13 best artificial sweeteners
Artificial sweeteners, also known as sugar substitutes or sugar alternatives, are synthetic or natural compounds used as substitutes for sugar to sweeten foods and beverages without adding significant calories. They are commonly used in cooking, baking, and as pantry staples. Here's what you need to know about artificial sweeteners:
Types of Artificial Sweeteners: There are several types of artificial sweeteners, each with its own level of sweetness and characteristics. Some common artificial sweeteners include:
- Aspartame: Sold under brand names like NutraSweet and Equal, it is commonly used in sugar-free drinks and sugarless gum.
- Sucralose: Marketed as Splenda, it is heat-stable and can be used in cooking and baking.
- Stevia: Derived from the leaves of the stevia plant, it is considered a natural sweetener and is available in various forms, including liquid drops and powder.
- Saccharin: Known for brands like Sweet'N Low, it was one of the first artificial sweeteners and is often used in tabletop sweeteners.
- Acesulfame Potassium (Ace-K): Often used in combination with other sweeteners to enhance sweetness.
- Monk Fruit Extract: Derived from monk fruit, it is a natural sweetener with zero calories.
Calorie-Free or Low-Calorie: Artificial sweeteners are generally calorie-free or have very few calories, making them popular among individuals looking to reduce their calorie intake or manage conditions like diabetes.
Sweetness Intensity: Artificial sweeteners are significantly sweeter than sugar, so smaller amounts are needed to achieve the desired level of sweetness. This can be advantageous for calorie reduction.
Use in Cooking and Baking: Some artificial sweeteners, like sucralose and stevia, are heat-stable and can be used in cooking and baking to replace sugar in recipes. However, adjustments to recipes may be necessary due to differences in texture and volume.
Health Considerations: Artificial sweeteners are generally recognized as safe (GRAS) when consumed within established acceptable daily intake (ADI) levels. However, there is ongoing debate and research regarding their long-term health effects and potential impacts on cravings.
Diabetes Management: Artificial sweeteners are often used by individuals with diabetes to sweeten foods and beverages without affecting blood sugar levels.
Packaging and Formats: Artificial sweeteners are available in various forms, including granulated, liquid drops, and tablet or packet form. They are commonly found in the grocery and gourmet food sections.
Labeling: Food products containing artificial sweeteners are typically labeled as "sugar-free" or "diet" to indicate their use.
Taste Variations: Different artificial sweeteners can have slightly different tastes and aftertastes, which may affect individual preferences.
Regulatory Approval: In most countries, regulatory agencies such as the FDA in the United States, assess and approve artificial sweeteners for safety and usage.
Artificial sweeteners provide options for people who need or want to reduce their sugar intake while still enjoying sweet-tasting foods and beverages. However, it's important to use them in moderation and be aware of personal taste preferences and potential health considerations.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there an after taste |
Answer: | No, there is not. |
Question: | Why does this also contain acesulfame potassium, another artificial sweetener |
Answer: | It also contains 2 kinds of sugar (dextrose & maltodextrin corn sugar) both raise insulin and blood glucose. Sweet n le added it too unless you can find the liquid. |
Question: | Is there an after taste |
Answer: | I never experienced after taste but I've been using sweeteners for over 15 years. |
Question: | Does anyone know exactly how many carbohydrate grams per packet? "Less than one" isn't specific enough for me; I'm a diabetic |
Answer: | Aspartame is 4 Calories per gram, same as sugar. A teaspoon of sugar is 4 grams, or 16 calories. But aspartame is 200 times sweeter than sugar, so to get the sweetening of one teaspoon, you'd need 16/200 calories worth = 0.08 calories. Aspartame is metabolized like its components, aspartic acid and phenylalanine, both of which are amino acids. Your body will do with it what it does with proteins, which are made up of amino acids. User questions & answers
Question: | What is the ratio of this sweetener to regular sugar for baking? Is it 1 to |
Answer: | No you’ll need to add extra. If it calls for one cup sugar you will use 1 1/3 cup Erythritol. It’s what I use to sweeten all my baked goods and I love it! |
Question: | what is the bag made of, does it contribute anything bad to the product? thanks |
Answer: | Love the product. Packaging does not contribute smell or taste to the product. |
Question: | This product is listed as 100% erythritol, but several questions answered by other buyers said it is a mixture of sugar/stevia. Which is it |
Answer: | Whole Earth makes some different products. This one that is showing is 100% Erythritol, but they make another one called Baking Blend that is sugar/stevia. |
Question: | In what country is this product made |
Answer: | USA??? How do you know? In fact -- counry of origin is far from clear. Company's FAQ on this product says only: Whole Earth Erythritol is manufactured for Whole Earth Sweetener Company, LLC. http://wholeearthsweetener.com/faqs/#collapse-3035 Don't recall seeing any statement of origin on the product's packaging, last I checked. Nor will you see Made in USA in any of the product images here. Suppose, then, that Whole Earth Sweetener Co is purchasing all of their erythritol from a US company. That doesn't necessarily say anything about product origin. The erythritol could be made elsewhere, shipped here in bulk, and repackaged in the US. Whole Earth Sweetener Co may or may not be aware of this. That issue imo goes squarely to business practices. It's the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and not the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that governs Made in USA labelling. Foods and sweeteners have no source-of-origin labelling requirements: U.S. content must be disclosed on automobiles and textile, wool, and fur products. There’s no law that requires most other products sold in the U.S. to be marked or labeled Made in USA or have any other disclosure about their amount of U.S. content. However, manufacturers and marketers who choose to make claims about the amount of U.S. content in their products must comply with the FTC’s Made in USA policy. https://www.ftc.gov/tips-advice/business-center/guidance/complying-made-usa-standard As Whole Earth Sweetener Co does not publicly disclose the maker of their erythritol, consumers are -- purposefully to my mind -- left in the dark on this. One quick swipe with Occam's razor: Were this erythritol made in the USA, then why wouldn't Whole Earth Sweetener Co clearly say so -- both on their packaging and in their published FAQ? By keeping mum publicly, Whole Earth Sweetener Co is certainly staying on the right side of applicable FTC rules. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I am looking for splenda naturals in packets . cant find any where .can i order through amazon |
Answer: | Yes, you can order it from Amazon. I've seen listings for the 80 count and the 140 count packets. Thanks for your interest! |
Question: | how many packs are in this box? 400 or |
Answer: | On each box of Splenda˜ it says how many packets come in each box. The box on this page that I'm looking at now says 400 packets. I buy the 2,000 count box. Hope this helps. |
Question: | is the item durable |
Answer: | Durable? It is a sweetener. I use all the time and have for many years. Use just like regular sugar. |
Question: | How is this useful as a artificial sweetener? It has dextrose and maltodextrin both of which cause a sharp increase, or spike, in blood sugar level |
Answer: | I am a type two well regulated diabetic taking1000mg of metformin twice daily. When I started using artificial sweeteners, I made a 12 oz. ice tea using either one or two packets of Splenda, Nutra sweet, and sweet’n Low, then checked my glucose level after 20, 40, and 60 minutes. There was less than a 2 point (+or) change at each testing interval. A 2 point difference is well within the normal plus or minus expectations of a single test, so my verdict is, there is no difference at all, at least for me. I only use an artificial sweetener because I am diabetic. If I was not diabetic I would use honey or sugar and stay away from all chemical products. Unfortunately, I don’t have that luxury if I choose to want a sweet beverage. Anyone thinking about using an artificial sweetener should probably check with their doctor or at the very least check their glucose levels to see if they have any significant spikes in their glucose readings when using any artificial sweeteners. If you have to monitor your glucose, you already have a glucose meter. If you don’t you own a glucose meter, you can purchase a fairly reliable inexpensive glucose meter with lancets and test strips for less than $40. Good luck, I hope this helps. |

Product description
Sweetness is meant to be enjoyed. That's why Truvia created products meant to reduce sugar, not taste. The clean, sweet flavor contained in Truvia Natural Sweetener packets comes from nature in the form of the stevia leaf. Leaves don't dissolve well in beverages or baked goods, so we extract the sweetness from the stevia leaf. Because stevia leaf extract is 200x sweeter than sugar, we balance the sweetness with erythritol, a sweetener produced by fermentation. Erythritol is also found in fruits like grapes and pears. This gives you the white crystals you're used to without the calories. This 240-count carton has been specially created for serious Truvia fans who want to keep Truvia at home, and at work, or even with a few packets thrown in their bag for on-the-go sweetness.
- Zero-calorie sugar substitute made with stevia leaf extract, erythritol, and natural flavors
- Box contains 240 packets of Truvia natural stevia sweetener
- One packet provides the same sweetness as 2 teaspoons of sugar
- Non-GMO, Gluten-free, sugar-free, kosher, and suitable for people with diabetes
- Use in anything from your coffee, tea, fruit, cereal and yogurt to your favorite recipes

User questions & answers
Question: | Why did my packets come without the box? They just arrived loosely in a random postal box |
Answer: | Mine didn't come in a box like what is pictured but came in a white corrugated postal box but had stevia in the raw stamped all over it. Didn't matter to me how it came, I just wanted the packets. Wasn't worried about what type of container it came in. |
Question: | Are these 2g or 3g |
Answer: | Each packet is 1g. Hope this helps! |
Question: | It say |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | What are the fillers |
Answer: | Dextrose, which is another name for glucose, a simple sugar. There's literally more sugar in this zero calorie sweetener than there is stevia, but since each packet is only a gram, the added sugar is less than 2.5 calories, so they can round it to 0 on the nutrition facts. Pure stevia is very sweet so something has to be added to it in order to swap 1 to 1 with sugar. Because they used dextrose, this is basically just a slightly sweeter sugar packet that slips in just under the FDA rules to allow them to label it as zero calories. If you're looking for something with a lower glycemic index, try sucrose, a.k.a table sugar. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the difference |
Answer: | Hello, Pyure Organic Stevia All-Purpose Blend is our most versatile product. It can be used for all applications from cooking, baking, sprinkling on cereal or sweetening coffees and teas. It is organic, non-gmo and has the same taste and feel as sugar. Pyure All-Purpose is also a 2:1 ratio, so for every cup of sugar you can replace with 1/2 cup of All-Purpose Blend. This product blends organic erythritol and organic stevia together which are both excellent options for those with sugar sensitivities/diabetics. Pyure All-Purpose also comes in a few sizes: 16 ounce Pouch, 10 ounce flip-top tub, 80ct and 1000ct sachets. Pyure Bakeable Blend on the other hand is currently not organic or non-gmo, however we are working towards having it being organic and non-gmo this year. This product is more of a sugar-reducer since we recommend that for every cup of sugar, you replace half with the bakeable blend. For example if your recipe requires 1 cup of sugar you use 1/2 cup of sugar and 1/2 cup of the bakeable blend. This is to ensure for proper crispness and browning. The Bakeable Blend can also be used in a 1:1 ratio if you do not want to use sugar. Pyure Bakeable Blend is a blend of maltodextrin and organic stevia, and comes in a 10 ounce pouch. I hope that helps. Thanks for the question W. Swanton. |
Question: | item shown for $17 .86, is it 16oz. package |
Answer: | Yes, the item you are referring is one 16oz. package. However, I purchase the 2-pack offering (2 ea. 16 oz. packages) for around $25.00. |
Question: | Why is this misleadingly presented item not returnable when it contains hardly anything but erythritol and only trivial traces of stevia extract |
Answer: | Pure stevia is a powder that is super sweet and almost unusable. It is mixed with other sweeteners like erythritol as a carrying agent. I also have a small bottle of the pure powder. It comes with a 25mg scoop. 25mg is a really small amount. I use about 1/3 of the scoop to sweeten a mug of coffee. Any more than that and my coffee is too sweet. This doesn't sound so bad but just try and get that tiny bit of powder in the sccop. The powder is so fine that it clings together, coats the handle of the scoop, and as you tap the scoop against the side of your mug the powder on the scoop handle falls into your coffee also. Like I said the pure powder is not really a usable form of this item and it works much better when it is mixed with something that can be granulated. Don't let the ratios fool you. |
Question: | what is the ratio of erythritol and stevia |
Answer: | I include this comment by seller " ...lthough erythritol is the first ingredient by weight, stevia accounts for over 90% of the sweetness. Pyure Stevia Extract is roughly 350x sweeter than sugar, while erythritol is 70% as sweet as sugar. The reason that this blend is less concentrated is because this erythritol-stevia blend offers the bulk/volume that the 1 cup of sugar in your recipe would have required, without losing mass in your cakes or cookies. Erythritol is a non-nutritive carrying agent that the stevia is able to attach itself to, creating a sweetener that is easy to use, versatile and safe for those with sugar sensitivities. . . User questions & answers
Question: | Does this product contain any carbs? Thank you |
Answer: | The carbs are listed as 4g, which is the "sugar alcohols", which is the erythritol. However, NET-carbs of erythritol are zero (hence, it's also called "Zerose"), since it is excreted before it can enter the blood stream. |
Question: | What is the difference, if any, between the Lakanto Golden Sweetener and the Lakanto White Sweetener |
Answer: | I've found no difference in the taste between the golden and classic. For me they are both equally good replacement for sugar. When I use the golden for baking, the color comes out a little darker than if I use the classic. |
Question: | What is the percentage by volume of erythritol and what percentage is Luo Han Guo |
Answer: | This is almost pure erythritol, about 99%. Erythritol is about 70% as sweet as sugar. They add enough Monk Fruit to make it as sweet as sugar. Being 99% erythritol by weight would not be deceptive because Monk Fruit is 150 to 200 times as sweet as sugar. What is deceptive is that only 30% of the sweetness comes from Monk Fruit. Thus it should be call Erythritol enhanced with Monk Fruit, rather than Monk Fruit sweetener. Having stated this, other than potential digestive problems resulting from erythritol not being digestible, there is nothing wrong with a sweetener being 70% erythritol and 30% Monk Fruit by sweetness, except calling it Monk Fruit sweetener. If you want a granulated Monk Fruit sweetener with a higher percentage of Monk Fruit, you will have to look for one that is not a one for one replacement for sugar, or uses a less sweet base than erytritol. |
Question: | What are all the ingredients listed for this product |
Answer: | Lakanto isn't truely a "Monkfruit Sweetner", except as a marketing gimmick. It is basically the same thing as Truvia, except that it is substituting in a bit of monk fruit instead of stevia to increase the sweetness so that it is more like using sugar in proportion. This is made even more obvious by their marketing it as a 1:1 substitute for sugar, while distracting people with the (erroneous) note that actual monk fruit is 300x the sweetness of sugar. It would be more honest to market their product as an "Erythritol sweetner" with monk fruit extract, but that's not as marketable. |

Product description
Sweetness is meant to be enjoyed. That's why Truvia created products meant to reduce sugar, not taste. The clean, sweet flavor contained in Truvia Spoonable Natural Stevia Sweetener comes from nature in the form of the stevia leaf. This gives you the sweet white crystals you love, without the sugar calorie. The lid opens to allow for measuring spoons to scoop up the sweetness you need when cooking. Whether you spoon it, pour it, or sprinkle it, this Spoonable jar is great for measuring just the right amount of sweetness you crave.
- Zero-calorie sugar substitute made with stevia leaf extract, erythritol, and natural flavors
- Jar contains 80 servings of Truvia natural stevia sweetener at 3/4 teaspoon each
- 3/4 teaspoon provides the same sweetness as 2 teaspoons of sugar
- Gluten-free, sugar-free, kosher, and suitable for people with diabetes
- Spoon into anything from your coffee, tea, fruit, cereal and yogurt to your favorite recipes

Answer: | 1000 packets not that jar much better price than the 400 count I generally buy. |
Question: | Is Truvia keto friendly |
Answer: | The amount of stevia in this product is miniscule. They only add a bit so they can say this is made with stevia. User questions & answers
Question: | Is swerve a sugar alcohol? sometimes sugar alcohols can cause bloating. asking for a friend! thx |
Answer: | Sugar alcohols (also called polyols) are common ingredients in sugar substitutes; the erythritol in Swerve is one such sugar alcohol. Another common sugar alcohol is xylitol, which is quite different from erythritol and is not an ingredient in Swerve. |
Question: | is there any issue with baked goods being gritty? And other popular brand are used even with the baking sugar everything turns out gritty, bad texture |
Answer: | I have never felt any of the baked goods I have baked had a gritty texture. If you do think this happens in a certain baked good just use the powdered form of Swerve. I use Swerve in all my baked goods and have never had a problem. |
Question: | How does Swerve affect ketone levels |
Answer: | It should not affect ketone levels. Main ingredient is keto approved. |
Question: | what are the origins of the product? specifically, does it come from China |
Answer: | The back of the bag says, "Developed by & Manufactured for Swerve, LLC, New Orleans, LA." That is the only indication on the bag about the orientation of the product. I assume it means it was made in New Orleans. |

What Puts the Sweet in Swerve?
The secret to Swerve’s zero-calorie sweetness is a combination of erythritol and oligosaccharides.
If you’ve ever visited a brewery, you’ve gotten a peek into how fermentation works. Erythritol is made by fermenting glucose with Moniliella pollinis, a natural microorganism. It also naturally occurs in many fruits and vegetables like melons, grapes and asparagus. Erythritol is classified by the FDA as a zero-calorie, 4-carbon sugar alcohol that does not affect blood glucose.
Oligosaccharides are sweet, non-digestible carbohydrates sourced from select fruits and starchy root vegetables. Oligosaccharides are prebiotic fibers, so they’re not only tasty, but they can help stimulate beneficial bacteria in your gut.
Swerve: Our Passion for Health and Quality
Swerve is a small, independently owned company headquartered in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Swerve team, together with co-founder Andress Blackwell, developed Swerve as a tool for blood sugar stabilization. Helping educate consumers on the dangers of excessive sugar consumption has been a passion of Andress’ for 15+ years.
Swerve is committed to sourcing only the highest quality raw materials available.
Browns & Caramelizes
One of the unique functions of Swerve is its ability to brown and caramelize like sugar. Even when making Crème Brûlee, you can get a crunchy, tasty torched crust. Swerve also performs extremely well in meringues, allowing you to accomplish a stiff peak. Use Swerve just like you would sugar for recipes that require caramelizing.
Ketogenic Friendly
If you’re looking for a keto friendly sweetener, Swerve is your go-to. With zero net carbohydrates, Swerve does not impact blood sugar or insulin levels. You can use it easily in all of your low-carb baking and cooking recipes without the worry of a blood sugar spike. Just like fiber, when counting macros you can subtract any Swerve that is used in your recipe to get a true net carb count.
Measures Just Like Sugar
When it comes to baking and cooking, Swerve is the easiest and tastiest sugar replacement to use. Cup-for-cup, Swerve replaces sugar in all of your recipes. If you need a half cup of sugar; simply replace with a half cup of Swerve. And you won’t get any bitter aftertaste that is often associated with high intensity sweeteners like stevia and monkfruit.

User questions & answers
Question: | Where is it made |
Answer: | As of May 2, 2019, my just-delivered Anthony's Erythritol bag does not say from which plant the erythritol was derived (corn, sugar cane, or dead things in a swamp), nor does it state where the erythritol was produced (China, China, China or elsewhere in China). The bag states "batch tested and verified gluten free" and "non-GMO"; and "Manufactured for: Anthony's, 820 Thompson Unit 32, Glendale, CA 91201". |
Question: | Why is Anthony's erithritol half the price of its competitors? Is the quality lacking in some way shape or form? Additives |
Answer: | I order the 5 lb bag every month. It is not inferior in any way. As a matter of fact, I have tried a more expensive brand and went right back to Anthony's. I would imagine that they are able to keep the cost down because of the volume of sales and they have other sku's besides Erythritol and I have noticed cheaper than their competitors on almost everything they sell. I follow a Keto diet and not one time has my blood glucose risen. I try not to be a Brand snob but I am and use their products all the time! |
Question: | Is this stuff high-heat stable, that is, can it be used in canning |
Answer: | I know I bought it for cooking and baking because the other product didn't allow baking with it, You will need to adjust the amount that you use. I would try using sugar raito to erythritol and taste to make certain that its to your tasting. |
Question: | hi si this a good alternative for sugar in baking - is this what is used in sugar free cookies |
Answer: | In my opinion, this is one of the best sugar alternatives for baking. It is not quite as sweet as sugar. 1 cup of this is about as sweet as 2/3 cup sugar. It also has an almost mint like cooling effect that is more pronounced in some foods. I often combine it with stevia extract because I find it gives it the added sweetness without making the cooling effect more pronounced.Splenda is also a good option for sugar free baking, but it is not as natural as erythritol and stevia. |
