12 best patient alarms
Patient alarms, often associated with occupational health safety products and industrial scientific applications, are devices used in healthcare settings to monitor and ensure the safety and well-being of patients. Here's what you need to know about patient alarms:
Purpose: Patient alarms are designed to alert healthcare providers or caregivers to specific conditions or events related to a patient's health. They play a crucial role in patient safety and care management.
Types of Alarms: There are various types of patient alarms, each serving a specific purpose. Some common types include fall alarms, bed exit alarms, pressure ulcer alarms, and vital sign alarms. These alarms are tailored to address different patient needs and safety concerns.
Fall Alarms: Fall alarms are used to alert caregivers when a patient attempts to leave a bed or chair without assistance. They help prevent falls and injuries, particularly in elderly or mobility-impaired patients.
Bed Exit Alarms: Bed exit alarms are a subset of fall alarms designed to trigger an alert when a patient attempts to exit their bed. They are commonly used in hospitals, nursing homes, and long-term care facilities.
Pressure Ulcer Alarms: Pressure ulcer alarms are used to monitor and prevent the development of pressure ulcers (bedsores) in patients who may be at risk due to immobility. These alarms remind caregivers to reposition the patient to relieve pressure on vulnerable areas of the body.
Vital Sign Alarms: In clinical settings, vital sign alarms are used to monitor a patient's vital signs, such as heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation. They trigger alerts when vital signs fall outside of preset safe ranges.
Alarm Systems: Patient alarms are often part of a larger alarm system that includes sensors, alarms, and a central monitoring station. The sensors are placed on or near the patient, and when a predefined condition is met (e.g., patient falls), an alarm is activated.
Wireless Technology: Many modern patient alarms utilize wireless technology for increased mobility and ease of use. Caregivers can receive alerts on portable receivers or mobile devices, allowing for quick response.
Customizable Settings: Patient alarms often come with customizable settings, allowing healthcare providers to tailor the alarm parameters to the specific needs of each patient.
Patient Dignity: While patient alarms are essential for safety, they must be used with consideration for patient dignity and privacy. Healthcare providers should balance the need for monitoring with the patient's comfort and autonomy.
In summary, patient alarms are vital components of patient safety in healthcare settings. They help prevent falls, monitor vital signs, and address specific patient needs, contributing to improved patient outcomes and quality of care. These alarms are essential occupational health safety products in the healthcare industry.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this product fit for person that under 120 lbs |
Answer: | When the mattress the pad is being used upon is a firm, innerspring mattress, this item will likely still work fine for someone under 120 pounds. However, if the mattress is not firm, or has anything "non-standard" about it, such as it is a TempurPedic, memory foam, or air mattress, or if there is some type of padding that has been added to the bed, this 10" x 30" sensor pad may not properly register the body at all times. This can cause false alarms, or majorly delayed alerts. You may want to consider a system with a 20" x 30" sensor pad instead, which is more effective under those scenarios, and can be purchased here: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KYA53BW |
Question: | does this have an on/off switch? is there an AC adaptor? how long do batteries last |
Answer: | Rob- it did have on/off. Not sure on the AC Adapter... Batteries lasted a few weeks minimum. I don't remember there being any issue with them at all.Was happy with the product. Good luck. |
Question: | Does this make a sound when the patient gets in the bed |
Answer: | No only when they get out. When I put my mom to bed I always press on it just to make sure it will sound when she gets up. |
Question: | The "C" batteries power the receiving alarm unit? What powers the transmitter in the pad |
Answer: | The transmitter inside the pad is powered by a non-replaceable lithium battery. The battery has been engineered to last the duration of the pad's life term, which is one year. Replacement pads are available separately from this system. Note that this system should always come with a one year warrantied sensor pad, not 45 or 90 days. If you ever receive anything but a one year pad, you should immediately contact Amazon and ask to return the item, as that means the seller you bought the system from is not offering the correct product. We do not recommend re-purchasing from the same seller, as you are likely to again receive the same incorrect product. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How much weight has to be applied before the alarm goes off |
Answer: | Not much pressure is required to set off the alarm but it does seem to be "delayed" by about five to ten seconds. If your "patient" moves fairly quickly they may be already out the door before you can get to them. I also found after using this mat a couple of weeks that the alarm did not always sound. I don't know if the mat was defective or the wireless signal was faulty. I had to stop using the mat and switch to a wireless motion sensor. |
Question: | I know you can turn the monitor off. Do you turn off the mat when not in use |
Answer: | We do not turn off the mat. It is hard to get to, as it is in a pocket at the edge of the mat. You may be able to, but I would fear of forgetting to turn it on, and rendering it useless if you need it. The receiving unit we turn the alarm off. The adapter is well worth it for the receiving unit. |
Question: | How do you program a second mat? The instructions are for a different product |
Answer: | I only had one mat but i think if you call the seller Liberty Health Supply 1-800-991-6207 they can possibly help you. |
Question: | Will Mom's big fat cat trigger the alarm |
Answer: | I do not think so. It takes quite a bit more weight for the alarm to sound. |

Product description
Bed alarms and sensor pads are the best method of getting an early alert that your patient is trying to get out of bed. Place the pad under your patient's back or buttock area (beneath the fitted sheet). The pad has a cord which runs along the side of the mattress. When the patient starts to sit up, taking their weight off the pad, the pad sends a signal to the bed alarm monitor and the monitor will start to alarm and let you know they need assistance. By having an alarm in the room with the patient, you will not only hear the alert from an adjacent room, but the patient may slow down and wait for you once they hear the alarm sound, giving you valuable time to come to their aid. Manufactured by Smart Caregiver.
- Bed alarm and pad offer an efficient method to be alerted when your patient exits their bed. Long term pad will last one full year. Shorter term pads lasting 45 and 90 days also available - contact seller.
- Features a prominently placed reset button to silence the alert, a low battery indicator, a pad lost alert if the pad is disconnected, and volume adjustment. 1 year manufacturer warranty.
- 10" x 30" pad is made of a soft, latex-free vinyl, with foam interior, and is sealed for incontinence protection.
- To operate, simply place pad under your patient's back or buttock area underneath the fitted sheet. Alarm will sound as patient sits up.
- Requires one 9 v battery, or purchase optional AC adapter model AC-02 (9 volt).

Answer: | It should work fine my mother used to set it off by putting her hand on it then taking it off, thus setting it off. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work for a 15,000 pound aircraft or does it have a max weight |
Answer: | The sensors are on a thin plastic film- An aircraft is too heavy |
Question: | do you have to change the battery every 14 days |
Answer: | I delivered the kit to my mother's rest home and they used it for several months. She doesn't try to get out of bed on her own anymore so they discontinued using it. I'm not sure how often they should change the batteries but I'm sure they used the unit for several months and did not change the batteries at all. |
Question: | the patients in only about 100 pounds, will it sense her when she gets up |
Answer: | Yes, definitely. It worked when my 45 pound six year old tried it out for us. |
Question: | Does this item have an adapter to plug directly into an electrical outlet |
Answer: | It's been 2 years since we used this, but I believe that it runs on batteries. The cord is to attach the pad to the alarm box, which I always put at the foot of the bed away from the pad. It worked best for us to be under the fitted sheet or under a waterproof pad in his chair. We have a large house, and we could hear the alarm from any room. It was very helpful in keeping my father-in-law safe. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Could i add an dditional chair alarm to this system? My dad has 2 chairs that he mainly uses during the day |
Answer: | You may add up to six products to the cordless alarm that you currently have which is the 433-EC. |
Question: | Is this made by Smart Caregiver |
Answer: | Ye, it is made by smart caregiver |
Question: | Do you recommend this product for a king sized bed |
Answer: | The pad size is not depending on the bed size. The 10x30 is recommended for anyone 120lbs and above. The 20x30 is recommended for anyone below 120lbs. It will work fine with a king size bed. Please the pad horizontally across the bed with the bottom of the bed pad above the person's waistline so when person does get up his or her body will be completely off the bed pad alerting the alarm monitor. This is the best way to get the quickest alert response time. |
Question: | Do you need to reactivate the alarm each time the person gets up? How does the alarm know if the person is on the bed or the chair |
Answer: | No, you do not need to reactivate the alarm. The weight of the person laying on or sitting on the pad keeps it off. When they get up and their weight is gone, the alarm sounds. When they lay on or sit back on it, the alarm goes back off. There is a button to push when the person lays down or sits on the pad. When you get them up, you push it to turn it off while they are away from the pad. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i purchase a second transmitter so I don't have to move it from the bed pad to the chair pad |
Answer: | You use two pads with one transmitter. Contact the provider of the product and they can walk you through it. Works great. |
Question: | Does it come with an alarm ? And how long is the cord |
Answer: | One alarm two pads... One pad for the chair and one pad for the bed. Wish it had two alarms so I didn't have to move it back and forth from room to room. The cords could be a little longer, but then someone might trip over them. The cords are long enough - one can make due. One does not need to reach an electrical socket. It uses one or two (AA or AAA) batteries. The batteries last a long time. For us - it was well worth the money. My husband is in stage 4 parkinson's with dementia and is clinically blind. He has no balance and cannot get up on his own - even though he tries from time to time. The chair / bed alarm has allowed me the freedom to move around the house and not be in the same room with him. The alarm is loud enough that I can hear it throughout the house. I also use a baby monitor - and can take the dog out or go get the mail. It amplifies the beep beep beep - so I can immediately come back in the house - knowing he is trying to get up. Easily wipes off (if necessary) - with a warm cloth. Anything else? |
Question: | CAn pads be purchased separately? If so, what are product numbers |
Answer: | I think it only comes with both pads and the sensors |
Question: | I don’t want my father to be able to hear the alarm, I only want the alarm to come through the receiver that with me. Is that the case with this item |
Answer: | The alarm is next to the chair or bed and is very loud. We mainly used this at night so we when my grandmother tried to get up when we were asleep. It's like in the hospital, they use these for the high fall risk patients so they can get there before they fall. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there any way to turn this thing off? I only wanted to use it at night but can't figure out how to turn it off during the day |
Answer: | But adapter and unplug from base when not in use. |
Question: | How sensitive to movement is this pad? Does it sound the alarm if you roll over in bed, or only if you try to get up |
Answer: | The alarm does NOT sound when just rolling over. I've used this pad for my elderly mother and for my husband. The alarm sounds when there is no pressure, such as completely getting out of the bed. Besides, you can adjust the sensitivity. This has really been a lifesaver for me. Hope this helps. |
Question: | does the monitor have the alarm on it. Can I take the monitor down the hall and hear the alarm on the monitor when my grandma gets up |
Answer: | The pad is connected to the alarm. It has different volume settings and is really loud. I was able to hear it on the other side of the house when my grandma would get up. |
Question: | Do you sell the plug adaptor for this |
Answer: | We tried to order the plug adaptor. No one had it. If you partially pull out battery in morning, this will save the battery. In the beginning we had to change batteries daily. This product works great. We can hear it down the hall from my moms bedroom. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Could this be used as a bed monitor |
Answer: | No, there is a cord from the Pad to the alarm. It is not wireless. |
Question: | Will it survive incontinence |
Answer: | the 2016P will work with the TL-2016 monitor but the one you have in the picture is not the correct one |
Question: | Whats the minimum weight requirements |
Answer: | I no longer have the device since my mom passed away so I do not know the exact length of the cord. I could hear the alarm going off when my mother's bedroom door was closed and mine was as well. Our rooms had one room between us. I ended up using a baby monitor to amplify the sound for when I was asleep. I hope this was helpful. |
Question: | Why does the pad only have a 14 day warranty? Does it not last any longer than 14 days |
Answer: | It is a wired system so the caretaker needs to be within earshot of the monitor. |
