No clue why someone would say it's noisy unless they're not paying attention to upkeep. The pump can be easily disassembled and cleaned - hair can be picked up in the water and caught in the little impeller. The end of the pump can be popped off with a little screwdriver, and the magnetic impeller can be pulled out with tweezers if hair gets sucked into it. The tweezers also can be used to pull the hair off the impeller - do more often during shedding periods. Pump snaps back together no problem. Takes about 3 to 5 minutes more when rinsing & cleaning whole unit. You need to do this at least once a week if you want the water to be clean and prevent kidney problems with your cat - in any watering system you use.

Answer:	I'm not familiar with "cat mate", but I can describe these filters for you so you can compare them. These are about 4" long, 2.25" wide and about .25" at the thickest point. They are soft filters, kind of like little pillows, with stitched edges that slide into grooves in the pet flow fountain. They are not enclosed in any kind of plastic or metal. Hope that helps.

Answer:	I threw this fountain in the trash after a month of "dealing with it" - after about a week (keeping it full all the time) it started making noise, all the time and one time waking me up in the middle of the night and my cats were already up and frightened! As well, the little filter inside the bowl didn't catch hardly any hair and there was hair (fur) floating around the bowl. The only reason I bought this one was because I moved into a studio from a large 2 bedroom. After shoving this useless thing into the trash, I went and bought another Drinkwell Platinum which had lasted me years, never makes a noise unless empty (which it's bigger, easier to fill and lasts longer) and comes out as literally a fountain, so the cat/dog doesn't ever touch the plastic (which can cause feline acne) like this one does (treating one of my cats now for it). Anyways, the bigger, noiseless Drinkwell Platinum is actually half price now at Chewy . com - I got it for $31.00 just two days ago (11-23-15) and it's already been shipped! I can't wait to go back to the drinkwell my cats really loved! They hardly drank out of this one. I always have an extra ceramic dog-sized bowl of water for them as well, and with this fountain, they were always drinking out of the bowl, but they sure do LOVE the Drinkwell Platinum which usually costs about $60-something dollars, but at Chewy . com which I came across while cost-comparing, right now it's only $31.00, I couldn't believe it! If you go there, I recommend getting the cheap cleaning brushes all in one pack and a few extra packages of charcoal filters (3 to a pack). But yes, this one here definitely makes noise! The one I bought earlier this month I wouldn't even give away, I stuffed it in the trash I was so disappointed!

Answer:	I bought one of these 3 years ago (2015) and that one worked great! You could not hear a thing when the water was full. I have it in my office and I never heard a single noise from it. The motor recently died on me so I decided to buy a new one since I loved this one so much. The new one is MUCH nosier than the old one. I am not sure why because they look identical, but there must be something different about the pump because it makes a constant, vibrating noise that is very distracting. I am going to take Sage_Eagle's advice and see if I can reposition it to make it less noisy, but I am very disappointed in the new one i just bought. If I cannot find a way to reduce the noise I will return it.

Answer:	It plugs into an outlet. It uses a small fountain pump and charcoal filters which need to be replaced periodically. The fountain is pretty quiet. It is the only one my cats will use. Needs to be disassembled and cleaned every 2 weeks as a film will develop that the cats don't like. Water reservoir lasts about 3-4 days for 2 indoor cats. Hope this helps. I am on my second one. The first pump lasted about 6 years of 24/7 usage.
