The auto seal mechanism means the mug is always sealed, and you depress a button to activate a spring mechanism to allow flow through the spout. The snapseal you flip up and it opens, but it stays open until you flip the mechanism down. Here is why the snapseal is better - over time the spring mechanism in the autoseal will accumulate "coffee product" in and around the spring, which is difficult to clean without completely disassembling the lid.
