9 best kvm dvi switchs

A KVM (Keyboard, Video, and Mouse) DVI switch, often referred to simply as a KVM switch, is a hardware device that allows users to control multiple computers from a single set of keyboard, video, and mouse peripherals. These switches are commonly used in environments where multiple computers need to be managed efficiently, such as data centers, server rooms, and workstations. Here are some key details about KVM DVI switches:

  1. Functionality: A KVM DVI switch enables users to switch between different computers or servers using a single keyboard, monitor, and mouse. This simplifies the management of multiple systems, as users can control and monitor them from a central console.

  2. DVI Support: KVM DVI switches specifically support DVI (Digital Visual Interface) video connections. DVI is a digital video interface commonly used for high-resolution displays, making it suitable for applications that require high-quality video output.

  3. Port Options: KVM DVI switches come in various configurations, with a different number of ports to accommodate the specific needs of the user or organization. These ports can range from two to dozens or more, depending on the model.

  4. Hotkey Switching: Many KVM switches offer hotkey functionality, allowing users to switch between connected computers by pressing a predefined key combination on the keyboard, without the need to access the physical switch.

  5. Remote Access: Some advanced KVM DVI switches support remote access and management, allowing users to control computers over a network or the internet. This can be particularly useful for IT administrators who need to troubleshoot or manage remote servers.

  6. Compatibility: It's essential to ensure that the KVM DVI switch is compatible with the types of computers and peripherals you plan to connect. Check for compatibility with operating systems and hardware interfaces.

  7. Rack-Mountable: Many KVM switches are designed for rack-mounted installations in server rooms or data centers. They can save space and provide organized access to multiple servers.

  8. Audio Support: Some KVM DVI switches also support audio switching, allowing users to switch audio inputs along with video and keyboard/mouse control.

  9. Security: Security features may include password protection, user access control, and encryption to protect sensitive data and systems.

  10. Scalability: Some KVM DVI switches offer the option to daisy-chain multiple switches together for increased scalability, allowing control of even more computers.

KVM DVI switches are valuable tools for businesses and organizations that need efficient and centralized control of multiple computers without the hassle of constantly switching cables. When selecting a KVM DVI switch, consider factors such as the number of ports required, compatibility with your equipment, and any additional features that may be necessary for your specific use case.

User questions & answers

Question: How many monitors can this support? I have three monitors that I want to share between two computers in different combinations
Answer: If it's like the one I used to have, then it can support only one.But the bad news for you will be that while there are a few KVM switches which can support 2 monitors, a quick web search just now didn't find any that support more than that. HOWEVER there are a few ways around that to get more than 2 monitors.I assume that you have a DVI monitor since that's what this switch supports. If you can find a DVI-to-html converter (I know I've seen one in the past but I didn't find one just now) then if you convert your DVI to html and feed that to an html splitter box which allows multiple outputs, then you can run each of those to an html->dvi converter. But while in theory this approach would allow you to run anywhere from 2 to however many monitors you want to use (read "can afford"), in practice this setup would be so complex that it would probably (a) give more problems than you're likely to be able to solve, and (b) would cost a lot more than you'd like to spend.A cheaper solution would be to run multiple KVM switches (3 single-monitor switches, 1 single- and 1 dual-, or 2 dual- monitor switches). The problem there would be that even if you switch one of them with the keyboard sequence, you're still going to have to switch at least one of them manually as well. If you can find a keyboard splitter, then that might work; however, I haven't seen one of those in over a decade, and they were all in the pre-usb days :-(, so that's pretty unlikely. There is one other solution: at my previous office, there were a few techs who had 3 (or in once case 5) monitors and had switches for them which allowed the user to switch back and forth between multiple computers. The problem is that they were custom made for an extremely large (very large budget) company which didn't care about the cost. IIRC the cost for each switch (which looked more like a mid-tower PC) was in thousands.
Question: Anyone used this with a laptop using a docking station? the gcs 1004 would not recognize my older lenovo as being on and in the loop through the dock
Answer: I had problems using it with my Lenovo laptop with docking station. I turned out to be problems with the usb connection. My docking station has a number of USB ports so I tried them all until I found one that worked and after a couple of years I still can only use that one USB port. Not sure why it worked that way but it works. Good luck!
Question: Does this switch work with window
Answer: Yes, it does not need any drivers installed and is working on a system that was upgraded from 8.1 to 10 for me on this model and separately on a 4 port model.
Question: Does this KVM support hotkey switching
Answer: Yes. I don't have the full list of key commands in front of me but there is a pretty robust set of hotkeys that can switch the K/M, video, audio or all at the same time. See my review for details.

User questions & answers

Question: why does this need 2 USB connections to each computer
Answer: If you have a wireless keyboard/mouse combination you will only need 1 USB port and can the other to switch a USB printer.
Question: Can this switch between 2 VGA inputs without connecting a keyboard and mouse
Answer: Can you clairify your question? 1. Are you asking if it will switch between two VGA inputs while using the same mouse and keyboard input? If so, the answer is no. When you click the button, it changes the VGA input as well as the mouse/keyboard input. 2. Are you asking if it will be switch between two VGA without having to connect a keyboad/mouse? Then yes, if you connect just two VGA inputs, it will switch between them with no issues.
Question: Could two of the 2-port switches be daisy changed together to switch between 3 computers (mouse and keyboard only
Answer: That might work, but it sounds like it would be a pain to switch between computers. Check out http://synergy-foss.org/. If your 3 computers are all on the same network, you can install Synergy on each one, and share the keyboard and mouse between them. It's seamless. There's no switching involved. Your mouse moves between the monitors as if it was all one big desktop. You can even copy and paste between computers. It's like magic. It's not perfect, but it's pretty cool.
Question: can I switch computers with a hotkey
Answer: Takoma's response is correct. You can use the default Scroll Lock-Scroll Lock-Enter hotkey to do the switching instead of the dedicated button provided. In my experience, the dedicated button seems to switch faster than the hotkey. The screen swaps and keyboard/mouse input seems to come alive in under 2 seconds with the dedicated button, as opposed to using the hotkey which seems to get the keyboard/mouse going in about 2 seconds, but the screen catches up another 2 seconds later for a total of 4 seconds.

User questions & answers

Question: How long are the cables
Answer: I actually went back and measured. they look a lot shorter when their all coiled up together. Actual length is 37" to the end of the connector on both of the video cable and the USB cable that comes out of video connector is about a foot.
Question: I have a dvi monitor but my computers have hdmi. can i use an hdmi to dvi cable successfully with this? please don't answer if you are not sure
Answer: Not 100% sure, but if you have the HDMI to DVI adapter (cable or other) it may work. It may require a test.
Question: Does this switch work on two Windows 10 computers
Answer: I have mine hooked to the DVI on my monitor and to the DVI port on my tower computer running Windows 7 Pro. The other connection is to my laptop running Windows 10 home via a DVI to HDMI connector and it works fine.
Question: If you suspend 1 PC does this KVM automatically switch the input to the other PC? (I want one which does *not
Answer: No. It does not automatically switch to the other PC's input. You still have to manually press the button to switch to the other PC even though the first one is in suspended mode. This is a great switch. I haven't had any problems with it.

User questions & answers

Question: I have 2 laptops (each with dual monitors), do I necessarily need 4 ports or would 2 suffice
Answer: The four ports are for four computers and one monitor. Only one hookup for monitor.
Question: I have this gcs1004, but now have more dvi ports to switch to... has anyone used a second gcs1004, and daisy-chained it to the first switch
Answer: Yes, I have two of these daisy-chained together, in part because I have two monitors. At least, I am daisy-chaining the keyboard/mouse, although not the displays in my case because I need to output to two displays (one GCS1004 each). In my case, the two monitors means that both GCS1004's connect to displays, but this may not be necessary. In my case:#1 -- connects to mouse, drives computers 1,2,3, plus input #4 gets keyboard/mouse from other GCS1004. (As mentioned: in my case the display connects directly, not daisy chained)#2: connects to computers 2,3,4,5; keyboard/mouse daisy-chained from other GCS1004
Question: Can anyone confirm if this plays well and works reliably with a Logitech unifying receiver (using a Logitech keyboard and mouse
Answer: The short answer is yes, but you might need a short USB extension. Here is the long answer. I realize this sounds crazy, but the results are consistent. I have a Logitech keyboard/mouse combo that uses a unifying receiver. After a short while of use, the mouse got very laggy. I wanted to get it to work because there are no other KVM switches like this near this price point.I plugged the receiver into the mouse port and changed a setting that makes the port compatible with using hubs. No improvement. Then, I thought maybe it wasn't getting enough power, so I put a powered USB hub in between the two and the problem seemed to go away. If my assumption about power was correct, unplugging the power from the hub should make the problem come back. It didn't.I plugged the receiver directly into the KVM switch again to verify that the problem would come back and it did. I then decided to test with just a normal USB extension cable. The shortest one I have is 1ft. Again, the problem went away. I have been using it in this configuration for a few months without any issues. The Logitech software recognizes the devices and I can use the special buttons on the keyboard. The only downside is that I can't use the keyboard shortcuts to control the KVM switch, but the box is in a convenient location, so I don't really need them. I hope this helps.
Question: How is it possible to connect four computers with only two 44-pin KVM cables
Answer: I use this device and love it. The "44-pin KVM" cable is only on one end. This is a proprietary male plug/pin configuration. The other end of this cable splits into two standard (non-proprietary) DVI (24 pin + 4) style. Also, there are two standard USB male plugs on each split cable. So you plug in the DVI to Computer1, USB plugs into Computer1-keyboard and Computer1-mouse. Repeat the three plugs to Computer2. Then repeat all that, for Computer3 and Computer4. Essentially you have four complete DVI/Mouse/Keyboard cables that merge into two, proprietary ports on the IOGEAR KVM switch. Finally, you plug your monitor, via a standard, male-to-male, (DVI to DVI) from the IOGEAR to you monitor. Same for your keyboard and mouse. The IOGEAR pulls power from one of the USBs, to run it's internal circuits. There are four buttons on the front edge of the IOGEAR, along with a small white LED indicator, for each of the four computers. When you select one of the buttons, your keyboard, video, mouse, are connected. I've had mine about six months, works fine.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this allow a dock to take control of dual monitors when docked, and revert to desktop(main) machine when undocked
Answer: If I'm understanding your question correctly, then I believe the answer is yes. In my configuration, I have a MacBook Pro laptop (undocked and closed) and a Dell laptop that is docked (also closed). Both laptops remained closed at all times while I'm using my dual monitors. If I happen to open the Apple laptop, then the laptop screen becomes primary and one of the external monitors becomes the expansion screen. I'm sure this could be changed or altered using your computers configuration settings also. Hope this helps.
Question: Will this work with an audiobox usb, 2 studio monitors, 2 pc towers, 2 monitors, 1 mouse & keyboard? i need it to handle all audio from both computers
Answer: I am using it with an AudioBox iTwo and it works except that I don't use studio monitors just a pair of PreSonus headphones and that works. I can hear audio from both the PCs. I would assume that it would work with studio monitors as well.
Question: Does it include the KVM cables? I didn't see it in the description
Answer: Cables not included - they're extra, and big $$$ from StarTech. I purchased two of the StarTech KVM cables and both video cable portions had failed, one fairly quickly and the other about a year later. Suggest purchasing single cables elsewhere and ty-rapping them together rather that spending the big $$$ for Startech's. You should also take care to get the correct cables and make sure they are all the same pin configuration -- I had some problems initially that resulted in replacing some cables that were not getting along with the switch.
Question: just to make sure...2 towers, 2 monitors(dvi). 1 keyboard, 1 mouse? thx
Answer: 2 Towers, 2 Monitors (1 DVI, 1 VGA), kb/mouse

User questions & answers

Question: Is there any lag when switching between computers
Answer: Here is my experience:1) I have the two port.2) One of my monitors insists on going through a sleep/wake cycle (about 10 seconds) and the other does not. It is switching from a true DVIDVI connection to an HDMI(computer)DVI(KVM/Monitor) connection however.3) I do not believe there is a lag in the KVM because I can get the attention of the computer and start my login before I get to see the screen.HTH
Question: will these work on my product
Answer: Works beautifully with my Apple Desktop Pro and Mac Mini.
Question: Does this support gaming keyboards & mice, which have extra keys & switched, like those by Roccat
Answer: Assuming the gaming devices are USB, the KVM USB port acts like a USB hub. I worked around issues with my glidepoint keyboard by plugging it into the general USB bus instead of the USB port labeled for the keyboard.
Question: Does this work with a display port to dvi adapters
Answer: I think it would. I don't have a setup going from display port to DVI. I do have a D-Sub to HMMI to DVI because I was too cheap to pay $100+ for a true D-Sub to DVI connector. This Tripp Lite KVM is one of the best I used. I've used belkin, Iogear, StarTech, and Raritan. By far Tripp Lite has been the most stable and never lose my mouse or keyboard connections.
