User questions & answers
Question: | Do you have to have a cellphone to use this |
Answer: | It is waterproof. I’ve swam with it in a pool and in the ocean (I was a little nervous about that, but no problems at all). |
Question: | Hello when will this watch be coming out? i know i read 5 to 6 weeks, but can you please provide a real date. i want it before april 1st |
Answer: | Yes it does, it also tracks elevation gain while cycling |
Question: | Does it display your current UTM coordinates |
Answer: | I have tiny wrists! The 235 face literally goes past the width of my wrist. The 35 is a nice fit. Bigger than what I'm use to wearing on my wrist in general but still looks good! |
Question: | How accurate is the wrist-based heart rate monitor for the fenix line of watches compared to using a chest strap |
Answer: | I am looking at these two watches as well. I just went to my local running store today to talk to them about the 235 vs the 35 and they basically told me that they are the same watch except for thesefew differences.... the 235 has a color screen, longer battery life, and a few more running options like race pace estimating, V02 Max estimator, etc. If you go to the Garmin site and do the compare feature you can get a pretty good look at the differences. I also downloaded the manuals for both. I'm going to go with the 35. The extra features the 235 has are super nice but I don't think they are personally necessary for me. I run 5K's, half-marathons, and full-marathons and the 35 looks like it will be sufficient for me. Also, i'm a 34 year old female and the 234 looked HUGE on my wrist! |
Product features
Fenix 5
Outstanding Readability on the Run
A bright, high-resolution, full-color Garmin Chroma Display with LED backlighting assures great readability in all ambient conditions. Transflective technology that reflects and transmits light at the same time enables the watch face to become even more readable under intense sunlight. Sapphire editions feature a scratch-resistant sapphire lens and are also Wi-Fi-enabled so your watch can connect to your wireless network and automatically send activity uploads for sharing on Garmin Connect.
Wrist-based Heart Rate
On your wrist, Elevate wrist heart rate technology lets you monitor your heart rate without wearing a chest strap. In addition to counting steps and monitoring sleep, the watch uses heart rate to provide calories burned information and quantify the intensity of your fitness activities.
Match Your Style with Interchangeable Watchbands
A selection of QuickFit bands in your choice of premium leather, metal or silicone makes it easy to mix and match styles to go with any sport or activity. No tools are required to make the transformation. Just swap, click and go.
Advanced Performance Metrics
Every Fenix 5 watch is packed with sophisticated training features to help monitor your form and performance. Enhanced readouts for Training Status and Training Effect show aerobic and anaerobic benefits of your workout – so you can see how your workouts are paying off and even compare results with your peers. The VO2 max estimator crunches data, including your running speed, beats per minute and heart rate variability, to estimate the maximum volume of oxygen you can consume per minute. And other fitness metrics include recovery advisor with a recovery timer and recovery check, plus a race predictor that estimates your ideal finish time based on your current VO2 max number.
Advanced Running Dynamics
Now you can go further with your running data. Garmin training features that tap into extended physiological metrics and advanced running dynamics can help improve your form and overall performance. These include: Performance condition, Lactate threshold, Cadence, Stride length.
Want more data?
By pairing your watch with a compatible heart rate chest strap such as the HRM-Run, you can access these additional Fenix 5 metrics: Vertical oscillation and ratio, Gound contact time and balance, Stress score.
Swim Profiles, Skiing, Paddle Sports, Golf and More
Beyond their running functions, Fenix 5 watches also offer special feature sets to help with swim training, skiing, golfing and paddle sports, including stand-up paddle boarding and rowing. For swimmers, the device tracks your distance, pace, stroke count and more. Ski/Board mode puts speed, distance, vertical drop and an automatic run counter (with Auto Pause for the lift line) and more at your fingertips. The feature set for paddle sports includes stroke count, stroke rate and even distance per stroke. Golf mode gives you yardage to the front, back and middle of the green for any single course you’ve downloaded from Garmin Connect – and also adds enhancements such as stat tracking (fairways hit, etc.), Green View, AutoShot detection and auto measure.
Custom Apps and Watch Faces
You can customize your Fenix 5 watch with free downloads from our Connect IQ store. Change your watch face, add data fields or get apps and widgets for information at a glance.

User questions & answers
Question: | It doesn't track HR in water, does anyone know if it is compatible with a swim strap or if it still counts calories |
Answer: | It believe it is compatible with a swim strap. If you are just playing around in a pool, it will still sample your HR. But once you have it in swim mode, it disables HR and you the HR graph for the day shows an empty spot for your swim workout. |
Question: | I know this has a built in heart rate sensor that monitors 24/7 and I like that. However, can you add a chest strap device to it for better readings |
Answer: | yes: manual says "... is also compatible with ANT+ chest heart rate monitors", it also says: "When both wrist-based heart rate and ANT+ heart rate data are available, your device uses ANt+ heart rate data" |
Question: | My wrist is about 5 1/2-5 3/4 inches, the distance from radius to ulna is about 1 1/2". Will this rest on my wrist properly |
Answer: | My wrist is the same exact size and it fits wondetfully. I was worried about it being too big but it doesnt flop around in the wind like I was expecting and I still have room to go tighter. |
Question: | Do each of you basically look at the product description to answer people's questions? That is, since none of you actually own this product yet |
Answer: | I only answer questions for products I purchase, and I answer to the best of my ability. If the product was a gift, I so state, but I respond. Amazon provides an excellent vehicle to disseminate customer experiences and information. Of course, just like most things these days, there are the few do otherwise. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How large is the display |
Answer: | This model has a 6.95" display. |
Question: | Is the smart phone traffic updates more reliable than the HD Traffic cable |
Answer: | I also find it very much more reliable. I have a Garmin with standard LMT and it often reports "no traffic" (problems) while I'm sitting in an 8-mile backup. This DriveSmart 61 is fast and accurate at least in the Seattle Metro area zones (as in from Olympia to Everett, WA. Because of this I'm replacing that one ( an 2699 LMT HD) with another DriveSmart 61. |
Question: | what is the release date |
Answer: | Shows all model's release dates: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/42240 |
Question: | Does this unit come with the traffic cable in the box or does it need to be purchased separately |
Answer: | Old question I know but felt it might be needed to clarify, this GPS can work with the app or the GPS cable. The difference in the two is accuracy and range, the app will get a larger more accurate view of traffic by looking at vehicles with a Garmin GPS inside than comparing these vehicles speed to the speed limit of the road. The cable works by radio a special band that is used to inform others of heavy traffic it can work pretty well but is reliant on the radio stations it can pick up (about 20-30 miles) and how accurate these reporting are (some rarely use this while others will but never remove the notice after it's been cleared). The app offers for features and gives you a larger look of traffic around you even hours away and in some chases re-route you early on so you can avoid heavy traffic if possible but this requires mobile data to use. The cable is less reliable and it's usefulness depends heavily on how well the town you are in/near reports this information and also poor range (a reported delay of 30 mins is no good (re-routing) if it takes you 10 mins of being in bumper to bumper traffic to come close enough in range to see the alert, this isn't frequent but can happen when going thru large cities (Kansas City, Saint Louis, Memphis, Atlanta) etc you get the point. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there a waterproof mode |
Answer: | I was unable to use these as they did not fix my fixture also. The product I bought that works in my fixture is a Sylvania bulb made for my fixture. They are a little shorter but the main thing is at the end of each bulb is a rounded rectangle. When putting in the fixture you need to rotate them and they snap in. I had some problems trying to find what worked in my fixture. I ended up going to a lighting place in my area with a sample bulb and they took care of it immeadiately. |
Question: | How does the always on mode affect the battery life? Can you still get to ~5 days on a charge |
Answer: | these bulbs are 12volt for rv fixtures |
Question: | Does the Garmin Venu´s display stay permanently on |
Answer: | It includes the prongs and measure 11 and 7/8's. Working well for under counter lighting. |
Question: | How is this watch different from Vivoactive 4 besides the display |
Answer: | I bought 6 F8T5 halophosphor long tubes for little over $1.00 each. They are made by "CH LIGHTING" using the rare earth halophosphor powder on their line of products. They advertise it as of stable quality, reliable, long life span and energy saving (8 W) It has a 3000K degree color (closer to tungsten than fluorescent) which is comfortable to eyes. A day-light tube has close to 5000K or 6000K degrees which it will be hard on my eyes. I think they are good bulbs, I am using one only at this time. However, I have a problem: after 2 months the bulb doesn't start completely at the first start and flickers a bit. I decided to turn the bulb OFF and ON again and the bulb works just fine, pleasant color and I leave it on even in the day-light. You know, living in Seattle is so dark in the winter that we are moving like zombies and you need to have some light on most of the time. I am using also an old light appliance I found in the basement 25 years ago so I don't know if this bulb has a slight issue or my old appliance/starter has an issue being old. I will test another bulb next month. But I encourage you to buy it, the price is right and I am sure it is going to work. What I like is that it doesn't create electromagnetic fields interfering with my portable radios or phone. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the difference between the sport version and the premium version of the Vivomove HR |
Answer: | No you don't, you can download your daily info to Garmin connect....this is a great watch |
Question: | Whatsapp message display and reply functionality |
Answer: | I ordered on January 13 and haven't heard anything about shipping. So I reached out to Garmin customer service today and they said it will be another 2-3 weeks for the 5S Sapphire. I'm not sure how folks are receiving theirs already if Garmin told me today that it hasn't been released yet...... I know that people who ordered the Fenix 5S (non Sapphire) already received them and they are even in stores already, so maybe that is what people have actually received. |
Question: | What notifications do you get? Can you respond |
Answer: | What are utm coordinates |
Question: | To verify, this can be worn while swimming |
Answer: | I have the Fenix 5S. The Wrist HR seems good when I am not active; like at my desk at work, sitting around the house, etc. But when I hit the gym and I am gasping for air, my wrist HR at times will record #'s in the 50's/60's. Impossible when I am working near my threshold. I don't have this issue when I put my chest strap on. This seems to be a consistent trend regardless of which Garmin wrist wearable I wear; I have several. |
