13 best dial calipers

Dial calipers are precision measuring instruments used in various industrial and scientific applications to measure the dimensions of an object with high accuracy. They are a type of caliper, which is a device used to measure the distance between two opposite sides of an object.

Dial calipers typically consist of a main scale, a sliding jaw, a dial, and a rack and pinion mechanism. The main scale is fixed, while the sliding jaw can move along it to measure the length, width, or diameter of an object. The rack and pinion mechanism facilitates smooth and precise movement of the sliding jaw.

The dial, usually located on the face of the instrument, is used to provide a direct reading of the measurement. The dial displays the measurement in increments, usually in millimeters or inches, allowing for precise and easy reading of the measurement.

Digital calipers, on the other hand, provide a digital readout of the measured dimensions. They function similarly to dial calipers but have an electronic display that shows the measurement. This digital display eliminates the need for manual reading and helps reduce the chance of reading errors.

Calipers, including dial and digital calipers, are critical tools in manufacturing, engineering, construction, and various scientific fields where accurate measurements of dimensions are essential. They are used to measure the dimensions of objects such as length, width, depth, and diameter with high precision. These measurements are crucial for ensuring the quality and accuracy of products and components.

In summary, dial calipers and digital calipers are important tools for dimensional measurement in industrial, scientific, and engineering settings, providing precise and accurate measurements for a wide range of applications.

User questions & answers

Question: does your caliper say "shock proof" in the dial? I just got mine, and and it does not say shock proof anywhere on it
Answer: I bought the caliper when we were at our home in Tampa FL and left it there so I can't look at the dial, but I do not remember it saying shockproof.I am satisfied with the operation and accuracy of the instrument. Do you mean electrically shockproof? It is metal and surely if exposed to a wire with voltage on it you could be shocked. If you are worried about the utility of the tool in a rough physical environment I would say it is fairly shockproof that way. Does the product description say it is "shockproof". And even if so it would not necessarily have to have that written or stamped on the instrument.
Question: Country of Manufacture? Think Amazon would get the clue to put this info on the product description
Answer: Really? That isn't even necessary any more. There is very little doubt that it's made "in Asia" (the actual country being both immaterial and ambiguous) just like everything else in your life is made "in Asia" because people in North America and Europe are too greedy to work for small paychecks. Even those very rare things that are final-assembled in North America are built entirely of parts made somewhere in Asia, from Asian raw materials..
Question: is anyone able to shed some light on what this tool's resolution might be? nothing is listed on this page by the manufacturer
Answer: The scale is in 0.001 inches or 0.02 mm, so you should be able to read anything to the nearest thousandth of an inch or 2 hundredth of a millimeter.
Question: Are these accurate and durable? How's the quality of construction
Answer: An excellent buy for the money and well built. And yes they are accurate. Like any precision tool, they need to be handled carefully and kept clean. I've had mine for several months and having 40 plus years experience in machine shop, would recommend them. Are they as precision as a high end Mitotoyo? Probably not, but they don't cost $200 plus. So and excellent buy for the money.

Question: Should the caliper come pointing at 0? If not, how do i calibrate
Answer: Set it to 0 before measurement
Question: Is this coolant resistant
Answer: I can't imagine that it would NOT be resistant to any automotive coolant. It might not hurt to rinse it off with plain water, if you expose it to one of the typical coolants. Doesn't that stuff get a little gummy when it dries?
Question: is this metric or SAE scale
Answer: Sae in 100th graduations
Question: what is the diameter of the dial
Answer: The dial outside diameter is about 1.5 inches.

User questions & answers

Question: can i use this to measure screws? i mixed up a bunch of screws in a bag and have no idea what size is which
Answer: Yes, you can use this device to measure screws. You can check both the diameter of a screw and its length. You should know that some U.S. diameters are not given in ordinary length units. For example, sizes 6, 8 and 10. In order to classify the unknown screws, you could just get some known screws, measure them and write down the diameter of each of the known diameters, then compare the unknown ones with the figures you wrote down. On the other hand, length of screws in the U.S. always seem to be measured in inches, so you can set the caliper to read out in inches. You will have to translate, for example, 1.500 inches to 1-1/2 inches. However, the decimal numbers are seldom exactly what you expect. You have to assume that the numbers might vary by up to about 1/64 inch (about 0.016 inch).
Question: are these tips hardened? Thanks
Answer: Yes, the tips are hardened so they don't flex and dull out.
Question: What kind of batteries do these calipers use
Answer: Copy and paste this - 50 357 Alkaline Watch Batteries LR44 AG13 SR44W Battery - for a lot of 50 battery cells that work for this Caliper.
Question: Does this item come pre-calibrated? Will you be able to provide document on the calibration
Answer: You cannot trace the calibration back to the NIST. If you crave calibration, then calibrate it yourself against a calibrated set of gages. You can't buy calibration for this price range.

User questions & answers

Question: near the mm/inch button there is another compartment that opens, anybody knows what it is for
Answer: Other than the battery, the other compartment is for an RS-232 interface. This interface is for programming &/or data acquisition, proprietary interfaces that only the manufacturer have.
Question: could I use this to measure nut size so as to get the right socket
Answer: Yes, you can. Measure the diameter of the nut from one flat side to the opposite flat side. That will be the size of the nut.
Question: What is the measurement range? I need to know the very smallest inside diameter it can measure as well as the largest
Answer: The smallest inside will depend how deep you go, but close to surface I would say 1mm or even less. It goes up to 150mm.
Question: What is the smallest inside measurement it can make
Answer: Approximately .5MM but not deep. To go to depth of jaws about 6MM. Hope it helps.

User questions & answers

Question: Does the thumb friction wheel rotates freely once the jaws are closed at the require force
Answer: no they do not. they are not like micrometers which do have a ratchet or some sort of friction thimble that wont let you tighten them any more. calipers are not as precise as a micrometer because of this.
Question: This is the second one I have purchased. Both of them when I install the supplied battery the display just blinks/ flashes
Answer: Good afternoon,I apologize for the trouble. Please try using something dull and skinny such as a paperclip to try pushing the origin button. The origin button is very hard to press because it is not meant to be pressed on a regular basis. Our authorized Mitutoyo repair technicians use a dull rounded tip pick to press origin buttons. Also, the origin button sometimes needs to be pressed for up to 5 seconds. I reccomend that you try holding it for at least 10 seconds just to ensure you've held it long enough. Please let me know if this suggestions do not help and I will be happy to help you further!Thank you very much for your time and have a nice evening! Sincerely,WillMSI-Viking Gage
Question: Who needs a calibration certificate? I am DIY woodworker to use with a lathe etc, so would the non calibrated one work for me
Answer: It's generally something pertinent only to professional use of the item, and even then usually only under truly precision operations (if measuring to the resolution of a hundredth of an inch is sufficient for you, a calibration certificate would be overkill IMO); There's no substantive difference between a calibrated and non-calibrated caliper. However, some employers will require that their employees utilize measuring tools certified for use according to ISO/IEC standards; Basically, it helps to minimize (though doesn't fully prevent) human error and inconsistencies across measuring devices. Even if it doesn't create a pragmatic concern with regards to tolerances involved in building a given object, if two people using two identical calipers get different measurements from each of their own calipers then it can cause confusion and wasted time/money isolating what the "truth" is, and if those individuals are plugged into the overall production chain in a way where their measurements will be utilized by others then it can manifest in a ripple-effect that multiplies the severity of the discrepancy by the time the unit is nearing the end of the production line. DIYers generally shouldn't concern themselves with getting a calibration-certified unit they're DIYing themselves a space shuttle to withstand re-entry into the atmosphere. Or unless they just want to rest easy that their caliper is objectively precise to a ridiculous degree; If you want to be sure that the measurement you take of any given item is the same measurement that, say, a CIA machinist and engineer may derive when measuring the same item in their shop.
Question: is this caliper made in japan or some imported chinese junk from china
Answer: What is the current (February 2019) status on where the Amazon-sold Mitutoyo 500-196-30 Advanced ONsite Sensor, absolute scale Digital Caliper is made? Is it Japan or China?

Both using the " symbol abbreviation for inches. I JUST ordered one of these and certainly hope it is not metric when it arrives. js
Question: Is this American Made
Answer: It says on their website that the only calipers made by Starrett are the 120 series. Everybody says it's disappointing, but why do you think they are so cheap? The 120's are like $200

User questions & answers

Question: where is this caloper made
Answer: We have it manufactured in China, but we ourselves are in the U.S. ~EAGems
Question: How long does the battery typically last when used only a couple times a month? Also what size/type battery does it use
Answer: The one I've used personally for the last year still has the same first battery in it. I use it perhaps 2-3 times per week. It uses a 3V #2032 battery, and comes with one in the caliper plus has an additional one in the case. Hope that helps. ~EAGems
Question: does this come with documentation for the calibration
Answer: The ONLY under $50 to $100 calipers I have seen with a factory signed calibration check list are the Igaging Absolute Origin calipers. Not sure that even that would satisfy a metrology lab as even a Xerox subsidiary manufacturing facility I worked for, with it's own fully equipped inspection and metrology lab had a independent audit done by an outside NIST certified lab on a yearly basis to check it's reference standards and testing equipment. All new items requiring calibration from torque wrenches through micrometers and calipers were logged in and calibration checked before issuing to manufacturing too.
Question: How do you open the battery compartment to replace the battery
Answer: Hi there, the battery case is actually easy to open. Follow these steps:1. Hold the unit vertically with the back of the caliper facing you. You should see the Metr. -ISO chart, NOT the digital display side!2. There are two tiny screws, you ONLY need to remove the left hand side screw using the included screwdriver. No need to loosen the screen located above the slide wheel!3. Make sure you holding the unit by the case cover for the battery, once you loosen the screw it will easily come and and reveal the battery.Hope this helps!

Changing the Battery from the Back is a Simple Task

To change the battery, just turn the caliper over so the LCD Display is facing down and the slider clamp screw is facing toward you (down), with the thumb roller up. Using the provided screwdriver, remove the screw on the same side as the slider clamp screw, using caution not to lose it since it is so small. Once the screw is removed, the battery cover on the opposite side will be loose and the battery will easily come out. Insert new battery with plus (+) side facing up. Replace cover, and while holding it in place, reinsert the screw and tighten. That’s it. Properly dispose of used battery.

Owner's Manual is Also Available as a .PDF

User questions & answers

Question: They used to say swiss made on the face. they don't anymore. are they
Answer: I didnt realize that they stopped putting Swiss made on them, The pair I purchased in 2014 were made in Switzerland. I cant say with any certainty where they are made now, I hope they havent gone to china, but if you are unsure just but a pair of Mitutoyo , they are made in Brazil but are excellent quality. Hope this answer helped .
Question: does it come with a case
Answer: Yes, it comes in a hard-foam-filled plastic case.
Question: What is the dial cover made of - glass, or plastic? Does it scratch easily
Answer: I was a Machinist for over 20 years and owned a pair of B&S 6" dial calipers. With the "rough" work environment of a machine shop, the face of the calipers never got a scratch on it. I used them every day of the 20+ years as a Machinist. I recommend B&S calipers over Starrett calipers any day and I love Starret precision measuring instruments. Buy them without a care.
Question: is it really made in Switzerland
Answer: Mine was stamped on stem. swiss made. All i can say is this is very precise with consistent readings. I would never change this analog for a digital one. Mine has black dial. Hope this helps. Ted S
