13 best internal hdd

An internal HDD, or Internal Hard Disk Drive, is a critical component of a computer used for data storage. Here is some information about internal HDDs:

  1. Storage Medium: Internal HDDs use traditional magnetic storage technology to store data. They consist of one or more spinning disks (platters) coated with a magnetic material and read/write heads that access data on these platters.

  2. Capacity: Internal HDDs come in various capacities, typically measured in gigabytes (GB) or terabytes (TB). The capacity determines how much data the drive can store. HDDs with larger capacities are suitable for storing more extensive files and data.

  3. Speed: The speed of an internal HDD is measured in revolutions per minute (RPM). Common RPM options are 5,400 RPM and 7,200 RPM. Drives with higher RPMs tend to offer faster data read and write speeds.

  4. Form Factors: Internal HDDs are available in different form factors, with the most common being 3.5 inches for desktop computers and 2.5 inches for laptops. These form factors dictate the physical size and compatibility of the drive with specific computer models.

  5. Interface: Internal HDDs typically use SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) interfaces for connectivity to the motherboard. SATA interfaces come in different generations, with SATA III being one of the most common and offering high data transfer rates.

  6. Use Cases: Internal HDDs are used for various purposes, including storing the operating system, applications, and personal data on a computer. They are also used in servers and data centers for storing large volumes of data.

  7. Reliability: HDDs are generally reliable but are susceptible to physical shocks and wear over time due to the moving parts. It's essential to handle them with care and regularly back up critical data.

  8. Price: Internal HDDs are cost-effective storage solutions, making them suitable for budget-conscious consumers and businesses.

  9. Upgrade and Replacement: Internal HDDs can be upgraded or replaced relatively easily in many computers, allowing users to increase storage capacity or replace a failing drive.

  10. Alternatives: While internal HDDs are common, solid-state drives (SSDs) have gained popularity due to their faster performance and durability.SSDs use flash memory instead of spinning disks and are often used as primary storage drives or for improving overall system speed.

Internal HDDs have been a staple in computing for many years, providing ample storage space for various applications. However, as technology evolves, SSDs are becoming increasingly popular for their speed and reliability, particularly for tasks that demand quick data access. The choice between an internal HDD and SSD often depends on the user's storage needs and budget.

User questions & answers

Question: Is the 2tb (st2000dm008) internal hard drive cmr or smr
Answer: The 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB drives are all SMR, which means they are slow for random writes and not suitable as boot drives. (Google "Why SMR drives are sub-optimal for write-intensive workloads".)
Question: Is this really 7200rpm? the model number suggests otherwise
Answer: I got the ST4000DM004 which claims 7200 rpm on amazon and my computer is reporting it has a media rotation rate of 5425 rpm
Question: Is a sata cable included in the package
Answer: Cables not included. You can buy a SATA data cable and likely the appropriate power cable for your computer right here on Amazon. Depending on your power supply, the power cable may already be connected to it in your computer -- some have that and some do not.
Question: Is this 7200 or 5400rpm
Answer: Only the 1 TB (#ST1000DM010) and 2 TB (#ST2000DM008) models are 7200, all the larger models are 5400. Both the llisted speed and model number change in the product description as you pick different disk size options. This is consistent with Seagate's website -- From the home page, drill down through (or search for) Internal / Hard Drives / BarraCuda - Learn More, and then click the 3.5 inch models tab (NOT the 3.5 inch PRO models tab). Then click on the data sheet next to any model to get a PDF with a table containing all of the models along with their drive speeds and other specs..

User questions & answers

Question: Is this drive smr if so i don't want it
Answer: No, it’s not. All Ironwolf and Itonwolf pro drives are SMR free, according to Seagate
Question: Does any one know a case where 3 could fit inside
Answer: I have 3 of these in a Synology 4 bay NAS DiskStation DS918+ works great!
Question: I purchased (2) 12-tb: anyone knows why i get 10.91-tb for each? why are we short
Answer: manufacturer considers 1 Megabyte to be 1000 Kilobytes, 1 Gigabyte to be 1000 Megabytes, 1 Terabyte to be 1000 Gigabytes and so on. This is correct considering that kilo means 1000 and mega means 1000000 (10^6). However, computers calculate on base 2 and to them, 1 MB is actually 1024 kilobytes, 1GB is 1024MB and 1 TB is 1024GB. This difference in the method of computation is responsible for this "missing space." Let's take an example of a 500 GB hard disk. From a manufacturer's point of view, the 500GB will have 500*1000*1000*1000 = 500000000000 bytes. From a computer's point of view, 500GB is actually 500*1024*1024*1024 = 536870912000 bytes. So, a hard drive that promises to have 500 GB storage space will actually display 465.66GB, 536870912000-500000000000 = 36870912000 bytes (34.34GB) less storage space when connected to a computer. This is true of every drive you buy
Question: Can this be used as a normal hdd storage drive for a desktop pc
Answer: I have two NAS drives in my computer, and they work great. I bought two easystore external hard drives and removed the hard hard drives from the case. The hard drives are 5400 rpm drives. I only archive things on those drives, and they work great. The 7200 rpm drives are better for gaming but more expensive. The easystores only costed me $150. They also have a 256mb cache.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I plug this in as an external hdd enclosure with usb 3.0 capabilites and have it function on an xbox one
Answer: Yes, the only requirement on the Xbox One side is that the connection be USB 3.0 and the drive be a minimum of 500 Gb. Other than that purchase a reliable enclosure kit that also supplies power and uses the SATA connection already on the HDD.
Question: On the picture it shows the hard drive's insides, do I need a special enclosure besides me computer case for this
Answer: If your are installing in a Windows PC, that is a new-ish computer (probably any that came with vista and many that came with XP) it will support Serial ATA hard drives, open abbreviated to SATA drives. You should look up the specs on your computer to insure compatibility. This hard drive is a SATA drive so it will install and replace your other computer. I purchased this drive, and also bought an external case. This would allow this internal hard drive to work as an external drive. It plugs into an external power supply and connects to the computer with a USB cable. The external case I purchased here on amazon is a: Sabrent USB 3.0 To 3.5-Inch Sata Aluminum Hard Drive Enclosure Black Case.I was installing Windows 7 on my PC. I stalled the WD 1 TB drive in the PC, installed the Windows 7 software, then installed my older smaller drive in the external case.
Question: Is this the retail version (boxed) or is it an OEM bulk drive
Answer: What do you think you get for $86/4TB? It's OEM without a warranty. If you want that spend $20 more for 2 years with the retail version. For my use I don't need a warranty anyway, odds are it will fail decades from now since I use these as storage mostly sitting unpowered on a shelf 95% of the time (with LTO backups just in case I'm unlucky). The 4 in my PC are the same drives in an 8TB raid1, and they have been spinning 24-7 for 3 years now with no HDD replacement needed.
Question: Which 1 TB hard disk you recomend between the Western Digital Blue WD10EZEX or the Seagate Barracuda ST
Answer: I have bought and used WD and Seagate hard drives. I have never had an internal WD hard drive fail on me yet, but I have had one of their older Elements external hard drives fail on me. As for Seagate, I purchased an ST2000DM001 (which is the 2tb version) several months ago that has now failed. I lost everything and got a clicking sound, as if it were stuck. Only lasted 5 months. In comparison I have had my 1st WD blue WD10EZEX for more than two years now and I have not had a failure at all. It's extremely reliable, so much so I decided to replace the Seagate one with a another one of the WD10EZEX's. I have 4 hard drives in my computer 1 SSD (For operating system), 2 WD Blues 1tb and an older Seagate one from an older computer (a dell dimension) with about 250gigs of capacity. I'm planning on getting another blue or black 1 tb to replace it later. I definitely would recommend the blues. It's not that expensive, it's reliable and comes with a decent warranty. I would not recommend Seagate. Just can't trust it. No matter what hard drives should last past the warranty, not even a year and it fails? What kind of QC are they having at Seagate?

User questions & answers

Question: Please purchase mounting hardware and cables separately if necessary. What do I need
Answer: You will need a mounting rail for the drive (with screws) to secure it in the computer, similar to http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Universal-Mounting-Bracket-BRACKET/dp/B0001UZQWG/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1402791368&sr=1-2&keywords=hard+drive+mounting+rail+kita SATA cable to connect to your motherboard if you do not have an extra available, such as: http://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-18-Inch-Locking-90-Degree-108783/dp/B009GUXU52/ref=pd_sim_pc_23?ie=UTF8&refRID=1039H3T1A80RRZ6K7P7H,and an available power plug or Y-cable (the white 4 pin or 6-pin) depending on what power cables your computer has, again depending on whether your computer has an extra alreadyhttp://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-PYO2SATA-Power-Splitter-Adapter/dp/B002N2EHVQ/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1402791237&sr=1-4&keywords=computer+power+y+cableorhttp://www.amazon.com/Computer-Molex-Power-Supply-Splitter/dp/B001PI9AAC/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1402791237&sr=1-3&keywords=computer+power+y+cableYour computer may already have a full width cable internally, in which case it will provide both power and communication
Question: Is everything I need to install this drive in my desktop included in the package
Answer: It only includes the drive. You have to make sure you have a SATA cable available. You also need screws, but it depends on your PC. Many new PC's do not use screws anymore. Instead they you reataining clips and brackets. On the otherhand, if you are replacing a bad drive, then you can just swap this one in its place.
Question: Why is this particular model about one-half the price of the following model
Answer: WD2002FAEX vs WD2003FZEXThe FZEX uses Advanced Format 4k sectors, faster on modern OSs (Windows 7, Vista SP1 and above); FAEX uses 512byte sectors (good XP and below). FZEX uses 800GB platters (higher density platters mean faster drive response time; fewer platters means less head contention when retrieving data (also faster retrieval rate); FAEX uses 500GB platters. The FZEX also has improved dual-core processor and other controller and firmware improvements. All of these make this drive faster than the older model. It still has the same dual actuators and bearings at both ends of the spindle (typical caviar black configuration).SATA 3GB vs SATA 6GB is irrelevant for 7200RPM hard drives, they can;t max out a 3GB connection, so the addition of the 6GB connection is purely for systems compatibility issues. What does all this mean? The FZEX is 20% (to 40% depending on data profile) faster than the FAEX. Plus it has a 5yr warranty (as does the FAEX), it is the same higher quality caviar black model line (dual actuators, bearing on both ends of the spindles, etc) than the red, green, or other low end drives with 2/3 yr warranties. You can tell how good the drive is based on the length of the warranty, thats how much money the manufacturer is willing to put behind the quality of the drive.
Question: So many of these reviews say the drives are old (pass their 5 year warranty). Is this true
Answer: You Get A warranty for 5 years no matter what as far as the age of these drives i have no idea but that does not matter since you get a 5 year warranty no matter what and they are great drives they offer great performance definitely worth the price get this drive for your laptop you wont be disappointed

User questions & answers

Question: what is the rotational speed of this hard drive? I'm asking because I don't see it listed here
Answer: It's 7200
Question: What is the warranty
Answer: As other reviewers have mentioned, all Seagate drives sold on the Amazon Seagate page have no warranty of any kind. DO NOT BUY THESE DRIVES.
Question: This drive was made for datacenters. Can it be used in a regular pc as a separate drive besides the main drive containing the operating system
Answer: As long as you have a modern PC. It's typical SATA III interface. The only issue is with older PCs because you need a BIOS that can deal with GPT partitions. But really, if you have something that came out after around 2010 - 2012, the BIOS should be more modern. BIOS, being software/hardware = firmware that's involved with the basic functionality of the hardware that's part of the PC, which is what brings the PC up to the state of being able to load an operating system, such as Windows or Linux.
Question: Are these retail or oem? seagate won't warranty oem drives
Answer: I emailed them this question about the 8TB Seagate Exos 8TB Internal Hard drive, and at least they were honest. (saberPC). I chose not to waste my money on a 'questionable' 5 YEAR warranty from a company that may very well not be around in 5 years, and even if they are, a company with a 10% 'unsatisfied' customer raises some serious red flags. Better to spend an extra 50 bucks and get a real warranty from Seagate. 5 years is a LONG time. 'The Seagate hard drives that we are selling are OEM drives which are all brand new and sealed from the factory. The warranty is from us that we offer an industry standard 5-year warranty on all hard drives and we have been in business for over 12 years. So once the device is not working under the warranty, all you need to do is to email or call us, and provide us the serial no, and that is it. Please let us know if you still have questions! Best, SabrePC'

User questions & answers

Question: Does this drive support sata iii
Answer: Yes
Question: How do these compare with older PH3500U-1I72 version? Toshiba dropped the warranty on X300 to 2 years, why? What compromises were made
Answer: I think they are the same disk nearly, when I test the performance, they behave no difference. Moreover, both disks use the same firmware version. However, when i check the warranty period on Toshiba website, x300 stated as 3 years and ph3500u stated as 2 years, totally mixed up.
Question: What is warranty period? it is not available on toshiba site, or amazon
Answer: It appears the warranty period is 2 years on this particular model.Using the model # of HDWE140XZSTA found here in the description, I found the following on toshiba's web site:http://support.toshiba.com/support/viewContentDetail?contentId=4001732&pf=trueI personally went with the 5 TB hard drive and have been very happy with it.You might contact the actual seller and verify this info, but that is what I found on Toshiba's web site.Hope this helps. Later.
Question: What's the difference between this one and the older model
Answer: The X300 uses more advanced storage techniques and more efficient cache management techniques and protocols. It is faster, and more efficient. There is nothing wrong with the older model, I have both in use n my network, but the x300 is better suited for a busy digital media server especially if your server/workstation has multiple core processors. I like the X300 the only drawback (if you want to call it that) is tha te X300 is a little bit on the noisy side due t the read/write head technology used. It is not objectionable in my opinion. Both drives have been dependable.

User questions & answers

Question: What does this mean? "300tb/year workload limit"... i'll be using this in a destop pc for every day use not for server purposes
Answer: Why not
Question: Is this "renewed" drive still backed by the Seagate warranty
Answer: The straight answer is no, only one partition. However I am using it as a secondary drive so it is partitioned as a whole. I f you installed it as the main hdd, the system automatically will break it in 2 partitions, the 2 tb for the system drive and the rest as a secondary disk. The system drive cannot be greater than 2 tb in some os. Was the box seal intact and the disk in a sealed bag?
Question: Can i implement it in my lenovo Z50-70 Laptop
Answer: There was no Software come with.
Question: Will this give me more storage space for my ps4 pro? I'm a new gamer & the 14/16/18 games I have on the system have almost devoured my 1tb
Answer: If you're selling "NAS" drives you shouldn't be putting a limit. It looks like they have it at "3" now but some people are creating a NAS with "4". Not answering just hoping the seller reads this.

User questions & answers

Question: Can i use this HDD for desktop
Answer: Absolutely, yes you can!
Question: Can wd ultrastar be used in thinkstation. i heard hgst enterprise drive is incompatible for home desktop, and need to fix the 3.3v pin problem
Answer: 3.3v pin problem can be fixed by using a Molex-to-SATA power adapter, here: https://smile.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-3-Pack-Molex-Power/dp/B00STNUB04/ref=sr_1_3?crid=345P4SZAA2LNW&keywords=molex+to+sata&qid=1562983596&s=gateway&sprefix=molex+t%2Caps%2C150&sr=8-3 But not all Ultrastar have that feature. Look at the model number. If the next-to-last character is L, you're fine without an adapter; if it's 0, you'll need one. However, just because you can make the drive work in a desktop doesn't make it the best choice for that application. These are datacenter devices, optimized for datacenter operation, and somewhat noisier than desktop drives. If you do still want this particular drive, I wouldn't buy it from Amazon. All the buying options are through marketplace sellers, and you're likely to get an OEM or gray-market drive with no guarantee of a specific model number and no WD warranty (you have to contact the reseller if you have a warranty issue). B&H sells the same drive in sealed retail packaging at competitive prices (slightly lower at the time of this writing).
Question: Does the 14tb drive have the power disable feature
Answer: Hello, nope the 14TB Ultrastar DC HC530 released by Western Digital doesn't have the power disable feature, only the 10TB and 12TB ones have the power disable feature, for the 14TB Western Digital dropped this, see the model number "WUH721414ALE6L4", see the "L" at the end? That means it doesn't have the power disable feature.
Question: Is the ultrstar 8tb drive warrantied by western digital and for how long
Answer: Yes and no. Technically they have a five year warranty, but the drive you receive from a marketplace seller may be OEM or gray market, and not eligible for WD warranty, only reseller warranty.
