10 best hand held radio
A handheld radio, often referred to as a handheld transceiver or HT, is a portable two-way radio communication device. These devices are commonly used in various applications, including radio scanning, security surveillance, and electronics, among others. Here are some key aspects of handheld radios:
Two-Way Communication: Handheld radios are designed for two-way communication, allowing users to both transmit and receive messages. They are widely used in industries such as public safety, security, construction, and amateur radio operation.
Frequency Range: Handheld radios operate on specific radio frequencies within the electromagnetic spectrum. The frequency range and capabilities of these radios can vary widely based on their intended use. Some models are designed for specific frequency bands, while others are more versatile and can cover a broader range of frequencies.
Radio Scanners: Handheld radios are often used as radio scanners to monitor and listen to various frequencies, including police, fire, emergency services, aviation, and more. Radio scanning enthusiasts use these devices to tune into different channels and stay informed about local events.
Security Surveillance: Handheld radios are also utilized for security and surveillance purposes. Security personnel, event staff, and law enforcement agencies commonly use them to communicate and coordinate their activities during events, emergencies, or routine operations.
Durability: Many handheld radios are designed to be rugged and durable, capable of withstanding harsh environmental conditions. They may be water-resistant or even submersible, making them suitable for outdoor use.
Battery Life: The battery life of handheld radios can vary significantly depending on the model and usage. Some radios are equipped with rechargeable batteries, while others use disposable batteries. Longer battery life is crucial for extended field operations.
Channels and Privacy Codes: Handheld radios often offer multiple channels and privacy codes to prevent interference from other users. Privacy codes allow users on the same channel to have private conversations without hearing other users' communications.
Accessories: Various accessories, such as headsets, microphones, and external antennas, are available to enhance the functionality and convenience of handheld radios. These accessories can be useful in different applications, including hands-free operation.
Licensing: In many countries, the use of handheld radios requires an appropriate license, especially if the device operates on specific frequency bands. Licensing ensures that users follow regulations and guidelines for responsible radio communication.
Emergency Communication: Handheld radios are valuable tools for emergency communication, especially in areas with limited cellular coverage. Search and rescue teams, hikers, and outdoor enthusiasts often carry handheld radios for safety and communication during emergencies.
It's important to choose a handheld radio that suits your specific needs and complies with local regulations. Additionally, understanding the features, range, and compatibility of the radio is crucial for effective communication in your chosen application.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use this radio as a scanner to listen to great lake freighter radio traffic |
Answer: | Yes, but if you only want to listen to voice traffic, a cheaper VHF, without DSC and GPS, will also work fine. Most are about $100 cheaper. This radio is suitable for recreational vessels involved in racing and coastal cruising. |
Question: | is this pair of radios? (2 radios for |
Answer: | Nope, it is a single radio. The two-way designation means it both receives and transmits, as apposed to, say, your car radio, which only receives. |
Question: | how far off shore will this radio work |
Answer: | Dennis, I have only used it in local waters but believe this VHF will work 15 to 20 miles away. If you go off shore (15 to 50 miles) you should rely on a VHF with large antenna etc. |
Question: | If I buy 3 of these radios can I talk and listen to others on the same channel |
Answer: | Recent FCC change makes it legal to talk from shore to a boat on the water. Must restrict oneself to marine related traffic. Effective January 2017, the use of portable VHF radio ashore is allowed, “so long as it is limited to enhancing the usefulness of marine VHF radios without negatively affecting maritime communications.” From BoatUS Magazine, April-May, 2017 |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you use a fire stick antenna with this unit |
Answer: | Jeff: Yes you can. You must use detach the flexible portable antenna, attach the provided vehicle 12 volt power source, and then attach the external antenna to the unit. |
Question: | are there handle bar mounts for the radio for motorcycle |
Answer: | The only one I've found was was from J@M model PACB-409-15. And they have a high opinion of it. I slightly modified an ARKON mount with the small pouch. I cut down the belt clip to fit in the bracket on dry days and use the pouch on wet days. |
Question: | There are many magnetic car mount antennas offered....can you suggest the cheapest yet most effective antenna to go with this unit |
Answer: | Remember your antenna is the most important part of your radio station.. Go with the Sirio Performer 5000, absolutely one of the best antennas you can get for the money.. You get what you pay for.. I've been a radio operator for over 50 years.. |
Question: | So with the adapter, you can plug the radio into something and it will use your car antenna or some other antenna and get further range? How far |
Answer: | Your antenna is the most important aspect in getting good range on your CB. For the beginner, your best bet is to buy the Midland 18-2442, Center Load Mag Mount Mobile CB Radio Antenna, available on Amazon for $19.99. It works perfectly with the Midland 75-822 unit. The magnetic base is strong enough to stay put until you remove it. It should be centered on the roof of your car, or truck cab, to radiate the best signal. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work with a Kore Aviation P |
Answer: | no |
Question: | Can I listen to 700mhz / 800mhz freqs |
Answer: | Its not a CB.... A CB operates in 11 meters, this is a 2 meter VHF radio |
Question: | Will this radio transmit on any ham frequencies outside the air / nav bands? Would like to communicate with wife on ground with her VX |
Answer: | No. This is an amateur band radio on 2 meters. It requires an FCC license (test required) to operate. It will not transmit nor receive on CB frequencies. |
Question: | What does it include in the package |
Answer: | This is a "Customer questions & answers" area, not the dealer/distributor question area, so don't expect an answer from Amazon or SARASOTA AVIONICS INTERNATIONAL. However, I can provide that the US AC adapter with US prongs, is capable of an input of 100-240V ~50-60Hz (Yaesu AC Adapter SAD-18B). So all you'd need to get to make it work is a simple, appropriate country adapter to plug the provided AC adapter into. |

User questions & answers
Question: | the truck i am currently driving is old and has no cig/12 volt power availible. can i charge this at night and use it without having it plugged in |
Answer: | No you have to plug it in charge it all the way up or wire a 12 v power adapter from the battery in your truck and you can charge it there |
Question: | Would this be a strong enough cb for listening to close (< 1 mile) truck drivers communicate while on the highway without an added antenna |
Answer: | No, it will not likely work. The metal body of the vehicle shields you from the signal of others. I take mine while I am driving on the Interstate. The only thing I have ever picked up is when the truckers are right next to me while I am sitting in traffic and not moving. When I am outside the vehicle, I pick stuff up within a mile or two. Most of the truckers are all using single sideband radios, and you won't be able to pick them up with this radio at all. |
Question: | what is the exact range this can be used if indoors like say im in a apartment my brother is like 2 miles away in a house will it go that far |
Answer: | There is NEVER an exact range for radio communication. The FCC rules require that CB's put out no more than 4 watts. I have accidentally talked to a guy in New Zealand from Ventura, CA and also from there to Florida. Other times you can't talk across town with the same radio. In your situation, if the two of you are in rooms with windows that face each other you can probably talk with two of these radios and no outside antenna. But put a small magnet mount outside your window, on a pizza pan (steel) and run a wire from your pizza pan to your radio and connect it to the outside of the antenna connection and now you have an ok base station antenna and ground plain, and will be able to talk much further. |
Question: | Has anyone used the uniden pro401hh? if so what do you think of it. what is the range of the device and do you think it would work in the woods |
Answer: | I have used this. In an open field was able to get .4 miles. I have not been in the woods yet. |
