User questions & answers
Question: | weird Q: a recent outage trapped elder lady in her power recliner. can this be used |
Answer: | We have a dual electric recliner sofa. After being temporarily "trapped" during an power outage, we purchased the APC UPS, 600VA BE600M1 APC UPS Battery Backup system. This week we had a 3 day outage, and the UPS worked like a champ. A must have for anybody with electric recliner chair or sofa. |
Question: | How long will it power my system while the power is off |
Answer: | I had my desktop computer, 2 monitors, and my modem/router combo plugged into the ups battery power. It lasted less than 20 minutes when the power went out, and there was no additional warning when the battery was about to shut off. It just had this intermittent double beep for about 15- 20 minutes, then bang, everything off. Pretty disappointed. I guess you get what you pay for. |
Question: | How often does the battery need to be replaced |
Answer: | I have had APC batteries last 7-8 years, the shortest was 13 months (12-month warranty, figures!). I have bought replacement batteries from other vendors, don't last at all. I had a beautiful APOC SUA1500, Batteries Plus sold me 2 x SLA batteries duct taped together (yes, literally) and they were NOT made for a backup power suppl;y as they stated, leaked, corroded the entire inside of my very expensive unit! I certainly regret that decision! Batteries Plus said they had the APC batteries, but when I got to the store they did not, ordering them, would take a long time, so I tried their option - will NEVER shop at Batteries Plus again! Just yesterday I had one APC battery die. Bought new unit Dec 17, 2017, today is March 31, 2020. Just over 3 years, their average. No complaints. |
Question: | Does it have ethernet ports |
Answer: | No, and generally you'll want to avoid surge protectors or UPS's with built in surge protectors that have multiple ports (i.e. coaxial, Ethernet, phone) since these devices turn on at different voltage levels. So once a surge comes in on the LINE (HOT) side of the AC outlet and the voltage has reached a certain level, the surge will be directed to both the NEUTRAL and the SAFETY GROUND, but as soon as that happens, some of the surge makes it's way into the COAX, ETHERNET, and PHONE ports and if you have something plugged into those ports then it goes into the devices. A recent study (see: http://incompliancemag.com/article/lightning-surge-damage-to-ethernet-and-pots-ports-connected-to-inside-wiring/) confirms this. The best place to secure PHONE, and COAX connections is where they enter the house and where they can have a short (less than 10 foot connection to a buried GROUND ROD). If you secure phone & coax at the service entrance and protect your electronics with Type 3 Surge Protectors you won't need to secure the Ethernet connections. Also, it's not a good idea to rely on the Surge Protector inside a UPS as those have a higher clamping voltage generally in the 650-800 Volt range and that means until the voltage reaches 800 volts, your electronics is getting zapped. You can't plug a UPS with an MOV surge protector into an existing MOV based surge protector for compliance (safety) issues, but you can plug a UPS with an MOV surge protector or an MOV surge protector into a Series Mode filter since the filter does not rely on sacrificial MOV's. The Series Mode filter starts to work at 121.4 VAC on a 120 VAC line and it totally eliminates the surge instead of diverting it and hoping the surge can make it's way back through your house wiring to the buried ground rod from the main electrical panel. |

Question: | How long does the battery last |
Answer: | I just purchased mine but from past experiences it should last 5 years and you can use it without a battery but without the software or battery back up. |
Question: | How long will the 425 model run a 5 watt device |
Answer: | My UPS 650 software says I have up to 35 minutes when hooked up to a desktop monitor and modem. I would think the 425 would be 20 minutes or less if the same power consumption is demanded. 5 watts isn't much, so it should last longer. |
Question: | There really has been no direct answer to the question about disabling the alarm (forget installing software). Is there a way by "holding" the button |
Answer: | If you read the manual they make available on this page for the 600AH batteries and up, you will see that you CAN TURN OFF ALL ALARMS! I would not recommend turning off the LOW BATTERY alarm, but you can turn that off too! Not sure about the 425 though. Though, you can look up the manuals for all of them as the not only make them available but ENCOURAGE you to read them BEFORE you buy them!! Kinda like that kind of information being there. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the unit noisy, ie is there a fan |
Answer: | There is no fan on my BX1500M. Is quiet on Utility power and only a very low hum on battery power if you place your ear close to it. |
Question: | Does the 1500va indicate it's amp hour (how many hours it will run?) ie 100 volts x 15 amps for 1 hour? or 100 volts x 5 amps for 3 hours |
Answer: | The 1500VA/900watt rating has absolutely NOTHING to do with the run time. It is a rating of the maximum output level for a very short period of time. The BX1500M uses a 12 Volt 9 Ampere hour battery that means it stores 108 watt/hours of energy. The inverter (the electronic circuit that converts the stored 12 Volt DC power to 117 Volt AC power) is far from 100% efficient, and will not operate if the battery is near complete discharge, so the actual stored energy output for this device is 68 minutes at a 100 watt load. At the full load output of 900 watts the UPS will provide power for about 5 to 6 minutes before the battery is depleted and it shuts down. |
Question: | Have a few months lost power and this goes out immediately. is there a set up that i missed? light on with power. thanks |
Answer: | I did the same thing on my first unit, didn't plug in the battery. Went for a long time because the rest of the unit was working ok and I WAS SURE it would work if needed. It never would switch to safe shut down mode. FINALLY I opened the unit and found the battery disconnected ! Will make sure the next unit will have the battery hooked up as per directions. |
Question: | Pure sine wave? or Modified |
Answer: | It is in between. Though not pure sine wave, it has many little steps, vs Modified (modified square wave) which is simply 0 + 0 - 0 + 0 - 0 +... (3 status levels) A very good explanation and comparison graphs are shown at: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/812247-best-ups/ Hope this helps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How long will this (1000VA )run with a 100 what load |
Answer: | About 5 min on a full load, up to about 20 with 500va |
Question: | Is this 1500 watts |
Answer: | In AC circuits, the power factor is the ratio of the real power that is used to do work and the apparent power that is supplied to the circuit. The power factor can get values in the range from 0 to 1. When all the power is reactive power with no real power (usually inductive load) - the power factor is 0. When all the power is real power with no reactive power (resist load) - the power factor is 1. The apparent power in volt-amps when the real power is 1500 watts and the power factor (assuming) is 0.8? S = 1500 watts /0.8 = 1250VA Hope this helps... |
Question: | Is this pure sine wave or modified/stepped/simulated |
Answer: | Most of APC consumer products are a stepped approximation of a sine-wave and for most users that's fine. However, larger network servers and some MFR's require a pure sine wave. A pure sine wave basically is a smooth line moving up and down an oscilloscope. A stepped approximation of a sine wave still goes somewhat smoothly but has small steps instead of a smooth wave. Finally stepped sine wave has the appearance of the wave being a box moving across the wave. Most electronics are fine on a stepped approximation of a sine wave, it only older systems and larger servers that require the pure wave. |
Question: | is it noisey |
Answer: | No. The only sound it makes is when you loose power, then it beeps. You can even turn that off if you wish. Other than that, it's silent. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use this to power my cpap |
Answer: | If power goes out it would power the CPAP for a short period of time (15 - 30 minutes maybe more maybe less not 100% sure what the power consumption of a CPAP is). You should not attempt to use it for extended periods of time however. For instance if you want to try to use it for a mobile solution like camping without power. For that you would want to consider a much larger battery. A battery backup would not likely be a good solution for that situation at most practical (able to carry it around) sizes. |
Question: | will this operate my pellet stove if power goes out |
Answer: | I don't know anything about pellet stoves. A quick Google search indicated that it would take several marine batteries wired in parallel, to operate a pellet stove for any period of time. This unit is a back up UPS designed to provide just a few minutes of 120 VAC to give a computer system operator enough time to safety save their work and shut down the system. I do not believe that this will provide what you want it to. |
Question: | sine or simulated sine |
Answer: | I went to the APC site and found the following for any Back-ups model---these models of UPSs output a stepped approximated sine wave when on battery. They are designed for computer type loads, not for motors. |
Question: | I live in a 220v country though i can plug this in a step down converter to 120v. can i still plug all my 220v in |
Answer: | 120v in = 120v out. All your equipment plugged into this would only receive 120v. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is height of apc ups 1350va |
Answer: | The dimensions of the unit are: 15.04 x 3.94 x 9.84 in The unit is 3 inches over 1 foot tall. |
Question: | will this unit help protect computers when you use power form a generator during black out |
Answer: | So if you are speaking of surge protection, yes. There Are outlets that are surge protection only and outlets that are surge protection plus backup. Once power is restored in any form, be it shore power or a generator the unit goes into surge protection mode only. |
Question: | does this device ship with a battery? I ass u me it does, but amazon site lists ups + batt when ordering, hence my stupid question |
Answer: | Yes your APC 1350 UPS comes with a battery installed. You will have to remove the battery to activate. |
Question: | How long does it last for surface pro |
Answer: | Too many variables to state exactly. The power supply of the SP4 is rated at 44 watts (per Microsoft). The BX1350M is rated at 67 minutes when producing 81 watts. (81 watts is as low as their graph goes). So I'd guess you'd get AT LEAST one hour and probably closer to two hours. But why? If your intent is to run the SP4 for extended periods without available household electricity, I'd look into an external auxiliary battery for the SP4, like this, or similar. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076P4P93T/ref=sxts_kp_bs_tr_1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=8778bc68-27e7-403f-8460-de48b6e788fb&pd_rd_wg=cyIiK&pf_rd_r=XT94JPKRGSSAAA17GF2D&pf_rd_s=desktop-sx-top-slot&pf_rd_t=301&pd_rd_i=B076P4P93T&pd_rd_w=mzAqP&pf_rd_i=surface%2Bpro%2B4%2Bexternal%2Bbattery&pd_rd_r=a0ab32b0-edab-4ea9-8db0-e3fe42472e39&ie=UTF8&qid=1541614343&sr=1&th=1# |

User questions & answers
Question: | If the input/output voltage for the addon battery pack is 12vdc, could a deep cycle be used by the unit in theory? The packs that power it are simply sealed wet cells anyway |
Answer: | To a different APC model, I tried 2 deep cycle gel-cells that overloaded the charging unit and resulted in a fire. As FNC said, the inverter cannot handle the load. APC does make devices to which external APC batteries can be added, not cheap though. APC also has a 2200 watt unit that plugs into a normal 15A 110 volt socket. |
Question: | How long can the battery keep on a 800 watt machine when the power is off |
Answer: | IT has 2 of 12V batteries hooked in series to make a 24V power supply. If you run using a steady half the rated wattage (433 watts) it will last about 30 minutes. But wattage consumption on most electronics is difficult to measure. A device may pull 40W at one moment and 400W at another. No chart or list will be correct for your equipment. APC also likes to make you think it will last longer by giving you best times possible. You should buy a wattage meter (under $25 generally) and measure the actual equipment you are using. Get the peak VA value used. Double that value and buy a UPS based on that doubled value. If you use a UPS backup regularly at any more than 50% of its rating, you'll have very miniscule times for it to keep things running and will be replacing batteries more frequently. Buy the biggest UPS you can afford if you want more time. Also only with this BR1500G you can add the supplemental pack which adds 4 more batteries to the original 6. The supplemental pack triples your up time. I run about 400W on a computer, 2 monitors, a printer, an LED TV, a high speed modem/router, a TIVO, a DVD player and a small LED light. Using the BR1500G and its supplemental pack, I get about 30-45 minutes with all this stuff running. But note I'm only using about half the rated wattage. I'd only get 1/3rd that amount of time with the BR1500G alone. I have 2 3D printers. Each one has its own APC BR1500G UPS and stays up about 45 minutes when power fails. You can never get too big of a UPS (except maybe for your unit's weight and physical size). Buy as large as you can afford to and you will be less likely to be disappointed. Also never daisy chain them together or use extension cords or plugs without the earth ground 3rd prong. These units will conduct huge amounts of current and will get very warm when discharging or charging. Leave them charging all the time. Don't unplug them or let them discharge often or you'll be replacing batteries more often. These are for short duration power outages. They are not meant to substitute as a generator to power devices. Never hook high wattage appliances like microwaves or refrigerators or washer dryers to them. That will damage your units. |
Question: | Description says surge protection is rated at 355 joules -- not much protection at that low rate. Is this correct? Thanks |
Answer: | You are correct. APC's site lists it at 354 joules. That is pretty low compared to a good power strip at nearly 10 times that rating. If you live in an area with surge problems (i.e. lightning), then you could plug the UPS into a good power strip first ... or rely on APC's connected equipment protection warranty. |
Question: | What kind of audible alarm does this unit have? Is it a simple beep and it over, or is it like a screeching banshee chasing its prey |
Answer: | It is a simple beep, easily silenced with a touch of a button. I've been using it in a 5th wheel as I travel and has been very reliable, especially in parks where power is not super reliable. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How tall are the digits on the LCD indicating the runtime? And is the LCD's viewing angle such that it can be read with the UPS on the floor |
Answer: | The Blue display total size is 2" x 2" and sharp and clear. Digits for line voltage are about 1/2 inch and the run time is a 1/4 approx. bar above digits. I would say if you can see your digital alarm clock from where you want to place the unit you will be able to see quite well. Also UPS status can be displayed by supplied software with unit. |
Question: | I have a harmon pellet stove Mo.# XXV start amps 4.2 run amps 2.8 will this unit be adequit to run unit till I shut it down |
Answer: | I wouldn't try it, according to Ohm's law (assuming standard US 120 household voltage 120v*4.2Amps=Watts) your starting wattage is 504 which exceeds the maximum recommended wattage on this device. You should look for one with a higher rating. |
Question: | Is there a UPS like this that can automatically power cycle the router when internet connection dies |
Answer: | The UPS unit will maintain a/c power to all devices connected to the battery backup outlets of the UPS unit. Loss of internet connectivity is a separate issue which would be dependent on the "cable" or "dsl" etc service provider. You might need to reboot the router after internet connectivity has been lost. |
Question: | Does this unit come with a compabible USB cable or does it have to be purchased separately |
Answer: | It comes with a semi-proprietary cable in that the end that plugs into the UPS is like Ethernet. The other end is a standard USB so don't lose it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can the smc 1000 power 2 router, 24 port switch, and a watchguard security device and nvr |
Answer: | Depends on how many Poe cameras you are powering using your switch and/or nvr. Most good switches will report your current power consumption, which should include the Poe for currently connected cameras. If not, figure about 7w per stationary camera, 9-15w for autofocus/manual zoom cameras and 15-60w for ptz cameras (some ptz models req special 60w poe power adapter or 802.3at, which is ~30w). Add all those camera wattages up, throw in at least 80w for the switch and 100w for the nvr itself, and you should have a fairly conservative estimate. |
Question: | Can you use the network connection to have several computers monitor the ups and gracefully shut down? powerchute seems to only use the usb |
Answer: | Be aware, the network connection only allows the UPS to connect to some sort of external APC service. The UPS can not be reached via the normal protocols such as SNMP nor has it an accessible web server. Because of the inherent security risks, I keep it disconnected from the network and have it power my network switches, etc. If you are looking for SNMP capabilities, look for the SMT1500C plus the management card. However, this will cost you almost double... |
Question: | dose va mean volts * amps ? so wattage |
Answer: | You’re very close. Watts = V X A X power facto. Power factor is a factor representing the phase shift between the RMS voltage signal and the current seen by the load and, compensates for REAL power vs APPARENT power. Power Factorwill vary with the type of load, but you can assume -1 to 1.1 for the mixed inductive/resistive loads you’d typically use with this type of UPS. If you want to be safe, just assume 1.2 to de-rate the capacity in Watts. By the way, if we were talking about DC power, rather than AC, then watts does exactly equal VA, since the Power Factor is, effectively, 1. |
Question: | what is the difference with the SMT1500C model which is more expensive |
Answer: | According to the APC website comparison tool, the SMT1500C has a larger battery with almost 40% more run time on battery power. |

User questions & answers
Question: | what is the purpose of the battery connector |
Answer: | If you are referring to the triangular battery connector on the back of the unit, it allows you to disconnect the battery without opening the UPS. This should be done when shipping the unit, for example, or when you otherwise wish to prevent it from powering on while unplugged from line power. |
Question: | Is it too loud for leaving room |
Answer: | Actually it’s pretty much silent unless the power goes out - then it will beep to let you know it’s running on batteries. So, yes, you can have it in your living room without worry. |
Question: | Buenos días. me gustaría saber que voltaje de imput tiene.. es 220v o 110v? yo necesito 220v para paraguay |
Answer: | I don't speak Spanish but it's 110V |
Question: | Just bought apc 1500va. plugged one thing, a printer into it. upon printing it emits a grumble followed by screach that lasts the entire print time |
Answer: | You should not plug a laser printer in a UPS for battery backup. Look on the back of the UPS - if there are outlets that provide surge protection only, without battery backup, plug it in there. If no outlets on the UPS indicate that they are surge only, then don't plug it in! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this protect you from more than one surge without resetting? Some continue to provide power after the surge but are unprotected until reset |
Answer: | 110 volt |
Question: | how long is the cord |
Answer: | My APC Power Strip Surge Protector, PE66W, 1080 Joule, 6 Outlet Surge Strip (White/Green with 6' cord) has a flat plug to go behind furniture. Don't understand why APC doesn't document this or illustrate it in their photo, it's a feature and what I wanted! Like many power strip flat plugs, the power line also comes out of the plug at 45 degree angle. |
Question: | Does it work with 220 or 110 v |
Answer: | Not sure of the depth as I’m not going to remove it to measure it, but it fits in a standard single gang box just fine. It is bulkier for sure, but I’ve installed several of these with no issues. |
Question: | Does this have a flat or right angle plug? Model PE6U |
Answer: | Yes, but it does not have enough output to charge a laptop. I have no issue with it keeping my iPad Pro fully charged while using it. |
Product features
Reliable and Safe Protection from Lightning, Surges, and Spikes
The APC SurgeArrest Essential series represents the primary level of surge protection that should be present on any of your computers and household electronics. Its state-of-the-art circuitry offers protection for sensitive electronic equipment against larger power surges and more common power fluctuations. Seven surge protected outlets and status indicator LED lights make the APC PE76 SurgeArrest the best value for quality surge protection.
Convenient and Safe for Home or Office
The SurgeArrest will warn you if its circuitry has been damaged by a heavy strike or power line surge and it is unable to provide full protection.
Low let-through Ratings
APC surge protectors are given "let-through ratings," which indicate the maximum voltage level that can possibly reach your equipment after a surge or voltage spike has passed through an electric surge protector. Lower IEEE let-through ratings indicate better protection and performance. The APC Essential SurgeArrest series offers optimal performance with a let-through rating of less than 400V for North American products, and a rating of less than 15 percent for products sold worldwide.
