I would say that if you were to get an extension, to make sure it's a low-number gauge, and as short as possible. That should decrease the possibility of it heating up and causing a fire. But of course it would be best to plug it in directly to an outlet.

Answer:	When the compressor kicks on, it makes a very slight noise just like any fridge, but it's relatively quiet. Aside from that, it's completely silent. I have mine under my L-shaped desk at work and I never hear it.
