More you can do yourself will save you labor costs, but keep in mind HVAC Techs have alot of money invested in equipment, training and so on.... Spend a little money before you do anything and get an HVAC pro to sit down with you, get a game plan, spec out the system that will work for your situation, help you make a list of everything you can get yourself and you do the grunt work getting it all . Window unit or Mini Split is very doable if you are handy yourself, or even a package unit. But a full size split system is a lot of work , requires alot of expensive tools and the expertise to hook it all up , get it charged properly , set your fan speeds and so on.... That is where a Pro will get it right..... I am on a super tight budget and understand not everybody can right a big check and it's all taking care of, I am looking at the most cost effective solution myself to replace a 12 year old central air/ heat-pump system that is starting to fall apart.
