User questions & answers
Question: | I dont need video storage. I just need to be able to check in on my dog from time to time. Does this require any kind of monthly fee to view on phone |
Answer: | No. 24 hours of free recording in app |
Question: | Is there a way to get notifications without having to record video? I just wish to know when there is movement but do not need the video to be saved |
Answer: | Search expired films. Then each picture must be deleted three times. Follow notices of expired notes. |
Question: | What are the advantages of the new spot cam over the original kasa cam? is this just a cheaper model |
Answer: | Several. It will depend on what your needs are. GeekLingo review reports the following (hard to find these details at the Kasa website)... The field of vision, resolution, motion detection, push notifications -- all the same. Build quality is lesser than KC120, but both are Wall-Mountable. There is no wired PoE feature on the Spot. It's only wireless. PoE is usually preferred, but not by everyone. Perhaps the biggest advantage is that Spot has 3 levels of Zoom (2x@360p, 6x@720p and 8x@1080p) - KC120 does not have any. Spot has one channel at 2.4Ghz - KC120 adds 5Ghz. Therefore, Spot offers only one connectivity speed @ 150Mbps - KC120 offers four (11, 54, 150, and 433Mbps). Spot offers 20ft of Night Vision - KC120 offers 25ft. |
Question: | Do I need to pay for a service with this camera |
Answer: | According to Kasa's website, hidden away in the plan (Kasa Care) descriptions, a footnote on the free plan says Kasa Spot is ineligible for the free services, implying you will need to pay at least $4 USD monthly, per camera, for clip viewing/storage. However, after some pointedly inconvenient digging I did find a support article that states that the Spot has a vague free plan for cloud storage that is "less than one day". A reviewer I found claimed this was a period of 3 hours, which is next to nothing if you're not constantly monitoring your phone, defeats the purpose of a cloud service, and crowns this product soundly as the worst free cloud service I can recall for home security cameras. A sad descent from TP-Link's other indoor camera which offers one of the best. However this is fine if you do not need the cloud/alert service and simply want a live camera to manually monitor which I believe is free. Though I think there are cheaper options for that. This is troubling though, because TP-Link went out of their way to not address this on any official product summary I can find here, other vendor sites, or on their own website. Instead skirting the issue with vague statements and misleading (as even responders here have fallen victim to) people to falsely believe that the free services associated with other products are available by this lack of clarity. This is extra troubling since the security cameras that do qualify for the 48 hour free services have twice the frame rate (at 30 frames per second) at the same resolution (1080p), meaning the Spot (at 15fps) actually generates essentially half the footage/bandwidth/storage and is there by less resource intensive for TP-Link to manage with their services that are not free. So while other indoor Kasa cams are around $80 USD with industry generous free services, in a year you will pay ~$50 USD for the Spot, then $40-$48 (they have a yearly renewal option) more for the ability to meaningfully use it. That's nearly $100 only for one year. |
