The ‘6’ is the outside diameter measured in millimeters, and the ‘1’ is the distance between adjacent threads, also in millimeters. Metric threads are used outside of the USA, and commonly in products by HP and other global entities. You can identify an M6 screw by measuring the diameter with a ruler. It’ll be 6 mm, or slightly more than 7/32 inches (0.228″).

Answer:	It is metal or a very dense material, such as carbon fiber. I've fed the handle it's fair share of torque and its held up. Even the fit is still quite snug.
