Question: | All i need to do is check ethernet wall connectors to make sure there is a signal in the line. will this do that? i don't need a device that sends a s |
Answer: | This is to locate by one end sending the signal and the other locating it. Best way to see if you have an intern signal is to use a laptop with an Ethernet cable connected to it then plug it in to the Ethernet jack and see if you pull an ip address or able to get online. If you do not have the Ethernet jacks labeled with id numbers of where they are located on a patch panel, you will need the cable tester to find where the cable is connected on both ends. Good luck and I hope this helps. |
Question: | can this be used to trace wire behind a wall |
Answer: | Most toners can trace a wire in a wall as long as you can put the tone generator on 1 end. I used the fluke PRO3000 to find a missing plug covered by sheetrock by turning off circuit and placing clips on wires of a outlet then waving wand by a wall area even though you should see bulge of box behind drywall in new construction. |
Question: | Any suggestions, item just arrived, tested it and it won't even tone a two foot cable, did I get a dud |
Answer: | Re Elegiant EN61010-1 multi-function wire tracker (1/8/18): Received it after reading positive reviews, but this is an INEXPENSIVE tracer - don't expect too much. Instructions, in broken English, are nearly useless. SEVERAL CAUTIONS: NEVER test a "live" circuit, except the telephone line (see instructions; a ringing phone line can have 110 volts, so be careful!) The Probe unit is VERY sensitive, and the probe tip is almost a microphone - ANY contact will transmit a "bang" to the ear plugs - ALWAYS turn volume down to start (clockwise = lower volume on this probe!). Mine will generate a tone (set sending unit to SCAN, verify by scan LED lighting on sending unit). Turn on receiver unit with probe (red LED will light up). While it appears the probe has a loudspeaker, mine doesn't work or may not exist. You must use their specific earplugs. Warning: turn volume to minimum (CLOCKWISE on this unit!). To test unit operation, plug the RJ11 adapter (with the red and black clips) into the RJ11 jack on the sending unit - no need to connect the clips to anything for this test. Wearing the earplugs (and volume turned down, CLOCKWISE), press AND HOLD the SCAN button on the probe (green LED will light), and move the probe tip close to either the red or black clip ends. Then SLOWLY turn the volume control COUNTER-CLOCKWISE (increase the volume) ... and you should hear a warbling tone in the earplugs. This warbling tone is what you are looking for - it gets loudest as the probe tip moves closest to the wire the clip of the sending unit is attached to. With mine, the BLACK clip transmits a louder signal, but the RED clip will also transmit a signal. It is not necessary to connect the second clip to an adjacent wire or a ground to transmit and receive the tone, but in some cases it could help - try it initially with only the black clip on a single wire, then try by clipping the red clip to the other wire of the pair, or to a ground, to see what works best in your situation. To test continuity, set switch on emitter to "Cont". Using the RJ11 adapter with red and black clips, touch the clips together and the green CONT LED light will illuminate to verify a circuit (continuity). There is no tone to confirm, just the tiny LED. The TONE function does not generate a tone, it simply sets the unit to test a phone line (confusing!). The NETWORK function requires the ethernet cable to be plugged into the sending unit on one end, and the probe unit on the other. Pressing the TEST button on the emitter unit will then test all the wire connections - but nothing will happen until you press that TEST button. When you do, each wire is tested individually, with verification by LED simultaneously on both the sender and probe units. Short circuits will appear as solid or blinking lamps. Hope this answer clarifies for others! The manufacturer NEEDS TO CLARIFY INSTRUCTIONS!!! |
Question: | Can I trace/test coaxial cable with this |
Answer: | Should be able to find a scrap piece of coax with an end already crimped on it. Strip the opposite end, leaving the core and shielding exposed. Hook up the alligator clips to the outside shield, and another to the inside core. You should be able to test the cable like others. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it estimate distance to break |
Answer: | No. This is just tool is just basically a Continuity Tester that allows you to test connections on between two end to insure ALL EIGHT (Internet)/FOUR (Hardline Telephone) wires ARE..in fact connected between them. The Remote feature is used when you want to check Continuity of connectors already installed from one room to another. This feature is the best for me. Although..Pay attention to the statement above that the Cable Connections being tested should not be Powered (Such as Phone Lines) or damage to the tester may occur. There IS NO tool that can estimate the distance to a Potential Break that I am aware of. Pulling and replacing Old wire with new may be the only option there. |
Question: | There are 3 different testers for sale, which do I need to test my cat 6 cables installed by electrician and my own cables? Connection is spotty |
Answer: | One that does rj45. Cat6 cables have rj45 connectors. This tester will only tell you if the wires are connected in the proper order, not if the quality of the connection is good enough. That requires a much more expensive tester. |
Question: | what does is mean the lights just keep sycaling |
Answer: | When you are doing the test, the lights continue to go through the cycle 1, 2, 3, etc., testing the pairs. If there is a problem with a pair, the lights cycle will indicate by going 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 5, etc., indicating a problem between pair 5 & 6. You might not see that the first time so the lights will just continue to run through the sequence so you can continue to see where the problem pair is located. It just means that the lights continue until you turn off the test. It works great and it’s very simple to use. Once you use it, you will understand what the “sycaling” means. It just doesn’t do it once and then stops, it continues to sycaling through. |
Question: | I need to define which cable is linked to each room in house as they all terminate in a single box in closet. Will this define which cable is which |
Answer: | Yes, but it will require patience and a bit of time. First unplug all LAN cables from your switch or router in the closet. Also unplug any computers or printers or switches in all of the rooms. This tester is not meant to test “live” cables. If you are testing jacks (not terminated cables) you will need a tested jumper cable for each end (test the jumpers first). Connect the master CT468 to one of the lines in the closet and turn it on. I recommend the “on setting” to save time (the S is for slow). Then go room to room with the CT468 remote and plug the remote in (if testing jacks plug in the known good jumper cable). It should light up in a couple of seconds if that line in the closet goes to that room. Once you get lights on the remote you have identified which room corresponds with the cable the CT468 master is connected with in the closet. Let the lights cycle at least two times to check for continuity on all pairs in that cable. If one or more of the lights do not light up or they do not light up in order (1 then 2 then 3 then 4 then 5 then 6 then 7 then 8) then you have a problem in that cable. Note G is only for Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) cables, which are rarely used in a home environment. You will need to repeat this process for each cable in the closet and each room. Don’t forget to label each end. Good luck and God bless. V/R Steve |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you use this for non pass through connectors |
Answer: | Yes. Works fine for non pass through connectors. |
Question: | Do you have to use the Klein pass thru connectors or will these work with any pass thru RJ45 connector |
Answer: | Good question! Some buyer have tried the C5 and C6 non-pass thru Mod Plugs, but now are using Klein's Pass-Thru™ connectors. If cost is issue, the Klein Pass-Thru™ Clear Mod Plug, now comes in a 200 Pack - VDV826-763. Hope this helps. We have all Klein Pass-Thru™ Mod Plugs - C5, C6, and 3PC Clear Modular Data Plug are stock. |
Question: | Will these crimpers work with other vendors ez connectors / pass through rj45 connectors. example (platinum tools ez-rj45 cat6 connectors |
Answer: | My personal experience - I bought these connectors: https://amzn.to/2FWDmpL "RJ45 CAT6 Passthrough Connectors (50 PCS),Gold Plated 3 Micron 3u, High Performance 3 Prong Pins (CAT6/50 PCS)" - they seem to work ok. However, although the cable works fine my tester says it has a short. Not sure if it has to do with the connectors, the cable (cat5), or the tester being finicky. But the cable does work. |
Question: | What's the key difference between the $20 (226-107) crimper and the $45 (226-110) crimper |
Answer: | To me it looks like the 107 doesn't do the pass through connectors. It is smaller in size that the 110 model it might fit your pocket better than the 110. But since I only use the pass through connectors the 107 wouldn't work for me. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will plugging this into a POE switch kill this tester |
Answer: | I don’t know if it will “kill” it. But I wouldn’t recommend it. Not sure why you would do that. It’s only meant to test open cables. |
Question: | Does the unit come with a dongle to test ethernet cables from a single point |
Answer: | You have to hook up the test remote that stores securely in tester body to the opposite end of the Cat 5 cable and then test the cable with the tester body. If you don't hook up the test remote at the opposite end of the cable the tester body cannot check the cable. The slang name for the test remote that stores securely in tester body is a "Whistle". |
Question: | How does this compare to the klein lan scout jr. network tester (vdv526-052)? this is half the price but looks to have more features |
Answer: | The Lan Explorer Data Cable tester is a little more than an ohm meter. The Scout maps the cable giving you true cable alignment as per, "it ohmed out." But, neither are the $10K Lan Meter from Fluke. Do you want to pay double for 3 times the information. I do not own either tool but will be purchasing the Scout soon. (Owner of defunct ABK FiberOptics, my work force grew up and move away. Installed over 1,000 connections for my employer on one network with no errors.} |
Question: | Does it test for reverse or split pairs, if not, does it show up as pass or miswire |
Answer: | Here is what the manual says... FAULT INDICATORS 8 MISWIRE: Illuminates if the cable is not wired to one of the cabling standards shown below, or if the conductor wire order on the near end do not match the conductor wire order on the opposite end, i.e. if Pin 1 on near end is wired to Pin 2 on the far end. OPEN: Illuminates if one or more of the conductor wires on the near end are not terminated properly on the far end, or if any of the near-end contact pins are not properly terminated. SHORT : Illuminates when two or more conductor wires make contact with each other. SHIELDED INDICATOR 4 Illuminates when a shielded (ground wire or foil) data cable is properly connected at both ends, either by ground wire or by foil. NOTE: • When “OPEN” and “MISWIRE” exist simultaneously, only can be judged as “OPEN”. • When “SHORT” and “MISWIRE” exist simultaneously, only can be judged as“SHORT” • When “OPEN” and “SHORT” exist simultaneously for one wire, only can display one status. If “OPEN” first then “SHORT”, judge as “OPEN”; If “SHORT” first then “OPEN”, judge as “SHORT”. • If only one fault (“OPEN” or “SHORT”) happens to one wire. For example, wire#1 is open, wire#4 and wire#5 are shorted, then both “OPEN” and “SHORT” can be detected and displayed. NOTE: A Cross-Over Wired cable will flash the MISWIRE and PASS LEDs simultaneously. On an RJ12-terminated wire with pin 1 and 6 open faults, "RJ11 PASS" will be the response. |

Question: | Do you need to get the probe to do toning |
Answer: | The probe is very helpful and I highly recommend that you get one in order to quickly locate cables, and prevent plugging your Trendnet into a cable that is under electrical load. But in the strictest sense of the word it is possible to tone without one. It doesn't even have to be Trendnet probe, but there is so much to be gained by using a probe, I hope you will consider my suggestion. |
Question: | Is this product made in the USA |
Answer: | Taiwan |
Question: | Will this work for testing an ethernet cable where one end is the in-wall jack and the other end is a RJ-45 connector |
Answer: | If you look closely at the pictures (or pictures of other testers that include multiple views) you'll see that the two units have female RJ45/RJ1X ports.So:-- If you're testing a single cable, you just plug each end of the cable into each unit.-- If you want to test, as you're asking, a cable with an RJ45 on one end and a wall jack on the other, you'll need a small patch cable to connect the wall jack to one of the units.-- If you want to test from wall jack to wall jack you'll need *two* short patch cables. If you look at the reviews/customer images for this unit, you'll see a (single) small patch cable *is* included. You can also just search Amazon for "6 inch ethernet patch cable" and you'll get a crap-ton of results to choose from. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this unit speed test a cable? 100mbs? 1000mbs |
Answer: | Hi,network cable tester AT278 can not speed test a cable on 100mbs or 1000mbs. |
Question: | Does this test for cable signal? like 100 or 1000 mbit |
Answer: | I think so, but I'm not 100% on that. I use mine mostly to check for fault types, and distance from end to fault location. You should read the spec and data sheets to see if that is listed. |
Question: | Will this work with tracing cables that are in a POE switch without burning out the tester |
Answer: | Manual does not recommend using this with POE |
Question: | Does this measure distance to short or open |
Answer: | Yes, it can measure distance to short and open. |
Product description
Features:
Following are abnormal connections:
If one cable, for example cable NO.3 is open circuited, the two NO.3 lights of the main tester and remote tester will not turn on.
If several cables are not connected, several lights will not turn on respectively. If less than two cables are connected, none of the lights is on.
If two ends of a cable is disordered, for example NO. 2and NO. 4, then displays on:
Main tester: 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-G
Remote tester: 1-4-3-2-5-6-7-8-G
If two cables are short circuited, neither of the corresponding lights is on of the remote tester while main tester remains unchanged. If three cables, including three, are short circuited, none of the corresponding lights is on.
If test patch panels or wall plate outlles, two cables which can match each other (RJ45) will be connected to the tester.
If test cables of the same axes, BNC turns on when the cable works.
9V reduplicated battery is used in this tester. Battery is advised to change if any weak light appears.( Battery is not included.)

User questions & answers
Question: | does it comes with a case/pouch |
Answer: | It is SUPPOSED to. The first one sent to me was used, broken, no instructions and no pouch. It was returned and I got a new one that had a small zippered pouch. |
Question: | Is there a maximum length of cable this will work on |
Answer: | I’ve tested with 200ft+ cable runs and it works great. Frankly it’s the quality/version of cable run and environmental factors that matter more than the test tool. If the tool can’t get its signal to the test point, neither will your gear. They’re bound by the same constraints. |
Question: | Does this work with cat 6 cable? i purchased one and i can't get it to light all 8 for cat 6, even when i visually verify that the pin-out is correct |
Answer: | Yes, it does work with Cat 6 cable. I checked over 30 runs from our patch panel to outlets in our office, some over 300 feet away, and it works perfectly. If you take a one or two foot patch cable, you should get all 8 wires to light the LED's in sequence. |
Question: | does this test each line individually & sequentially? I have rj45 preinstalled in wall, i am trying to determine if there are crossed or open lines |
Answer: | It steps through each wire and tests each one. If any of them don't work you'll see the light not light up. For example: It lights up 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8 in order.... If 5 is open you'll see it skip 5 and go to 6. When I mis-crimped some wires it caught this and I re did them. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this test the shield on shielded cable |
Answer: | Yes, it tests shielded cable. My project include testing both types of cables. |
Question: | Is this a good product are they reliable |
Answer: | This product is phenomenal. One of the best features of this product is that it will communicate over any two conductors whether the cable has been wired properly or not. It will find the remote identify the remote and then diagnose the pin out of both connectors |
Question: | The device has an unexplained display mode where it shows all pairs connected, but it flashes multiple pairs on the display. What is the meaning |
Answer: | I think it is crosstalk(bleedover) on a short cable. I havn't noticed it on 4 ft or longer cables. |
Question: | What types of network cable tests are supported |
Answer: | I have personally tested cat5, cat5e, Cat6, and cat7. I would have to imagine it works with anything 8pin w/ rj45 end. |
