User questions & answers

Question: What is the max extension of the c-4? Looks like it extends only 3". Am i reading this right
Answer: Yes. The extension is 3". I used these to level our mobile home....saved me HUNDREDS of dollars and I got it done correctly. This jack supports 18000 pounds. As an engineer, I appreciate how this jack is made and how WELL it is made
Question: What is the manufacturer's maximum recommended working load for one jack
Answer: Max-18,000 lbs- more info at website www.akronproducts.com. Hope this helps
Question: how far do these expand
Answer: On the akron website and on the c-4 adjustable floor jack box itself it says the range is lowest 12" to 15" highest. I see comments that say it has a 6" range but that would not be correct for this jack and if installed to that extension would probably not be safe. That said akron does sell a large variety of adjustable floor jacks with a range of extensions. I bought this one because I had a space of about 13" that needed to go up only slightly to level out the floor.
Question: How does one "jack them up?" Can I extend these until they touch the beams under my fifth wheel and then jack them up to hold my slid out up
Answer: Yes, you turn the collar on the top of the shaft-it is threaded-to raise or lower the top plate.

User questions & answers

Question: How are these used? I used a set years ago, but the top had a "nut" set to turn with a crescent wrench until tight, this appears round at top
Answer: That looks different from mine which did have a nut to turn. May want to call the company?
Question: Would 2 be sufficient to support multiple joists with 2 - 8ft long 2x8's or would 3 be better
Answer: Much of that depends on the load your going to be putting on the 2bys. I would do a minimum of 3. You should be able to tell if you need more by looking at any deflection in the 2bys if there is some you’ll need more. Are yoU using this as extra supports for joists?
Question: can these be used in pairs with a beam to support 3 or 4 joists at a time
Answer: Absolutely. I have had engineers approve using these jacks to support beams over 12 feet long. You may have to reinforce your floor or use a 4x8x12 solid cement block to spread the weight load of the post.
Question: Can the tube be sawn shorter to reduce overall height
Answer: As the pars are not welded together I don't see why not. Don't remember how long the screw part is but you can cut it short enough so the crew still fits the length when fully retracted. One thing to remember is that the cut must be flat enough so that the load on it is perpendicular or, I would think, the possibility of a rollover is possible especially since the base, the tube and top are not welded together.

User questions & answers

Question: I want to support a 4,000 (empty) safe that will be above the basement. wonder if i need 4 of them and if i should put a 3/8" plate below the floor
Answer: It depends on the floor support system. If you have a load-bearing beam. Put one where the beam terminates at the wall and another under the safe - on the beam. I have two in the garage under a hot tub that is on an upstairs deck.
Question: Can this be used as a support post to replace an old wooden one in my basement
Answer: It was used to replace a wooden support post in a basement. It has been up for a few years now with no problems. Worth the money
Question: What is the diameter of the screw turning rod hole
Answer: The hole is 7/16" on mine, but there is a burr around the edges that might be troublesome for a rod of that diameter. The rod they supply (which is very short), fits perfectly though and it's exactly 3/8".
Question: What is the diameter of the pipe bolt holes
Answer: I'm not 100% sure of the actual size but I drilled a 1/2" hole in my concrete floor thru this hole and there was still room for a larger size if needed.

User questions & answers

Question: Where is this [product made? the shorter ones from akron are suppose to be made in usa
Answer: I still have the box and it is unclear because it says it is made for the Akron company, but when I download the catalog it states that they are America's leading manufacturer of adjustable columns. The website which has a lot of information about their product is: akronproducts.com
Question: Are top and bottom plates available as separate items? I have mislaid mine, but still have the jack
Answer: I do not know if they are available as replacements. However any welding or machine shop could make them by welding a short piece of pipe of the correct diameter to fit inside the column onto a square plate of 1/8 or 3/16 steel. This should not be expensive. I think I could make a pair in 30 or 40 minutes. Paul Spencer
Question: I want to raise my bed enough to put risers under it. Is this jack appropriate for this application
Answer: Don't think I would use this for that.
Question: can i use this as an expander for patio chairs sling
Answer: It is a semi-permanent jack. I don't understand how you would use it with patio chairs.

User questions & answers

Question: I want to use this to hold up my crank out on my RV for my bedroom will this fit
Answer: The specifications give you an adjustable range of 4'5" to 7'9", but if you need to go less than 4'5" you can cut the pipe down. I would cut the pipe with a pipe cutter rather than a hacksaw as you need a good square cut so that the pipe will rest on the base plate and stand straight. If you need to go longer use wooden blocks under the base plate. Grease the threads on the jack. I cut the smaller pipe right down and fit the threaded jack and small pipe to fit in a 12 inch space to jack a house sill up. So you see it is pretty open to modification. Regards, Jeff
Question: what are the sizes of the holes in the top and bottom plates? Trying to figure out what screws would be needed to fasten them. Thank you
Answer: I was working with wood framing and the jacks were only used for upward support so did not need to use any screws for the plates. The plates have a short raised center that fits inside the pipes. There are 4 1/4 inch holes at each corner of the plates. All the plates are the same size and will work top or bottom.
Question: Can you actually adjust this pole to 7 feet 9 inches
Answer: No
Question: How high is this? I need it to lift something about 6 inches off the floor. Will this slide under that
Answer: This product has an adjustable length range of 53" - 93" . It is intended to support , not actually lift . To lift you need a FLOOR JACK which generally requires 3 1/2 - 4" of clearance to get under something (beam? ) to do the lifting. Once the correct height is established an adjustable FLOOR POST or Mini LALLY column will hold the (beam?) in position at the desired height. the shortest floor posts usually adjust from about 12 to 16 inches and if you want a lower clearance you're going to have to get some pressure treated 4X4 or 6 X 6 posts and cut to size for the support piece. A specialty building supply retailer may be willing to cut a lally column to size for you ( a lally column is usually 8'-10') and provide several pieces to size. I'm not sure exactly what you want to do and how knowledgeable you are about building and construction so I'll leave it at that .

User questions & answers

Question: what is the type of material used and the size and weight
Answer: Metsl
Question: Is there a locking feature on this jack to prevent it from creeping out of adjustment
Answer: No. Stay away from the end of the lift stroke also. the adjustment bar is cheap and will bend. Otherwise this does the job and has not moved once I adjusted.
Question: how much will this lift
Answer: Well, the supplied rod used to turn the jack will bend. I bought some grade 8 bolts to replace them and used a cheater pipe and bent the bolts too. I don't know how much the house weighed, but the jack didn't fail. The ability to turn the screw limited how much I could lift. Also the lift height of 12-16 inches means the threaded shaft is only 4 or so inches long, so use caution not to screw it all the way out with a load on it.
Question: Do you need to pour concrete footings for underneath the jack
Answer: Not necessarily, BUT these jacks must have a firm foundation or they may press into soft soil and loosen over time. Usually, crawl spaces under structures are damp - assuming your area of the country is not rock or hard ground. You can use precast concrete piers which can be bought at most building material stores or you can used crushed stone with a concrete block cap leveled in a bed of the stones. If you use stone and a concrete block, make sure you dig a bowl-like place to hold the stone and that it is big enough to have about 4 to 6 inches of stone bigger than the concrete pier or block. Level the piers or blocks before putting weight on them. These jacks are not designed to replace permanent house piers but to stiffen floors or help level settled floor joists. I used about 10 jacks to support 4 x 6 treated beams to lift and stiffen an existing floor. The short answer is no, the jacks don't have to have poured footings, but they do have to have footings that can spread the weight evenly. They should not be placed on the ground without some sort of footing. I have used them both ways - with poured footings for the heaviest loads and gravel-block footings for lighter weight areas. Hope this helps.

User questions & answers

Question: Looking to buy a few of these to level a pier and beam home. Do you have any recommendations for footers? Thanks
Answer: These would work. They are a bit flimsy and mine came in with no handle bar. Customer service with this company is really bad.
Question: Could these be used to level a mobile home
Answer: BRIEFLY, while you are working on permanent piers or other supports. They provide a margin of safety while you're under the home working. They won't stand up to prolonged dampness. And they require solid bases below for weight distribution.
Question: Can this be permanent under the house
Answer: I'm leaving my floor Jack's under the house permanently
Question: Need one for 29.25” to raise up slightly to reinforce a Beamer about 31”. Anyone? Thank you
Answer: This one is adjustable from 12 - 16 inches so personally I would look for a taller jack. This would work in a pinch but only if you blocked it up.
