12 best cold sore meds
Cold sores, also known as fever blisters, are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1). There are several over-the-counter (OTC) medications and treatments available to manage the symptoms of cold sores. These treatments can help alleviate pain, reduce healing time, and prevent the spread of the virus to other people.
Here are some common OTC cold sore medications and treatments:
Antiviral Creams: Topical creams containing antiviral medications like acyclovir (Zovirax) or docosanol (Abreva) can help reduce the severity and duration of cold sores. They should be applied as soon as you notice the tingling or itching sensation that precedes the outbreak.
Oral Antiviral Medications: In some cases, your healthcare provider may prescribe oral antiviral medications like valacyclovir (Valtrex) or famciclovir (Famvir) to manage recurrent or severe cold sores.
Pain Relievers: OTC pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help reduce pain and discomfort associated with cold sores.
Lip Balms: Lip balms containing moisturizing ingredients like beeswax or petroleum jelly can help keep the affected area moisturized and prevent cracking.
Lysine Supplements: Some people find relief from cold sores by taking lysine supplements, an amino acid that may help inhibit the replication of the herpes virus. However, scientific evidence on its effectiveness is mixed.
Herbal Remedies: Certain herbal extracts, such as lemon balm or tea tree oil, are thought to have antiviral properties and can be applied topically to cold sores. However, their effectiveness varies from person to person.
Preventive Measures: To prevent cold sores, you can take steps to reduce triggers, such as stress and exposure to extreme weather conditions. Avoid sharing utensils, towels, or lip products with others during an outbreak, as the virus is highly contagious.
It's important to note that while these OTC treatments can help manage cold sore symptoms, they do not cure the underlying herpes infection. If you have frequent or severe cold sore outbreaks, consult a healthcare professional for personalized advice and potential prescription treatments.
Always follow the instructions on the product label or your healthcare provider's advice when using any cold sore medication or treatment. If your symptoms worsen or persist, seek medical attention.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this product be used to prevent spreading? Or just when cold sore is acting up |
Answer: | For children under the age of two, you should consult their doctor. |
Question: | The pump is more expensive. Is it hard to get all of it out of the tube that seems like a better value |
Answer: | That depends on how long a person's hair is. For men, you could certainly do 2 treatments. For shoulder length or longer hair, at least 2/3 of the can will be used because you have to saturate the hair. |
Question: | This product has docosanol 10% and doco shield has the same amount, but is a lot cheaper. is there any advantage to abreva |
Answer: | The package says 15 minutes. After we got all her hair saturated, we gave it 20 minutes just to be sure. But you do need to treat again 10 days later. One application didn't do it either time, but twice with the second application 10 days after the first did. Both times she got it at school so maybe she was getting reexposed? Not sure. I just know we had to treat twice. |
Question: | Are you supposed to poke a hole in the tube to open it |
Answer: | Hi, I'm from the Vamousse Customer Support Team, and wanted to assist you in your question regarding the ingredients. I am confirming that there is no tea tree oil in our product. The only ingredients in our lice treatment, as listed on the box, are as follows: Active: Natrum Muriaticum 2X (HPUS), Inactive: Ammonium benzoate, Benzyl alcohol, Butyl lactate, Cocamidopropyl betaine, Diazolidinyl urea, Fragrance, Isopropyl alcohol, Isopropyl myristate, Magnesium lauryl sulfate, Propellant A-46, Triethyl citrate and Water. Question: | What is the difference between this product, and the Abreva that comes in tubes? Are ingredients identical |
Answer: | Maybe a better solution is not needing treatment,,, just trying to help. LICORICE ROOT EXTRACT PREVENTS Cold Sore VIRUS FROM STARTING. USE ONLY A FEW DAYS ABOUT EVERY THIRD WEEK OR AS NEEDED, PROBLEM Solved. I am not a HCP. ( Rather Scientist) Much rather. Prevent cold sores, then you don't have to treat. GONE, Gone, GONE for decades. SOLARAY BRAND has been effective for me for 40 years,,, not expensive. I have no conflict of interest or affiliation with brand above. JUST TRYING TO BE HELPFUL. COLD SORES are an unnecessary luxury.. Note for CDC: I Stopped this cold sore virus temporarily. ( 3 yrs. each booster) with Smallpox vaccination booster. Worth studying. I'm a Chemist/Bacteriologist~~~~ retired; NOT a health care provider: My last experience with them was disastrous, survived but barely, and crippled by them. |
Question: | Is pump better then tube |
Answer: | I prefer the tube. More control, less waste. Pump is a metered dose that's a pretty big glob. Abreva works best if you get started at earliest sign of flare-up. |
Question: | How do you get the last bit of the medicine out of the pump? With my makeup that comes in a pump, I can take the lid out and use a cotton swab, etc |
Answer: | I have no idea. I only bought the pump by accident. I don't like the pump because you can't control the portion size it gives and your question is actually another reason to stick with the tube version. I do love Abreva, though!!! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this work better than abreva |
Answer: | I wear a cotton mask and have absolutely NO problems with it having any effect on the patch. My patch is not on my lip so I'm not sure whether the location of the patch relative to the mask would make a difference. The patch has worked wonderfully for me and I hope it works well for others. |
Question: | How many vials can one use ina day |
Answer: | It will always be different for each individual. Depends on your breakout and usual healing cycle. On my top lip, I rubbed tea tree oil and placed the patch on as soon as I felt the tingling. Nothing formed and it went away within 24 hrs. The other breakout on my bottom lip lasted around 5 days but the patch definitely protected it and absorbed the fluid from it. |
Question: | What is the difference between this one that only says touch free and the one that says single dose (some come with moisturizer |
Answer: | I haven’t used it yet I bought in for just in case purposes |
Question: | does this really work |
Answer: | The directions are on the package. If you follow them completely, the patch comes off really well. |

1. Break To Release The Medication
Slide-off to remove the protective blue paper cover and slide it on the other end – opposite the white applicator tip.
Squeeze the vial firmly on the arrow shown on the protective blue paper cap until you hear it snap.
Hold with the white applicator tip down to allow medication to saturate the tip.
Do not touch the white applicator tip with your fingers.
2. Numb Before Rubbing
To minimize pain during application, gently touch the site of the cold sore with the saturate applicator tip.
Wait about 30 seconds to allow the pain reliever to numb the area. Numbing lasts several minutes.
3. Rub
Once the area is numb, rub the site of the cold sore and the surrounding area. Rub firmly to allow treatment to deeply penetrate the skin.
On open sores – Start by rubbing the surrounding area. Then firmly press the applicator tip to the cold sore. Avoid scrubbing; this will further open the lesion.
It is recommended to use all the medication in the vial.
4. Dispose
Recap the white applicator tip and dispose of immediately. Do not disassemble. Keep out of reach of children.
Know Your Cold Score Triggers
At the first tingle, you should be 'on alert' for a cold sore. That means you need to take extra precautions until you are certain that an infection is recurring or that it is not. Do your best to avoid your triggers. This not only limits the number of times you have to experience cold sores, but also the times you can spread the infection to others.
Keep Your Distance (During a Cold Sore Flare-Up)
Since any skin-to-skin contact with an active cold sore blister can trigger an infection in another person, you should avoid close contact if you have a cold sore, or notice one on someone else. Remember that most people contact HSV as a child. Do not share any food, drink, straw, cup, lip balm, or anything that goes on or near your mouth – and no kissing.
Keep Your Hands to Yourself
There’s a good chance someone with a cold sore could inadvertently touch the affected area, and then touch another item. So, you need to be conscious about keeping your hands away from your mouth during an active outbreak. You should also wash your hands often and immediately after touching your mouth.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the key difference between zilactin and zilactin-b? the 'b' is more expensive. what does b have that regular zilactin does not |
Answer: | Zilactin-B contains Benzocaine, a local anesthetic (pain reliever). Zilactin does not. |
Question: | How do you remove the product? Direction say to put some more of the product on and wipe it with a wet towel, but that isn't working |
Answer: | That way only works for one layer but if you have been putting frequently then you have to put water warm water for a long time, preferably while you are showering until you feel it’s soft to the touch, then that’s where you can apply new stuff and wipe it off before it dries out! I hope it works. One tip before you do that, if the cold sore is still fresh and there if you remove it you might also bother it and stay longer, so just be careful. This thing works and if I leave it for up to three days on the sore actually heal fast! |
Question: | Difference between Zilactin and Zilactin-B |
Answer: | I've only used Zilactin-B, but may try this one as well. Zilactin-B is dark brown and makes a heavy crust over the sore. If the area is dry when applied, It stays in place well. This Zilactin appears to be clear and I'm unsure whether it makes a "shell" over the sore or not. I usually only get canker sores inside my mouth, but have started getting them outside and want a clear gel. Zilactin has been a God-send for me as I get terrible outbreaks. |
Question: | How does it taste |
Answer: | It doesn't taste good at all. Don't lick your lips when you first put this on and it is wet. Gross. |

Question: | Is this better than DocoShield |
Answer: | yes, It is a very good product. |
Question: | better then prescription zorivax |
Answer: | Yes I would use it on an 8 year old...it is all natural ingredients so it can't hurt. My sister started me on the ointment many years ago because she was using it on her daughter who had a constant rash around her mouth..and it helped clear it up rather quickly. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do you need to fully depress the pump to get the product out or can you slowly press it and stop until you get what you need |
Answer: | Yes you can partially depress pump ... but its hard to remember to do. I end up putting a small amount in a container and use from that. Several of us at wk get cold sores so we never use from container as we share it. |
Question: | What is the expiration dates if I order today |
Answer: | If you buy from Welness OTC, our expiration is 3/2020. |
Question: | is it the same product in the pump vs the tubee |
Answer: | I felt it was different. It took longer for my cold sore to disappear. The tube for me took 2 maybe 3 days. The pump took about a week. It was also a bit thin compared to the tube. |
Question: | Is there supposed to be a safety seal on this product |
Answer: | Not on the pump itself. The screw cap one does where you flip the cap and push it into top and break seal. But the Abreva pump pictured only should be in an unbroken package and no safety seal on pump itself. Hope this helps. All my best-J |
