My neighbor also has an iron filter on his softner to help with stains and corrosion. I just flushed mine minutes ago to give a good review. With my experience in cathodic protection I wouldn't install one in a water heater over a year or two old. Hint - when installing the anode rod, use a SMALL amount of non-teflon pipe thread compound (such as Rectorseal #5) on the male pipe threads. Teflon tape may prevent good electrical contact and will leak.
