Answer:	Hi, good question. The answer is that it depends on how much stuff you're carrying in the left-side folder pockets. With nothing in it, or just a few papers/discs/business cards in it, the depth is slightly over an inch. Fill the folder pockets, include a loose magazine, and with a full pad of paper and you'll be looking at slightly over 2". Big picture, I really don't see this item as being a pack mule; rather, it's like an elegant portable writing station. Hope this helps :)
