12 best wine refractometers

A wine refractometer is a specialized instrument used in winemaking and viticulture to measure the sugar content in grapes or grape juice, which is a critical parameter for determining the potential alcohol content of the resulting wine. Here are some key points about wine refractometers:

  1. Principle of Operation: Wine refractometers operate based on the principle of refraction, where they measure how light bends as it passes through a liquid sample. The amount of bending, or refraction, is proportional to the sugar concentration in the sample.

  2. Brix Scale: The sugar content in grapes or grape juice is typically measured in degrees Brix, which represents the percentage of sugar by weight. Wine refractometers are calibrated to measure sugar content in Brix units.

  3. Grape Ripeness Assessment: Winemakers use wine refractometers to assess the ripeness of grapes before harvesting. Grapes with higher sugar levels are typically riper and are more likely to produce wines with higher alcohol content.

  4. Harvest Timing: By regularly measuring the sugar content of grapes as they ripen, winemakers can determine the optimal time for grape harvesting. This helps ensure that the grapes are picked at their peak ripeness, which is crucial for wine quality.

  5. Fermentation Monitoring: After grapes are crushed and the juice is extracted, wine refractometers can also be used to monitor the progress of fermentation. As yeast consumes sugar and converts it into alcohol, the Brix reading decreases.

  6. Portable and Handheld: Many wine refractometers are designed to be portable and handheld, making them convenient for use in the vineyard or winery. They are typically compact and easy to operate.

  7. Temperature Compensation: Temperature can affect the accuracy of refractometer readings. Some wine refractometers have built-in temperature compensation features to provide accurate results even when the sample temperature varies.

  8. Calibration: Wine refractometers should be calibrated regularly to maintain accuracy. Calibration involves testing the instrument with a known standard solution to ensure its readings are correct.

  9. Cleaning and Maintenance: Proper cleaning and maintenance are essential to keep a wine refractometer in good working condition. It's important to clean the prism or measuring surface after each use to prevent residue buildup.

In summary, wine refractometers are valuable tools in winemaking and viticulture, helping winemakers assess grape ripeness, determine harvest timing, and monitor fermentation. These portable instruments measure sugar content in grapes or grape juice in Brix units and are crucial for producing wines with desired alcohol levels and flavors.

User questions & answers

Question: My refractometer is impossible to calibrate... anybody else have issues or tips
Answer: I used distilled water and put three drops on the prism. Close it so there is no air bubbles and right under the light it should have a blue tint to it. Just lining the Blue tint line to the 0 line.
Question: does it measure brix for grape to know if it is ready to harvest for wine
Answer: Yes it does. I've tested boxes of (Zinfandel) grapes from California in September that I use for wine-making and they've been in the neighborhood of 23-25 brix. I'm sure you can read about higher brix levels but that's about what I get for those grapes and this device. All you do is squeeze a drop or two onto the sloped lens, close the clear cover over so it smears, hold it up to the light and read the scale. You can try several grapes or crush a number of them together to get an average.
Question: can I use this for melases ? and how to use
Answer: I am assuming the by melases you mean molasses. I have not tried to measure the specific gravity (SG) of molasses but I suspect you will have trouble with pure molasses. The SG might be out of range and the dark color of molasses may make it hard to read. If the molasses is dissolved in water then yes you should be able to use the reflectometer. To use a refractometer first zero the refractometer using plan water close to the same temperature as what you are measuring. SG is dependent on temperature. Once zeroed dry the surface and put a couple of drops of what you want to measure on the refractometer and read the results. The refractometer is easier to read in bright light: sunlight or a flashlight.
Question: Can i use this to test the sugar content of my homegrown fruits and vegetables
Answer: Yes, you can.

User questions & answers

Question: Would I need to check calibration with each measurement I do, or at the beginning of my brew day to check wort which I do several times
Answer: Legs mount inside, but seat turns so one can enter from the outside of tub, then it turns so it can slide and turn to be inside tub. We use this for my 97 year old father. His assisted living staff thinks it is awesome bath chair.
Question: Can this refractometer measure the water content of a ethylene and propylene glycol solution? I need it to check for water contamination
Answer: Majority of people who will use this type of bath chair use a hand held shower head. No you cannot shut a glass shower door if you are using this chair-Or any type of slide in chair. But if you use a hand held shower head, water stays in a close to body.
Question: How does this product compare to the Atago 3810 refractometer
Answer: I don't have the exact measurements because I discarded the cartons awhile ago. But as I remember it may be about 40 x 20 x 6"
Question: What does 0 - 85% brix mean on the specifications? They have another model that does 0 - 50%. Thanks for any insight
Answer: It cannot be decreased. It can only be increased by a 4" extension kit or an 8" extension kit.

Beslands Refractometer for Grape Wine Brewing, 0-40% Brix & 0-25% vol Alcohol Dual Scale with ATC, Measuring Sugar Content in Original Grape Juice and Predicting Wine Alcohol Degree

Beslands

Based on 20 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Description:

This Refractometer is mainly to measure the sugar content of the grape juice, so as to predict the alcohol content of the wine to be produced. Because the alcohol content of wine is positively related to the sugar content of grape juice, of course, if you use it as a sugar content meter, it is also possible

It is designed based on the principle that liquids of different concentrations have different refractive indices. It has the advantages of speed, accuracy, light weight and small volume.

Usage:

Open the cover and carefully inspect the prism with a soft cloth.

Take a few drops of the solution to be measured and place it on the detection prism. Then gently close the cover to avoid air bubbles and spread the solution over the entire prism surface. Aim the light entrance plate of the instrument at the light source or a bright place, observe the field of view through the eyepiece, and turn the eyepiece to adjust the handwheel to make the blue and white border of the field of view clear. The scale of the dividing line is the concentration of the solution.

Calibration and Temperature Calibration:

The instrument needs to be calibrated to zero before measurement. Take a few drops of distilled water and place it on the detection prism. Turn the zero adjustment screw to adjust the scale to 0% of the scale. The detection prism is then wiped and tested.

Another method (only for determining the sugar content) is to use a temperature correction table and then add (or subtract) the temperature correction value to the value read at ambient temperature to get an accurate value. (The manual includes a temperature correction table for sugar readings.)

Package:

1 x Refractometer,

1 x A hard plastic case,

1 x Mini screwdriver,

1 x Pipette,

1 x Instruction manual

  • This refractometer is used to measure the sugar content in the original grape juice, then the alcohol content in the wine (to be made from the grape juice) can be known from the scale, and the grapes juice can be fermented by measuring the alcohol content (by volume) of the wine juice
  • Measuring Range - Brix: 0-40% , Alcohol: 0-25%
  • Easy to Use - Place 2, 3 drops of the sample on the main prism, close the plate and look through the viewing window to read the Brix value
  • Calibration - Zero calibration with water at 20 ° C, automatic temperature compensation 0-30 ° C (ATC)
  • Package - Refractometer, A hard plastic case, Mini screwdriver, 1* Pipette, Instruction manual.

User questions & answers

Question: Do batteries needed
Answer: It only rotates it place. I was worried about how hard it would be to place the person on the chair with it being fixed in the middle of the tub. But I measured our bathtub width (28.25") and the height (14.5") and I determined that with the seat in the center of the tub it would be no worse than transferring my wife to the sofa. When I got the chair, this proved to be true. With the dimensions of our tub, placing my wife on the seat is very simple. You'll have to take measurements and determine if this is true for your situation.
Question: Is this a regular refractometer I can use for other purposes or somehow specific for honey
Answer: Yes, it will work on a bathtub that is 29.5" wide. The Overall Dimensions are 27.5″ - 34″w x 22.5″d.
Question: How often do you re-calibrate, and when would you know if it needs to be re-calibrated
Answer: Thanks for your question. This tub-mount transfer bench has a tub clamp that require the tub wall to be flat on top as well as on the outside in order for the clamp to work properly. Also, the inside tub wall can be sloped, but the surface needs to be flat. We do have a Swivel Sliding Transfer Bench (Eagle Health Supplies #77662) that doesn't have a tub clamp, which would work with a round tub, but please be aware that this bench has legs that sit outside the tub. We also have longer length benches (77682 or 77692). Feel free to call us at (800) 755-8999 and we would be happy to help you.
Question: Is the eyepiece adjustable to allow you to focus on the values you're looking at
Answer: Thanks for your question. This bench (77762) fits tub walls with height of 13"-17.5" (measured from the inside). The tub clamp fits on the outer tub wall while the inside of the bench sits on legs. There are taller legs (adds 8") available. You would need two for this bench. Please contact us M-F 8am-4pm PT at 800-755-8999. We would be happy to help you.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this give me the percentage of alcohol in a finished beer without knowing the original gravity
Answer: It measures % alcohol by v/v, not specifc gravity.
Question: Does this refractometer actually measure the alcohol abv of a finished wine, or just the sugar content before and after fermentation to infer a pabv
Answer: You have to put a drop of the alcohol to measure. As the description says range between 0 and 80%. I found that above 70% is not that accurate any more. This is good for checking home brewing of wine or beer.
Question: Can you use this device to measure sugar and alcohol level on Kombucha
Answer: Hello,No batteries needed for this refractometer,it's portable when you go out. It's a tool designed based on the function of refraction.
