12 best decongestants

Decongestants are medications commonly used to relieve nasal congestion, which is often associated with conditions like the common cold, allergies, or sinusitis. They are available over-the-counter (OTC) and in prescription forms and are typically found in the aisle of sinus medicine and allergy relief products. Here's what you should know about decongestants:

  1. Nasal Congestion Relief: Decongestants work by narrowing the blood vessels in the nasal passages. This action reduces blood flow to the nasal tissues and decreases swelling and congestion, allowing for easier breathing.

  2. Types of Decongestants: There are two primary types of decongestants:

    • Oral Decongestants: These are taken by mouth in the form of tablets or capsules. They are systemic decongestants, meaning they affect the entire body and can provide relief for both nasal and sinus congestion. Common OTC oral decongestants include pseudoephedrine and phenylephrine.
    • Nasal Decongestants: Nasal decongestants are available as sprays or drops that are applied directly into the nostrils. They work locally to relieve congestion and provide quick relief. Common OTC nasal decongestants include oxymetazoline and phenylephrine.
  3. Duration of Use: Decongestants are generally intended for short-term use to relieve acute congestion. Prolonged or excessive use of nasal decongestant sprays, in particular, can lead to a condition called "rebound congestion" where your congestion worsens when you stop using the spray.

  4. Potential Side Effects: Decongestants can have side effects, which may include increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure, restlessness, insomnia, and dry mouth. It's essential to use them as directed and avoid exceeding recommended doses.

  5. Caution with Certain Medical Conditions: People with certain medical conditions, such as high blood pressure, heart problems, diabetes, and thyroid disorders, should use decongestants with caution or under medical supervision. It's important to consult with a healthcare professional before using decongestants if you have these conditions.

  6. Drug Interactions: Decongestants can interact with other medications, including certain antidepressants and MAO inhibitors. It's crucial to inform your healthcare provider about all medications you are taking to avoid potential interactions.

  7. Alternative Treatments: If you prefer to avoid medication or have concerns about decongestants, there are alternative treatments for nasal congestion, including saline nasal sprays, humidifiers, and steam inhalation. These methods can help alleviate symptoms without the use of medication.

  8. Allergy Medications: Decongestants are often combined with antihistamines in allergy medications to provide relief from both congestion and allergy symptoms such as sneezing and itching.

Remember that while decongestants can provide effective relief from nasal congestion, they are not a cure for the underlying causes of congestion, such as colds or allergies. If your symptoms persist or worsen, it's advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. Always follow the recommended dosages and guidelines provided on the product label or by your healthcare provider when using decongestants.

Common Cold

A cold usually includes a runny nose, sore throat, sneezing, and coughing. These symptoms can last for up to two weeks. Over 200 viruses can cause the common cold. The rhinovirus is the most common type of virus that causes colds.

Flu

Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses infecting the nose, throat and lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness. Serious outcomes of flu infection can result in hospitalization or death. Some people, such as older people, young children, pregnant women, and people with certain health conditions, are at high risk for serious flu complications. There are two main types of influenza (flu) virus: Types A and B. The influenza A and B viruses that routinely spread in people are responsible for seasonal flu epidemics each year.

How Cold and Flu Spreads

Most experts believe that cold and flu viruses are spread by respiratory droplets propelled when people with cold or flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people 3 to 6 feet away. Less often, a person might get a cold or the flu by touching a surface/object that has the virus on it and then touching their mouth or nose.

Period of Contagiousness

You may be able to pass on a cold or flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick. Most healthy adults may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 5 to 7 days after becoming sick. Some people, especially young children and people with weakened immune systems, might be able to infect others for an even longer time.

User questions & answers

Question: where is it made
Answer: If it works, it will take about 30 minutes. HOWEVER, this product is not Sudafed, it is Phenylephrine, which in many studies has shown that in nearly 80% or all users testing, it was ineffective. You may want to go to a pharmacy and purchase actual SUDAFED (NOT PE), you will have to show your ID for the purchase, but Sudafed (Not PE) works as advertised. Hope that helps.

Mucinex Sinus-Max Provides Triple Action Relief

When you’re fighting sinus pressure and a stuffy nose, Mucinex Sinus-Max Full Force Nasal Spray features a Concentrated Vapor Technology which delivers fast relief and lasts for 12 hours.

Nasal Congestion

The underlying cause of your stuffy nose is typically irritated or inflamed nasal mucus membranes and surrounding tissue as well as enlarged blood vessels. That stuffed up feeling that comes with congestion is mostly caused by this swelling combined with the thick mucus that may be stuck in your narrowed nasal passages, making it difficult to breathe through the nose.

Sinus Congestion

Your sinuses, the pairs of cavities in your skull that connect to your nasal passageways, are thinly lined with mucus membranes to keep the inside of your nose moist. Irritants like viruses can cause the mucus membranes to become inflamed, resulting in space restriction and accumulation of mucus in the sinus. This causes that uncomfortable feeling of sinus congestion.

Sinus Pressure

Irritants can cause inflammation of the mucus membranes lining your airways and swelling of the sinus tissues, leading to space restriction and decreased drainage of the sinus. This causes excess mucus buildup, putting pressure on the underlying tissues in your face and leading to that uncomfortable feeling of sinus pressure.

User questions & answers

Question: What if it gets into baby eyes ? What should I do
Answer: Don't know - should say on the order page - but as effective as any other I've taken, including name brand.
Question: What is the expiration date of this product
Answer: Yes it contains microcrystaline cellulose.
Question: Did it clear baby’s stuffy nose
Answer: I don't remember a strong chemical taste. I only took several pills a long time ago because it did not seem to have the same medical benefit that I got from a combo Rx that included (Tylenol) acephetophenamin sp? which I had to stop taking because the Tylenol was interferring with one of my other preacriptions. For some reason that combo product also helped my acid reflux that it was not the intended benefit. This drug and the Tylenol were the only 2 ACTIVE iNGREDIENTS.???? OF THAT COMBO rX.
Question: What is the expire date for this product if I ordered from amazon
Answer: If I remember correctly the dosing info is under the peep back label slapped on the bottle. I don't remember whether it was imprinted on the bottle or on the back side of the label itself....but it was there after I swore it was not. I complained about that aspect in my user review.

Question: Is this a temporary reliever or will this fix sinus and congestions issues? Thanks
Answer: This is temporary relief. Use 2 or 3 sprays in each nostril. Not more often than every 10 to 12 hours. Do not exceed 2 doses in 24 hours. The Vicks Team
Question: Mine 2 pack came today in sealed boxes but no plastic safety seal on caps/bottles - is this normal
Answer: I think I had the same question last year about no inner bottle plastic seal, bc I distinctly recall performing a rather dangerous ballet trying to get a shrink wrap thing off the Vicks brand, the one with the pump type sprayer (rather than the old school squeeze-to-spray). I was desperately stuffed up, late at night, so said a little prayer n used it anyway, no harmful effects. Most boxes containing personal products, state *on the box* how its packaged inside. Usually, "Carton glued shut for your protection; inner bottle shrink wrapped with [Brand Name] logo plastic. Do not use product if any protective wrap missing." I have not seen that language on this product packaging. There Oughta Be A Law! Every OTC drugstore product should describe protective packaging ON THE CARTON. Because you KNOW store clerks restocking returns are saying, "Its still good...!" And back on the shelf it goes! Really ALL drugstore returns should go back to the vendor to determine if it can be sold again.
Question: What is the difference between this and Flonase
Answer: If you try Flnase, make sure someone is there with you at the time. I've used Afrin for years (same ingredient at Sinex), and tried Flonase which works great for my grandchildren. It immediately caused my nasal passages to swell completely shut and I began having trouble breathing even through my mouth. Took me about 8 times of spraying with Afrin before it cleared up. Afrin is "addicting" in that studies show it causes a rebound effect that may make the sinus mucosa swell more. However, if you hear that it causes increase in blood pressure, studies have shown that it does not. (I don't know about Flonase for either of these possible effects, though.)
Question: Hi si this much diff than their product vicks sinex moisturizing nasal and sinus spray, ultra fine mist, 0.5 fl oz
Answer: Honestly, I've used both and prefer this one. I think it's a bit stronger. I've been suffering with sinus congestion for 20 years, this is the only nasal spray that gives relief when I'm really congested. I had sinus surgery a couple of years ago and I truly thought it would fix it, it worked for a year or so, but it didn't last beyond that, so it's time to buy stock in Sinex.

User questions & answers

Question: Seller, is the container for this item a glass or plastic? And if plastic, is it a pump or a squeeze bottle
Answer: Saline is just water with sodium chloride (also known as salt water). Shouldn't be a big deal if it gets in the eyes.
Question: How does the moisturizing spray compare to the original version
Answer: I bought several boxes 12/2014 and the expiration date on them is 8/2016. Not sure if that helps much though! :)
Question: which one is better
Answer: It didn’t clear completely all at once but after a couple drops and the nose suction it helped clear out the hard bigger booger’s
Question: Is there a scent
Answer: This is sterile water with salt, a saline solution. It's expiration date is the same as a bottle of water: until it's opened, you have approximately 2 years from purchase due to the permeability of the plastic. After that minute particles from the air will have penetrated and you will now have dusty saline solution. However, once you've opened it, contaminated it with boogers, I would throw it away around 6 months.

User questions & answers

Question: Are the tablets colored or white. Colored tabs are undesirable for me because of the dye
Answer: The product comes in a glass bottle with a spray top that is pumped to dispense the spray.
Question: What are all the active ingredients
Answer: I am very happy with the moisturizing spray, and I am not sure I have ever used the original version. I find that this new version is very effective. I have allergies and this Sinex clears my nose and it stays clear for several hours.
Question: Is this product provided by an American company
Answer: I assume your talking about the glass or plastic bottle. I much prefer the bottle. The only problem with it is after two or three days my sinuses seem to clog up more with each use after it wears off. So I try to keep my usage down to a day or two. But at least it lets me sleep at night.
Question: Is this product gluten free
Answer: No scent, if it gets to your throat it will be salty.
