14 best homebrew sanitizer

Homebrew sanitizers are essential for maintaining a clean and bacteria-free environment during the process of home brewing, whether it's wine making or beer making. Sanitization is crucial because any contamination can lead to off-flavors, spoilage, or even the growth of harmful bacteria in your brew. Here are some common types of homebrew sanitizers:

  1. Bleach: A solution of sodium hypochlorite (bleach) diluted with water can be used as a sanitizer. Make sure to rinse thoroughly with clean, sanitized water after using bleach to prevent off-flavors. Use it at a ratio of around 1 tablespoon of bleach per gallon of water.

  2. Iodophor: Iodophor is an iodine-based sanitizer that is easy to use. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the proper dilution ratio, as it can vary.

  3. Starsan: Starsan is a popular no-rinse sanitizer in the homebrewing community. It is effective and easy to use, but it may foam, which is normal. No rinsing is required as long as you follow the recommended contact time.

  4. One-Step Sanitizer: This is another no-rinse sanitizer that simplifies the sanitization process. It's convenient for beginners but should be used according to the manufacturer's instructions.

  5. Heat: Heat can be an effective sanitizer. Boiling or using high-temperature water to sanitize equipment is a common practice. Make sure the equipment can withstand the heat and allow it to dry before use.

  6. Oxiclean: While primarily used as a cleaner, Oxiclean can also be used as a sanitizer when mixed at a lower concentration than for cleaning. It's important to rinse thoroughly after using Oxiclean to avoid off-flavors.

  7. Potassium Metabisulfite: This chemical compound is often used in winemaking as a sanitizer and to inhibit oxidation. It's important to dissolve it in water and use it as directed.

When using any sanitizer, it's essential to follow the manufacturer's instructions for the correct dilution ratio, contact time, and any safety precautions. Additionally, ensure that all equipment, including fermenters, airlocks, bottles, and utensils, is thoroughly cleaned and sanitized before use to maintain a sterile brewing environment.

Remember that proper sanitization is a critical step in homebrewing to ensure the quality and safety of your final product. Contaminated equipment or ingredients can ruin the taste of your wine or beer, so taking the time to sanitize correctly is well worth the effort.

User questions & answers

Question: Can it be used Outdoor sanitation
Answer: I don't see why not you have to mix it with water so if you're using it outside it should be fine.
Question: Can this be used to sanitize old 5 gallon water jugs? I have some old ones that have sat in the garage for years, and they are probably a bit "funky
Answer: If they're glass just make sure they're clean and yest it will sanitize them. If they're plastic it depends on how old they are and how they have been stored. Plastic will oxidize over time. If the color of the plastic has started to change or the surface has become rough then they're probably not safe to store water, the star san will sanitize it, but the plastics will leach into the water.
Question: can this product be used for wine making as well
Answer: I agree with the other comments, you can use this sanitizer for wine and beer and whatever else you want to sanitize.
Question: Is this for a jacket or sanitizer
Answer: Sanitizer

Five Star - Star San - 16 Ounce - Brew Sanitizer High Foaming Acid Anionic

Five Star

Based on 1 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Star San is an acid based no rinse sanitizer. Use only one ounce per 5 gallons of water. Star San is odorless, flavorless, and requires only one to two minutes of contact time. This product does tend to foam, which has advantages and disadvantages. The foaming action helps to sanitize cracks and crevices, but you need to allow extra time for draining. The foaming action is perfect for plastic fermenters. You can minimize the foaming effect by adding Star San to the vessel after the water has been added, and by siphoning as opposed to pouring the solution between vessels. Since Star San is acid based, contact with soft metals should be kept to a minimum. Kept in a sealed container, a Star San solution will stay effective for as long as three to four weeks. This product is only eligible for ground shipment within the contiguous United States.

  • HIGH FOAMING- This sanitizer produces foam with little agitation for penetration into those cracks and crevices of equipment
  • CONVENIENT NO-RINSE FORMULA- With only a 30 second contact time, this sanitizer doesn't need to be rinsed off When left to dry on stainless steel at certain concentrations, it will passivate and protect the equipment
  • SAFE AND EASY TO USE - Comes in an easy dosing dual-neck bottle with built-in measurements
  • EFFECTIVE ON MANY SURAFACES- Great for use on carboys, kegs, fermentors, kettles, brewing systems, chillers, and heat exchangers
  • USED BY PROFESSIONALS- Many craft brewers choose Star San as their sanitizer of choice in order to make good beer

Answer: There is no alcohol in this product
Question: Can this be used on dairy equipment like silicone and plastic lines and attachments
Answer: I use it for beer brewing equipment and my keg lines.
Question: Can this product be used as a hand sanitizer when diluted properly

The Manufacturer

For 9 years now, we have been serving the brewing and winemaking industry as well as homebrewing enthusiasts with our game changing products under the brands FastWasher, FastRack and FastFerment . Our products have been carefully designed to bring you ease and peace of mind when it comes to hygiene and cleanliness in making your favorite beverage.  It doesn't matter if you are a professional in the industry or an individual who just enjoys brewing beer we have everything you will ever need.

The Science Behind One Step

One Step, the original no-rinse cleanser, uses active oxygen to clean your equipment. In addition to being designed to minimize residue and while maximizing detergency, One Step uses oxygen entrained within a mineral crystal that dissolves when combined with water. The oxygen is then released to form hydrogen peroxide – a compound long known for its sanitizing and disinfectant abilities. The hydrogen peroxide completes its work and then degrades into oxygen and water, leaving behind only the minerals that are stable, naturally occurring compounds – no different than minerals often found in drinking water.

Cleaning Instruction

Mix One tablespoon of One Step beer sanitizer with one gallon of warm water.

  • Package Dimensions : 14.2 L x 16.6 H x 16.2 W (centimeters)

User questions & answers

Question: What are the ingredients
Answer: It contains percarbonates, probably sodium, calcium or magnesium carbonates. Essentially, it is very similar to oxyclean, but from my experience it is better. That may be because it seems to be finer and goes into solution very quickly. One thing I know is that it works. Use it carefully in order to avoid splashing it in your eyes.
Question: will this be shipped in the plastic bucket or a plastic bag
Answer: As I recall, the bucket was shipped in a box.
Question: Can I run this through my Sanke tap, lines and facet, let dry then just switch back to beer
Answer: I personally use it as a cleaner only. I still highly recommend sanitizing with a sanitizer before committing anything to a vessel. Keg, Kettle, etc. It is nice for a relatively spot free rinse.
Question: Is this product safe for aluminum
Answer: As far as I know it is.

User questions & answers

Question: Anybody used star san to sanitize humidifier tank, specifically air-o-swiss/boneco models
Answer: Yes it can...but I usually just use hot white distilled vinegar for that (it helps break down deposits better when hot). Vinegar works better for actual cleaning. I use it to clean coffee maker too. Just remember to flush/rinse it with water (when using vinegar not StarSan)
Question: Any fumes if used in a sleeping arera? If so, do you have a product that doesn't have fumes
Answer: I have never experienced any fumes from this product. Just follow the instructions (carefully!) because it's a strong acid. You should be fine to keep it in a sleeping area and to use it there too. It's a really good disinfectant and sterilizer that just evaporates after it is used.
Question: Does Star San expire or go bad? The large bottle is the best value but I want to know how long I can keep it on the shelf before the quality degrades
Answer: I agree with Steven (commented June 22,2018) that the bottle can go bad. After a few years (maybe 3-4?) my bottle broke, leaked onto the basement floor -- luckily the unfinished concrete part -- and chowed a millimeter or two into it. Fantastic product, but I'd only buy enough to last you a year or two, even though the savings for larger quantities are substantial.
Question: Can I store mixture after I sanitize the equipment and use it after a few days or a week? Also how long does it stay sanitized
Answer: The Star San mixture can be stored for later use. We keep it in a spray bottle or in a bucket sealed with a lid for a few weeks.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this product safe for non-stick coating on pot? First time brewing and don't want to buy another pot unless I have to
Answer: You really should be using stainless pots for brewing. I don't know any brewers who would even think about a using something with a non-stick coating. I'm sure that the coating would probably leach into the wort. Maybe you should consider not boiling the ingredients to make your wort and get something like Coopers which doesn't need boiling since the ingredients come in cans and only need really hot water. I guess that Star San would sanitize your non-stick pot, but I would never use a non stick pot.
Question: My bottle was received with the cap not tightened and leaked all over. Is the remaining liquid usable
Answer: Yes. These always comes with lose caps and to ship them properly they must be tightened. We actually vacuum seal the bottles as well for shipping but you didn't buy this from us. As this is a cleanser it is not contaminated by being opened (shook up in the mail). Food would be. Cleanser, no. Every single drop you have in the bottle is perfectly good for use for cleaning. Mailing of liquids very often results in leaks, that's just the nature of shipping liquids.
Question: Does this work for jars that I'm using for pickles and other fermented products? Is it food safe
Answer: I would say that I would just start your jars off in cold water and let them come to a boil in the water. Then as you use your jars take them out of the water bath and drain them on a clean towel and then fill them. You want to have your jars HOT because what you are canning is going to be hot. The hot /boiling water will kill the bacteria that may happen. I have used this OLD, but tried and true method for years making salsa, jams, tomato sauce and pickles. If I have a full load in the dishwasher I sometimes run the jars in the dishwasher and use them hot from there. You want to prevent breakage of the jars adding hot things to cold jars can cause breakage. Yes, this is food safe though. I use it for my beer bottles and sanitation of my equipment. I hope that this answered your question.
Question: Can this be used on portable ice makers with nickel plated evaporators
Answer: Thank you for your inquiry. Star san is a great sanitizer for beer and wine making supplies. I would not recommend using on something that is nickel plated.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this negatively alter the flavor of homemade wine
Answer: I've used this for making beer, and wine. It's a must have for any home brewer, winemaker. It did not alter either of those items tastes, but without using it, you can risk some bad flavors getting incorporated via un-clean equipment, hoses etc.
Question: Do you rinse this product off with clean water after sanitation
Answer: I do not as it is a food grade sanitizer and rinsing it would be counter productive
Question: I have read that star san will remove painted labeling on glass bottles. do not need foaming so will the low foaming iodophor also remove these
Answer: the foaming star san disinfects through the use of an acid, and it's this acid that takes off the labels on glass bottles. The iodine disinfectant in this low-foaming sanitizer isn't the same compound and won't work. To remove bottle labels, the best trick I've used is to buy CLR (calcium lime rust remover) from the hardware store, add a few glugs to a sink full of water and let the bottles soak for a few hours. You sometimes still need to scrub with a brillo pad, but I've been very happy with the results, and it's cheaper than starsan too!

User questions & answers

Question: Is this a "no-rinse" solution
Answer: PBW Is a cleanser, so you will rinse after use. After cleaning and rinsing, try Five Star's "Star San" which is a no-rinse Sanitizer.
Question: Will this work plastic to clean water reservoirs like camel-bak
Answer: It would work well I think with some soaking to clean gunk out of the bladder and tubing. I've used it on plastic brewing equipment without problems, although nothing as soft and flexible as a Camelbak bladder. Be sure to rinse really well!
Question: There isn't an ingredient label. what is in pbw? can it replace soda when making homemade cleaning solutions
Answer: PBW is 29% sodium percarbonate, 31% sodium metasilicate and 23% sodium sulfate. It also contains surfactants and chelaters (5% each) and a gelling agent (7%). I don't know if that would replace soda when making homemade cleaning solutions, but hopefully this information will be helpful.
Question: Is this food grade
Answer: No this product is not food grade. A food grade chemical can be added to a food product and ingested. Yes, this product was formulated to be used to clean food processing/brewing equipment but it would be classified as an A1 material under NSF. Answer: I should add that I use only this (no additional sanitizer) on a carboy that doesn't have a film as a way to sanitize before adding in my wort. I haven't used this to clean after, I do that with warm water and a carboy brush. Never had a bad batch of wort.
Question: What are the ingredients in One Step
Answer: The ingredients in One Step include the following: sodium carbonate peroxyhydrate, sodium carbonate, sodium citrate and sodium chloride.
Question: Why not just use a bleach solution
Answer: If cleaning your brewing equipment, know that bleach residue will give your beer a band-aid taste. Stay away from it. I've used 1-step for years and have never had an infection or off flavor to my wine or beer. Its good stuff and easier to work with than other products I've tried.
