11 best ac capacitor
An AC capacitor, also known as an alternating current capacitor, is an electrical component widely used in various applications within the industrial and electrical engineering fields. Capacitors, in general, are passive electronic components that store and release electrical energy. AC capacitors specifically are designed to work with alternating current (AC) circuits, as opposed to direct current (DC) circuits. Here is some essential information about AC capacitors:
Capacitor Basics: A capacitor consists of two conductive plates separated by a dielectric material. When voltage is applied to the capacitor, it stores electrical energy in the form of an electric field between the plates.
AC vs. DC: AC capacitors are specifically designed to operate in AC circuits, where the voltage periodically changes direction. This is in contrast to DC capacitors, which work with constant voltage.
Types of AC Capacitors: There are several types of AC capacitors, including film capacitors, ceramic capacitors, electrolytic capacitors, and tantalum capacitors. Each type is suited to specific applications based on its characteristics.
Applications: AC capacitors find extensive use in various applications, including:
- Motor Start and Run: AC motors often use capacitors to help them start and run efficiently.
- Power Factor Correction: AC capacitors are employed to improve the power factor in industrial and commercial electrical systems, increasing efficiency and reducing energy costs.
- Lighting: Capacitors are used in fluorescent and high-intensity discharge (HID) lighting ballasts to regulate and improve the quality of the electrical current.
- Air Conditioning: Capacitors are used in air conditioning systems to start and run the compressor motor.
- Power Electronics: Inverter circuits and power supplies often use capacitors for smoothing and filtering AC voltage.
Capacitance Value: The capacitance value of an AC capacitor is a crucial parameter and is measured in farads (F) or microfarads (μF). The capacitance value determines how much electrical charge the capacitor can store.
Voltage Rating: AC capacitors are rated for a specific voltage. It's essential to select a capacitor with a voltage rating higher than the maximum voltage in the circuit to prevent breakdown.
Temperature Considerations: Operating temperature is important for AC capacitors, as extreme temperatures can affect their performance and lifespan.
Life Expectancy: AC capacitors have a limited lifespan, and their performance may degrade over time. Regular maintenance and replacement may be necessary, especially in critical applications.
Safety Precautions: When working with AC capacitors, it's important to discharge them safely to avoid electrical shocks. Proper safety procedures should always be followed.
In summary, AC capacitors are crucial components in electrical and industrial systems that use alternating current. They store and release electrical energy, perform various functions in electrical circuits, and are available in different types and capacitance values to suit specific applications. Understanding their characteristics and selecting the appropriate AC capacitor is essential for efficient and reliable operation of electrical systems.

A capacitor is an electric component that temporarily stores an electrical charge. A dual "run capacitor" supports two electric motors, such as in large air conditioner or heat pump units, with both a fan motor and a compressor motor. It saves space by combining two physical capacitors into one case. The dual capacitor has three terminals labeled "C", "FAN", and "HERM", which stand for the *C*ommon, Fan, and *HERM*etically sealed compressor.
Dual capacitors come in a variety of sizes, depending on the capacitance (µF or MFD), such as 40 plus 5 µF, and also the voltage. A 440 volt capacitor can be used in place of a 370 volt, as it is build better, but the 370 can’t be used in place of a 440 volt. It will work for a while and will fail prematurely, as exceeding the capacitor's rated voltage will cause the dielectric to break down and the capacitor to short out. Same as an electric wire- 600V rated wire is better than 300V one .The capacitance(µF or MFD) must be the same or stay within 10%+ or 5%- of its original value . Example: 50 µF cap can be substituted by 47.5 to 55 µF with the same or better voltage ratings capacitor .
Round cylinder-shaped dual run capacitors are commonly used for air conditioning, to help in the starting of the compressor and the condenser fan motor.Round capacitor can be used to substitute oval shape one with the same MFD AND Volt specs

User questions & answers
Question: | I have one with the same numbers but tolerance is +3% 50/60HZ. this one being +6% would it work |
Answer: | In my opinion, this is actually better since it can work within 6% variations from 50/60Hz. Just make sure the other specs are correct for your unit and above all, be careful with electricity! Remove the main "switch" outside the unit and discharge the old capacitor of any leftover current it might have. I hope this helps. |
Question: | is this compatible with my ruud mfd dont have markings on it all it has is areovox sh |
Answer: | Sorry, I wouldn't know that. I'm just a homeowner that is a DIYer. I simply matched my failed capacitor with the one Amazon was selling. If you can do that, you'll have more confidence in your selection. |
Question: | Where do I buy the wires to hook it up? I can't splice on the terminals myself |
Answer: | The wires are already on the condenser unit... If you have a separate capacitor for fan don't use that terminal or vice versa |
Question: | All the numbers match on my existing one (440 vac, 50/60 hz, +-6%), except for mine has the number 40uf/5uf instead of 45/5 ... will this one work |
Answer: | A 55 Micro Farad cap will most likely run fine in your unit.. Capacitors work like batteries on start-up of the motor where extra electrical energy assists the unit in overcoming the latency of the motor to start. Capacitors charge at different times depending on capacity. Typically it uses 5 time constants for a capacitor to charge and discharge. All this means that a small cap will charge faster than a large one but means little to the user if they are not using it as some part of a timing circuit. The Booster Supco Cap adds extra energy on startup so the unit gets that extra electrical push. This is a very simplified answer to a somewhat lengthy Study of CAPs in EE courses and how they are used and work. |

SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE MAXRUN 40/5 MFD 370/440 VOLT CAPACITOR
This Capacitor is rated for 440 Volts which means it will work at 370 or 440 VAC. A dual run capacitor, such as this 40/5, combines two capacitors into one unit. It will power a compressor motor and a fan motor, and has three terminals on the top. They are labeled "Herm" for the compressor motor, "Fan" for the fan, and "C" for the common line.
The capacitor is 2" in diameter by 4.375" in height and will run from -40 C. to +70 C. It is safety rated at 10,000 AFC.
Run Capacitors work hand in hand with Electric Motors that power the compressors and condensers that make air conditioning work. For this purpose, the Capacitor works the same way as a battery. It stores and releases a large charge very quickly. This released charge gives the motor the spin it needs to start and run correctly.
As Air Conditioning Capacitors age, they lose their ability to hold a charge and get weaker.
As the capacitor gets older, the motor may get louder and seem to run slower. If replaced before they get weaker, its possible to lengthen the life of the motor. Eventually, the capacitor will get too weak to start the motor and if the motor can't start, it can short out. Timely replacement of the capacitor is essential to Air Conditioning Maintenance.
SAFETY TIPS FOR REPLACEMENT
When replacing a capacitor always be sure to turn off the power to the air conditioning unit and place a screw driver between the terminals of the capacitor to release any stored charge. MaxRun Capacitors are designed to be the correct fit, but it's best to measure the height and width of the capacitor to double check that the replacement unit matches the original. We also recommend keeping a spare so you have one handy when it's needed.

Question: | Isnt 30,000 hrs only ~3.5 years? Shouldnt this work longer than that |
Answer: | Our capacitors are built to EIA-456-A standards, which is for 50,000 hours. But we prefer to advertise 30,00 hours because in real life uncontrollable circumstances, like extreme heat and power surges will cause most of the early product failures. We do offer a one-year unconditional guarantee. |
Question: | Do your capacitors include a bleed resistor |
Answer: | The product description does not indicate there is one. Also it was confirmed with a multimeter no bleed resistor inside the capacitors. |

If your fan is working but compressor not, or the capacitor is bulged on top most likely your capacitor is defective. Round capacitor can be used to substitute oval shape one with the same MFD AND Volt specs.
You will ask “Why I need a Cap that is rated 440V in my A/C?”
Answer: You need to realize that a motor is an inductive device. When the supply voltage is applied to the motor run winding, the voltage across the start winding will be increased to a higher voltage value. A motor acts like a transformer with the run winding acting as the primary and the start winding acting as the secondary. This is why the capacitor has a much higher voltage rating than the 230 being the supply voltage.

Question: | Mine says 7.5/60u f 440V-50/60Hz. Is this the same as the reverse |
Answer: | Some of the manufacturers list the capacitance of the capacitor in a different order: some list fan motor firs and then compressor( example 7.5/60 ). Other Compressor and then fan motor(example 60/7.5 ). Some list it one under another( example first line: "60 uf" then under on a second line" 7.5 uf") all of them mean the same. As long as you connect the fan wire to "FAN" and compressor wire to "HERM". Thank you |
Question: | tech replaced my original lasting 11 years w/ 55+5uf but died after 1yr. I didn't see my orig so maybe it was higher so i should get this instead |
Answer: | test the electrical unit it works on (fan or compressor motor) they may be drawing too much current) and going bad. that is more than likely the answer hope this helps ron |
Question: | I have a diversitech 7.5/60uf +-5% 440v-50/60hz. will powerwell 60/7.5 uf work as a replacement |
Answer: | Yes. The this is the correct replacement |
Question: | To get 440v does it matter which leads on the capacitor I plug into? My old capacitor only had 2 connections instead of three |
Answer: | you most likely have the wrong capacitor. This is a dual capacitor for a heat pump/condenser. C= comm, F= Fan, H-Herm. Comm connects to the Contactor, usually black or red wire, Fan- condenser fan motor- sometimes purple wire, Herm=COMPRESSOR inside the condenser unit. Usually black/red wire. The wire coding is not universal thus one has to look at wiring schematic which can be found online and or on the back of the access plate of the condenser. Again this is for a dual start/run capacitor Why is it called a dual because it energizes the fan and the compressor of the condenser upon startup. Got a model number of your condenser ( assuming your working on the condenser on a split unit air vs a package unit) |

Same as an electric wire- 600V rated wire is better than 300V one .The capacitance(µF or MFD or micro farad) must be the same or stay within 10%+ or 5%- of its original value . Example: 50 µF cap can be substituted by 48 - 55 MFD with the same or better voltage ratings capacitor.

Question: | My unit says 5/50uf and this one says 50/5uf. Are they the same |
Answer: | Yes you just have to make sure that the 50 uf are connected to the compressor and common and the 5uf is connect to the fan and common. It will say on the capacitor, each terminal will be marked as to which leads go where. |
Question: | My ac has a 50+3uf 370v. this one says 50 +5 uf. can i use this one |
Answer: | I believe it will work |
Question: | My unit has a 45/5 uF will this one work for it |
Answer: | This is for 50/5 capacitor. You can get the 45/5 capacitor here https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01NAZJYWA |
Question: | How does one claim the 5 year guarantee? Mine went bad 45 days after purchase |
Answer: | The bad one I had lasted a little longer than 4 years. It depends on how often you have the A/C on. On the other hand, the cost is minimal. The troublesome is to get your hands dirty. It doesn’t take long to replace. I replaced mine at 10:00PM when it broke while temperature was at in the mid eighties. Thanks to this unit that the whole family was able to sleep well. |

Question: | What are the concrete tips for automatic shutdown |
Answer: | Step 1.) Run around in circles until u get too dizzy to continue or 15 min has passed, then it will auto shut off. 2.) There is no step two. If you have further questions or need more concrete tips, just continue repeating step 1 until it sinks in. |
Question: | W/ backlite on I tilt the meter away from me the display is readable but once I tilt it towards myself the display becomes unreadable, is this normal |
Answer: | Yes, with the baclklight on, it's viewable from straight-on to tilted away from yourself, but with the top tilted towards you it loses all contrast. Side-to-side viewing angle is a good. This is a common trait among some LCD displays. |
Question: | I want to measure current flowing to my car starter when cranking engine. Does this clamp on meter measure DC current when using clamp |
Answer: | Yes, It can read DC starting current with the clamp when set to DC measurement. Reading moves fast but I take video with mobile phone camera and rewind to see the 268A when starting a Nissan Frontier 2.5 L engine. Reasonable current though I cannot check its accuracy yet. I buy meter to monitor DC charging current and confirm non-running car leaking currents under 50mA but need to wait 20 minutes after engine off to let car computer stabilize from initial shutoff which can cab be as high as 0.6A. With this meter, I also find about 10mV leaking voltage on plastic surface between terminals at new battery (due to acid filling spill at manufacturing?) from club store which I need to reduce the Voltage drop to less than 0.1 mV by scribing several grooves on plastics surface around terminal posts. Calibrate to zero by holding Z/F button few seconds before measurement can help read accuracy. I am happy with this meter for the price. Hope you too if do not have time to find a better cheaper on |
Question: | how accurate is th DC current measurment |
Answer: | I have not checked it against a reference, but I have done some measurements on my car with this. It seemed to reflect a reasonable value when the battery charger was on, showing charging current. and It showed a big current for the started that was believable. When you first set it, you can press a zero button to zero it out. Then I looked at a really bad solar panel that could only put out about 50 milliamps when shorted, and it was able to show that pretty well. So the bottom line, if you are going to use this for debugging stuff, it seems pretty good. If you are going to measure calorie input to control a chemical reactions in a pharmaceutical lab, I can't say. For me, it is just cool that it can do a DC current in the first place. Has already come in handy as I was able to determine my alternator was not charging my battery quite easily. |
Product features
To measure Direct Current
Specifications:
If current> 3A, the orange display lights up.
The measuring range of DC current is 60A/600A. Accuracy: ±(2.5%+5).
Note:
Before measuring the DC current, long-press and hold the Z/F key until the ZERO character appears to clear the data.
To measure Alternating Current
Specifications:
If current> 3A, the orange display lights up.
The measuring range of AC current is 60A/600A. Accuracy: ±(2.5%+5).
Note:
To measure the current you need to clamp the meter around one of the wires and not the whole power cord. The power cord contains two wires carrying current and ground wire. The current in two wires always flows in opposite directions, so the magnetic fields from two wires canceling each other, therefore the meter reads 0 A.
Grasp the individual current conductor to be measured and close the current clamp again. The measured conductor must be placed in the center of the clamp, otherwise, additional errors will occur.

User questions & answers
Question: | Mine is 40/5 +-5 will this work being it is a +-6? everything else matches |
Answer: | The +/-6 is the tolerance of the capacitor. They are saying that the MFD value can vary + or - 6%. For example at 6% tolerance the 40MFD side can vary between 37.6 to 42.4 MFD. At + or - 5% tolerance it would yield a tighter range of 38 to 42 MFD. The closer the tolerance the better the part. So in this case 5% is a better part than a 6% part. It should work fine but is of a little less quality. |
Question: | what if capacitor come out of specification |
Answer: | Higher one is ok |
Question: | Is this capacitor eia-456-a rated? Is it marked on lebel or just a rumor |
Answer: | All I know is that they replaced a 40+5. I’ve used 6 or so and they work. |
Question: | c240a does it have two plugs on both sides |
Answer: | For easy connections |
