13 best tec phono pre amps

Tec phono preamps, also known as phono preamplifiers or phono stages, are essential components in audio systems, particularly for vinyl record enthusiasts. These devices play a crucial role in amplifying the low-level signals generated by turntable cartridges and preparing them for further amplification in a stereo system. Here's what you need to know about tec phono preamps:

  1. Signal Amplification: Tec phono preamps are designed to boost the weak electrical signals produced by turntable cartridges when a vinyl record is played. These signals are typically much lower in amplitude compared to other audio sources like CD players or streaming devices.

  2. Equalization: In addition to amplification, phono preamps also apply RIAA equalization. This is a specific equalization curve used in vinyl record recording and playback to compensate for the frequency response limitations of the medium. The phono preamp reverses this equalization curve during playback to provide a flat frequency response.

  3. MM and MC Compatibility: Tec phono preamps are often built to accommodate both Moving Magnet (MM) and Moving Coil (MC) cartridges. These two types of cartridges have different electrical characteristics, so the preamp needs to be adjustable to work with either.

  4. Input and Output Connections: Phono preamps have RCA input and output connections. The input is where the turntable is connected, and the output is connected to an amplifier or receiver. Some models may also have additional connectivity options, such as USB for digitizing vinyl records or headphone outputs.

  5. Grounding: Many turntables and preamps include a grounding terminal to reduce the risk of unwanted noise, known as hum. Proper grounding helps maintain a clean and noise-free signal.

  6. Compatibility with Other Audio Equipment: Tec phono preamps are often used in conjunction with amplifiers, receivers, and integrated stereo systems to complete a vinyl playback setup. They can be standalone units or built into integrated amplifiers and receivers.

  7. Adjustability: Some tec phono preamps offer adjustment options, allowing users to fine-tune settings like gain and capacitance to match the specific characteristics of their cartridge and achieve optimal sound quality.

  8. Enhanced Sound Quality: The role of the phono preamp is crucial in ensuring that vinyl records sound as they should. A quality phono preamp can significantly improve the sound quality of vinyl playback, providing a warm, rich, and detailed audio experience.

  9. Digitization: Some phono preamps come equipped with analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) and USB ports, allowing users to digitize their vinyl records and transfer them to a computer or digital audio formats.

Tec phono preamps are vital components for vinyl enthusiasts and audiophiles who want to enjoy the unique sound of vinyl records. They ensure that the delicate signals from turntable cartridges are properly amplified and equalized, resulting in a high-quality audio experience that faithfully reproduces the analog warmth and detail of vinyl recordings.

User questions & answers

Question: What if my reciever has a phono conection, would I still need a preamp
Answer: Frequency response drops off sharply below 20Hz; down 10dB at 10Hz. 20dB at 6Hz.
Question: I plan on connecting the TT and CD player to the pre-amp and the out to the CD receiver jacks. Would the aux path be amplified or just pass-through
Answer: Probably not hissing. It will help with 60hz or 120hz ground loop buzz & hum.
Question: i need to connect my turntable to speakers can I use this to do it
Answer: It might. I have mine hooked up to the outbound line on a 4 way switcher and it does the trick. But it depends on what is causing the buzzing in your situation. If an external source is causing the disturbance then it might reduce it for you somewhat. Try unplugging all electronics nearby and let them sit for 15 seconds then plug back in, that eliminates the buildup of static electricity on the circuit boards. No guarantees but it’s worth a try to solve the interference
Question: Do all turntables require a preamp
Answer: Yes will work on 2018 Tacoma

User questions & answers

Question: Can a computer line out into a DAC run into the Aux input
Answer: You should not need a pre-amp if you have a PHONO input on your receiver. That input is usually amped to RIAA specs and will play your signal from your magnetic cartridge. If you find that the sound output from your turntable is very low, you will need a pre-amp. If your turntable has one built-in, turn it on. Otherwise just buy a stand alone pre-amp and hook your turntable into it and then the pre-amp into your receiver.
Question: what is the highest resolution this unit can input
Answer: The AUX is an isolated line level pass through. The pre-amp is only connected to TT to raise the weak phono cartridge signal to a line level signal. This set-up reduces the number of inputs required on your reciever or power amp since many do not offer a phono input anymore.
Question: Will this work to place in between my turntable (with no phono pre) and my krk rokit 5 powered monitor speakers? And can I use this to control volume
Answer: A PREamp is just that, it raises the signal coming from a device like your turntable. You still need a main AMP to connect the preamp to. The main AMP connects to the speakers. If you have powered speakers like computer speakers or a sound bar you would connect this to the turntable and the powered speakers or sound bar as they have an amp in them. If they are plain old speakers you need a main amp which will probably have a preamp in it for turntables. You would need to read the specs.
Question: When i play my lp's can i hear sound through the computer or do i need it hooked into a reciever
Answer: David, depends, if you are plugging into an amplifier/receiver w/o a phono preamp then the answer is yes. If the amp does not have a specific phono plug in then the answer is yes, you will need a preamp. Also, my turntable is from 1978 and does not have a built in preamp, I hope this helps.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this thing have an/off switch or do you need to plug/unplug everytime you use it
Answer: no switch. You can plug/unplug, I leave it plugged in all the time.
Question: Unit works fine for awhile and then starts outputting static, even with no input connected. I've tried it with several amps with the same results
Answer: Most likely people who are having noise problems it is because of ground loop isolation problem. If you have a ground loop isolation problem grounding the preamp box is unlikely to help. Without getting technical, what you want to buy is a ground loop isolator or a humm eliminator; both the ground loop isolator and humm eliminator tackles the cause of the noise at the fundamental source of the problem, depending on your audio setup, one maybe easier to use than the other. To use the ground loop isolator or the humm eliminator they generally come with instructions, or you can google this topic. If the noise in your audio system isn't fixed by using this solution the first time, try putting the ground loop isolator and humm eliminator at various points in your audio system. Also you can talk to audio people and get advice about how to fix ground loop problems from people who setup big audio systems, for concerts and such; if you talk to the average electronic garage shop audio enthusiast you are likely to get bad advice, i.e., meaningless explanations. Also caution must be used when Googling this topic, much of the discussion, advice and explanation on this topic is bogus, you can get a general correct feel of this topic if you read a number of explanations. Also one more thing that can cause a "popping noise" is that you have too much gain, this is a phono amp and the gain is huge, it takes a 3mV and makes it 2Vp-p this is a gain of around 100 to 200, if you gain up the audio signal too much then the signal out of your amplifier runs out of head room and clips, this can cause a popping sound, essentially you have too much gain. If this is occurring you need to either buy a preamp with less gain or attenuate the signal before it gets to the preamp. If this is a problem, too much gain, you can buy preamps with gain control.
Question: My turntable has very quiet output. Will this device help boost the volume
Answer: Yes, indeed. If your need was like mine (no built-in pre-amp on the turntable and no specifically dedicated phono input on your amplifier) you will find this unit to be the perfect solution to needed amplification of the turntable's output. Don't forget to hook up the ground wire as directed or you may wind up putting unwanted noise into the audio.
Question: My amp DOES have a Phono Input, but my cartridges are low output. Can I use this to boost the signal using the Phono Input to reduce audible hiss
Answer: No, you can't. This is a phono preamp with RIAA playback equalization that amplifies the signal about 100 times, so it essentially does what your built-in phono preamp does. The output signal from the separate preamp is equalized to a nominally "flat" frequency response and the amplified signal level will overload and probably damage your built-in phono preamp. Plug it into any other stereo line input on your system (AUX, CD, DVD, TAPE, VCR, etc.), but NOT the PHONO input! If you need higher signal gain, maybe look at phono preamps from ART or TCC that have output level controls. If you use moving-coil (MC) cartridges, you need a preamp specifically designed for them...they require at least 55 dB (over 500 times) signal gain vs. about 40 dB (100 times) for moving-magnet (MM) cartridges. Noise becomes a critical issue with MC cartridges because of their extremely low signal output, so good-quality cables and good turntable grounding are essential.

User questions & answers

Question: Sorry can’t reply, I plan on switching setting from line to phono will that work
Answer: Thanks for your question. The output from the Solo should be connected the a line input (not a phono input) on your receiver or integrated amplifier. World Wide Stereo is 41 years old and a proud authorized Cambridge Audio dealer.
Question: Can I run a cable from this into a Sonos 5 if I get an red white converter cable for the jack
Answer: Hello, Thank you for contacting Cambridge Audio. You should be able to run the Solo preamplifier's output into the 3.5mm jack of the Sonos 5 to playback records through this speaker. The type of cable needed would be a stereo RCA connection that changes to a 3.5mm connection, and this is often described as an RCA to 3.5mm "Y" splitter. Best Regards, Cambridge Audio USA

  • This electronic preamplifier stands up to the test and will provide you with serious sound performance. The PP999 is perfect for bringing your studio equipment's phono-level output to a more suitable and manageable line-level output. It'll take your audio signal, amplify its strength and prepare it for further processing by your receiver or amplifier. Preamps technically provide voltage gain to your desired equipment and are key to assisting the signal source. The ultra-low noise audio conditioning circuitry allows the preamp to boost audio to levels that are more manageable for various types of audio equipment. You'll find it easier to adjust the recording level volumes of different sources and instruments alike. You should position your preamp close to the source to reduce unwanted noise and interference. Preamps can sometimes come built into the stereo equipment, but if that's not the case, the PP999 is an easy install, wise choice and great addition to any musician or producer. Take your sounds and audio production skills to the next level with the PP999 Preamplifier.

    User questions & answers

Question: If I have a record player without a Preamp, will this help me with hooking it up to a Sonos
Answer: You can hook it up to anything with a red and white connection. Or if you get the rca to 3.5mm jack then you can hook it up to anything with an input slot. I used this on my realistic lab 440 which doesn't have a preamp. Once I connected the ground from my turntable into the ground slot on this amp, my music sounded loud and clear.
    Question: mp
Answer: Turntables (with typical magnetic cartridges) have very low signal output (a few thousandths of a volt). Records have the bass reduced to provide enough room on the surface for the recorded grooves, and the treble boosted to reduce the surface noise level when played back. A phono preamplifier performs two jobs: - It boosts the small signal from the turntable by about 50 to 100 times (producing a "line level" signal) so it can be used by typical receivers or amplifiers.- It also boosts the bass and reduces the treble according to an industry standard (the RIAA equalization curve) to restore the signal from the record to its original frequency response. The Pyle PP999 is just an inexpensive phono preamp, nothing special. Phono preamps can range from $20 on up to whatever you're willing to pay for ultra-high quality. Some manufacturers make "USB" phono preamps that have A/D (analog-to-digital) converters built in and connect to a computer's USB port. Most of these provide "CD quality" conversion (16-bits at 44kHz or 48kHz). These may be adequate for digitizing your vinyl, but many computer sound systems can provide up to 24-bit, 192 kHz conversion depending on the software you use (much higher quality), by connecting the preamp output to the computer's line input. Don't just convert directly to MP3 files...you'll lose too much detail compared to the original vinyl sound. It takes almost no time to make an MP3 copy of a high bit-rate WAV or FLAC (lossless) file, but it'll take you an hour to make ANY digital copy of an LP, so do it the best you can the first time!
Question: So this is a stupid question, I plug my RCA wires coming from my turntable into the Amp. But where do I plug the speaker wires into on the Amp
Answer: TurnTable==>PreAmp==>Receiver/Amplifier==>SpeakersThe 'Pyle PP999' is the "Preamp". The Turntable is plugged into the PP999 INPUT and the PP999 OUTPUT plugs directly into any (non Phono) INPUT on the receiver. Your Receiver allows you to switch between different music-sources, contains the primary-amplifier and distributes the final sound out to the speakers(and subwoofer). The Receiver should have multiple inputs for receiving signals from eg. CD, Tape, VCR, etc. In my experience those labels are for convenience and interchangeable with the exception of a "Phono" input. NOTE: If the receiver has a "Phono" input then there's a built-in preamp. If your using an external preamp (Pyle PP999) do NOT plug it into the Receiver's 'Phono' input, it could cause damage. I plug the preamp for the turntable into the Receiver's 'VCR' or 'TV' inputs.
Question: I have the Pyle turntable and Pyle stereo but they don't work together--VERY low sound--so is this the missing piece
Answer: Turntables (with typical magnetic cartridges) have very low signal output (a few thousandths of a volt). Records have the bass reduced to provide enough room on the surface for the recorded grooves, and the treble boosted to reduce the surface noise level when played back. Most modern receivers DO NOT have the right inputs to deal with this signal (no "phono" input). User questions & answers

Question: Has anyone used this successfully with a class d amplifier like the smsl ad
Answer: Had to look this amp up, well it depends what you are using it for to boost your headphones using the 3.5 mm headphone jack but you would have to convert the RCA output jacks to 3.5 mm to feed your headphones. If you are using it to boost the line in to the ad18 you would have to convert the RCA jacks also and use the aux 3.5 mm input only good for 2 channel analog stereo it won't work passing digital through it
Question: I have a sony ps-6 turntable and a sony ss amplifier ta-2650, could this phono preamplificator works fine if i connect to any of the aux inputs
Answer: I will share my experience. I have a Technics SL-Q200 and I ordered a ground cable. The Little Bear comes with its own ground cables that looks like roach clips on both ends. I used the Technics ground cable and roached clipped it. I added a small screw in the hole of the Little Bear ground and roach clipped it and that solves the ground. You can replace the left tube with a Jan GE 5654W tube for better articulation and clean robust sound - two 6J1 was a bit noisy. It will still need the 6J1 tube provided to operate on the right slot from front. It should work fine connecting to aux input but be mindful of the grounding required.
Question: It lookes like it has a aux and phono switch. does this mean i can use it with cd player also
Answer: Most likely it would work as long it is a decent player and isn't prone to external noise like household appliances, that noise will get amplified along with the desired sound
Question: Does it introduce much noise into the music
Answer: This little preamplifier does not introduce noise, with better tube you can reach a smooth sound. A nice equipment at a nice cost.

    User questions & answers

Question: Hi, does AC adapter support 240V supply? Thanks
Answer: Yes, it has universal 110-220 power adapter
Question: I have a at lp-60 record player that is connected into my sonos system via the sonos:connect, but the volume is extremely low. will this resolve it
Answer: If its the Audio Technia LP-60, it has its own preamp, just make sure its set to "line level" not phono. You shouldn't need this preamp, but it will sound better than the built in one on the turntable.
Question: I have a vintage turntable connected directly to a set of powered bookshelf speakers, but the volume is very low.will the phono box e preamp fix this
Answer: So do you have the ground wire connected to anything? What connection to the speakers? Unless the speakers have a PHONO input I'd recommend that you use a preamp both to ground the turntable and it will boost the power for sound.
Question: Does this unit ship with US power supply
Answer: no, mine shipped w/ a European power supply, had to send it back.

    User questions & answers

Question: What is the input capacitance of the phono preamp section
Answer: It's a common belief among audiophiles that you can never have too much available current, and that adding more provides an audible improvement in fidelity. We have no position on this, but our experience has been that larger adaptors are more immune to power line disruptions like lightning that can shorten adaptor life.
Question: Can you use 2 of the inputs to hook up 2 turntables
Answer: Any analog line level source can be connected to AUX; this includes laptop headphone outputs and PC sound card (analog) line outs. We stongly suggest you NOT do this if the same computer's USB input is connected to the TC-756's USB output as (depending on the AUX/PHONO switch setting and computer settings chosen) a feedback loop of sorts (seriously delayed, but still feedback) can be created where the computer is attempting to record its own (monitor) output.
Question: I'm experiencing a popping or cracking sound even when the turntable not being used. what can I do to eliminate the problem? I have a denon 1913 AVR
Answer: 44.1/48kHz, 16 bit; same as that found on CDs. Given the limited dynamic range and frequency response of the analog media (records) being converted, higher resolutions would eat up large amounts of digital storage space and add minimal utility. They are unneeded by the majority of likely TC-756USB buyers; those looking to make digital conversion as simple and straightforward as possible. Those who believe ADC resolution can never be high enough are unlikely to be satisfied with this approach and will choose to invest in more sophisticated and multi-featured ADC products providing S/PDIF as well as USB output.
Question: Can this preamp mix two of the AUX inputs together so that they both output at the same time? Can you select two inputs at once
Answer: Yes and yes. How loud things get depends on the input sensitivity of your powered speakers. The specs on the Rokit 5_G3 webpage do not include this number, and we found no specs at all in the PDF manual.
