User questions & answers

Question: do you have to use a computer? My husband wants a scanner to hear local fire, police, etc reports. Will this one do it
Answer: The SDS200 unit had better digital reception, more features and better circuitry than that older discontinued model you mention. The SDS200 can also receive Phase 2 digital systems, which the 197 can't do, and with optional firmware update the SDS200 can monitor DMR and ProVoice Digital, which the 197 can't do.

Answer: If that is 14218 kilohertz, the answer is no. If the frequency is 142.180 megahertz the answer is yes.
Question: Is this radio battery operated or can you plug into electricity
Answer: Yes, a telescoping antenna comes included.
Question: My metro area uses p25 phase ii for all trunked emergency dispatch. will this scanner be of any use or do i need a different unit
Answer: Yes! Your scanner’s Replay feature will instantly replay the transmissions you’ve just heard. You can set how long a period Replay records for instant playback. This period can range from 30 seconds to 4 minutes.

User questions & answers

Question: I know nothing about scanners in general. Is this a good scanner for beginners, and does it come with everything needed to set up and listen
Answer: In short, it is a good basic starter scanner. It will get you all analog transmissions from 27Mhz all the way up to 800Mhz.For a beginner scanner though, it can be a little tough to program manually. I learned through google searches and youtube videos. But if you want to just figure out what is going on around you, the scanner is preset to scanner different frequency stretches with the push of a button. So you can tell it to search just the standard police/fire/ems frequencies, or just the aircraft frequencies instead of manually programming.Oh, and yes this comes with enough accessories to permanently (wiring harness) or temporarily (cig lighter) set up in your car/truck or in your home as a base scanner (wall plug).Hope that helps..
Question: What is the difference between the Uniden Scanner model number BC355N and the Uniden Scanner with model number BC355C
Answer: The 335N is just an updated model. The BC355C is no longer in production by Uniden instead the newer BC355N is the current production model. Both scanners are essentially the same aside from very minor technical specifications, just one is currently in production and the other isn't.
Question: what type of external antenna connector does it take I want to use it in my RV and I have a car type push in plug does that work
Answer: This is a helpful tool, now in most area police use a different type of radio. They use a p25 phase 2 to help prevent people from hearing them. The scanner for that kinda of radio comes at a high price! I work in EMS, I use this radio when I’m not working to try to avoid any road that has a MVA. I also go to calls sometimes if man power is requested
Question: does the scanner recieve annalog or digital transmissions
Answer: Perhaps the a new model was released under the same part number, because there are many answer from 2013 stating this is not a digital scanner and that this is not a trunking scanner, but today in 2017 it clearly is. The description lists P25 Phase I and II as well as X-TDMA. P25 is the digital radio standard for public safety. X-TDMA is the digital standard for multimedia data over radio. There is also a lengthy list of trunking technologies that are supported by this model. Amazon should clean up and delete the old misleading answers as they no longer apply.

Question: Funciona para comunicacion en 2 vias
Answer: This model comes with a USB cable that can be used in conjunction with any 5 volt power adapter-- both wall and vehicle-- and most people find that their phone/tablet charger works well. Please note that while the batteries are charging within the unit the scanner cannot be powered on so I would recommend using an external charger for your rechargeable batteries.

Question: my local police have gone digital will this work
Answer: Yes, most if not all passenger and freight operations in the USA and Canada operate around 160 mhz so you can absolutely program the scanner and listen in. The EOT (End of Train) devices, broadcast over the 400 mhz range which you should be able to hear also. User questions & answers

Question: Does anyone believe this scanner is easier to use than the Whistler
Answer: The GPS receiver is installed but you need the plugin GPS antenna that must be purchased separate. (about $100.00)Any antenna can be used with the proper adapter. The stock antenna is SMA, but it comes with a SMA to BNC adapter. Adapters range in price from 5 - 10 dollars.
Question: Can I use an external battery such as used to recharge a iphone to power this? This is to be used at nascar race. Connected by usb

User questions & answers

Question: will it pickup viper
Answer: Yes, This Radio will receive unencrypted calls from the NC Viper system.
Question: Will this work with the new Des Moines Ia sytem
Answer: Not well. Des Moines is on the Iowa Statewide Interoperable Communications System (ISICS) which uses many simulcast sites. If you’re in range of two towers broadcasting the same frequency you will have issues. The SDS100 and 200 are the only current Uniden scanners to handle simulcast well.
Question: Is this model preprogamed
Answer: This uniden BCD996P2 Digital scanner is not preprogrammed, you have to program it your self, Note: it takes a little while to program ,but it can be done, I would recommend theses scanners that are already preprogrammed simply by entering your zip code and they are the Whistler WS1095 digital scanner - Uniden Home Patrol 2 scanner and the Uniden BCD 536HP. I Hope you find this answer helpful. Copsfan
Question: Can this 996P2 radio use the Uniden BC-GPSK Serial GPS Receiver for Scanner and Marine Products to get GPS input
Answer: I have the 996P2 with this GPS set but what is missing with Uniden is a Bios update as on MENU look into the GPS and on the current BIOS there is NO RANGE. I live in Raynham,Bristol, Massachusetts and why do I get , in my car a frequency of a city over 20 miles . I want to set the GPS only to 5 miles. You have to pressure Paul from Uniden to update the Bios that you may see in looking for Bios for the 996P2

User questions & answers

Question: Would this scanner work for a “multi-agency radio communications project 25 phase 1 trunked” system
Answer: I live seven miles from a SMALL town, live in a house with a metal roof and it works great.
Question: is this a digital scanner
Answer: See the answer from Ron below. I have the same questions. Make sure the scanner isn't defective. If it will not accept any programming at all, assuming you're doing it correctly, you may want to return it. I have this particular scanner and I found it easy to program, but I'm familiar with scanners so it was easy for me. There are some good videos online; google for "How to program the BC365CRS scanner" and you'll probably get some helpful videos. Sometimes these videos are better than the instructions that came with the scanner. If you know someone who is familiar with scanners, get their help in programming, using the scanner instructions. Proper programming requires following the instructions correctly and to the letter, which can sometimes be confusing. Not all scanner instructions are clear/understandable, especially if you're not familiar with scanners.
Question: can it scan
Answer: This is powered off of an included ac adaptor and can also take backup batteries
Question: What is the rear external antenna connector
Answer: We had to program the frequencies ourselves. Also we returned this item because we did not realize it was a basic analog scanner. It will not pick up digital or trunked systems. Most police/fire/state troopers have gone to digital and/or trunked systems. You might want to check your area first before purchasing. We learned the hard way!

User questions & answers

Question: I know this might sound stupid, but I am looking to get this for my Husband (a truck driver). What do sidebands do? When would you use this? Just wondering if I should get him this one or the 880... Thanks
Answer: If your husband wants or needs a radio capable of operating on sidebands, this is NOT radio for him. You would need to get the 980 model rather than this 880 model. Normally truckers operate on AM mode rather than sideband. However a few truckers who have Sideband capable radios will use sideband when they get further apart or can't get a good signal on AM. But the majority don't use sideband.
Question: can you use this CB in the house
Answer: Yes. You will require -1) An regulated power supply that converts AC electricity to DC. The voltage you want is a constant 13.8 VDC (not 12 volts, you won't get full power) and which can supply a minimum of 5 amps under load.2) Do NOT press the microphone button until all steps have been completed.3) You will need to mount an external CB antenna at least 9' above the roof line. If you use a mast, it must be guyed every 10' above the last (highest) physical attachement to the house.4) You will need to properly ground the antenna mast to a copper clad ground rod (between 4' and 10' long depending on soil conductivity for your location dry sand: bad: 10' / wet rich soil: excellent: 4')5) You will need to properly ground the chassis of the CB to the exact same point that the mast is grounded to on the grounding rod. This is the step that most radio noobies skip. DON'T skip it.6) It is highly suggested you purchase a ground shunt (static discharge) for your coax; and yes, connect it to the same exact spot on the grounding rod.7) Try and purchase the highest quality 50-ohm coax you can afford. If you can afford Timesmicrowave LMR-400, then that would be your best bet. Try not to use coax more then a few feet longer than you need, and beyond that always allow 2 extra feet for a 'drip loop' at the bottom just before where it comes into the house.8) Wrap the PL-259 connectors with weatherproof coax tape to seal the connections from rain/snow/condensation. If you want to overkill it, then put a shrink wrap tube over the top of the tape.9) Secure the coax GENTLY but securely every 3 feet along the mast. A UV-resistant piece of flexable plastic 2" wide by 6"long wrapped around the coax and the mast (all at once) and secured with UV-resistant tie-wraps would be a good idea.10) Calibrate your 980SSB's internal SWR meter and then check you antenna system SWR to make sure it is less than 1.5:1 (mine is 1.0:1, a perfect match). If required (never use beyond 3:1), 'trim' your antenna to get a better SWR (most don't require trimming).11) Sometimes a CB antenna will require a physical ground plane at the antenna base; but most of the times in a base setup, not.12) Re-read your Uniden BC980SSB manual to make sure nothing has been missed in your setup.
Question: Hello. I am looking to buy this for my husbands 1998 Jeep cherokee XJ..Will this be good for that? And also what other parts are needed
Answer: Hello, yes this is a nice radio that would be fine in that vehicle. With this said, along with the radio you will need the following items:Cigarette lighter 2 wire power cord, magnet mount antenna. These items can be bought on Amazon or you can get them at a truck stop.I recommend Amazon because of a lower price and free shipping and the secret nature of being able to hide your purchase if it's a surprise gift.Truck spec is a cheap brand for the 2 wire power cord and for the antenna I recommend one of the following: K40, Wilson 1000 or the Wilson 3000 magnet mount antennas. Those come with the antenna wire already attached to the magnet and all he would do is run the wire through the hatch or the rear door after mounting the antenna on the roof. It's really easy to do. Just hide the wire under floor mats and beside the seat up to the dashboard to the CB.Now if you are looking for a better radio and easier to use right out of the box, I recommend Galaxy or Connex as these are rock solid and all the knobs are right there on the front of the radio unlike this modern radio with most of the adjustments in menus which made me feel like I had to relearn everything over again. I prefer direct access. This Uniden Bearcat 980 has an annoying beep sound every time you change the channel. Those two other brands of radios I mentioned are more expensive but are what the big boys in my industry use in their big rigs. You should be able to compare the features of the Bearcat 980 with those of a Galaxy or a Connex CB and go on that alone to match up what you want. I read the other two answers you got, Why did they even bother...I hope this helps and as always just ask if you need more info.
Question: I asked if it was 100% new or a refurb and you deleted the question. I am now processing a refund/return on this item. Thanks for being a legit seller
Answer: I ordered and paid for a NEW Bearcat 980SSB from gadget-town and got a refurb/used item. If you check that seller's 100% positive reviews you will find others have had the same experience, yet Amazon has crossed out those reviews and returned the seller's 100% positive rating. Take that as you will.

User questions & answers

Question: Will it work on a radio shack pro 97 handheld? scanner
Answer: As long as your scanner has a bnc type connecter it will work! If not, you will need an adapter!
Question: Does this work with 27 MHz Handheld cb
Answer: No, it could work on 50 to 225 MHz on a transmitter side, but it won't work on the UHF transceiver after I've tried to tune that antenna on my antenna analyzer. But it will work good on 20 to 1300 MHz on a receiver, or a scanner, or a shortwave receiver pick up on WWV on 10 MHz and 15 MHz with a strong signal condition, or shortwave broadcast radio stations with a strong signal condition, and those local AM broadcast radio stations with a strong signal.
Question: Will this work on a midland
Answer: Midland 75-822 is a CB radio. For Americans that's 4w AM around 27 to 28mhz. That's in the advertised range, but you'd want to be careful to tune it (and then never change the length!) before use to avoid burning out the radio.
Question: How far can it reach on a bc75xlt
Answer: I don't understand your question. Are you asking about how long the antenna is or how much it will improve the performance of the radio? If it's the range of the radio, it will do better on VHF high band than the standard rubber antenna if the rod is extended to about 18". It's generally not a matter of range but improving the signal strength and readability of existing weak signals. If the station you want is in the VHF low band (30-50 MHz) or CB (27 MHz), this antenna will make a substantial improvement over a standard rubber antenna. Range is dependent on too many factors to make a definite statement about improvement but, in most cases, you can expect a 25-30% improvement in range. A consideration with a small handheld like the BC75XLT is that this antenna is quite heavy because it has so many sections. It's likely the radio would easily topple over while sitting on a flat surface. It's about four feet long fully extended.

User questions & answers

Question: I live within 1 mile of a state line . does the zip code programming function for a specified radius and automatically program nxdn services
Answer: It did NOT cover the NXDN system in my area. I found the TRX2 very complex & difficult to use..However, I should also mention that all voice commuications on the NXDN system in my area are encrypted which the TRX2 folks admit is not 'scannable'' by their product..So that may have been the problem in my case but I still found the TRX2 very hard to use using either the zip code or conventional method..
Question: Provoice, edacs and ltr capable? or equipped
Answer: Edacs and Ltr yes. Provice I don't think so.
Question: does it have a dc acdapter
Answer: It comes with both AC ( house current) and DC ( 12V automotive) power cables.
Question: Do the updates run on Macs
Answer: Sorry the programming software won't run on Macs.
