12 best airplane ear plugs
Airplane earplugs, also known as earplane earplugs or pressure-relief earplugs, are specialized earplugs designed to alleviate discomfort and protect the ears from pressure changes during air travel. They are primarily used to prevent or reduce ear pain and discomfort that can occur during takeoff and landing when the cabin pressure in an airplane changes rapidly. Here are some key points about airplane earplugs:
Pressure Equalization: Airplane earplugs are equipped with a unique design that helps equalize the pressure inside and outside the ear canal as the altitude of the aircraft changes. This helps prevent the sensation of blocked or "popping" ears, which can be uncomfortable or painful.
How They Work: These earplugs typically have a small vent or filter that allows air to flow in and out of the ear canal, gradually equalizing the pressure. This feature helps mitigate the pressure differential between the inner ear and the cabin environment.
Materials: Airplane earplugs are often made from soft and hypoallergenic materials to ensure comfort during extended wear. Some may have adjustable features to better fit various ear sizes.
Disposable and Reusable Options: There are both disposable and reusable versions of airplane earplugs available on the market. Disposable earplugs are designed for single-use and are discarded after the flight, while reusable ones can be cleaned and used on multiple occasions.
Ease of Use: These earplugs are typically easy to insert and remove, making them convenient for travelers of all ages. They are designed to fit comfortably in the ear, with some models featuring flanged tips for a secure fit.
Benefits: The primary benefit of airplane earplugs is the prevention of ear discomfort and pain associated with changes in cabin pressure. They can help reduce the risk of conditions like ear barotrauma or middle ear congestion, which can be particularly problematic for individuals with ear or sinus issues.
Availability: Airplane earplugs can be found in many drugstores, airport shops, and online retailers. They are often sold in travel accessory sections or alongside other ear care products.
Instructions: Users should follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper insertion and use of airplane earplugs to ensure they work effectively.
Airplane earplugs are a useful travel accessory for individuals who experience discomfort during air travel due to pressure changes. They are designed to make the flying experience more comfortable by minimizing the effects of rapid altitude changes on the ears.

User questions & answers
Question: | Mine came with a lanyard that goes around the neck or something. How is it used |
Answer: | The first bullet in the description says Double Noise Reduction SNR34dB so 34 dB? |
Question: | Are these good for long flights (10+ hrs |
Answer: | I think so, yes. And these plugs work really well if you want to block nearly all sound. But the attached metal rings have caused cuts in my ears (I'm a side sleeper) so I'm looking for something else to use. |
Question: | Will you still need to chew gum |
Answer: | I don't know. I have used this Rada bread knife several times a week for many years and, in all this time, have never had to sharpen it. It works beautifully. I own about ten different Rada knives, and these are probably the last knives I will ever buy. If you're on the fence, buy this knife. You will get years of good use out of it, for a very good price, and not have to worry about sharpening it. |
Question: | Do you have to keep them in for the entire flight or just when you take off and land |
Answer: | I never bought this item so I have no idea or any bottle stoppers so I have no clue how to answer. This should never have been sent to me. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How easy are they to put in and remove? I have acrylic nails. Thank you |
Answer: | That's for kids - you attach the lanyard to each earbud, and place it behind the neck in case one falls out. The lanyard prevents it from falling to the ground pretty much! |
Question: | Do these work for weather related migraines |
Answer: | I USED IT ON A FOUR HOUR FLIGHT. IT WORKED. |
Question: | Do these need to be in for the entire flight? Can i put them in just before starting to land |
Answer: | I did not have to |
Question: | Are these Reusable? If so how many times |
Answer: | I experienced pain after landing if I took it off during flight. If I keep it on for the whole duration of flight, I did not have ear pain. |

Alpine FlyFit Airplane Ear Plugs
Every year, millions of people fly across the world, and a large number of people experience an unpleasant pressure or pain in their ears during take-off or landing. Others find the noise in the plane disruptive and tiresome. To this end, Alpine has developed special airplane earplugs: pressure reducing FlyFit. These reusable earplugs are equipped with a unique filter system, so travelers use FlyFit earplugs for sleep on overnight flights, and improved comfort when they are awake.
AlpineAcousticFilters - Pressure-regulating airplane earplugs
FlyFit travel earplugs regulate the uncomfortable pressure on the eardrums during take off or landing. The filters in the noise reducing ear plugs act as a valve and realize a gradual and constant pressure balance between the outside world and the mid-ear. This gives the Eustachian tube sufficient time to adapt to the differences in pressure. In addition, the special AlpineAcousticFilters in the Alpine FlyFit noise reducing earplugs absorb annoying ambient noise. Providing rest and relaxation, travelers can use the earplugs for sleep during long flights or for car, train and bus trips.
AlpineThermoShape Material
The innovative FlyFit airplane pressure earplugs are made of special thermoplastic material, developed by Alpine: AlpineThermoShape. This material takes on the shape of the ear, so the small earplugs have a perfect fit and stay in position at all times, which guarantees optimal absorption and comfort without unpleasant pressure on the ears. The zero silicone earplugs are also hypoallergenic.

User questions & answers
Question: | how many times can you use them before they have to be replaced |
Answer: | I don’t think you’d have any trouble. They have a pretty long end to hold onto. I just flew to Ohio from Seattle. Plane changes in Chicago. Lots of air pressure changes with allergy congestion. Thank God for these miracles! |
Question: | Why can you only use them once |
Answer: | The same company also sells a version made for weather induced migraine pain/symptoms. They are called WeatherX and come with a free phone app that tracks weather pressure changes. I use them for my vestibular migraine symptoms and they work really well. |
Question: | I have flights from Las Vegas to Los Angeles, Los Angeles to Hong Kong, then Hong Kong to Beijing. Can I use the same pair for all flights |
Answer: | The directions say to take them out once you hit your peak altitude, and then when the plane starts its descent, put them back in. I used them on a recent trip, and while the airlines staff were not at all helpful in terms of telling me when the descent began (I knew they'd know because they fly the route frequently), I could tell the very subtle attitude difference in the plane when we started down, and I put them in. It worked great. I would guess if it's a short flight, it would be fine to leave them in the whole flight. I have such a severe problem, I wanted to follow directions, and I will never fly without them again. Ever. |
Question: | What's the difference between these ear plugs and Flents Flite Mate Pressure Reducing Ear Plugs |
Answer: | They recommend using them only twice, so the answer is YES. But, only twice. Might they work more times than that, probably. How many more? Your guess is as good as mine. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will these plugs be too big for my 4 years son |
Answer: | That is a tough question. I think if you can let them pop naturally you’d be better off. I blew my nose very gently and popped my ears but not on purpose and it hurt. But I have a serious problem with my ears feeling like they will explode when I fly and then they hurt for hours after landing. I wear these (out of all of them these worked best for me and came in child size that actually fit my tiny ear holes), and I wear noise canceling headphones on top, and take a lot of Sudafed. That combination makes flying tolerable but not totally. The last time I flew I was sick before we left and was on steroids too and that was the very first time I ever flew and had very little ear pain that went away within 20 minutes of exiting the plane. Hope that helps! |
Question: | I am confused. Why does this product say it can be used on planes and then in a queston they say it cannot |
Answer: | Hello. No these won't fit a child's ears but alpine does make a small child's size in these - https://www.alpinehearingprotection.com/earplugs/pluggies-kids/. I hope this helps. These plugs are the best I have ever used - ever time I fly I have horrible pain but when I discovered these I've not had any issues since. |
Question: | What's the difference between these ear plugs and foam ear plugs |
Answer: | You can use these over and over. I have a pair I have used several flights and they still work just as well as they did when they were new. These earplugs are amazing! |
Question: | Do these have a hole at the end |
Answer: | I had tubes in my ears as a kid and have since had issues with both take off and landing. I was using the disposable Earplanes but with work travel the single use nature of them made me look for another option. These are more comfortable and stop the pressure and resulting pain from flights. |

User questions & answers
Question: | The ent told me i have extremely narrow ear canals, the size of a pen head. would the children ear planes be good for me rather than the adult |
Answer: | They recommend 2x, so one round trip flight. Mostly because of their design. They are designed to keep your ears open & popping (which they do a wonderful job of) so there are grooves where bacteria could grow. I use them every single time i fly now. They are worth every penny for someone like me that has sinus/ear issues. |
Question: | My doughter is 14 years old, and I don't know if this pair will be too small for her, but also I don't know if the adults pair will be too big for her |
Answer: | The little pad inside the tube is designed to allow a certain amount of air pressure through. The EarPlanes are intended to allow a longer time for your ears to equalize to the ambient pressure. After the flight, this pad becomes wet from sweat and full of ear wax, thus not being able to fulfill it's functions. You can easily use them for 3 flights, but I wouldn't recommend using the same pair round trip. The pair is good enough for one way, no matter how many connections you have. |
Question: | Do you take them out after you are in the air or do these stay in your ears the entire flight |
Answer: | Yes. I normally only wear mine for 2 flights, but you can use them longer. I would suggest you take them out for a while when you reach altitude. I think the problem is that they get dirty, and the dirt/ear wax will hurt performance. |
Question: | Can a child wear these and then put on headphones to listen to her tablet |
Answer: | Both products serve the same function but are designed differently. I purchased both and prefer these over the Flents Flite Mate as they fit my ear better. If you expand the photo for both you can see the design differences. Which works best will depend on individual preference. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is it that makes these disposable? I want to use them as earphones along with old earbuds. Remove the CeramX. Will the "body" hold up to use |
Answer: | The ear plugs are suitable for adults, not for kids. Your son needs a kids size ear plugs. |
Question: | Has anyone tried to use these for noise issues |
Answer: | These ear plugs could reduce the air pressure pain and could be used on planes. They are mainly for airplane travels. |
Question: | would these fit for a 2month old to block out noise at basketball games |
Answer: | 1. Different Materials: Silicone and foam 2. Usage: Silicone ear plugs are usually water proof, washable, reusable, suitable for swimming, shower and more. Foam ear plugs are usually disposable, not water-proof 3. Price: silicone ear plugs are higher prices. Foam ear plugs usually a little lower. |
Question: | Can I use them all the flight ?( it's for my son ,3 years old) I need to get 2 planes and will be easy all the flight |
Answer: | Yes! It has a hoe at the end to reduce the pressure when you fly or during altitude change. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work if im driving in elevating levels |
Answer: | I also have small ears and have been using the children's size for over 30 years. I never fly without them as I have always had a problem with equalizing the pressure. Ear planes work great and I highly recommend them! |
Question: | Have anyone ever use these on flights before? I’m trying to preventing the popping of my ears when flying |
Answer: | I am betting that since I am an adult and I use the small ones they would work best for her as well. Truth be told you use them only two times at most and then replace them. I would get one of each the first time. I believe the relief they give us worth it. |
Question: | Are these better than Earplanes that I buy in drug store |
Answer: | I don't use this brand but for me it depends on the length of the flight. I put them in about an hour before take-off. If the flight is only an hour or so, I leave them in. If it is an international flight, I'll take them out once cruising altitude is reached and put them back in an hour before landing. BTW, this brand really hurts my ears. I use FliteMate plugs. They are smooth and the only brand that works for me. I had ten flights on my last pair with absolutely no pain - won't fly without them now. |
Question: | Where are they manufactured |
Answer: | I'm not certain but I would guess, yes. When I wear these earplugs I hear fine so why not wear with headphones? Should be fine. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this be good fit for my 5 year old |
Answer: | Pollen, dust, and moisture will reduce the effectiveness of the EarPlanes for their intended purpose. I have only used them for 2 flights max so I cannot speak to how they hold up long term. I think the not holding up part is more internal and microscopic than visual or in body/feel. |
Question: | Can adults use this? I am not sure if my ear canal is small or not, however, when a plane is descending, I have terrible ear pain |
Answer: | They muffle noise, but don't completely block it. |
Question: | Would you need to wear them the whole flight? Or just during take off and landing |
Answer: | I bought them for myself as I have a small ear canal and I am an adult. I can’t say that they would fit a two month old. My nephew is 11 months and I wouldn’t place those in his ears. Nothing is wrong with the product; I just wouldn’t recommend it for a child under 2 years personally. |
Question: | I have used Earplanes brand previously , they are too small for my ear canals ! Are theses a slightly larger diameter |
Answer: | After suffering thru a trip with a child who had an awful problem with altitude, I researched these plugs. We have used them for our 5 year old grand child on 2 trips over the past year. We put them in before take off and remove them after we reach cruising altitude. We then put them in shortly before decending and she has not had any problems. |

- GREAT FOR SIDE SLEEPERS - No long ends sticking out makes it very comfortable for sleeping on your side. These earplugs are very reliable, as they will not fall out from the ears.
- UNIVERSAL USAGE - These silicone earplugs can easily block all types of noise. The earplugs for sleeping is easy to carry and portable in your backpack, pocket or purse. Ready to use. On the go! They are the best for factories and commercial areas, construction sites, flying and travel, sleeping, swimming and other watersports, concerts and live music, and they are also great for many other activities.
- FOR ALL EAR SIZES - Silicone earplugs for sleeping are designed to fit any ear canal. They can be used as swimming plugs for adults, as well as for children.
User questions & answers
Question: | Do these harden to retain shape |
Answer: | no they do not, they are simply a pliable wax, they mold to the shape of your ear, but when they are removed, you can reshape them. |
Question: | are these re-useable |
Answer: | Yes, just wash them with warm soapy water and let them dry to get rid of the ear wax for a better seal. |
Question: | Do these work for loud neighborhood party |
Answer: | They work great for loud noise but for that you have to move. |
Question: | Have you used these for sleeping and, if so, do they feel more comfotable than foam ear plugs |
Answer: | Much more comfortable than foam. And they seem to block out noise better. I can sleep on my side without noticing the plugs. And to my surprise they have never fallen out unlike foam plugs |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you wash them? I’ve used mine for multiple trips. No idea why they ask you to replenish |
Answer: | Yes - but you must insert the plugs BEFORE you begin to climb initially and leave them in till you descend to the original ground level. If you plan to stay at elevation you can wait a few minutes to SLOWLY remove them at high altitude. Then BEFORE descending put them in again. When at low altitude remove them after reaching low altitude for a few minutes SLOWLY to equalize any pressure difference. These plugs dramatically reduce sound levels - nearly all hearing is cut off. |
Question: | Sanohra is resuable 6x and expensive. Why is this only 2x ... does it truly make a difference beyond the 2x? Users please help so I know which to bu |
Answer: | I bought these for my grown daughter who ears pops so bad she started to cry. We try everything from chewing gum, yawning, Benadryl...nothing work until we found these plugs. They leave her ears a little sore but it stopped her ears from popping and now she travel without fear and is tears free. I highly recommend these plugs. |
Question: | Is there any difference in effectiveness between the new super soft ear planes and the original ones |
Answer: | Actually, we did buy both for our last trip, these from Amazon and a package of two from the drug store. The drug store ones were cheaper, with no remarkable difference. I'd go with the drug store ones! |
Question: | Can these be worn more than 1 time |
Answer: | Thanks for your interest in our products. These earplugs are made in Canada and designed and packaged in the USA at our headquarters in Warren, Michigan. If you have further questions, please contact us at [email protected]. Thanks! |
