12 best wifi modem

A WiFi modem, also known as a modem-router combo or gateway, is a networking device that combines the functionality of a modem and a router into a single unit. It plays a crucial role in providing internet connectivity to homes and businesses. Here are some key points about WiFi modems:

  1. Modem and Router Combo: A WiFi modem integrates both a modem and a router into one device. The modem connects to your internet service provider (ISP) and converts the incoming signal (usually from a coaxial cable or DSL line) into a format that your devices can use. The router then distributes the internet connection wirelessly via WiFi or through wired Ethernet connections.

  2. ISP Compatibility: When choosing a WiFi modem, it's essential to ensure that it is compatible with your specific ISP. Different ISPs may use different technologies and standards, such as cable, DSL, or fiber optic, and they may have specific requirements for the modem you use.

  3. Wireless Standards: WiFi modems support various wireless standards, such as 802.11ac or 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6). The choice of standard affects the speed and range of your wireless network, so it's important to select a modem-router combo that meets your performance needs.

  4. Speed and Performance: The speed of your internet connection is often described in terms of download and upload speeds (e.g., 100 Mbps down, 10 Mbps up). Make sure your WiFi modem can support the maximum speed offered by your ISP to get the best performance.

  5. Coverage: The range and coverage of your WiFi network depend on the router's capabilities. Some WiFi modems have multiple antennas and advanced features to provide extended coverage throughout your home or business.

  6. Security: WiFi modems typically include security features like WPA3 encryption, firewall protection, and guest network support. Ensuring your WiFi network is secure is essential to protect your data and devices.

  7. Ports: Look for a WiFi modem with an adequate number of Ethernet ports if you have wired devices that need to be connected directly to the network. Additionally, USB ports can be handy for sharing printers or external storage devices on your network.

  8. Dual-Band or Tri-Band: Some WiFi modems support dual-band or tri-band operation. These devices can broadcast on multiple frequency bands simultaneously, reducing interference and improving network performance.

  9. Firmware Updates: Regular firmware updates from the manufacturer can provide security patches and performance improvements. Make sure your WiFi modem supports automatic firmware updates or can be easily updated by the user.

  10. Price and Brand: Prices for WiFi modems can vary significantly. Popular brands in this category include Netgear, TP-Link, Arris, and Linksys, among others. Consider your budget and needs when selecting a brand and model.

WiFi modems are essential for establishing a reliable and high-speed internet connection in your home or business. Choosing the right modem-router combo that aligns with your ISP, internet speed requirements, and coverage needs is crucial to ensure a seamless and secure internet experience.

User questions & answers

Question: What does "AC1200" mean
Answer: AC means that the router has support for the 802.11ac (or Wi-Fi 5) wireless networking standard, which offers fast WiFi network connections on the 5GHz frequency. 1200 means the max Mbps is 1200
Question: Does the box come with the necessary cables? (e.g. power cord and coax cable
Answer: It does come with a power cord and either net cable. A coax is not needed since cable company should connect their end directly to the modern.
Question: Does this modem have netgear genie
Answer: Hello Thank you for contacting us. It has Netgear Genie App Management. Any questions please contact us again. Thanks.
Question: I see many ppl asking about a router and answers say “modem only” but the description says wifi modem combo. what am i missing
Answer: The confusion is due to the illogical way Amazon links questions and answers to products. There are several different products listed on this one product page. Some are just modems, others are modem/router combos. Unfortunately, all the different products on this page share the same questions and answers which aren't relevant to one another. If the description on the product you have selected says it's a modem/router combo, then it's a modem/router combo. The people saying it's only a router are answering the question based on the product their viewing or have purchased. This is a problem that effects many products throughout the Amazon site.

User questions & answers

Question: Why does it say 4x ethernet ports in your description where there is only one
Answer: Because Amazon hasn't corrected their product subscription. I submitted one two weeks ago and has yet to be done. If you need more than 1 ethernet port, then this one is not for you. This has only (1) 2.5 Multi-Gig port.
Question: Does netgear cm500-1aznas work with tds provider
Answer: Yes. But you need to call the TDS customer service and provide your CMAC or SN to register your device. These numbers are on the box and the unit
Question: Can you use a phone to ethernet splitter for voice to work
Answer: I have never heard of a phone to internet splitter, at least not expressed in those terms. However, for VOIP (which means Voice Over Internet Protocall), you must have at least one phone jack in a modem, or a modem-router combination. Some modems have two such jacks, which could provide two different "lines." Most importantly, you must have your internet service provider's PERMISSION to install and use such a modem, or modem-router combination! My own ISP (Wow, aka Wowway.com) REFUSED to give such permission because that would cut into their profits, since they would no longer receive a monthly FEE to RENT their age-old junk, much of which are at least five years old, which is like a millenia in this day of super-fast-paced electronic offerings. I had to send back every VOIP-capable modem I bought from Amazon and other places because my ISP REFUSED to enable them to work with their so-called service(s). Talk about anti-competitive business practices ... U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), are you paying any attention?
Question: I understand that this modem says it will only work with xfinity. but has anyone tried this with spectrum? (aka time warner cable
Answer: Hello. I am writing this Dec 2, 2020 and just activated this modem 2 days ago with Spectrum. It is not on the list of approved modems, but oddly enough the CM400 is. I just told the tech support who activated it that it was compatible and it's worked fine with no problems. I went from 100-120 mbs on my 100 mb plan to 250 to 450 mbs, still on the 100 mb plan. This modem is not on the list of approved models but it seems to work fine so far without periodic latency/drops like the Arris model from Spectrum had.

User questions & answers

Question: I want to buy this latest model mg7700 asap, when is gonna available
Answer: Not sure about the answer to your question. The MG7700 is very popular at the moment and all you can do is keep monitoring availability.
Question: What is the range of this modem? I'm looking for a strong signal throughout a 4,000 sq ft home
Answer: Model MG7700 should provide coverage to a large house. Unfortunately, because of so many variables involved, there isn't a way to measure the range (or speed) experience a user will have. Factors, including positioning of the Gateway, building materials, obstruction or even your neighbors WiFi usage, play a role in what will both range and speed. That said, model MG7700 is equipped with a sophisticated built in Dual Band AC 1900 WiFi router. Support for concurrent 2.4 and 5 GHz bands with AnyBeam beamforming at those bands, focuses the signal on wireless clients to allow further improvements to wireless performance, including range. Model MG7700's built in WiFi router will increase your chances for a better WiFi experience over other Gateways on the market.
Question: Do you have to pay for extended phone tech support in the event it stops working
Answer: Motorola has a pretty decent 2 year warranty, with good phone support even through this Novel Corona-virus causing many companies to lessen customer support. This is a solid modem that saves me $185 every year with Comcast. It's interesting as I had Comcast service 12 years ago and back then one could own their own modem to save you $15, but they would charge you the same $15 for the access card a month. I went back to Comcast as Frontier is at deaths door. These days Comcast doesn't charge for the access card as the FCC put the kibosh on cable companies being in the cable rental business. At the end of the day, this Motorola's paid for itself twice over and still counting.
Question: Are you able to install firmware updates? When I owned a combo modem+router, Cox locked out firmware updates because it was a cable modem
Answer: No, you can't personally update the firmware, apparently, the cable company gets it from Motorola, and updates it for you. I guess for compatibility or maybe some other reason.

Answer: Yes it is! It has dual functionality. If you have a router you like already you can turn the wifi part off and just use it as a modem
Question: This says it isn't compatible with at&t, does that mean my iphone, with an at&t connection, will not be able to use this modem
Answer: It is not compatible with AT&T High Speed Internet service, only good with traditional Cable Service. Your iPhone will connect to the Wi-Fi without issue.
Question: i'm using this with netgear router (with port forwarding). therefore i have to run this modem in bridge mode. would i be better with a cheaper modem
Answer: I think you'd be better with a cheaper modem. The whole point of getting this modem is so you don't need to purchase a separate router/Wi-Fi access point.

User questions & answers

Question: How is this model different than the arris surfboard sb
Answer: The sb6121 only has speeds of 172 Mbps download and up to 131 Mbps upload. This model has up to 343 Mbps download and 131 Mbps upload.
Question: Going with the cable modem option what’s the best router to pair this with for spectrum
Answer: It depends on your needs. Needs are based on the number of devices connected and the size of area you are trying to cover. I would highly recommend a mesh network unless your home is 1200sqft or smaller. A centrally located router could cover that. The biggest problem is getting the 5ghz frequency to reach throughout the home. The 5ghz gives you speeds over 30mbps on wireless devices. 5ghz will reach roughly 40ft in all directions from your access point (ap). A mesh system gives you multiple ap and thus more area covered by the 5ghz.
Question: How many devices can connect at once? Is that that the 8x refers to
Answer: The 8x doesn't refer to the number of devices you can connect to it. You only want to connect one device and that's your WiFi router. You wireless router determines how many devices can be connect based on the available number of ip addresses on the wireless device. The 8x refers to the speed of Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS). Its informing you on the speed of DOCSIS 2.0 vs the newer DOCSIS 3.0. Ultimately your speed will be determined by how much you want to pay your internet provider. And you can determine how many devices you want to connect by the router you choose.
Question: Do I also have to buy a router for the modem? And to make sure it obviously speeds up internet connection right
Answer: If you only need to have one computer hooked up to the internet you do not need a router. If you want to hook up more than one computer or if you want a wireless network, you will need to buy the appropriate router. My internet speed went from 20mb to 100mb(the speed I pay extra for). TWC has also stopped charging me $8.00 a month for the use of their inadequate equipment.

Answer: Model MB7621 is a bridge modem, or a Cable modem without a built in WiFi router. You can either purchase an all in one (modem with the built in WiFi router) such as a Motorola MG7700, or purchase a a WiFi router to connect to the MB7621.
Question: Which one is better for my needs - the mb-7621 or the mb-7420? comcast highest speed for home use is 150 mbps and 100 for downloads
Answer: 3 things I can tell you. 1. The 7621 is 24 x 8 channels vs 16 x4 for the 7420. More channels means better flow of the data. 2. The 7621 can handle 1000 Mbps vs 643 Mbps for the 7420. Good for future upgrades of your internet speed if needed. 3. The 7621 came out in Dec 2017 vs 2015 for the 7420, newer tech, longer support from right now.
Question: What chipset is the mb7621 utilizing? intel or broadcom or other
Answer: Model MB7621 and all Motorola modems utilize the Broadcom modem chipset.

No cable modem is compatible with fiber optic, DSL, or satellite services from Verizon, AT&T, CenturyLink, Frontier, and others. Model MG7550 has no phone jack.)
  • Built-in high-speed Wi-Fi router with AC1900 Wi-Fi, and Power Boost, and DFS provides Internet access for Wi-Fi devices including smartphones, notebooks, tablets, game stations, HDTVs, Amazon Echo, Google Home, Chromecast, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, and AppleTV. User questions & answers

Question: How easy is set up on this device? Would I have to call my provider (Comcast
Answer: It is super easy to set-up, however you usually have to contact comcast with any new device because they have to put it on their system. I basically plugged it in and called comcast, they found the device on the network and I was up and running. The only other step you need is to go into the device setup (the ip address is on the label) and login and set up your username and password for your accounts. There are other settings you can set, but for a basic setup that is all you need to do.
Question: What is the difference between this one and the $89.99 that you also offer
Answer: The MG7550 is both a 16X4 modem and an AC1900 router integrated into a single unit. The MB7420 is a 16X4 modem, but does not include an integrated wireless router. The $89.99 MB7420 would typically be used with a wireless router. The MG7550 has a very powerful router built in.
Question: Is this a 32 band modem
Answer: The MG7550 supports the 250 Mbps and 300 Mbps services which are the fastest offered by the major service providers using DOCSIS 3.0. The MG7550 does not support 32 channels down, but as a caution, 32 channels is not likely to buy you anything more. The next major cable modem speed increase will use a technology called DOCSIS 3.1. That new technology is at least a year away for most people and will be a premium-priced service. The major cable service providers are very unlikely to use more than 16 channels for DOCSIS 3.0 because that would not be an efficient use of their networks. So buying a DOCSIS 3.0 device with more than a 16 channels down is not likely to buy you anything.
Question: Sellers keep saying the range is excellent. what exactly is the range for this router? numbers please. i need facts before i invest
Answer: The range you will get is highly dependent upon what kind of building you are in and how many other wireless signals are in the area. The range you will get in an apartment with concrete walls is much different from the range you will get in a suburban house with drywall interior walls. Results are also highly dependent upon what client (notebook, tablet, phone etc.) you are using. There is an independent study by Netperian that compares the speeds and range of competing AC1900 cable modem gateways. Various building types are used in the test and speed ratings were taken in each room of the buildings. The results were that the Motorola MG7550 is MUCH better than Arris and significantly better than Netgear. The report is over 40 pages long, so you will readily see a few numbers for range are only partial information. With all of that said, in an open field the MG7550 averaged 214 Mbps download speeds at 1000 feet and 475 Mbps at 100 feet. Those were much better data rates than Netgear or Arris with identical conditions.

Answer: Model MG7550 will broadast in both at the same time.
Question: What is the difference between the mg7540 and mg
Answer: The MG7540 has AnyBeam beamforming for only the 5 GHz that will focus the signal on wireless clients to allow better performance and range The MG7550 has AnyBeam beamforming for both the 2 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies which focuses the signal on wireless clients to further enhance performance and range. Better WiFi with AC1600 Dual Band

Dual band gives you two WiFi networks operating simultaneously in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Single band routers only use the 2.4 GHz band. This band is often full of interference as all your devices share that single band with your neighbors. The 5 GHz band in dual band products is typically much less crowded and has less interference. The bottom line? Dual band delivers much better WiFi.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this have a security key on it
Answer: Has WPA key on bottom tag. Has WPA/WPA2 wireless security. Also has Parental Control and Guest Network features.
Question: I have Xfinity blast will I have to call them to install this component
Answer: for me, i just had to connect it to my cable like it was connected. Xfinity website loads and it will automatically read the info off the modem, register it, and even update the firmware for comcast. its done automatically, takes about 10 minutes, and i did NOT have to call them!
Question: does this work with Time Warner cable
Answer: It is not on their approved list yet as of 3/8/2015. I can confirm in the Albany, NY area I have this modem working on Time Warner Cable. I had to talk to a modem specialist to get it working so it was not as easy as an approved device. Read my review for my review for more information.
Question: Can the firmware be updated by the user or only by the isp
Answer: Netgear confirms that only your ISP can update the firmware. This is unfortunate, as the current firmware (at least for Time Warner Cable) relies on outdated code that prevents the Netgear CM500 from obtaining the accurate System Time. This can lead to more dropped connections and difficulty when accessing secure sites. Despite replacing the CM500 with a supposedly updated unit, this error persists. The CM500 consistently reports the System Time as at least 5 hours out of sync.
