9 best dvi kvm switches
A DVI KVM switch is a device used in computer setups to manage multiple computers using a single set of peripherals (keyboard, video, and mouse). The term "KVM" stands for "Keyboard, Video, Mouse," and these switches are particularly useful in situations where you need to control multiple computers, such as in data centers, server rooms, or when using multiple computers at a workstation.
Here are some key points about DVI KVM switches:
Functionality: DVI KVM switches allow users to control several computers from a single console. This console typically includes a keyboard, video monitor, and mouse. Users can switch between different connected computers without physically swapping cables or peripherals.
DVI Compatibility: DVI (Digital Visual Interface) is a video interface standard used for digital video transmission.DVI KVM switches support DVI video connections, ensuring high-quality video output.
Port Options: These switches come in various configurations, including the number of ports they offer. Common configurations include 2-port, 4-port, 8-port, and even larger options. The number of ports determines how many computers you can connect and control using the switch.
Hotkey and Button Switching: Users can switch between connected computers using either dedicated buttons on the KVM switch or by using keyboard hotkeys. This allows for quick and convenient switching.
USB or PS/2 Support: DVI KVM switches may support both USB and PS/2 connections for keyboards and mice, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of peripherals.
On-Screen Display (OSD): Many DVI KVM switches come with an OSD menu that is displayed on the monitor. This menu allows users to select the desired computer for control and configure various settings.
Cascade Capability: Some KVM switches support cascading, which means you can connect multiple KVM switches together to control an even larger number of computers. This is useful for managing extensive server setups.
Security Features: Some DVI KVM switches include security features such as password protection and user authentication to ensure that only authorized users can access and control the connected computers.
Audio Support: In addition to video and keyboard/mouse control, some DVI KVM switches also support audio switching, allowing users to switch audio sources along with video and input devices.
Compatibility: DVI KVM switches are typically compatible with a wide range of operating systems and hardware, making them versatile for various setups.
Rack-Mountable: Many DVI KVM switches are designed to be mounted in server racks for organized and efficient management in data center environments.
DVI KVM switches are valuable tools for streamlining operations, reducing clutter, and improving efficiency in environments where multiple computers need to be controlled from a single workstation. They are particularly popular in IT and server management scenarios but can also be useful for tasks like multimedia production and gaming where multiple computers are involved.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it work to combining a chromebook and a windows 7 pc |
Answer: | Hello. Thanks for your question. Our KVM can support most of the mouse and keyboard on the market. It works with Logitech wireless mouse and keyboard, but the mouse and keyboard must be common basic mouse&keyboard, because it can not support special mouse&keyboard keys, all KVM Switches with Hot Keys function on the market can not solve this special key compatibility issue, because it involves extra drives. MK550 is ergonomic keyboard, our KVM Switch USB keyborad port can not support its multimedia buttons, its mouse forward and backward buttons on the side may not be supported. We have considered this situation, so we add extra USB 2.0 port on our KVM Switch, you can use the USB 2.0 port to solve this incompatibility issue, the only problem is you will can use its Hot Keys function. I hope my answer is useful to you. If you have other questions, please tell us. Thank you again. |

User questions & answers
Question: | why does this need 2 USB connections to each computer |
Answer: | If you have a wireless keyboard/mouse combination you will only need 1 USB port and can the other to switch a USB printer. |
Question: | Can this switch between 2 VGA inputs without connecting a keyboard and mouse |
Answer: | Can you clairify your question? 1. Are you asking if it will switch between two VGA inputs while using the same mouse and keyboard input? If so, the answer is no. When you click the button, it changes the VGA input as well as the mouse/keyboard input. 2. Are you asking if it will be switch between two VGA without having to connect a keyboad/mouse? Then yes, if you connect just two VGA inputs, it will switch between them with no issues. |
Question: | Could two of the 2-port switches be daisy changed together to switch between 3 computers (mouse and keyboard only |
Answer: | That might work, but it sounds like it would be a pain to switch between computers. Check out http://synergy-foss.org/. If your 3 computers are all on the same network, you can install Synergy on each one, and share the keyboard and mouse between them. It's seamless. There's no switching involved. Your mouse moves between the monitors as if it was all one big desktop. You can even copy and paste between computers. It's like magic. It's not perfect, but it's pretty cool. |
Question: | can I switch computers with a hotkey |
Answer: | Takoma's response is correct. You can use the default Scroll Lock-Scroll Lock-Enter hotkey to do the switching instead of the dedicated button provided. In my experience, the dedicated button seems to switch faster than the hotkey. The screen swaps and keyboard/mouse input seems to come alive in under 2 seconds with the dedicated button, as opposed to using the hotkey which seems to get the keyboard/mouse going in about 2 seconds, but the screen catches up another 2 seconds later for a total of 4 seconds. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this product support keyboard and mouse dongle like Logitech unify or other ones |
Answer: | The only ones that do anything (that I can tell) are the ones labeled 1/A, 2/B, 3/C, and 4/D (to select which computer is active). The rest don't make a beep or seem to do anything. No manual that I could tell. Also, it will come WITHOUT a battery for the remote, AND without telling you what kind of battery! It's a CR2025. I happily had some laying around. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this allow a dock to take control of dual monitors when docked, and revert to desktop(main) machine when undocked |
Answer: | If I'm understanding your question correctly, then I believe the answer is yes. In my configuration, I have a MacBook Pro laptop (undocked and closed) and a Dell laptop that is docked (also closed). Both laptops remained closed at all times while I'm using my dual monitors. If I happen to open the Apple laptop, then the laptop screen becomes primary and one of the external monitors becomes the expansion screen. I'm sure this could be changed or altered using your computers configuration settings also. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Will this work with an audiobox usb, 2 studio monitors, 2 pc towers, 2 monitors, 1 mouse & keyboard? i need it to handle all audio from both computers |
Answer: | I am using it with an AudioBox iTwo and it works except that I don't use studio monitors just a pair of PreSonus headphones and that works. I can hear audio from both the PCs. I would assume that it would work with studio monitors as well. |
Question: | Does it include the KVM cables? I didn't see it in the description |
Answer: | Cables not included - they're extra, and big $$$ from StarTech. I purchased two of the StarTech KVM cables and both video cable portions had failed, one fairly quickly and the other about a year later. Suggest purchasing single cables elsewhere and ty-rapping them together rather that spending the big $$$ for Startech's. You should also take care to get the correct cables and make sure they are all the same pin configuration -- I had some problems initially that resulted in replacing some cables that were not getting along with the switch. |
Question: | just to make sure...2 towers, 2 monitors(dvi). 1 keyboard, 1 mouse? thx |
Answer: | 2 Towers, 2 Monitors (1 DVI, 1 VGA), kb/mouse |

User questions & answers
Question: | How many monitors can this support? I have three monitors that I want to share between two computers in different combinations |
Answer: | If it's like the one I used to have, then it can support only one.But the bad news for you will be that while there are a few KVM switches which can support 2 monitors, a quick web search just now didn't find any that support more than that. HOWEVER there are a few ways around that to get more than 2 monitors.I assume that you have a DVI monitor since that's what this switch supports. If you can find a DVI-to-html converter (I know I've seen one in the past but I didn't find one just now) then if you convert your DVI to html and feed that to an html splitter box which allows multiple outputs, then you can run each of those to an html->dvi converter. But while in theory this approach would allow you to run anywhere from 2 to however many monitors you want to use (read "can afford"), in practice this setup would be so complex that it would probably (a) give more problems than you're likely to be able to solve, and (b) would cost a lot more than you'd like to spend.A cheaper solution would be to run multiple KVM switches (3 single-monitor switches, 1 single- and 1 dual-, or 2 dual- monitor switches). The problem there would be that even if you switch one of them with the keyboard sequence, you're still going to have to switch at least one of them manually as well. If you can find a keyboard splitter, then that might work; however, I haven't seen one of those in over a decade, and they were all in the pre-usb days :-(, so that's pretty unlikely. There is one other solution: at my previous office, there were a few techs who had 3 (or in once case 5) monitors and had switches for them which allowed the user to switch back and forth between multiple computers. The problem is that they were custom made for an extremely large (very large budget) company which didn't care about the cost. IIRC the cost for each switch (which looked more like a mid-tower PC) was in thousands. |
Question: | Anyone used this with a laptop using a docking station? the gcs 1004 would not recognize my older lenovo as being on and in the loop through the dock |
Answer: | I had problems using it with my Lenovo laptop with docking station. I turned out to be problems with the usb connection. My docking station has a number of USB ports so I tried them all until I found one that worked and after a couple of years I still can only use that one USB port. Not sure why it worked that way but it works. Good luck! |
Question: | Does this switch work with window |
Answer: | Yes, it does not need any drivers installed and is working on a system that was upgraded from 8.1 to 10 for me on this model and separately on a 4 port model. |
Question: | Does this KVM support hotkey switching |
Answer: | Yes. I don't have the full list of key commands in front of me but there is a pretty robust set of hotkeys that can switch the K/M, video, audio or all at the same time. See my review for details. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this support 1080p 144z display? The refresh rate of 144hz is a blocker for me |
Answer: | Sorry for the delay, I have had trouble with my email and can't get it solved yet. The strap is very stretchy and I do think it will fit that size bottle. Be careful when stretching the strap it will wear through and break it pulled too far out too often. |
Question: | What is the difference between b07kvj54x2 and b07kn4j2xd? they both have the same module number ckl-922hua |
Answer: | Are you sure the circumference is 17.5 inches?..that makes the diameter 5.57inches..a VERY large bottle by any standard..I use mine to hold a propane bottle for my stove and it is 3 7/8 inch diameter.. |
Question: | Does this switch allow you to watch both PCs on separate monitors while controlling one with the keyboard/mouse |
Answer: | Hello, thanks for your question. You can connect that extra USB 2.0 port if it causes problems with special mouse buttons/media controls, but your mouse can not use mouse gesture to switch inputs. If is keyboard, you can use keybard hot key commands. If you have any other questions let me know. Thank you again. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What power adapter plugs are included in the package? Multiple plugs, or a fixed e.g. US plug |
Answer: | Thank you for choosing IOGEAR. The AC adapter has a standard integrated NEMA 1-15P connector. |
Question: | can this kvm switch 2 monitors between 2 pcs? I want to use dual monitors on each of 2 desktop pcs |
Answer: | It switches two monitors between 4 PC's. It's a fabulous KVM switch. |
Question: | Is this unit rackable into a 19in rack and does it come with the ears? if so, how many U's does it take up |
Answer: | Christina, this unit is not rack mountable unless you do some modifications. If you were able to do that, it would only be 1U. |
Question: | Will this switch still work if I use a cable that has DisplayPort on one side and DVI on the other |
Answer: | My IT dept provided me this 2-port KVMP switch with DVI-DL to DP cables. I got no video out of them. After lots of testing and calls to Dell, the conclusion was that I either needed an Active Adapter for DVI to DP, or to use DVI to HDMI. I was unable to test the active adapter solution. NOTE: With DVI to HDMI, I was limited to 720p resolution. With DVI-DL to HDMI, I got full 1080p resolution. Computer tested: Dell E5440 with docking station. Monitors tested: Dell P2717H (has both DP 1.2 and HDMI 1.4). Also, DVI DL to a monitor with DVI-DL input (my Samsung P2770) works great as well. |
