10 best gimbal head for tripods
A gimbal head for tripods is a specialized piece of photography equipment designed to provide smooth and stable support for heavy camera and lens combinations. Here's what you should know about gimbal heads:
Stabilization: A gimbal head is primarily used to stabilize telephoto lenses and large camera setups. It's especially valuable for wildlife and sports photographers who need to track and follow fast-moving subjects while maintaining stability.
Design: Gimbal heads have a unique design that allows for fluid movement in multiple axes. They consist of a cradle that holds the camera and lens and a pivoting arm that allows for tilting and panning motions. This design mimics the movement of the human wrist, making it easy to track moving subjects smoothly.
Balancing: Proper balance is crucial for gimbal heads to work effectively. Photographers can adjust the balance by sliding the camera and lens back and forth on the cradle.Achieving balance ensures that the camera setup remains stable and doesn't tip over.
Fluid Movements: Gimbal heads enable photographers to smoothly pan and tilt the camera in any direction, making it easy to follow subjects without jerky movements. This is particularly important for capturing action shots or wildlife photography.
Weight Capacity: Gimbal heads are designed to support heavy camera and lens combinations, often weighing several pounds or kilograms. They are ideal for use with super-telephoto lenses commonly used in wildlife and sports photography.
Quick Release Plates: Many gimbal heads come with quick-release plates that allow photographers to attach and detach their camera setups quickly. This feature is convenient for switching between different shooting setups.
Tripod Compatibility: Gimbal heads are typically designed to mount on standard tripods with a compatible tripod mount. They can also be used with monopods for added mobility.
Photography Styles: Gimbal heads are commonly used in wildlife photography for tracking birds and animals, sports photography for capturing fast-paced action, and astrophotography for smoothly tracking celestial objects.
Price Range: Gimbal heads vary in price depending on their features and build quality. High-end gimbal heads are often made of durable materials and offer precision adjustments.
Maintenance: Proper maintenance, such as keeping moving parts lubricated and ensuring all screws and knobs are tightened, is essential to ensure the longevity and performance of a gimbal head.
In summary, a gimbal head for tripods is a specialized tool that provides stability and smooth movement for photographers working with heavy camera and lens setups, particularly in dynamic and fast-paced shooting scenarios. It is a valuable accessory for capturing professional-quality images in various photography genres.

About the Wimberley Gimbal Head II
The Wimberley Head is a specialized gimbal tripod head for telephoto lenses. Its gimbal head type design allows you to easily support and manipulate very large lenses for tracking birds and animals. Since its introduction in 1991, the Wimberley Head has become the industry standard for serious nature photographers.
The Wimberley Head Version II offers the same stiffness, capacity, and fluid movement of the old version in a more compact and lightweight package. The head’s redesigned panning base has zero play, and the pan locking knob has been moved to the side of the head, thus allowing the user to easily operate both knobs with the same hand. New lobed “soft-touch” knobs provide a more comfortable grip and perform better when using gloves.
In addition to the above improvements, Wimberley has examined all aspects of the head, tightening tolerances, improving friction materials and so forth. Our goal has been to make this head functionally and aesthetically better in every way than the old version and competing products.

User questions & answers
Question: | When ordering this gimbal head. can i get a second 1/4 qr plate, for my second camera |
Answer: | Snaps on/off just fine. Pins are properly sprung, and the mount clicks in solidly. Little to no play, just like a native lens. |
Question: | I have an ambico tripod with the quick connect shoe that screws to camera bottom. can i still use this? no way to take the original tripod head off |
Answer: | Well I have a a7 w and with my experience not all third party extra work in auto mode... but personally I expect that so I no going n I most likely not have maybe auto focus or auto exposure but keep n mind when you are on a tripod and taking a macro... r u n a hurry ? Probably not so just use them as a tool to get your close up ... I’m sure it’s like that with all models unless u by close up rings from Sony but I don’t think that is there objective to create auto close up extension tubes... so I just go in knowing I will use Manuel for focus n exposure Good luck n thanks for asking Kwpstudio.com |
Question: | Is this a fluid filled gimbal head |
Answer: | These are extension tubes that are placed between your lens and your a6000. Every lens has a minimum focus distance... for example, a lens might focus at 10 feet but at any distances less than 10 feet it will not focus. If you add this or both of these extension tubes between your lens and camera body, you will be able to focus at distances less than that minimum focus distance. The trade-off is that you lose the ability to focus at the other end of the focus distance... no infinity focus and no focus at longer distances. This is for close-ups of insects, leaves, flowers, etc, where you are at a working distance of only inches. |
Question: | How does this model compare with the almost indentical priced Neewer model with the round tube |
Answer: | Yes. I used it a lot with a D3200 and the connection is exactly the same. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work with a manfrotto mk294 tripod |
Answer: | No. It is designed specifically for Canon R series mirrorless cameras which us a RF mount. The Rokinon FE14M-C 14mm F2.8 Ultra Wide Lens for Canon (Black) is the same basic lens but is designed in a Canon EF mount to fit directly onto your t7i / 800d and any Canon DSLR EF mount camera. ROKINON Full Frame lenses will work great on crop sensor cameras with the advantage of you able to still use them if you move up to a Full Frame sensor camera. On your T7i it will yield a view equivalent to approximately a 22mm lens on a Full Frame Camera. |
Question: | What are the differences between mark i vs mark ii |
Answer: | Lighter and I prefer a native mount. I have both the EF and the RF version of this lens and they are both fantastic! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this use the arca style clamp system |
Answer: | the A6000 is designed to take e-mount lenses. It is an e-mount camera. |
Question: | Does the gimbal have enough clearance for a large lens like the Sigma 150-600 sport |
Answer: | That is certainly NOT the length of the lens. It is almost certainly the minimum focus distance. I have this lens for Micro 4/3, which means mine might be slightly different length than yours, but only slightly. Mine is about 3.25 inches long. WIth the lens caps on, from back of the rear cap to front of the front lens cap is about 3.5 inches. The lens shade is 2 and 1/8 inches deep, so when it's on it adds about 2 inches to the length. By the way, the MFT version shortest focal length is 0.9 meters. |
Question: | Can you make a adjustments to make the arm swing or turn loosely |
Answer: | It does include a lens hood |
Question: | can you purchase the quick release plate locking knob separate?, it comes loose and I lost mine |
Answer: | With mirror lenses you have one and only one aperture. In this case it's f/6.3. At 300mm, f/6.3 is going to be a relatively shallow depth of field, and the "hyperfocal" setting won't be very deep. In other words, there's very little margin for focusing error. |
