Answer:	These will not survive in a instant pot or a pressure cooker. The plastic is sort of flimsy so I don’t recommend it. I’ve gotten away with cleaning these with some bleach diluted in some water.

LB agar plates should be placed in a refrigerator upon arrival. LB-agar plates stored under such conditions have a minimum shelf life of 3 months.



BRIEF INSTRUCTION:

1) Take out one sterile cotton swab. Gently wipe a test area with the cotton swab to pick up bacteria. Here are some of the popular samples of the test objects: human or pet teeth, hands, phone, TV remote, restaurant menu, sink, floor, fruit, vegetable etc.

2) Take out one of the agar plates (No warm-up is needed). Open the agar plate and gently streak the agar plate with the cotton swab to transfer the bacteria onto the surface of the agar plate.

3) Cover the agar plate and place it in an upside-down position in an incubator with a temperature between 85 and 100 oF. A desk lamp or a portable heater can be used as a heat source.

4) Watch appearance of small bacterial colonies on the surface of the agar plates after 12-48 hr of incubation.

Answer:	The petri dishes come prepared with the agar (the yellowish gel in the picture). I kept them in the refrigerator until ready to use. They will keep in the refrigerator or even at room temperature for several months.

Answer:	Wow, some of these responses. First, yes they will continue to grow bacteria, and can and will contaminate the area they are disposed. Soak them in bleach or alcohol. This will kill the bacteria and then they are safe to discard. Just throwing them away is extremely dangerous. And you shouldn't ever just toss them!

Our science kit plates are about 10cm in diameter, so it is probably a little too small for your daughter to put her entire hand on the prepoured agar plate. What we recommend for this experiment is to either put part of her hand on the plates before and after washing her hands or to use the cotton tipped applicators to swab bacteria off her hands and wipe them on the plates before and after hand washing.
