Our Harlequin class safety razor is manufactured with a standard size razor head. It will accommodate all of the major razor brands that you can source from a standard sampler pack or what you will find on Amazon. When loading, please be sure to use double edge razor blades only and install in one piece (do not crack in half like for single edge razors). When you unscrew the razor head be sure to first place the razor blade on the pins of the cap. Then place the safety bar portion of the head over the pins and lastly, screw the handle into the razor head. When screwing down finger-tight, the blade will "curve" until a shaving angle is formed. There should be a slight razor cutting edge protruding from the cap, but not over the safety bar. This blade placement is standard in all commercially produced three-pieced and butterfly style safety razors. When shaving, be sure to use a 30 degree angle on the skin (just so the cap of the razor touches the skin) and change angle toward the safety bar when cutting from conservatively to aggressively (this comes with experience and you should always begin with a slow, conservative cutting stroke on a properly prepared shaving surface). Use light pressure and let the tool do the work. If after loading your razor you feel that it is not working for you, please contact us for more information or return for a full refund. | Answer: | Hello to you and thank you for your question. Quick answer: We recommend you start with a sampler pack because there is no 'right' razor, just what is right to you. Follow our recommendation and you will see why. Now the long answer: It is generally considered by most DE (double edge) razor experts that there is no 'best blade' for any type of use. The reason for this is because of a few things you can consider with any DE set up. The razor head, razor weight and user experience. Our razor has a 'closed comb' head which is a better design for a beginner. It would be considered a less aggressive razor head due to the angle of the blade when installed. This is good for manoeuvring around various surfaces. The weight of our razor is medium (29 gram head weight) compared to others and will require a slight to fair amount of pressure to get a good cut. This is also good for beginners who come from modern razors and are used to pushing down a bit more. We feel our combined angle and weight is good for shaving uneven areas and with the bulb handle considered women in our design. A heavier weight razor requires little to no pressure and can accommodate a sharper, more aggressive blade but is best when paired with an experienced user. The experience of the user must also be considered when selecting a blade. In the industry, Feather blades are considered to be the sharpest blades and are recommended for users that have some experience. Wilkinson, Astra and Merkur are more of a 'middle of the road' blade and are a little less aggressive (industry speak for sharp). Others like Lord and Shark are priced a bit lower and are good beginner blades that require more frequent changing. In finishing, you can see there are many things to consider when choosing a blade. We advocate that a beginner legacy shaver take the time to try different blades to see what works for their needs. We also promote proper skin set up before beginning any shave as it is equally important as the blade in a close shave. DE shaving is an exciting way to shave because it is easiest to personalize the experience. Finding what works best for you is really -to us, all of the fun.
