.
    • Wire tracers are invaluable tools for electricians, technicians, and network professionals.

In summary, wire tracers are indispensable tools in industries where identifying and tracing wires and cables is crucial. They consist of a transmitter and receiver and are used for locating and mapping wires within complex electrical and data systems. Proper training and safety precautions are essential when working with wire tracers, especially in live electrical environments.

User questions & answers

Question: All i need to do is check ethernet wall connectors to make sure there is a signal in the line. will this do that? i don't need a device that sends a s
Answer: This is to locate by one end sending the signal and the other locating it. Best way to see if you have an intern signal is to use a laptop with an Ethernet cable connected to it then plug it in to the Ethernet jack and see if you pull an ip address or able to get online. If you do not have the Ethernet jacks labeled with id numbers of where they are located on a patch panel, you will need the cable tester to find where the cable is connected on both ends. Good luck and I hope this helps.
Question: can this be used to trace wire behind a wall
Answer: Most toners can trace a wire in a wall as long as you can put the tone generator on 1 end. I used the fluke PRO3000 to find a missing plug covered by sheetrock by turning off circuit and placing clips on wires of a outlet then waving wand by a wall area even though you should see bulge of box behind drywall in new construction.
Question: Any suggestions, item just arrived, tested it and it won't even tone a two foot cable, did I get a dud
Answer: Re Elegiant EN61010-1 multi-function wire tracker (1/8/18): Received it after reading positive reviews, but this is an INEXPENSIVE tracer - don't expect too much. Instructions, in broken English, are nearly useless. SEVERAL CAUTIONS: NEVER test a "live" circuit, except the telephone line (see instructions; a ringing phone line can have 110 volts, so be careful!) The Probe unit is VERY sensitive, and the probe tip is almost a microphone - ANY contact will transmit a "bang" to the ear plugs - ALWAYS turn volume down to start (clockwise = lower volume on this probe!). Mine will generate a tone (set sending unit to SCAN, verify by scan LED lighting on sending unit). Turn on receiver unit with probe (red LED will light up). While it appears the probe has a loudspeaker, mine doesn't work or may not exist. You must use their specific earplugs. Warning: turn volume to minimum (CLOCKWISE on this unit!). To test unit operation, plug the RJ11 adapter (with the red and black clips) into the RJ11 jack on the sending unit - no need to connect the clips to anything for this test. Wearing the earplugs (and volume turned down, CLOCKWISE), press AND HOLD the SCAN button on the probe (green LED will light), and move the probe tip close to either the red or black clip ends. Then SLOWLY turn the volume control COUNTER-CLOCKWISE (increase the volume) ... and you should hear a warbling tone in the earplugs. This warbling tone is what you are looking for - it gets loudest as the probe tip moves closest to the wire the clip of the sending unit is attached to. With mine, the BLACK clip transmits a louder signal, but the RED clip will also transmit a signal. It is not necessary to connect the second clip to an adjacent wire or a ground to transmit and receive the tone, but in some cases it could help - try it initially with only the black clip on a single wire, then try by clipping the red clip to the other wire of the pair, or to a ground, to see what works best in your situation. To test continuity, set switch on emitter to "Cont". Using the RJ11 adapter with red and black clips, touch the clips together and the green CONT LED light will illuminate to verify a circuit (continuity). There is no tone to confirm, just the tiny LED. The TONE function does not generate a tone, it simply sets the unit to test a phone line (confusing!). The NETWORK function requires the ethernet cable to be plugged into the sending unit on one end, and the probe unit on the other. Pressing the TEST button on the emitter unit will then test all the wire connections - but nothing will happen until you press that TEST button. When you do, each wire is tested individually, with verification by LED simultaneously on both the sender and probe units. Short circuits will appear as solid or blinking lamps. Hope this answer clarifies for others! The manufacturer NEEDS TO CLARIFY INSTRUCTIONS!!!
Question: Can I trace/test coaxial cable with this
Answer: Should be able to find a scrap piece of coax with an end already crimped on it. Strip the opposite end, leaving the core and shielding exposed. Hook up the alligator clips to the outside shield, and another to the inside core. You should be able to test the cable like others.

User questions & answers

Question: Can i use this to trace a coax cable
Answer: So long as the wires are not powered - and you have access to the un-shielded wires at the other ends (outlets, lights, pumps) then it can be done. Two people and communication makes the job faster. Remember to trace mainly the Hot or Phase leads, since the Neutral and Ground will go many different places. Also, to get started, cross-connect all the Neutral leads at the panel location and use that for the 'Black' lead on the Toner. I've done this a few times. I hope this helps.
Question: I've had three wall outlets go dead (not at the same time) within the past few months. Would this tool help me find the problem? If not, what can I do
Answer: Yes, but there are a couple of caveats. First, as others have said, it has to be a dead circuit. This toner is designed to be used on a circuit with no power. Otherwise you will kill the toner. Second, this unit is very powerful. What that means is that you can get a lot of signal “bleed”. For example, the more exposure your signal wires (wires A) have to other wires (wires B) the more time bleed you will have on ‘wires B’. If they cross paths you could pick up the tone on wires A you are testing on as well as wires B you are not testing on. If they have a lot of exposure, for example if the wires run side by side over a good distance (such as wires bundled together in an automotive wiring harness) you will get a VERY STRONG tone on wires B. So strong that you can’t tell the difference by tone alone. That’s what’s nice about the continuity feature. You can confirm by shorting the pair of wires you suspect and the tone will change confirming that’s the pair of wires you have your leads hooked up to. So, yes, but you need to confirm it.
Question: Electrical panel was stolen and the wires were cut. Could I use this to trace cut wires back to the pumps, lights, etc
Answer: You can buy calibration fluid. Re tune it back to zero with tiny screwdriver provided
Question: could you use this to trace automotive wiring, say from a turn signal light to the blinker module? I guess the 2 major concerns are could you just attach 1 clip to one wire and be able to find that wire and 2nd will it still work even if there is something at the other end of the wire like an ecm
Answer: No the eye piece isn't adjustable, but the numbers and scale are large and vivid whem you aim it at a bright light sourse. I'm very sight limited and find it very easy to read.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this test camera wires with rj45's at each end to confirm proper connections
Answer: I just tried it because I wasn't sure, you won't be able to trace the wire in the wall but you will be able to identify a single conductor when you touch the probe to the other end of it.
Question: will this work on a live network cables
Answer: Yes, it’s a nylon , 2 compartment pouch
Question: will it trace a single wire
Answer: I haven't done it, but on page seven of the user manual from fluke, it shows an example of a coax cable being traced with one end of the alligator clips being connected to the coax, and one to ground, with the probe used on the other end and the rest of the cable before the break. Plus other reviewers have said that they have traced coax, the link to the manual is here http://www.testequipmentdepot.com/flukenetworks/pdf/pro3000_manu.PDF. But you should do further research yourself, as said, I haven't actually used it for coax 'yet', myself.
Question: Does this "KIT" come with any sort of carrying case or pouch
Answer: If you mean a Power Receptacle then no you need a Power Receptacle Tester, its a 3 prong tester with 3 LEDs you plug it in and tells if you have a short etc. If your house or office is properly wired the junction box should be labeled correctly and should be able to reset the breaker. Other wise you have a bad breaker and need an electrician. What this tool is for is for tracing Phone and Network Cables back to a Panel when the jack and panel have not been labeled correctly. Basically it emits and audio tone across to wires and you would not want to connect to high voltage Power lines you would destroy the device. Their is a similar item for electrician at flukes web site I believe this what you want, http://en-us.fluke.com/products/electrical-testers/fluke-t5-1000-electrical-tester.html

User questions & answers

Question: Btw amazon photo shows 2 pack logo! even though you only get one set
Answer: NO! It is, and the specs say, it is for 120vac. House wiring is 120vac. If you are wondering about 220vac, then you are probably thinking (giving you the latitude here, that you know about 220vac house service (which can be either 2 or 3 phase). Only one of those phases is used within the normal house receptacles. Even if you just look at the regular 3 prong plug between the two larger devices, you will see that is is the expected 120vac plug. A 220vac plug looks quite a lot different. Anyone trying to diagnose the (2 or 3) multi-phase service would typically just diagnose one phase at a time. So this *could* be used to troubleshoot 220vac - AS LONG AS you are just diagnosing *one phase at a time*. If you don't have clue as to what I have just spoken about then leave it alone! You are, in the least, going to waste your money, or burn out something, and at worst, possibly burn your house down. Get an electrician to help you out.
Question: Does anyone else have issues with the sensitivity of this unit? I can't pinpoint a breaker, just a range of at least 5-6 push it to max
Answer: Yes! Do this at your own risk, obviously. For some of the circuits in my house, the signal from the transmitter was too weak for the detector to pick it up through the breaker switch itself, but scanning the wires always worked.
Question: Will this work on220 volt
Answer: If you just need to test for continuity then you can put an rj45 jack on each end and tone one end and test the other you can see if you have continuity
Question: If you take the breaker plate off can you get a better indication on a specific wire going into a breaker
Answer: you will still have to connect the generator to the cable somewhere. since they are low voltage it should work.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use this to trace 12v dc wiring on a boat
Answer: Yes, this would work. However, this unit this unit has a weak signal strength, meaning that as you trace a wire the signal sound fades away. Let's say you have 20 ft. of hidden wire. One end starts in a light switch box and the other end is unknown. As you begin to trace the wire the signal sound goes away before you get to the other end of the wire. There are better devices out there. I wouldn't buy this one again.
Question: Can this be used for a single wire, or do I have to have two to connect to
Answer: Use CAUTION!!! This unit is NOT designed to be used on LIVE ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS! Disconnect power from the line you want to trace. It should work fine for it's intended purpose, to trace wires! Use an appropriate Volt meter to trace live circuits. If you are not experienced/qualified to work on High Voltage circuits you should leave that work to someone who is. 480 volts will likely kill you if you make the mistake of being a circuit element! This is no joking matter! Be careful!
Question: I have a dc wire at switch in my rv. switch has power. the wires goes to somewhere in ceiling but not to a fixture. ie wire just ends. will this work
Answer: We used it in our home, on in wall power lines that weren't live & it was a very awesome and a super handy device. I know the lines aren't supposed to be "hot", but IDK about networks.
Question: Does it work to check a 480 volt wire
Answer: Yes it will send a signal back to the panel .I would use the hot or black wire and make sure the power is off and all the circuit breakers are open. It should work .

Test a variety of cables using the supplied pointed, flat, or alligator clip probes. The unit is designed to test up to 250V AC or DC, so you can use it for normal household tracing.

Not Just for Live Wires

The Fox HotWire can also be used to tone cable TV/COAX cables, Ethernet cables, and any other copper cable.

TrueTrace Cadence Shift and Selectable Tracer Tone

Positively identify cables or cable pairs with a momentary short (of non-live wire). The cadence of the tracer's tone changes, confirming the ID. Choose between a high output warble or pulse tracer tone.

Tone/Battery LED

An LED indicator visually confirms that the tracer tone is on and shows the battery's status. A magnetic back allows you to mount the Fox HotWire to steel surfaces.

Filter Removes Electrical Interference

The tone from other toners gets "lost" in the noise of electrical interference. The Hound HotWire includes an advanced filtering system to ensure you can still trace the wire even if the wire is still live. You can also filter out the noise produced by interference from fluorescent lights with the press of a button.

Built-In Signal Strength Indicator and Headlight

The Hound HotWire identifies the Fox's tracer tone up to 3 feet away (6 inches away if cable is buried) and features both audible and visual signal strength indicators. A bright LED gives you a visual indication when you are closest to the wire, even when an earphone is used. Built-in LED headlights allow you to illuminate dark areas.

Adjustable Sensitivity and Volume Control

Adjustable sensitivity allows you to trace the wire through walls all the way to the specific circuit on the circuit breaker. It also includes an earphone jack so you can trace wires without disturbing anyone. (Earphones with shielded wires are recommended to reduce the possibility of feedback from the cable to the probe tip.)

User questions & answers

Question: If one end of a cable is connected to the emitter and the other end is not connected to anything, will the probe detect
Answer: Yes it can be used on automobile wiring, but be careful of wires that have voltage on them. I would rather use a multi meter on wiring that have power on them.Yet one can send the tone signal on selected wires and use the tracer function to find where they go.
Question: Does this set come with a case
Answer: I've had mine for 2 months and haven't had to replace it. I use it approx 3-5 times a week. Hope this helps.
Question: will this work on automobile wiring
Answer: Two 9 volt batteries one in each piece. They will last quite a while but using the lights would exhaust the battery more quickly. I started using mine a year ago and still have the same batteries but I doubt I used it more than 2 hours total on time and I didn't need the lights.
Question: How long does the battery last
Answer: No. The transmitter requires power. As mentioned in the first line of the Product Description "Handheld wire and cable tracing kit for finding live wires on 120V and 220V circuits in walls, ceilings, and floors". Note Live (powered) Wires.

User questions & answers

Question: What guages of wire can you trace with this
Answer: This 521A will certainly allow you to trace the route of any conductor buried in soil. However, detecting breaks in wires is the tricky one for all cable locators as they all rely on following the “current” flowing in the conductor, if there’s a break then current won’t flow. If you suspect that only one of the two wires is broken, follow the route of the good wire first then try the broken one and see where the signal drops away. This will be tricky with the low frequency 521A, you may have better luck with the high frequency 501 Tracker II.
Question: Sender is batery powered L-IOn
Answer: Yes I found wires as deep as 6 feet
