14 best audio speaker switchers

Audio speaker switchers, also known as selector switch boxes, are devices used in audio systems to manage and distribute audio signals to multiple speakers or speaker zones. They are commonly used in home theaters, multi-room audio setups, and other audio distribution scenarios. Here's what you need to know about them:

  1. Purpose: The primary purpose of an audio speaker switcher is to allow users to choose which speakers or speaker zones receive audio signals from a single source or multiple sources. This can be useful in scenarios where you have multiple speakers in different rooms or areas and want to control where the audio is played.

  2. Speaker Zone Control: Speaker switchers typically come with multiple input channels and output channels. Each input channel can be connected to a different audio source (e.g., AV receiver, amplifier, streaming device), and each output channel connects to a set of speakers or a specific speaker zone.

  3. Source Selection: Users can select which audio source they want to play through the connected speakers by using the selector switch on the switch box or through a remote control. This flexibility allows you to switch between different audio sources without physically rewiring the speakers.

  4. Multi-Room Audio: Audio speaker switchers are often used in multi-room audio systems, where you can play different music or audio content in various areas of your home simultaneously or independently. This is ideal for creating different ambiance in different rooms or accommodating different audio preferences.

  5. Compatibility: When choosing a speaker switcher, ensure that it is compatible with your audio equipment. Check the input and output connections to make sure they match the devices and speakers you plan to connect.

  6. Amplification: Some speaker switchers come with built-in amplifiers, which can be helpful if you need to power additional speakers. However, not all switchers have amplification capabilities, so be sure to select one that suits your needs.

  7. Remote Control: Many speaker switchers come with remote controls, allowing you to change audio sources and control speaker zones from a distance. This convenience enhances the user experience, especially in larger homes.

  8. Audio Quality: High-quality speaker switchers are designed to minimize signal degradation and maintain audio quality. Look for switchers that use high-grade components to ensure minimal loss of sound fidelity.

  9. Ease of Use: Consider the user-friendliness of the switcher, including the layout of the controls, ease of installation, and any additional features like LED indicators for source and zone selection.

  10. Price Range: Speaker switchers are available in a range of prices, depending on their features and capabilities. Choose one that fits your budget while meeting your audio distribution needs.

In summary, audio speaker switchers, or selector switch boxes, are valuable accessories for managing and distributing audio signals to multiple speakers or speaker zones. They offer flexibility and control in multi-room audio setups and can enhance the overall audio experience in your home. When selecting a speaker switcher, consider compatibility, source selection options, remote control capabilities, and audio quality to ensure it meets your specific requirements.

User questions & answers

Question: I am installing in-wall speakers in multiple rooms. My question is what is the best cheapest in-wall volume controller that would work with this speaker selector
Answer: There is no difference in for the install if you mount speakers in the wall or ceiling.
Question: Several questions, How do you hook it to your stereo, I am hard of hearing so I hooked 3speakers to my stereo system, this is hooked to my tv when I turn it up some times it turns off by it self I do not understand that I would like more speakers all the 5 star reviews makes this product sound real good. the receiver
Answer: I think so. They mount with a screw and clamp. The screw is accessible behind the removable front grill. The speaker comes with a template so you know what size to cut out in the wall or ceiling. After you insert the speaker into the recess, as you turn the screw, it tightens the clamp onto drywall, securing it in place. Although it is designed for drywall, I think it will work on anything with approximately the same thickness (~3/4 inch thick).
Question: How Do You Hook A PSS6 Speaker Selector To A Pyle PCAU46A
Answer: I would recommend a 5.1 home audio receiver.
Question: can i play all 6 speakers at the same time
Answer: The pyle pta44bt would be a good amp for the speakers.

User questions & answers

Question: Cna you still use wall mounted speaker volume controls in each room to control the volume
Answer: Yes! I am using 2 Niles box to run 4 Cerwin Vega AT15 and 4 Kenwoods KLZ999... no problem at all!
Question: The one page "manual" says will accept impedance from 4, 8, or 16. My speakers are 6 ohms. Are they compatible? Any risks
Answer: yes
Question: will this deliver 8ohms to each speaker
Answer: I'd guess from the setup you describe, the 5 speakers in the family room are for a 5.1 Home Theater System, the rest being for stereo audio playback. This device allows a receiver to drive 6 pairs of stereo speakersA dual zone A-V receiver would be best, main zone to drive the 5 speakers and then hook the niles to Zone 2 to run the house audio speakers.
Question: someone knows what the difference between this product and http://www.amazon.com/Matrix-Speaker-Selector-Switch both the same manufacturer
Answer: HPS-6 allows you to only turn individual speaker pairs on and off at the switch. SSVC-6 supports inputs from two different sources. Two stereo amplifiers playing different music or other audio can connect and be selected at the volume control on the switch. So each pair or speakers can play either of the two input sources and volume is adjustable. Power handling is likely very close with both units. Check sp;ecs if you are going to rock the casbah. impedance matching with be featured on both switches. That is a big deal. Keeps the amps from running or failing.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be mounted
Answer: Takoma's response is correct. You can use the default Scroll Lock-Scroll Lock-Enter hotkey to do the switching instead of the dedicated button provided. In my experience, the dedicated button seems to switch faster than the hotkey. The screen swaps and keyboard/mouse input seems to come alive in under 2 seconds with the dedicated button, as opposed to using the hotkey which seems to get the keyboard/mouse going in about 2 seconds, but the screen catches up another 2 seconds later for a total of 4 seconds.

User questions & answers

Question: I don’t see a protection button. Is protection built into the circuitry and just auto running all the time
Answer: Impedance matching circuitry is built and activates according to the amount of speakers selected.
Question: watts peak or 200 watts standard RMS
Answer: they never are clear about that. always stating 200 watts rms. My take: I'm running 80 watts min. per channel @ 8ohms using 3 pairs speakers rated 8ohms that handle 130 watts each, no problems. this switch uses internal wiring configurations NO ON-OFF switch just speaker in or out select. REQUIRES 8 Ohm SPEAKERS TO WORK PROPERLY
Question: Does this connect to the speaker ouput of my amplifier
Answer: Yes. Speaker outputs from your amp to amp inputs on swith, then from speaker outputs on switch to your speakers.
Question: Can you use this product with speakers that are 4 ohms or 6 ohms
Answer: 8 ohms minimum.

Answer: If you have a wireless keyboard/mouse combination you will only need 1 USB port and can the other to switch a USB printer.
Question: Is this what I need to add speakers to my Zone
Answer: Can you clairify your question? 1. Are you asking if it will switch between two VGA inputs while using the same mouse and keyboard input? If so, the answer is no. When you click the button, it changes the VGA input as well as the mouse/keyboard input. 2. Are you asking if it will be switch between two VGA without having to connect a keyboad/mouse? Then yes, if you connect just two VGA inputs, it will switch between them with no issues.
Question: Can I run both sources at the same time
Answer: That might work, but it sounds like it would be a pain to switch between computers. Check out http://synergy-foss.org/. If your 3 computers are all on the same network, you can install Synergy on each one, and share the keyboard and mouse between them. It's seamless. There's no switching involved. Your mouse moves between the monitors as if it was all one big desktop. You can even copy and paste between computers. It's like magic. It's not perfect, but it's pretty cool.

User questions & answers

Question: Can two of these switches be connected back-to-back to route 4 Amps (1 at time) to 4 pairs of speakers? What would be the effective impedance
Answer: Not sure that I understand your question. This will provide protection for wattage more than 100 watts RMS, with peaks up to 200 watts. If you have a low wattage amplifier and the amplifier distorts due to being overdriven, the speakers are at risk of damage.
Question: I just hooked mine up and why is it that my amp keeps shutting off with a speaker error
Answer: This speaker selector is 'Impedance Correcting' so whether you are connecting only one speaker in the pair, say the Left Speaker, or both speakers in the pair, the impedance will not be affected. Impedance affects each channel, not pair. In other words, only the Left Speakers will affect the impedance for the Left Channel, regardless whether the Right Speaker is hooked up or not, but with this Speaker Selector and its 'Impedance Correction', it will adjust the impedance to stay above 4 ohms.
Question: Can you use all selections at once
Answer: I did mine with banana plugs. It's the easyest way to do. I got mine from amazon and they are way cheaper then Best Buy. I have a surround sound system with another b option. I used that. If you have a regular receiver then use all your main speakers as A or B or both depending on your receiver. If you have a option c speaker that is what you use. If you only have A & B then you main speakers will be A. Then take Speaker B and connect it to the main speaker Selector. From there you can start using speakers from other areas and plug them in. Note the speaker wires from other rooms like m.ine should be from the attic inside the wall behind the receiver, or what makes your rooms easy for you. I also purchased wall banana plug outlets from Home Depot, Best Buy for your buck. The system works great and is the best I have ever owned. It also protects your receiver from blowing any fuses. It's a click by click system that helps you control each area egual. Hope thi
Question: What output from the receiver do you connect to the input side of this switch
Answer: I have Windows, but I do not see why it would not support Ubuntu. Linux is actually a pretty well known OS and the product page does say it can support multiple Operating Systems. I am sorry I could not be more definitive.
Question: Anyone use this just for kb/mouse but not video? i use an hd tv as a monitor and have extra hdmi on the t.v. so only need the kb/mouse functions
Answer: Or you can get a vga to dvi converter. I actually had to go from HDMI down to DVI with a converter. But it works either way you go. You will just have the capability of the lowest piece of the conversion. Displayport, HDMI, DVI, VGA is the progression of performance top to bottom. You could always get a video card for the PC with 2 DVI ports. I did that once on another KVM switch on a different setup.
Question: The switch fails about 1 of 100 switches and I can't recover mouse/keyboard function without restarting the system I am switching to. Any fixes
Answer: I am having problems with the USB port, I’m currently going directly into one Pc at a time! Smh I know
Question: Does it work with Linux
Answer: No, it comes with the cables that will go into the computer, but you will to buy 4 cables to go the computer
Question: Can you use a keyboard key/hot key to switch computers
Answer: It depends on the video card output jacks you have on your tower and laptop. If it has hdmi like this, you're good My 4port kvm uses dvi ports so, all my vidcards must use USB/dvi cables.

User questions & answers

Question: Is the 300 watts per channel RMS with the impedance protection on or off
Answer: This KVM supports use of a single external monitor and two computers. Nothing would stop you from using the screens on each of the two connected computers in addition to the external monitor. However, you cannot display both computers simultaneously on the external monitor. Nor, can you connect the KVM to two separate external monitors, as there is only a single output on the KVM.

User questions & answers

Question: is the device works with unbalanced jacks also
Answer: Think about buying a selector switch without Volume Controls. Selector Switches, with today's great electronics inside, don't have this problem anymore unless of course you wire it wrong. Old switches with large transformers would hum and make other parts create signal noise.
Question: Can this be used with headphones
Answer: This depends on how high you you turn your amplifier volume up. If you set your amplifier to 100% volume and you set volume control knobs on this unit fully clockwise, yes you get 100%. There is no gain in volume as the unit has passive circuitry, no amplification simply volume control.
Question: Can this be used to switch from a dj controller which has its own soundcard to an external sound
Answer: I don't see why you couldn't but the primary use of this is to switch between amps or receiver/amp to the same speakers. There are cheaper solutions to run two sets of speakers from a single source.
Question: I have a krk sub that has line level outputs. can i switch between 2 sets of powered monitors? sub out to hosa switch to 2 different powered monitors
Answer: Don't know the answer for sure ...but I doubt it. This is a pretty simple switch. Does what it's intended to do very well ...on / off and volume. Maybe leave it on with the volume turned all the way down.

Hosa SLW-333

The SLW-333 Audio Switcher by Hosa Technology provides three signal routing options, eliminating the need to re-wire equipment. It is ideal for comparing an audio mix on three sets of powered studio monitors, or for switching between three stereo sources on one pair of monitors. This device is intended for line-level signals only, not for speaker-level signals. Do not connect this unit between power amplifiers and speakers.

User questions & answers

Question: I want to use this on two sets of speakers, one set for front height & second set for side surrounds and switch between the two. Is it possible
Answer: I have speakers throughout my house. The Pyle Six-zone box allows me to have music in most every room. Hook each speaker you have to the Pyle and hook the Pyle to your receiver, speaker A or B. I have mine on B. Connect your receiver audio to your TV audio. There is a separate button on the Pyle that you should always keep positioned to on (button in). That is the easiest I can make it for you. This box works perfect for me and has never shut off. Good luck to you.
Question: Does this switch allow me to control sets of speakers independently
Answer: I am running an older Technics amp 2x100 6 pairs of speakers at times so I would say yes. Just remember you are putting this amp to a lot of work if you're running 6 pairs of speakers so watch the temps on the amp.
Question: One person indicated what they believed the protection button was. Does anybody know? Pyle technical support apparently doesn't exist
Answer: Maybe. The more speakers that you connect the lower their effective impedance as seen by the amplifier. And the lower the effective impedance the higher the current that the amplifier must generate in order to drive the speakers to a specific listening level without distortion. Most speakers, particularly the less costly ones, have a nominal 8 ohm impedance. So if you are driving one set of such speakers the amplifier will be seeing an 8 ohm load. But if your amplifier is driving 2 sets of such speakers the amplifier will be seeing 1/(1/8 + 1/8) = a 4 ohm load; if your amplifier is driving 3 sets of such speakers the amplifier will be seeing a 1/(1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8) = 2.7 ohm load, etc. With 6 speakers your amplifier will be seeing a 1.3 ohm load. And this would be a nominal and typically maximum load; in practice the load fluctuates depending on frequency and is effectively lower for short periods of time. Some amplifiers are designed to drive such low loads but many are not. If you try to do that with such a low current amplifier for a long period of time you will burn up the amplifier. That is why speaker selectors like this one have a protection button which basically adds a resistance in series with the speakers in order to increase the impedance seen by the amplifier. This will reduce the overall efficiency and you will notice that you have to increase the volume to get the same amount of sound as with the protection button off.So, if your amplifier has a sufficient current capability to drive those 6 speakers to your desired listening levels, great. If it doesn't, and if the listening level is too low for your tastes with the protection button on, you will need to either settle for lower volume or get a more powerful amplifier.
Question: How do I hook this up to my 5.1 receiver
Answer: The sound is great there is no distortion.

User questions & answers

Question: can this be reversed to allow two inputs going to one output For example, two sound sources into one headset or speaker
Answer: Take the speakers lines running out of your stereo receiver plug them into the unit . Then you can split the Signal .
Question: Can i have 2 inputs output at the same time? or can you only switch between one or another
Answer: No holes for wall mounting. You would need to make one for it.
Question: Is there any 'pop' sound when switching outputs, as if you plugged in speakers while they were on
Answer: Yes, you have to wire it backwards of course - amps to speaker outputs, speakers to amp input. There are 1.8 ohm resistors in series with the amp output terminals so you will lose some volume. Also, they're only 5w so they won't take much power. I've played movies and CD at normal to loudish levels tho and they barely get warm if at all. I wouldn't turn it up to 11 tho. Finally, you MUST take great care and insure that only one amp is connected at any time. Even an amp that is turned off could be damaged by one that is on, never mind if they were both on.
Question: I bought a way cheaper switch box & boy does it sound like it. It sounds like its playing in a tin can. How do this one fair
Answer: Since the “Amazon 2x4 selector” is basically a switch box (completes the amp to speaker pair circuit you want) my gut says yes. But since you would be reversing the intended signal direction I can't comment on if auto impedance correction and overload protection, or even volume control will perform properly. And by reverse signal direction I mean to get your desired 4 amps mapped to 2 speaker pairs (4x2) rather than the intended 2 amps mapped to 4 speaker pairs (2x4) you would have to reverse your cable hookups on the back of the “Amazon 2x4 selector”. In other words you would have to connect your amp1, amp2, amp3, amp4 to “Amazon 2x4 selector” speaker1, speaker2, speaker3, speaker4 output jacks. And also connect your speaker1, speaker2 to “Amazon 2x4 selector” amp1, amp2 input jacks. Now with this configuration the “Amazon 2x4 selector” A/B amplifier button next to each volume knob will really be your speaker1, speaker2 selector. And your amplifier selector will probably have to the amplifiers themselves since you would want avoid sending more than 1 amplifier signal to any one speaker pair. Setting a volume knob to zero will may also accomplish this but I can’t be sure. Now what is the risk in trying this? Since the “Amazon 2x4 selector” is not powered (no power cord/supply directly to it) I think it is low. If it doesn't work you still have a really good 2x4 capability with auto impedance correction and overload protection. And if you are really persistent you could get (or build) two very simple 4x1 selectors. Label one of them A and one B. Connect all four amps to A selector and all four amps to B selector. Then connect A selector to Amp A input on “Amazon 2x4 selector” and connect B selector to Amp B input on “Amazon 2x4 selector”. Good luck. I applaud you desire to get it the way you want.

    User questions & answers

Question: Will fit on slider rack shelf with 16 inches wide and 15 inches deep? thank you
Answer: Good question. There are two things you should know before you pull the trigger on this. Banana plugs don’t insert far enough to stay put, and since I have this box hooked up to amplified speakers I kept getting a buzz. I bought special banana plug pig tails which I ended up removing because of said problem. What did work very well for me was to remove the banana plugs and strip and solder the speaker wires then tighten the threaded part against the inserted wire in the hole on the shaft, a very tight connection and that worked great. The other issue is you can’t turn off one the speakers which was reported in one of the comments. It is annoying but for my application one set of speakers is downstairs with their own volume control so, I just adjust the volume on them when in use. Hope this helps.
Question: I don't understand the description. what does the a /b button at each speaker volume control mean? doesn't the speaker pairs selected play together
Answer: Hi, I have one of these (returning the 1st one due to poor speaker terminal , I find that it will accept a 4mm and thicker Banana Plug. Amazon's model was poor fit, but MediaBridge's plug in more securely. I have not fully connected my XtremePro yet, but I hope this helps.
Question: Can the speaker connectors take banana plugs as opposed to threading the wires
Answer: I may not be understanding your question correctly, but with this item I am using the volume control on my amp for the front speakers and the volume on this device to control the volume on the rear speakers. So yes, I can set one set of speakers at a different volume that the other. Again, if I am understanding your question correctly.
Question: So I can hook up 4 sets of speakers on my new Pyle unit all on one receiver without worry of damage? Looked like chart had impedence fall off to
Answer: Yes as far as I can tell. Aka-when I only have on speaker on and flip the switch to turn another group on, the volume drops. It’s not necessarily half the volume though.

    User questions & answers

    Question: Is this rack mountable
Answer: Hi, no it is not mountable. However, you may customize your own rackmount. Thank you.
Question: can I use this amp with my sony str 1030 reciever to add additional power
Answer: This is not an amp. It takes an output to speakers and can run different sets of speakers. If you do not have enough power in your receiver to run the speakers it will not work. Each time you turn on a set of speakers it will drop the power by a percentage. Some receivers can not handle more then three sets.
Question: Can one of the zones I hook to be a powered subwoofer (which itself feeds a pair of small speakers
Answer: No you cannot hook up a powered sub woofer to a speaker selector
Question: Will this work with an old devon dra 35v receiver from the mid 80s? i have 4 pairs of speakers and might need to use at least three pairs at a time
Answer: I do not recognize the Receiver you are referring to but the connections are very simple. The speaker wires that are driving your speakers will be shortened and then connected to the Pyle Home speaker selector. Then your speakers will be connected to the Pyle Home speaker selector to each of the different four zones that you have in your home/office/whatever. I am presently driving three pairs of speakers with one zone unused. I have had perfect performance.
