14 best powder actuated fasteners for concrete
Powder-actuated fasteners for concrete are specialized tools and fasteners used in construction and other industries to securely attach materials to concrete or other masonry surfaces. These fasteners are designed to provide a reliable and efficient method for fastening objects to concrete without the need for traditional drilling and anchoring methods. Here are some key points about powder-actuated fasteners:
Operating Principle: Powder-actuated fasteners operate on the principle of using controlled explosive charges to drive the fastener into concrete or masonry surfaces. These tools combine a firearm-like mechanism with a nail or pin to achieve this.
Components: A typical powder-actuated fastening system consists of the fastener itself (usually a steel pin or nail), a cartridge containing gunpowder, and a powder-actuated tool (also called a powder-actuated nail gun). The tool contains a barrel where the cartridge is placed, and it is triggered to drive the fastener into the concrete.
Applications: Powder-actuated fasteners are used in a wide range of applications, including attaching wood or metal framing to concrete, securing electrical conduit and fixtures, affixing steel plates for structural purposes, and attaching various types of insulation to concrete surfaces.
Safety Precautions: Safety is of paramount importance when using powder-actuated fasteners. Users must be properly trained and wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including safety glasses and hearing protection. Additionally, the tools should be used in accordance with manufacturer instructions to minimize the risk of accidents.
Regulations and Codes: Depending on your location and the specific application, there may be regulations and building codes that govern the use of powder-actuated fasteners. It's essential to adhere to these regulations to ensure the safety and structural integrity of the project.
Variety of Fasteners: Powder-actuated fasteners come in various lengths and styles to accommodate different concrete thicknesses and load requirements. It's crucial to select the right fastener for the specific application to ensure a secure attachment.
Fastening Process: To use a powder-actuated fastener, the operator loads the tool with the appropriate cartridge and fastener. The tool is then placed on the desired spot on the concrete surface, and upon triggering, the explosive charge propels the fastener into the concrete, creating a secure attachment.
Advantages: Powder-actuated fasteners offer several advantages, including speed of installation, minimal damage to the concrete surface compared to traditional drilling methods, and the ability to work in tight spaces.
Limitations: While these fasteners are versatile, they may not be suitable for all concrete types or conditions. Factors such as concrete hardness, thickness, and the presence of reinforcing steel can affect their performance.
In summary, powder-actuated fasteners are a valuable tool in the construction and industrial sectors for securely attaching materials to concrete surfaces. However, their proper use and adherence to safety guidelines are essential to ensure successful and safe fastening operations.

User questions & answers
Question: | How loud is this? Are different loads quieter? If I use this outside will it cause a lot of concern of gunshots |
Answer: | This is mostly intended to attach wood to concrete and have the nail sit flush. But It could if you get creative. For example you could fire it into a small 1x2 block. It should set the nail flush with the wood, then you can knock the block out by splitting with a chisel and hammer. Or you could try firing long nails with undersized loads, like a 3 1/2" nail with a brown level 2 load will probably leave some nail head protruding. But for your purpose you may be better off with a concrete drill and screw. |
Question: | Can this tool be used to attach furring strips to a brick fireplace |
Answer: | It could, but as the previous responder pointed out, it may blow out your blocks if they are hollow. A better bet would be to drill holes and use masonry screws or anchor bolts. A hammer drill goes a long way to helping drill the holes, but it can be managed with a regular drill and masonry bit. If you're adding a 2x4 to the cinder block to build a wall, I would use 3 half inch redhead anchor bolts, liberally apply construction adhesive to the back side of the 2x4, and not worry about it ever again. Also consider you probably want to use a pressure treated board when attaching to concrete. |
Question: | Will this allow the nail to protrude from the wall for hanging purposes |
Answer: | It is translucent. Hope this helps. It will go on all types of skin. I use it and I have a darker skin tone and it goes on perfectly. Don't need to use to much. It helps makeup stay even during a workout! |
Question: | Can it be used to fasten 1x4s to cinder blocks |
Answer: | I never had any problems with the product or questioned if it was authentic. It was a lot cheaper than buying it Ulta Beauty. Good product. |

Question: | Do these work in remington powder actuated tools ( guns)? calls for 22 caliber, neck down and crimped |
Answer: | If it’s a 22 caliber tool, then any 22 load will work, the only one that won’t work are the larger Hilti but those are .23 and they won’t even fit the tool. Be sure the job you are doing requieres the yellow, you might destroy some stuff if you use the most powerful yellow and red loads. |
Question: | can these be used in a 22 pistol just looking for sound when training my pup |
Answer: | That’s what I bought them for. They work but it’s black powder so if you don’t clean very well after it will rust up. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can these purple (high power level 6) be safely used as blanks in a 22lr revolver without damage |
Answer: | It is loud. The loads look and sound like pistol shot. It could absolutely be mistaken for gunfire. If there's any adverse consequences to this kind of noise you should look into a hammer drill and concrete bolts. (also noisy, but not mistaken for firearms) |
Question: | The tools indicated in the product description use necked-down powder loads. Will a straight sided load even fit into the chamber of these tools |
Answer: | Yes, it has plenty of power to drive nails through the furring strips into brick or mortar. The only concern would be whether it would blow out the brick when the nail goes in. For brick I would recommend drilling holes for screws or bolts, use red heads, or tapcon fasteners. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use dewalt brand nails and .22 loads |
Answer: | You don't specify the size of the nail that you plan to use. But I wouldn't recommend it for cinder block. On cement block, it will work if you are able to avoid the hollow portion of the block. Otherwise, it could blow out the back portion of the block. Remember to follow the ratings on the charge. |
Question: | Whats the weight capacity for hanging something |
Answer: | Hello, the pistol only uses one shot at a time, you need to recharge every time you shoot (nail) |
Question: | Will this tool work with concrete/cinder block? Some say no. If not, what alternative works with similar ease/mechanism of use |
Answer: | Probably not a good idea. I know ammo is very hard to get but these are not the answer. |
Question: | Can you hand 1 hole straps with this and/or drive rings |
Answer: | I don’t think so. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Going to put up a stud wall, bottom plate on concrete. What lemght of nail should I use? Is the 2-1/2 enough |
Answer: | Yes. That’s what I used along with construction adhesive. Make sure you use nails rated for pressure treated wood. Most codes require pressure treated against concrete and it’s just a good idea to use it. |
Question: | Can this fastener be used in the Duo-Fast brand tool |
Answer: | Yes it will work. |
Question: | Is 2 1/2 inch long sufficient enough to drive 2x4 into concrete instead of using 3inch nail |
Answer: | According to Ramset's website, 2 1/2 inch is what you use for attaching 2x4's to concrete. |
Question: | are these non corrosive |
Answer: | PLEASE READ: These nails WILL corrode in treated lumber, as they do not have the Ramguard coating. The seller advertises them as the non-corrosive version, when they are the plain version (1516). You are instead looking for model # 1516E (or 1516SDE, which have washers). The Ramguard coated nails have more of a painted tan color to them. |

Question: | I have remington model 479. i am looking for loads for this model. what are the best loads |
Answer: | mine only fired two times and has never fired again. there is no way to take it apart and fix it. |
Question: | where the load is placed to fire, is that portion (the barrel)should it be open & clear. to strike the nail |
Answer: | Yes. It all depends on the type of blanks you use. There are different colors depending of the power. |
Question: | will this item work good on holding down carpet tackstrip to concrete |
Answer: | This is not a precision tool. You should use concrete anchors instead. I'd be concerned about breaking the edge of the stair off, or of it recoiling hard if you're trying to punch it through metal. It's really only meant to drive nails through treated wood. |
Question: | Can it be used to attach a 2x4 to concrete for framing? It would need to penetrate the 1 3\4 of the 2x4 and then into concrete |
Answer: | Yes, you have different length of washered pins that this tool will shoot attaching wood to metal or concrete by varying the . 22 load used. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this air locker work on a Toyota 4runner? Cause Amazon is saying it will |
Answer: | It is a term to say that this is an air powered fastener driver designed for cement, cinder block and such. I had poor results as it would not drive the T nail into old solid concrete. It may work for new, green concrete, or block. The only thing that I have found to work for attaching to concrete is to drill and use the appropriate anchor. |
Question: | Is this more quiet than the ramset |
Answer: | I have not used 2 1/2 nails with my gun but the 1 1/2 nails went through 3/4 plywood into block wall with no problem. No sure what you are doing but I would not trust it to hold ledger board on and then add a deck to the house |
Question: | What's air locked mean |
Answer: | I use yellow for most of what I do, 2 1/2" nails. Heavier loads for old concrete or longer nails |
Question: | Will this gun a 2 1/2 inch nail through a treated 1 1/2 deck house band into a mortar joint |
Answer: | Yes |
