13 best banana plugs for speaker cables
Banana plugs for speaker cables are commonly used electrical connectors designed specifically for audio applications. These plugs are widely used to connect speakers to amplifiers or receivers and offer several advantages:
Convenience: Banana plugs simplify the process of connecting and disconnecting speaker cables. Instead of having to twist wires and secure them with screws or binding posts, users can simply plug the banana connectors into the corresponding terminals on their audio equipment.
Secure Connection: Banana plugs provide a secure and reliable connection. The spring-loaded design of these plugs ensures a tight fit, reducing the risk of loose or disconnected wires that can affect sound quality.
Reduced Risk of Short Circuits: Banana plugs feature a fully insulated design, which minimizes the chance of short circuits or accidental contact between the positive and negative terminals of the speaker cables. This insulation enhances safety, especially in situations where multiple cables are connected in a confined space.
Enhanced Signal Quality: Banana plugs are known for their ability to maintain the integrity of the audio signal. Unlike bare wire connections, which can be prone to oxidation and degradation over time, banana plugs provide a consistent and stable connection, resulting in improved sound quality.
Color Coding: Many banana plugs come in various colors, such as red and black, to help users identify the correct polarity and ensure that they connect the positive and negative terminals correctly.
Compatibility: Banana plugs are compatible with a wide range of audio equipment, including home theater systems, stereo receivers, amplifiers, and speakers. They are available in various sizes to accommodate different wire gauges.
Versatility: Some banana plugs offer additional features, such as locking mechanisms or solderless designs, to further enhance ease of use and durability.
In summary, banana plugs for speaker cables are popular connectors in the world of audio and home theater setups due to their convenience, secure connection, and ability to maintain signal quality. They are widely available in electronics and audio/video accessory stores, making them a popular choice for enthusiasts and professionals alike.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you remove the banana clips from one end |
Answer: | The company says, “Coaxial cable is used for connecting a cable television, satellite receiver, cable modems, VCR, cable box, digital router, antenna, computer network connections, digital audio, converter box and for other audio and visual purposes”. I used it to connect to my building’s master antenna. It worked well. All I did was plug it into the wall receptor. As I understand it from above it is a CATV connection as it connected me to my building’s antenna. You could also use it to connect to your cable box, so long as you have a subscription. I do not see why you would need it as all cable company provide this for you. |
Question: | Is it common for the tips and shaft/base to come loose? This kept happening before and during installation. It’s like the plugs don’t tighten up |
Answer: | I don’t think it comes in black |
Question: | Is this for a pair of speakers or just one speaker |
Answer: | Mine is outside so far so good |
Question: | what gauge is the wire |
Answer: | yes it is length stamped but do not recommend RG59 for any technology made after 2005 |

Get the most out of your home audio system by ensuring the best connection from your speaker cable to your receiver with the Sewell deadbolt banana plugs. Using self crimping teeth These plugs provide a simple, secure, and low profile connection without requiring soldering or screws. These 1.6” inch plugs are extremely low profile making it so you can put your speakers or receiver closer to the wall. Unlike other banana plugs that use low quality metals like zinc alloy The Sewell deadbolt banana plugs use pure copper and high Quality brass with 24K Gold plating. Installation one of the best things about the deadbolt banana plugs is that installation is quick, secure, and requires no tools. Just follow these steps. Feed the cable through the bottom piece. Push the cable back over the teeth on the bottom piece. Screw the top piece to the bottom one. You're finished. All in all you should only need 10-20 seconds for this entire operation. What are banana plugs? Today, many electronics use the banana plug interface, also known as binding post (referring to This connection in its female form). this female binding post connection that accepts this banana plug is found commonly on virtually all audio/video receivers, speaker wall plates, and more. Banana plugs offer an alternative to inserting a bare speaker wire into the equipment. Often a bare speaker connection is not as reliable as a guaranteed banana plug connection. Wires tend to get pulled out or frizzy after time passes. Banana plugs require only one install, giving you a permanent and robust connector at the end of your speaker wire.
- 24k Gold Plating on Connector and Crimping Teeth
- Fast Lock technology makes it easy for self crimping a reliable connection.
- Heavy Duty Brass Casing for maximum durability
- Wider base minimizes shorting for maximum signal transfer.
- Maximum Wire Size 8 AWG (10 AWG suggested)
User questions & answers
Question: | Are these 4mm or 2mm diameter pins. I need 2mm but none of the good banana plugs are labeled |
Answer: | 4mm. All banana plugs come in one standard size. |
Question: | Can i use these on a 12v system as power feeds? if so how many amps? looking for at least 15a on 12v |
Answer: | That should work fine on a 12v power supply, we use those plugs for a similar purpose on the variable power supply that we have here in the lab. |
Question: | Can I use with 18 gauge speaker wire |
Answer: | Yes 18 gauge stranded wire will work fine. |
Question: | I have the old style speakers that have the connection that you press to push the speaker wire into. Will this work with the new style plugs |
Answer: | If you are asking if the banana plug will fit into the connectors you push the speaker wire into then the answer is probably no. For that type of connector I would consider coating the ends of the speaker wire with a thin layer of solder once the ends are in good shape so they will be easier to connect and disconnect. |

User questions & answers
Question: | im trying to make my own test leads for different applications, will these work/fit with a voltmeter |
Answer: | Depends. It should fit as the multimeters use standard banana plug socket innerds, but for years commercial test leads have no longer used bare plugs because of the hazards associated with accidental contact which would be shockingly dangerous if working with high voltage (yes, these meters are routinely used in high voltage electrical applications - my meter carries a CAT III rating for use with 1000V, CAT IV for 600 V). BUT, I mainly use my meter on ham radio stuff and sometimes on cars - all low voltage DC applications.I just ordered these to make a current (amperage) test rig with Anderson Power Pole sockets. Again, I stress that I am working with voltage running significantly less than 30V (sometimes 24 V systems in aviation or other automotive systems), but I will wrap the plug bodies in heat shrink insulation to minimize likelihood of contact. |
Question: | I've read that these plugs can accept 12-18 AWG wire; however, I'd like to know what you all have used/what is working best |
Answer: | I use 12 gauge on my fronts and 14 on my surrounds with no issues. The 12 gauge was a little difficult to get wrapped back around and then screw down, but I really don't know of any banana plug that would we easier, without going to the kind where they use a screw to fasten. This is the easier, cleaner look in my opinion! |
Question: | The description says: "Can accept bare wire and spades. " How do you connect spades |
Answer: | As PCKIDZ replied, this is a two function connector. The banana plugs are pushed into the hole in the end.If you unscrew the barrel which is knurled, the smaller shaft is exposed, where you can slip on your spade lug and then tighten the knurled shaft to secure the lug. |
Question: | whats the differance between open screw and closed screw banna plugs |
Answer: | "Open Screw" type plug (side wire) allows for daisy chaining or stacking additional banana plugs to the back. This is desirable in DJ applications if you're running a speakers in parallel and if your amp can handle the low impedances. Closed Screw type has the wire at the back. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Are the banana plugs on this cable 4mm of 6 mm |
Answer: | Yes, these do come loose all the time from the time they arrive. But they're good wires durable and flexibility. You can always swap the plugs out or glue them like suggested. I would have to say, out of the few cables I do have they're my favorite, and at a reasonable price. |
Question: | I presently have monster cable minus the banana plugs going from my yamaha as 501bl to my yamaha ns777s. Would I hear the difference with these |
Answer: | Just one speaker. Black and Red wires. |
Question: | Do these cables have any type of odor? I purchased the Sewell cables and they absolutely stank and I sent them back |
Answer: | 16 gauge |
Question: | Is this a pair of cables, or just one cable |
Answer: | 30 ft. |
- 100ft 14-gauge speaker wire
- 12 closed screw banana plugs
- True spec and soft touch wire
- Great for car or home use
- 2 jacket colors make for easy polarity identification
User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used inside walls |
Answer: | I also have monster cables connecting my front speakers to my stereo receiver. I used this cable to connect a center channel to my receiver. I agree that you most likely won't hear a difference. That being said, this is a high quality cable for a great price and the banana plugs are an added convenience. |
Question: | Is there any difference between 14 n 18 gauge speaker wire |
Answer: | I didn't notice any nasty smell from the cables I received !!!!!! |
Question: | How do you pull the wires apart |
Answer: | Each cable has two wires encased in one sleeve with two connectors on each end, one for + (red) and one for - (black). The connector terminals on any recently manufactured speakers should be coded red and black as well. If the speaker terminal is circular with a hole in the middle, make sure the terminal is fully closed by turning clockwise and insert the Mediabridge plug into the terminal hole. You need one Mediabridge cable for each speaker. |
Question: | Does the banana plug go into the same springeslot that bare wire did |
Answer: | Yes, I removed the banana clips from one end to be able to connect the bare speaker wires to my older Bose speakers. I did use a wire tool to remove the covering. It worked very well and I’m pleased with the results. |

Product description
Silverback Speaker Wire from Sewell offers deeper bass, greater clarity, better imaging, and cleaner highs from your connected loudspeakers and AV receiver. We've developed this speaker with the highest quality standards in mind. Instead of getting 90 to 100 threads of copper in 12 AWG wire, we've put 259 strands of copper into each conductor. Not only does an incredibly high strand count bring greater flexibility to your installation, but it also allows the current to travel around each strand (259) so that the speaker setup can play with less distortion at higher levels because it can move more efficiently. This is called the “Skin Effect” of speaker wire. Silverback Speaker Wire was designed to overcome all obstacles that plague audio fidelity.
- 12 AWG wire
- Oxygen Free Manufacturing
- 259 Strand Count
- Pure Copper
- Premium Jacket for Durability
User questions & answers
Question: | These are sold as a 2-pack for around the same price on Sewell's own website. Are there two cables (2 sets of red/black) for two speakers |
Answer: | The top, where the stem attached to the tree -- where you normally start peeling the banana. But, no need to peel first before using these, as they will plug right into the stem. |
Question: | Can I use these speaker wires which are 12 gauge from a wall plate to my receiver if my in wall wire is 14 guage |
Answer: | I read somewhere that says the gauge number is actually a fraction of an inch. So the higher the fraction the smaller the wire. e.g. 1/12" is larger than 1/16" |
Question: | it is one cable or it is a pair |
Answer: | No. It's a single conductor. |
Question: | Can I cut one banana plug end to use bare wire with standard "clamp" terminal on stereo, even though the speakers I have are binding post connector |
Answer: | It is pretty simple. You should have a whole in the middle of where your speaker wire hooks in. Instead of using raw wire you can attach it to the plug and then plug it in the receiver jack. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Are these available in 50ft length? I've been using these for a few years and have been happy with them but now I'm setting up a larger room |
Answer: | Don't think it matters, but I use equal lengths just to put my mind at ease. I bought a 10ft for my center even though it only needed 5 ft... The cables are good quality 12 AWG. |
Question: | R these bi wite |
Answer: | Mine are absolutely NOT soldered (or anything else) securely. When I first got them I noticed the banana terminal would spin in the plug end. Initially I figured they must screw in, so I started trying to do so. They never got tighter. They evidently are in a lose collar, which should mean higher than necessary resistance and possible arcing. I hope the company will address this. Is it normal? |
Question: | Can these cables be shortened, looks most of hardware is just screwed together except pvc Y boot,is it just slid on or is it shrieked to fit tight |
Answer: | Hi..Interesting question..These HIGH-GRADE cables do comes in different lengths, and would look great as a speaker connection..BUT NO, most likely NO..The ends of the 12AWG cables are designed of a specific fitting connector. The ends of these cables are a banana type connector. This end would be larger than you (push-in) wire type speaker connection. An easy fix might me to get some nice copper (stranded) probably 16 AWG to 18 AWG, strip the ends twist the strands in a tight wind, and put some solider on the ends..This is referred to as "tinning the wire" this will strengthen the end, for repeated use..if you know how to use "shrink wrap"..you could also use some shrink wrap to reinforce the sheath of the wire as well..This would look nice, and you could tell people how you built something... OR.. you could just twist the ends of the, attach it to the speakers and leave it alone..Good LuckMave |
Question: | can I remove the banana clips easily |
Answer: | Each cable is 6.6 feet |

User questions & answers
Question: | Which end of the banana do you plug it into |
Answer: | Yes this will work with 12 awg wire. |
Question: | which is thicker a 12 gauge wire or a16 gauge wire |
Answer: | Two-12-gauge wires is doubtful. I can vouch for their ability to accept a single 10-gauge wire, which why I bought these. Most banana plugs max out at 12-guage, btw. |
Question: | Is the banana plug the same as an rca plug |
Answer: | assembled, they are 1.803" long and .422" wide at the knurled part of the barrel |
Question: | The female connection each plug is said to have is hard to visualize. Is there a picture demonstrating its use |
Answer: | I had a similar question when I had purchased them, but no one knew the answer. I contacted Sewell and they informed me that the silver colored coating on the plugs are non-conductive. So if they touch it will not blow out your speakers, nor damage the receiver you are using. However, should a conductive material touch the gold plated portion of the plug then it WILL short, and possibly do damage. Hope it helps. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I buy last time this banana plugs for my receiver denon avr 6500h i try to inserted but it can't go through i thought this standerd for avr &spea |
Answer: | When new, the plugs are somewhat of a tight fit. Hold the AVR and push firmly. They will fit. |
Question: | My Yahmaha amplifier has flip/squeeze plugs, not the round ones I'm seeing here. Will these work |
Answer: | I tried it on a flip style and they were too big. The measurement of the plug is 0.15" or 3.85mm at the tip, at the widest 0.20" or 5.3mm. Your flip connectors may be larger than my example, a quick msr of the max gauge wire you can use will answer. |
Question: | Can i use these plugs with the speaker cables "rattlesnake 6" with a profile of 6mm^2? or what plugs are to prefer for these cables |
Answer: | This would not work with your speaker cables as FOSCBL-2312 is 4mm. Hope this helps. Thank you. |
Question: | is this a 4mm plug |
Answer: | Yes you are correct, this is a 4mm Banana plug. |
