Product description

GSI Outdoors innovative hard-anodized construction brings premium performance to a camping classic. Made from durable, highly conductive cast aluminum, it heats up quickly and evenly and won’t rust, so it can go places where cast iron can’t. (Plus, it’s just one-third the weight, making it easier to take on the road and heft over the fire.) Dutch-oven cooking opens up a whole new world of backcountry culinary options, from eggs and biscuits to beef stew and home-baked bread.

Food just tastes better made over an open fire, but cooking it can be messy. This Dutch oven’s non-porous anodized surface means food won’t stick and the pot cleans up beautifully after you’re done. Best of all, there’s no need for time-consuming pre-seasoning. Dutch ovens cook with radiant heat, so they work best with charcoal or coals underneath as well as heaped on the lid. (They cook beautifully in your oven at home, too.) This lid has a lipped edge to hold coals in a ring.

The GSI Outdoors Dutch oven comes in three sizes, ten-, twelve-, and fourteen-inch. The ten-inch has no legs allowing it to nest in the larger ovens, while two larger sizes have three fixed legs to support them over the coals. All GSI Outdoors products are fully warrantied to the original owner against manufacturer's defects in materials and workmanship.

  • 10-inch model: Measures 11.2 x 10.8 x 3.7 inches, weighs 3 pounds, 11 ounces
  • 12-inch model: Measures 13.4 x 13 x 6.6 inches, weighs 6 pounds, 2 ounces
  • 14-inch model: Measures 15.8 x 15.7 x 7.5 inches, weighs 8 pounds

User questions & answers

Question: How many quarts of liquid does the 14 inch hold
Answer: The 14" oven holds 15-16 quarts, the 12" oven holds 8 quarts, and the 10" oven holds roughly 4 quarts.
Question: Does this over have legs, or is the picture correct
Answer: Hi Tim, the 10 inch does not have legs nor do legs come with it, you can get a Dutch Oven stand that will raise it off the ground or to use when stacking it on other Dutch Ovens. The 12 and 14" both have legs. Have a great day! Renee
Question: How deep is the 12". I know it says 6.6" but does that include legs and lid? I'm wondering how deep the pot itself is
Answer: I think that does include the legs which are about 1" long. The 10" will fit inside the 12"
Question: Does the 12" oven fit in the 14" oven? I know the 10" fits in the
Answer: I do not have a 14" aluminum dutch. I imagine it would fit (or stack) inside, but the 12" has legs which would damage the surface of the 14" as well as make it sit higher so the lids would not nestle inside. If you did decide to stack them for travel or storage, be sure to protect one from the other with something. I like to use cut-outs from inexpensive plastic cutting sheets, the kind that will roll up.

For all the cowboys, river rats, and scouts who still like to cook over an open fire, this sturdy Dutch oven is just the ticket. Made from durable, highly conductive cast aluminum, it heats up quickly and evenly and won’t rust, so it can go places where cast iron can’t. (Plus, it weighs a lot less.) Dutch-oven cooking opens up a whole new world of backcountry culinary options, from eggs and biscuits to beef stew and home-baked bread.

Dutch ovens cook with radiant heat, so they work best with charcoal or coals underneath as well as heaped on the lid. (They cook beautifully in your oven at home, too.) The lid has a lipped edge to hold coals in a ring. Traditional seasoning is required, but once that’s done, food won’t stick and the pot cleans up beautifully after you’re done.

The GSI Outdoors Dutch oven comes in two sizes – 10- and 12-inch – each of which cooks for four to ten people. The 10-inch has no legs, while the 12-inch has three fixed legs to support it over the coals. Should you buy both, they nest together nicely for storage.

User questions & answers

Question: Is the 6.2 quart the 14 inch dutch oven
Answer: 6qt dutch is usually sized as a 12" as a standard size. I bought 2 aluminum dutch ovens via Amazon.. one 10" with no legs & one 12" with legs. The 10" perfectly nests inside the 12".
Question: How do you season an aluminum dutch oven? Same as cast iron? And is aluminum safe to cook on
Answer: I haven't tried. I use it as a bread oven, at 500F, steam from the dough gives "oven spring", the rapid rise in the beginning of baking which is like steam jets in European bread ovens. This rapid rise makes a light artisan bread. Most of the world uses aluminum pans -- safe. My use requires no seasoning, try it: light coat of cooking oil, 400F for an hour and then turn oven off and leave it in until cool. The item has legs which is awkward in an inside oven. I cut off the legs with the new "oscillating tool" and a metal cutting blade.
Question: How deep is this dutch oven
Answer: Hi Margaret, they are just shy of 3" deep approx. 2 7/8. Have a great evening. Kindly, Renee
Question: Is your 10" dimension the inside or outside? If it is the outside what is the inside dimension? thanks
Answer: Inside rim to rim

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be used on a regular frying pan
Answer: I imagine you could set this in a frying pan and that would make it like a thin walled pot. The sides are at least 6 inches high. These are on the expensive side, as they are the size and height for a cast iron Dutch Oven and have a “lip” around the top for the lid to fit into. You could probably just use a foil pie tray from the grocery store if you are looking for a way to line a frying pan, which would be less expensive. Good luck.
Question: Can these liners be used in the 12" deep do
Answer: You can use these for the deep dutch oven if you first cut off the upper lip of the liner. I use regular scissors to do this.
Question: Are there 12 liners or 3? If 3, why does it say
Answer: (Disposable Foil Dutch Oven Liner, 12 Pack 12" 6Q liners.) Hey Colette. There are four packs with 3 foil liners in each pack... 12 total. A friend of mine just tried some parchment paper liners with a pineapple upside down cake and they worked very nicely too.
Question: Doesnt a liner eliminate the deep, rich flavor that comes from the actual contact of the food with the cast iron
Answer: Somewhat. You still have contact of moisture to the lid. But I'll take the trade-off because the cleanup is a breeze. I use it as a heating vessel, an oven, not a flavor enhancer. That's what spices are for. If you don't mind scraping the burnt food on the bottom and the remainder on the sides, and possibly re-seasoning the oven, then skip the liner.

User questions & answers

Question: Ok the description says it comes with a lift handle. However, I dont see a pic of it or anyone that has mentioned it. Does it come with a lift handle
Answer: The handle comes inside the oven, it is not a long handle but it is there and it works fine. I have baked three batches of parmesan bread in this since Sept when I got mine. It works fine.
Question: What is the depth of the pot itself? Is this really a 10-quart pot with an additional 2-quarts due to the depth of the lid
Answer: The pot itself is 5 inches deep, 13 inches wide at the top, 11 inches wide at the bottom. The lid is 1- 3/8 deep. I found the over is just under 11 quarts. I've cooked a large prime rib in one of my ovens and it came out being the best I ever cooked. I hope this helped you.
Question: Is this Item Made in China
Answer: Only Lodge (cast iron only, not enamel ) is made in USA, everything else, no matter the brand. is made in China
Question: What is the diameter and the depth of this dutch oven
Answer: The diameters & depth for the 12 quart Dutch Oven are: Top (Opening) Diameter is 12-3/8", Bottom Diameter is 11-1/4". The Depth of the Dutch Oven is: 5". The Depth of the Lid is 1-1/4". Hope this helps !!! Ron Stojek, Simpsonville, SC

Question: What is the top metal bar, near the handle, for
Answer: They should work very well for bread as they cover the entire inside of the 12” oven and the lid seals on the flange of the liner. I love those things.
Question: Is this item made in America or China
Answer: No, i dont think so. Do the crockpot liner bags not fit?
Question: Would anyone recommend purchasing this item for use at home? In other words, do you use it with your dutch oven, when taking it out of the oven
Answer: I don’t really know. You could probably put it in an oven. They are decently sturdy- kind of built like those disposable roasting pans you can by in the grocery store. I probably wouldn’t use them on a stove or open flame.
Question: Why do they tell you that is made in America and then when you get it it says made in China maybe that's just a printing error
Answer: Put it in a hot fire, lid off, once it is good and hot, take out and wire brush, wash, dry, and re-season.

100 years and still cooking. ..

Two historic events—the introduction of foundry seasoned cast iron cookware and the recent expansion of our foundry—represent dynamic examples of Lodge Manufacturing Company’s century-plus commitment to product innovation and investment in new equipment and technologies.

Seasoned cast iron propelled Lodge from the position of a regional manufacturer to the national stage, with Good Housekeeping presenting a “Good Buy” Award for the product enhancement. Our appearance on the national stage expanded throughout the first decade of the new century, with record sales leading Lodge to the largest expansion in our history.

While we are proud of our recent history, there is a backstory. So travel with us to the small town of South Pittsburg, Tennessee at the end of the 19th Century. Nestled at the base of the Appalachian Mountain’s Cumberland Plateau and on the banks of the Tennessee River, the town was abuzz with new opportunities.

In 1896 Joseph Lodge began a cast iron foundry, named in honor of his minister, Rev. Joseph Hayden Blacklock. Family owned, our origins were humble and our products varied, from stoves, to skillets and kitchen sinks.

As each decade passed, Lodge developed a business model to continually update and improve equipment and foundry practices. Work was labor intensive, with all of our cookware poured and cleaned by hand.

The 1950s saw the installation new molding machinery, mechanized sand delivery systems, the construction of a gas fired aluminum furnace to cast patterns for the production of sand mold impressions and a machine to clean castings.

When the introduction of new cookware metals and coatings increased competition in the 1960s, Lodge countered with a Disamatic automatic molding machine. Two years later, Lodge added an electric furnace to operate the Disamatic molding and pouring system, outpacing the capacity of the coke-fired cupola, at lower cost.

The Clean Water and Air Acts of 1970 led American companies to install new equipment to meet the pollution control laws. Lodge accepted the standards by replacing the old electric furnaces and adding a second Disamatic molding machine.

Not only did the updates meet the requirements of the Clean Air and Water legislation, by 1976 our automated processes produced as many molds in an hour as one man’s daily productivity 30 years earlier.

With the switch from antiquated electric furnaces to more efficient induction furnaces, 1991 proved to be a pivotal juncture in the green standards of Lodge Manufacturing Company. The use of magnetic energy to produce heat changed our status from a Large Quantity Generator of Hazardous Waste to a Small Quantity Generator, and we received the 1994 Tennessee Governor’s Award for Excellence in Hazardous Waste Reduction.

Today, Lodge Manufacturing Company maintains a zero hazardous waste stream foundry, earning accolades from the environmental and manufacturing communities.

Eleven years after in the introduction of seasoned cast iron cookware, Lodge broke ground for our foundry expansion. With completion of the first phase in the fall of 2014, the expansion includes a new melt system, an additional pouring/molding line and most importantly—new American jobs!

In more ways than he could have ever imagined, Joseph Lodge would not recognize the business he started over a century ago. Lodge continues to be family owned and we are the sole manufacturer of cast iron cookware in US, producing over 120 different foundry seasoned cast iron items for worldwide gourmet, outdoor and restaurant markets.

More importantly, Lodge Manufacturing Company is universally accepted as the world leader in the cast iron cookware category.

User questions & answers

Question: How much rice can be cooked in the 4.8 qrt
Answer: well, you could google it, but here ya go: a cup of dry uncooked rice weighs approximately 180 grams or .3968 pounds. there are four cups to a quart, so, 19.2 cups in 4.8 qts. so now you multiply 19.2 cups (volume) by 180 grams (weight) and you get 34,560 grams or 3.456 kg....convert kg to pounds multiply 3.456Kg by 2.2 lbs/kg....6.89 pounds of rice....more than you can eat in one sitting. Happy Cooking!!!
Question: I am confused with the dimensions. 14" x 14"?. Shouldn't the caldero be wide but not high. Please confirm dimensions
Answer: Hello; the caldero is very wide. it's big and the 14"x 14" has to be width to width. we the women in the family all have these caldero's. I gave mine to my daughter when i moved to TX. and i was happy to be able to find and purchase all 3. 4.8qt 6.9qt and the 11.6qt. I won't be giving these away any time soon. Good luck!

Answer: Yes! Definitely! I'm Dominican and our Puerto Rican bothers and us share our cuisine, and this is the "caldero de arroz" that we use for all our rices (white, arroz con Guandules, arroz con pollo, etc)..he will be satisfied and happy when you show him this!

User questions & answers

Question: I have a hard time believing it is made of cast iron, so what is it made of? Carbon steel flexes, cast iron would break
Answer: I'm not really sure. It looks like cast iron and feels like cast iron.
Question: Where is it made
Answer: It's made nicely, but for only one type of lids. If the lid only has to hoop or ring type top handle. It works good, but no way to use it on a button type handle that you would need a fork type end as well for more universal usages...
